That same month, the band released their second album Oriental Beat. In January 1982, Hanoi Rocks recorded their first music videos at the Lepakko, a concert venue and centre of independent youth culture, for the songs "Tragedy", "Oriental Beat", and "Motorvatin'". Another single, " Dead By X-Mas / Nothing New", was released in December. In late November they returned to Finland and released the single " Desperados / Devil Woman". On 19 September 1981, the band made their debut at the Marquee Club in London. In September 1981, after extensive tours in Sweden and Finland, the band moved to London, where they recorded their second album. That same month, the band released its debut album, Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks, produced by Michael Monroe and Andy McCoy, calling themselves "The Muddy Twins." The album was well-received, reaching number five on the Finnish album charts. The second single " Tragedy / Café Avenue", written by McCoy when he was fifteen or sixteen years old, was released in February 1981. The tour developed the band's energetic and wild playing style, which audiences were slow to find pleasing but later praised the band for. The band launched a 102-day tour in January 1981, which is believed to be the longest rock tour in Finnish history. Gyp Casino was the band's drummer but did not play on the single as he was recording with another band in Stockholm. "Kill City Kills" was one of McCoy's oldest songs, which he had written when he was hanging around at a Finnish apartment block called Kill City. McCoy had translated the song, whose title means "I Want You" in Swedish, into English and claimed it as his own. "I Want You" was a new version of the Swedish song "Vill ha dej" by Heartbreak. In November 1980, the band struck a deal with Johanna Kustannus and released its debut single, " I Want You / Kill City Kills". When they moved to Stockholm, the bandmembers lived mostly on the street, begging for money, except Andy McCoy, who lived with his wealthy girlfriend. Stockholm, early recordings and London (1980–1981) By then Peki had left the band, and when they relocated to Stockholm, they hired an old friend of Monroe and McCoy's, drummer Gyp Casino. McCoy replaced Stefan Piesnack, who had been arrested for drug possession, and Yaffa replaced Nedo. In late 1980 Andy McCoy left Pelle Miljoona Oy to join Hanoi Rocks, and was later joined by another former Pelle Miljoona Oy member, bassist Sami Yaffa. Vesterinen soon became the band's manager after speaking with McCoy and Monroe. At one of the band's first shows was Seppo Vesterinen, who had brought big-name artists like Iggy Pop and Frank Zappa to Finland. The band toured Finnish clubs, playing McCoy and Monroe's own songs and covers like Cheap Trick's "He's a Whore", The Police's "Born in the 50s" and MC5's "Looking at You". The original line-up of Hanoi Rocks was Michael Monroe on vocals, former Pelle Miljoona Oy guitarist Stefan Piesnack, Monroe's guitarist Nasty Suicide, bassist Nedo Soininen, and drummer Peki Sirola. McCoy allowed Monroe to form the band with an agreement that McCoy would join later. McCoy did not join the band immediately, because he was the guitarist for the Finnish punk band Pelle Miljoona Oy. Original vocalist Michael Monroe and guitarist Andy McCoy reunited in 2001 with a new lineup that lasted until 2009. guys is it stupid to be crying at a bassline? only I'm listening to the newly-remixed version of Hanoi Rocks' Oriental Beat album from 1982 (apparently the original was really poorly mixed and they think it had an adverse effect on their career, which I never knew - the original tapes turned up in 2020 and they've had the whole thing remixed), and all right, most of these songs have been engraved on my soul for 30 years, and it always does me good to hear Sami Yaffa playing the utterly awesome bassline intro for Motorvatin' live, but since I saw the original lineup last September (when I thought for 30 years I'd never get to see them), it turns out that the old songs, which are absolutely not the sort of songs that would ordinarily invite an emotional reaction, make me cry like a child these days.
(I had a CD player for my 18th birthday and immediately bought their Best Of CD from our local second-hand record shop because a lot of the bands I liked were citing them as an influence, and the shop had an awesome poster of them behind the till - all of which was 30 years ago this month. They've been an integral part of my life ever since, and given how obscure they wound up being over here, discovering a fellow fan is always like discovering a new best friend.)
Anyway, the new mix is amazing - I usually can't really tell with these things, but I know these songs inside out, and they sound so different and so much better. <3333333
brb, off to continue being overwrought by a bunch of lightweight glam-punk songs with slightly wobbly English lyrics...

The album features backing vocals by Katrina Leskanich, the lead singer of Katrina and the Waves. Many of the lyrics deal with typical rock n' roll topics like breaking the law ("No Law or Order) and teenage rebellion ("Teenangels Outsiders"). This album also marked the first time McCoy was not the sole songwriter, with Monroe being the second songwriter on the songs "Motorvatin'" and "Teenangels Outsiders". The album was produced, recorded and mixed by Peter Wooliscroft who had worked with Frank Zappa for example.

