Part two on your Understanding Chinese Characters series is photosemantic characters. These types of characters contain both the general meaning and the vague sound in one character. Usually, the radical located on the left will tell you the what this character relates to, such as water, fire, or illnesses. The character on the right usually rhymes with the character, and so will give you the vowel sound of that character.

In written chinese, the character 魔 (mó) can mean : Demon, Devil, Fiend, wicked force, magic.
It is made of two components : - 麻 Hemp, Cannabis and - 鬼 Evil spirit So, a Demon is literally an « Evil spirit of the cannabis ».
The character 魔 was originally used to translate the sanskrit word मार (Māra) when the first buddhist missionaries came to China from India. In buddhism, Māra is the malignant Demon King who tries to stop Siddartha Gautama from achieving enlightenment by tempting him with visions and illusions. Māra is the dreaded Lord of Illusions. The reason for this translation is that the ancient chinese medicine was well aware of the psychoactives effects of the cannabis and its entheogenic properties, and therefore the link with the illusions of Māra is then simple and easy to understand.

Simple ideograms are characters that act as icons to represent abstract ideas. Actually, they operate on the same concept as, say, the heart emoji (❤️), which is an icon for love, an abstract concept.

酉 is the chinese character utilized for the tenth Earthly Branch of Bazi: Yǒu - The Rooster. It represents a wine vessel or a vase used in making and storing fermented millet alcoholic drink. The reason is that the Yǒu month is the month of harvest, and the Yǒu hours are those of aperitif time and afterwork parties. Yǒu/Rooster individuals adore to be acclaimed for their accomplishments as well as bragging about all the things and work they have done. But that's because they are perfectionists, meticulous and hardworking intelligent people who like flawless results. Roosters have high standards for themselves, and the fact is, even higher standards for the people around them. To say they are a bit judgemental is an understatement. Roosters do tend to crave the spotligth, and really thrive on attention. They are very careful about appearances, and so they are always well groomed in styles that flatter their body types. Roosters make sure you always notice them. The element associated with Yǒu/Rooster is Xin, that is Yin (female) Metal. It’s an extremely feminine element, a precious metal, elegant, finely worked and highly polished. But beware, beneath the brilliance of jewelry and the glamour, a razor-sharp blade - without mentioning a sharp tongue - may be hidden...
