So, are a few, we have the 'original' name ie the non-catholic version. From the Roman general Hannibal, which mean grace of Baal, a Canaanite-Phoenician god of rainstorms and fertility. But, also Baal in later Mesopotamian mythologies was also a god of war. Along with being a war god he was also linked with the god of Justice. Now, I have no idea what the author was cooking when he thought of the name. But, if we take this idea of Justice and Rainstorms. Rain, and water by extension is the 'creator' of life and what allows us to exist. And by naming him, favored of the 'water/war god' power/influence over life and death. heres the funky lil guy

Anyways, now for the Catholic/Christian ver, Ba'al is Beelzebub, the Lord of the Flies. Now, associated with Gluttony and Cannibalism. And the 'fallen angel' archetype could also be associated with his 'fall' from his Count status into the swamp and poverty.
