EL CINE NAZI (V): EL TRISTE CASO DE JOACHIM GOTTSCHALK

A lo largo de más de 100 años el mundo del cine nos ha dado numerosas estrellas, pero al mismo tiempo hemos visto casos muy desgraciados por diferentes causas, que han cortado de raíz la trayectoria de directores o actores: bien por accidente (James Dean, William Holden, Carole Lombard, Bruce Lee, Natalie Wood, en nuestro país Claudio Guerin Hill); bien como el final de la deriva de una vida sin límites que los llevó a la más absoluta ruina o al suicidio (James Whale, Jean Seberg, Robin Williams, Marilyn Monroe); bien por perecer asesinada como el triste caso de Sharon Tate o incluso el turbio caso en el que se vio involucrado Fatty Arbuckle. La represión política ha sido fuente de cárcel y exilio en muchos casos (más de 100 cineastas españoles se exiliaron en Méjico tras la guerra del 36 y más de 2000 alemanes marcharon a Norteamérica durante la etapa nazi). La Caza de Brujas en Estados Unidos significó también el fin de muchas carreras, cuando no la cárcel, de algunos directores y guionistas de Hollywood.  Pero el caso que hoy nos ocupa es extremo por las circunstancias y el trágico final que tuvo.

Al menos muchas de estas estrellas siguen disfrutando de la fama internacional y su nombre permanece en lo más alto del firmamento cinematográfico. Otros, sin embargo, que gozaron de gran fama durante unos años han perdido su estela y su nombre con el paso del tiempo. Este es el caso del actor a quien hoy dedicamos este capítulo y que tiene en su haber uno de los más tristes episodios de la historia del cine. Vamos a hablar de JOACHIM GOTTSCHALK.

Seguramente este nombre no le diga absolutamente nada a nadie hoy día; sin embargo, su fama fue enorme dentro del cine europeo de los años 30 y especialmente en el teatro y el cine alemán. Joachim Gottschalk nació en Berlín en 1904. Pronto se inició y adquirió gran fama en el teatro y en la década de los a��os 30 participó en numerosas películas alemanas de gran éxito (le llamaban el Leslie Howard alemán). Formó pareja cinematográfica con la también famosa actriz Brigitte Horney en películas como Tú y yo, Alboroto en Damasco, La chica de fano o la dirigida por Arthur María Rabenalt en 1939, Escape en the Dark que fue prohibida tras la II Guerra Mundial. Su última película fue El ruiseñor sueco, de 1941.

Gottschalk era una estrella del cine nazi y recibía atenciones constantes por parte de la cúpula del poder. Lo que no podía prever era que una decisión suya de 1930 iba a convertirse en una gran tragedia. En 1930 Gottschalk se casó con la actriz judía Meta Wolff con la que tuvo un hijo en 1933. Con la llegada de los nazis al poder los actores tenían que entregar un certificado de raza aria lo que significaba la prohibición para la actividad profesional de su esposa. No obstante, los nazis mantuvieron una cierta relajación durante los primeros años con aquellos actores de fama que eran judíos o tenían familiares de esa raza (los nombraban “arios de honor”) y de esa forma el matrimonio pudo esquivar las leyes antisemitas. Gottschalk pasó del éxito en el teatro al cine en 1938 y no dejó de hacer películas hasta su muerte. Gottschalk y Horney eran la pareja de éxito en el cine durante aquellos años.

Pero en 1941 creyéndose amparado por su fama ante las autoridades nazis, Gottschalk se hizo acompañar por su mujer a una recepción cuando ya estaba en marcha la II Guerra Mundial. A la fiesta asistían numerosos jerarcas nazis que le fueron presentados a la actriz y cuando Goebbels se enteró que una judía había participado en esa reunión exclusiva de los nazis decretó que el actor debía divorciarse de su mujer; Gottschalk se negó y el ministro de Propaganda decidió que la actriz y su hijo de 8 años fuesen internados en un campo de concentración. Se presionó de nuevo al actor para que se separase de la actriz judía con la amenaza de en caso contrario no volvería a actuar, pero Gottschalk volvió a oponerse y se decantó por acompañar a su mujer y a su hijo al campo de concentración. La ira de Goebbels fue tal que decidió la movilización y militarización inmediata del actor en la Wehrmacht y el traslado inmediato de su mujer y su hijo al campo de Theresienstadt (sobre este campo existe un conocido corto documental con ese mismo nombre dirigido por Kurt Gerron en 1944 con el que los nazis pretendían dar una visión positiva ante el mundo de estos centros del horror).

El 6 de Noviembre de 1941 cuando estaban en su casa esperando la llegada de la Gestapo y tras sedar a su hijo, Joachim y Meta abrieron la espita del gas de su cocina falleciendo los tres. El régimen trató de silenciar la muerte y las circunstancias de la misma y de hecho solo después del final de la guerra millones de alemanes se enteraron de la tragedia de su admirado actor y su familia. Lo que no pudo evitar el régimen, a pesar de sus amenazas es que al entierro de los tres acudiesen varios famosos profesionales del cine con Brigitte Horney, su pareja de varias películas, a la cabeza.

Dos años después de finalizar la guerra, Kurt Maetzig dirigió Marriage the shadows, un melodrama en el que se narra esta triste historia. Hoy, el nombre de Joachim Gottschalk no figurará en el olimpo de las estrellas del cine, pero por encima de su tragedia quedará para siempre la dignidad de esta pareja que pagó con su vida su oposición al fascismo.

