What To Wear On Your First Mountain Bike Ride
What To Wear For Mountain Biking
(Disclaimer: there’s a good chance this article contains affiliate links if you click on one of them I may receive a small commission at no extra charge to you.)
When I first started mountain biking, I did not look like a mountain biker. I wore soccer shorts, ankle socks, and tennis shoes.
But did that stop me from having fun? Absolutely not.
If you’re just getting into mountain biking, wear whatever you have. Athletic shorts, running shirts, ankle socks, and a road bike helmet.
Guaranteed you’ll still have fun.
But if you’re looking to invest in mountain bike-specific apparel, this post is for you.
Mountain biking is a huge industry and there are thousands of clothes and gear styles and accessories to choose from.
So how do you know what to wear? This guide will walk you through it.
Let’s start from the top down.
1. A Helmet
A helmet is the most vital piece of mountain bike equipment you can invest in. Promise me that you will never ride without a helmet, mkay?
You may already own a helmet, but if it’s over ten years old it’s definitely time for a new one. The material can break down over time and helmet technology has advanced significantly over the past decade.
The current MIPS technology (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) is designed as a slip-panel system that reduces rotational forces during impact.
If you’re buying a new helmet, make sure it has a little MIPS sticker on it.
There are two types of helmets worth looking into. The first is a half-lid, which is basically your normal helmet. For mountain biking, make sure it has a visor to help keep sun out of the eyes. Visors also give you a little more protection if you find yourself going over the handlebars.
The other option is a breakaway helmet. These are my personal favorites because they transition quickly and easily from a half-lid to a full-face. The chin guard is removable. Keep it off if you’re headed out on a cross-country ride or strap it on if you’re headed to the bike park.
I recommend the Bell Breakaway.
2. Sunglasses
Sunglasses are a pretty important piece of mountain biking gear. Not only do they shade your eyes from the sun, but they also keep dirt and dust from flying into your eyeballs which could send you tumbling off the trail.
Many riders ride with their normal everyday sunglasses, which work just fine.
You can also invest in bike-specific glasses with interchangeable lenses for every type of riding including dark forested trails or high UV terrain.
The ‘best’ mountain bike glasses, though, are transition lenses, or photochromic lenses. These lenses darken in high-light terrain and lighten up during low-light situations.
They’re great for multiple riding conditions and avoid the need to change lenses for various ride conditions.
These are great affordable glasses or if you want to go highend I recommend the Smith Attack MTB Clear to Gray.
3. A Jersey
Athletic shirts will work just fine if you don’t want to invest in a full mountain bike ‘kit’ yet, but if you’re ready to deck yourself out in full mtb gear you can find plenty of mountain bike-specific jerseys.
What makes them mountain biking specific? Nothing really except the brand and style.
Most mtb jerseys are made to be loose-fitting (as opposed to skin-tight roadie jerseys) and… that’s about it.
Many will have brand names or logos scrawled across the sleeves or chest (like Troy Lee Designs or the Fox logo), so mountain bike jersey’s definitely have ‘look’. But they’re not essential for riding.
You can choose from 3/4 sleeves, full sleeves, short sleeves, button down, flannel, crazy patterns, or simple monotone.
My favorite mountain bike jersey brands include Dakine, ZOIC, Fox, and Yeti.
4. A Hydration pack
Not exactly apparel, hydration packs are nonetheless important pieces of gear for mountain biking.
You have a few options:
Option 1 is a backpack-style hydration pack like a CamelBak or Osprey pack. This is my personal favorite because I can store lots of snacks. More snacks = better.
Option 2 is a lumbar pack. I’ve honestly tried these and don’t love them because the strap digs into my stomach (probably because I’m carrying too many snacks). But other people - like my brother and boyfriend - swear by them.
Option 3 is to just carry a water bottle in a frame cage. This is fine if you’re just going out for a quick ride close to home, but if you’re doing any longer or are heading in the backcountry you’ll definitely need to carry more water and other essentials.
5. Gloves
Gloves help keep you hands tight on the grips by preventing slip from sweat or dirt. They’re not mandatory (some riders actually prefer to ride without them), but I personally always wear gloves.
Some mountain bike-specific gloves have a bit of padded protection just incase you become friendly with a tree and others are simple liners for the hands.
If you’re just starting out, a simple glove will do. I really love HandUp gloves because they’re made in the USA and they make you look really cool. #partytime.
6. Shorts
You can wear any old athletic short when you’re just starting out in the saddle, but eventually you’ll probably want to upgrade to some mountain bike specific shorts.
Mountain bike shorts tend to be longer in length than regular athletic shorts (think more like board shorts) and they have strategic pockets and are made from breathable and stretchy fabric. Some even have airflow vents and built-in protection.
You can stay simple with mountain bike shorts or you can go flashy. I LOVE Shredly’s patterns and styles. Sorry dudes, these are just for the ladies.
FYI: a big mountain biking faux pax is to have a gap between your shorts and your knee pads 😉
7. Liners
If you buy one piece of mountain bike apparel (aside from a helmet) it should be liners - aka chamois. Liners keep your nether regions happy during longer rides and they help prevent chaffing which, as you can imagine, is really not a fun experience.
There’s no ‘best’ mountain bike shorts liner on the market, but a few of many favorite brands are Louis Garneau, Yeti, and Pearl Izumi.
8. Socks
Socks are the most important piece of mountain biking apparel. They make or break your mountain bike outfit.
Just kidding 😂
Wear whatever socks you want. But if you want to ‘look’ like a mountain biker, get some that pull up to at least half calf length.
This will help protect your shins somewhat from branch scratches and keep dirt, dust, and sweat from sliding down into your shoes.
9. Shoes
If you’re just starting out, you can really wear any sneaker or athletic shoe that you already have.
But once you decide to get more serious about mountain biking (which I guarantee that you will because it’s the best sport in the world) then you’ll want to invest in some mountain biking-specific shoes.
You have a lot of options. First you need to decide if you are going to ride flat pedals or clipless pedals. Personally I ride on flats, but my boyfriend rides clipless so it really comes down to personal preference and what you’re comfortable with.
There is no right or wrong answer despite the heavy debate among the mountain bike community that one is better than the other.
You can also ride both depending on the terrain. I’d actually like to get a clipless pedal/shoe set up for when I’m riding more cross-country terrain.
Once you decide with pedal to go with (flats or clipless) then you need to decide which shoe to get.
Flat mountain bike shoes have a grippy rubber sole and semi-stiff shell to keep your feet glued to the pedals. Clipless compatible shoes are similar, but have a platform to attach cleats to so that you can clip into your pedals.
For someone just starting out, I recommend getting the Five Ten Freerider’s. They’re a great entry-level shoe that are relatively affordable.
