hc of there being a thunderstorm at night w the kids
Tumblr media
Amy hears the low rumble through their bedroom window, barely an hour after everyone has gotten into bed.
"Get ready for the invasion." she whispers, waiting to see if Jake is even still awake, but he turns around straight away to face her.
"Mmh, I dunno." he mumbles, clearly sleepy. "Mac's a big boy now, almost in school." and god, if that isn't a strange thought.
"Yeah, but Maya's gonna rile him up."
The first pang of thunder hits the next moment, and their bedroom is set alight from lightning for a second before they can already hear the telltale pitterpatter of naked feet. Amy smiles as the door opens every so carefully.
"Mama? Daddeh?" Maya's voice cuts through the rumble of more thunder coming.
"We're scared." Mac explains by her side, holding her hand right as lighting strikes and she squeals.
"Come here." Jake sits up and lifts the duvet between them, and that's all they need to storm into the room and up to the bed. Mac lifts Maya onto the mattress first so she can crawl under the covers and he quickly follows her, their two sets of curls popping up from the other end soon enough. Amy brushes through Maya's hair, all tangled up and messy from only an hour of sleep, and pulls her closer to her while Mac shifts against Jake's front, who's long accepted his role of Big Spoon with his two little buds.
“You don’t need to be scared of a storm. Nothing bad is going to happen.” Amy explains as she peppers kisses down Maya’s cheeks to make her squeal with joy instead of fear. Secretly, she’s glad they always come running to their room when it rains - not just for the quality cuddles they all get, but also for the knowledge that they’re not worried about bothering their parents, that they’ll gladly come to them for help with any little problem.
“It’s loud.” Maya whispers, followed by Mac nodding.
“And bright.”
“And cold.”
Of course little Maya is cold, even with all the windows closed and her big fluffy duvet in her bed. She’s Amy’s daughter, after all. Amy pulls the blanket around them up and wraps her in it, but she’s going to scuttle over to Jake’s body heat soon enough anyway, and Mac’s little radiator-body is going to end up in her arms instead. It’s always a perfect balance in their little family.
But right now Jake is still tickling Mac’s sides, making him kick and squirm with laughter, and Maya is twisting in her arms to grab some of her hair and wrap it around her fingers to play, like she watches her dad do almost daily. Considering how sleepy they all were an our ago, the energy certainly seems back now. She tries to get Jake’s attention, to signal to him in their silent ways that maybe they should settle the kids down instead of riling them up more, but he’s far too busy trying not to get kicked in the face.
She’s so caught up in all of this she doesn’t expect the loud rumble and crash of lightning that hits the next moment, and jumps just a little, but Maya still notices.
“Mama is scared too!” The little tattler squeaks, and Jake’s grin widens enough to be seen in the dark.
“Is she now?” He teases immediately, and no silent communication with her eyes is going to stop him. “Of the loud and the bright and the cold?”
“Maybe the cold.” She admits as a cool breeze from somewhere - maybe the bathroom window is still tilted - hits her bare shoulders and she shuffles herself and Maya in her arms closer to the heatpool that is her two boys.
“Well there’s really only one solution to that, then.” Jake grins down at Mac and Maya, who grin back in exactly the same way, and Amy slightly curses the Peralta-genes in their wide mouths and mischievous ways. But before she can say anything else, Jake already yells “HUG PILE!” and she can feel little hands and feet stomp into the mattress to her side to slam their equally little, but surprisingly heavy bodies on top of her.
It’s all followed by a collective OOMPFH! as Jake tops off the hug pile himself, making sure not to squish either of the kids too much and landing his whole weight on Amy instead.
“Okay, I’m warm now!” She yells from underneath all the bodies, but is barely heard over the giggles. “Very warm, so we can all go back into our own beds!
“Nooo!” Is the reply from all three over her, including Jake, who knows well enough she’s only joking. He quickly clambers off of the hug pile while Amy holds onto Mac and Maya, feeling his arms wrap around them and her waist from the side instead.
“Storm nights means family cuddles.” He insists, and Mac nods in his arms, against her chest.
“Alright, I’m convinced.” Amy laughs while turning, sliding Mac and Maya between her and Jake in a tight hug. “But we need to sleep.”
“Yeah, okay.” Jake acquiesces while sorting through Mac’s hair and kissing the top of his head before reaching over to muss Maya’s curls as well. “Mama’s right. Eyes closed, guys.”
Mac and Maya squeeze their eyes shut as much as possible, and get another little tickle from their dad before it all settles down a little and quiet finds its place in their little bedroom bubble again. But only for a short while.
“Daddy?” Mac whispers into the dark, and Jake replies with a hum.
“If it’s still raining tomorrow, can we have hot chocolate?”
“Ames?” He sends the question over, as expected.
“We can have one each.” Amy relents. “If-!” She continues over the collected celebrations “-we all go to sleep right now!”
The giggles die down quicker than before, and it’s not too long before she can hear the calm breathing of both her children deep asleep, while Jake is still smiling at her through the darkness.
“You need to sleep too.” She scolds.
“Not scared of the storm anymore, then?” He whispers, and she rolls her eyes before closing them, feeling his hand above them all glide into her hair and wrap a strand around his finger before whispering Good night, Ames.