But Monroe and McCoy announced what would appear to be the final breakup of Hanoi Rocks in 2008, and the group subsequently played a series of farewell shows at Helsinki's Tavastia Club.nn In 2017, Finnish label Ainoa Productions released Rebels on the Run, a compilation of rare B-sides and EP-only tracks from the early '80s, remastered by Mika Jussila (Nightwish, Reckless Love).Recordings for Oriental Beat (then with the working-title, Second Attempt for Suicide) started in late 1981, at the Advision-studio in London. That year and the next, Hanoi Rocks toured Europe and Asia, and in 2007 the group released a new full-length, Street Poetry, on Demolition Records. The new lineup of the band issued Another Hostile Takeover, also on Major Leiden, in 2005. Monroe, Suicide, and Yaffa reunited in 1994 as Demolition 23.nn However, Monroe and McCoy re-formed Hanoi Rocks in 2002, releasing Twelve Shots on the Rocks on the Major Leiden label, and started touring once again. Chimes, McCoy, and Suicide formed the short-lived Cherry Bombz, Yaffa joined Jetboy, and Monroe recorded a solo album, Not Fakin' It, that briefly made the U.S. He gave the band notice early in 1985, and the group broke up in May after a farewell concert. (Neil was convicted of vehicular manslaughter.) Razzle was replaced by ex-Clash drummer Terry Chimes, but things were not quite the same for Monroe. The band ended the year with a tour of the U.S., but Razzle was killed in a tragic automobile accident while a passenger in Mötley Crüe lead singer Vince Neil's car. chart single the next year, from the album Two Steps from the Move. After it was completed, Casino was fired and replaced by ex-Demon Preacher and Dark drummer Nicholas "Razzle" Dingley.nn Hanoi Rocks signed to CBS in 1983 and began to spread their name in Britain their remake of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Up Around the Bend" became their only U.K. Their Scandinavian-only (at first) debut album, Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks, was released in 1981, and the bandmembers soon went to London to promote themselves and record Oriental Beat. All members except Monroe had previously played with one or both of the Finnish punk bands Briard and Pelle Miljoona Oy. Hanoi Rocks were founded in 1980 by singer Michael Monroe (born Matti Fagerholm) and guitarist Andy McCoy (born Antti Hulkko) after some lineup changes, the rest of the group consisted of guitarist Nasty Suicide (born Jan Stenfors), bassist Sam Yaffa (born Saki Takamäki), and drummer Gyp Casino (born Jesper Sporre). Finland's major export to the world of heavy metal, Hanoi Rocks, drew much of their sound and inspiration from '70s glam rock and were thought by some to have fused the two styles more successfully than similar acts such as Mötley Crüe.

Led by Monroe, the band rose to great cult fame, although they only released one album (“Demolition 23.”) in 1994 and broke up shortly afterwards. Unfortunately, this led to the band’s untimely demise in early 1985.Īnother big surprise for the unique 60th anniversary concert is that the “support band” for the show will be the legendary Demolition 23 reunited. Razzle died in a tragic accident in 1984. Gyp Casino was replaced in 1982 by Nicholas “Razzle” Dingley who became an integral member of Hanoi Rocks. Hanoi Rocks, the first Finnish rock band to make an international breakthrough, recorded their first three albums with the original line-up: Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks (1981), Oriental Beat (1982) and Self Destruction Blues (1982). Michael Monroe and Andy McCoy founded Hanoi Rocks in the late 1970’s and the band’s original line-up was established in 1980. At first I planned to keep it a surprise but after giving it some more thought, I realised that it wouldn’t be fair, especially to the fans, not to make this public in advance and that everybody should have the chance to be there.” This is not a Hanoi Rocks re-union, but a unique part of the anniversary concert. “This is the only appropriate time and place for all five original members of Hanoi Rocks to get on stage to play together after a break of over forty years. An idea that has previously seemed impossible, is now becoming a reality at Monroe’s 60th anniversary concert. For decades there’s been an endless amount of requests to reform the original line-up of the legendary band to perform live. Several international bands, such as Foo Fighters, Guns N’ Roses and Skid Row, acknowledge the influence of Hanoi Rocks and hold the band in very high regard. Internationally acclaimed, as they were throughout their career, Hanoi Rocks has had a great impact on the entire history of rock. The quintet, who started a historic chapter in the world’s music scene, was seen on stage for the last time at Helsinki’s Tavastia on July 27th, 1982. Now Monroe reveals the big news: as the Grand Finale of the concert, the original line-up of Hanoi Rocks, one of Finland’s most significant rock bands of all time, will take the stage: Michael Monroe, Andy McCoy, Sami Yaffa, Nasty Suicide and Gyp Casino. Michael Monroe, who turned 60 in June, will celebrate the milestone with a bang at the Helsinki Ice Hall on September 23rd. Michael Monroe’s big surprise – the final climax of the 60th anniversary concert at the Helsinki Ice Hall on September 23rd is the reformation of the original Hanoi Rocks line-up.

Nobody else who attempted to do this was as successful as Hanoi Rocks (others stank phoney phuckers) this, plus their decadent Scandinavian mystique, is the reason for their much-heralded influence on some of the more unfortunate developments of the big haired 1980s (Poison, Faster Pussycat, everything else like this). Hanoi fused (Stooges) punk with (Alice Cooper) glam the results were convincing because they were somehow righteous about it. If you like the name of this record, you will like the music inside. This LP gets half its points for the title alone. It has that "we are producing this, our first album, ourselves!" cheap tin-can reverb, which dates it a little. They produced the first album themselves. In England, that is.īangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks - Lick 1981 Reader shit! Seb Hunter? If you like his writing style, definitely pick up the book from Fourth Estate publications. Throw in a cover of a Hoyt Axton country blues and you have another striking collection of songs from Hanoi Rocks, a true lost gem in any survey of 80's bands.

Oriental Beat also opened markets in the UK and Japan, where Hanoi eventually became very popular. (1982) Oriental Beat is the second studio album by the Finnish glam punk band Hanoi Rocks, recorded in London and released in 1982. In interviews the band have said that they were not crazy about the production on `Oriental Beat' but I don't really see much of a difference from "Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes" in terms of overall sound quality although the former has more of Michael Monroe's sax playing but that might be a sign of the growing confidence in the young front man's abilities. Although musically closer to traditional rock n' roll and punk, the band have been cited as a major influence in the glam metal genre for bands such as Guns N' Roses, Skid Row and Poison. Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks. The title track sort of spells out the band's philosophy and it perfectly sums up the exotic qualities that the name Hanoi Rocks conjures up. "Motorvatin'" gets the LP going in fine fashion and "Don't Follow Me", which follows it, are two of the finest songs in this or any Hanoi Rocks collection. The band shows its punk and glam influences not only with its look on the cover of the album but also with the music performed on the album as well. New York Dolls and Clash references are littered throughout this record but nothing sounds too derivative as to lack authenticity these boys did know the rough side of life as did their antecedents. Hanoi Rocks pressed into early 1982 with their sophomore release `Oriental Beat' which, just as their debut did, gave the Finnish rockers a distinction that set them apart from many of their glam ilk.

“Whoo! Time for more Guns N’ Roses propaganda (and by that I mean an excuse to gush about Steven Adler, one of my favorite drummers/people ever)
First off, look at him. This is, and so cannot stress this enough, one of the cutest people I’ve ever seen. Ever. Look at him! (And also, he’s a drummer so he’s fun-size - he is 5’7 at most and at least some of you reading could pick him up)
And he’s one of the greatest and most fun drummers to ever live. I’ve heard maybe 3 other drummers who are as fun to listen to and who have as good of a feel for matching the actual emotion of a song (harder to explain with drumming, but even though they’re both love songs, wouldn’t do the same solos for Patience and Sweet Child o Mine - it’s the same deal here). The demo for Back Off Bitch runs laps around the full version and half of that is because of him.
Izzy Stradlin himself has said that he gave early Guns N’ Roses their feel and that things got weird and “nothing worked” without him (I swear to god that’s a direct quote). You know how hard it is to get a guitarist or singer to recognize and actually admit that? And he’s never made a bad song or sounded boring, and that’s really rare for 80s-era hard rock drummers. Even Tommy Lee’s had his weird songs and I can’t say the same here.
And some bonus propaganda before I write another five paragraphs”

On this day in Rock music history (Jan. 31st 1982)......Hanoi Rocks released their 2nd studio album titled 'Oriental Beat'. Oriental Beat also opened markets in the UK and Japan, where Hanoi eventually became very popular. Even though Oriental Beat is considered a Hanoi-classic, many of the band members have called the album a failure. Michael Monroe has called the album great, but blamed the producer, Pete Wooliscroft, of ruining the album's sound by all-around bad producing and mixing. Wooliscroft had mixed the album while Hanoi Rocks was on tour, and didn't know what Hanoi Rocks was about, so he went with a completely different style on the mixing. Sami Yaffa had called the album "a piece of shit" in a 1985 interview. Even with these comments, the album was voted the 91st best rock album, in the "100 Greatest Rock Albums" poll by the Finnish radio station Radio Rock. Oriental Beat beat-out such albums like Kiss' Lick It Up and The Doors' Morrison Hotel.