   Hasta aquí este somero repaso al cine del régimen nazi. Del III Reich hemos conocido una gran cantidad de historias tanto en ensayos, novelas de ficción y sobre todo en películas de muy variable calidad; hemos conocido el ascenso de Hitler al poder, su política de expansión, el desarrollo de la II Guerra Mundial y especialmente la Shoah. Pero es muy poco lo que hemos visto, por razones ética, del cine que se hizo en aquellos 12 nefastos años. Obras maestras del documental (Leni Riefenstahl) y grotescas películas antisemitas (Veit Harlan) es lo que mejor hemos conocido; sin embargo, por medio quedan cerca de 1.000 películas de todos los géneros a las se ha podido acceder en escasas ocasiones. Todo fue obra del régimen y de los profesionales que por diferentes circunstancias se quedaron en Alemania esos años (unos 2.000 se exiliaron) y que como Marco da Costa señala en el monográfico sobre este tema de Febrero de 2018 en Dirigido por… fueron: “Mujeres y hombres que con su trabajo formaron parte del imaginario colectivo alemán y cuya principal función fue la de entretener y adoctrinar durante 12 años al espectador de la época. Colaboracionistas pasivos, oportunistas, arribistas o simplemente advenedizos, todos, sin excepción, se pusieron al servicio de un tipo de cine que ayudaría en muchos casos a narcotizar al ciudadano alemán de todo lo que ocurría a su alrededor, desde el boicot inicial a los negocios regentados por judíos hasta su exterminio final en los campos de concentración”.

Deseemos por el bien del arte y sobre todo de la Humanidad que no vuelvan a darse las condiciones para que se repita esta historia.

Erneut drohen uns gelbe Gefahren, sie geht aber auch diesmal nicht von Chinesen aus, wie oft behauptet wird!

Der Buerger wuergt und wird dabei geortet. Er hatte sich zuvor selber auch noch ein Essen bestellt. ("Sushi und Nudel", "Pizza Paradies", "Doener Express")

Oder es sind Polizisten an dem Versuch selber auch mit beteiligt!

Weswegen auch mein naechste Vorhaben oder Plan lautet, in den naechsten Tagen werde ich den Versuch unternehmen, die Generalstaatsanwaltschaft und Anwalt in der Sache versuchsweise zu kontaktieren in seinem Buero. Man soll mich nicht sogleich verhaften und in ein Gefaengnis verbringen! Und dass ich gespraechsbereit waere, ist der Staat es selber auch! Wie auch die Justiz! Insgesamt hielte ich das fuer sehr viel besser! Fuer mich wie fuer andere! Fuer alle!

Zwar bestand man dann mir gegenueber gleich mehrfach darauf, dennoch blieb ich bei meiner bisherigen sehr stark ablehnenden Haltung, am Ende setzte ich mich mit ihr durch!

Gelbe wie braune Gefahr! Erstmals sind sie hier vielleicht sogar beide gleichzeitig zu sehen so als real existierende Gefahren! Denn auch das Brot weist eine deutlich braunere Faerbung auf wie sonst!

La revelación del Dakar 2023: Lucas Moraes sigue sorprendiendo y es segundo en la general

Quienes han seguido el rally raid en Brasil en los últimos años no se sorprenderán de la velocidad de Lucas Moraes, tricampeón del Nacional de Rally Raid y bicampeón del Sertoes (2019 y 2022). Recién haciendo su primer Dakar y apenas su segunda carrera en desierto (la primera de más de 500 km, que vendría siendo la distancia que recorre en un día), el piloto brasileño se había propuesto estar en la lucha del Top 15. Ha transcurrido una semana y media de carrera y la situación es muchísimo mejor que esa y es segundo en la clasificación general detrás de Nasser Al-Attiyah.

Moraes ha tenido una actuación muy consistente y donde acompañado por el experimentado navegante Timo Gottschalk (campeón del Dakar 2011 con Nasser Al-Attiyah) han ido siempre a un ritmo inteligente sin arriesgar de más la máquina ni las posibilidades de sufrir un accidente. Al final puede ser que esta forma conservadora de abordar la carrera haya sido clave para su posición en la general, ya que prácticamente todos sus rivales han tenido un día desastroso por excesivos pinchazos, por problemas mecánicos o accidentes. Hoy fue el turno de Henk Lategan y perdió más de 50 minutos cayendo de segundo a cuarto. Si Moraes logra evitar uno de estos percances tiene grandes opciones a obtener un lugar en el podio, aunque pueda ceder la segunda posición con Sebastien Loeb que viene descontando fuerte.

“El Dakar nunca deja de sorprendernos. Justo al principio vimos que Carlos había volcado y también vimos a Henk (Lategan) con algunos problemas. Decidimos que simplemente mantendríamos las cosas tranquilas. Tuvimos mucha paciencia hoy y dejamos pasar algunos autos. Estamos enfocados en la general, ese es el panorama principal para nosotros” declaró Lucas en el bivouac una vez concluida la novena etapa. 

Veremos si en los cinco días restantes Moraes logra conseguir lo que sería un resultado histórico para Brasil en los autos.

“Ehe im Schatten” (“Marriage in the Shadows”) (1947)

After the Nazis take power in Germany Jewish actress Elisabeth Wendland (Ilse Steppat) is banned from pursuing her profession while her husband Hans (Paul Klinger) becomes a very popular actor. The official bodies urge him to get divorced from his wife but he adamantly refuses to do so. The pressure on the couple is constantly increasing. One day they receive the message that Elisabeth shall be deported to a concentration camp in a few days. Hans and Elisabeth see no other way out than to commit suicide.

This deeply moving film is based on the tragic fate of then famous actor Joachim Gottschalk (1904 - 1941). He refused to divorce his Jewish wife, actress Meta Wolff (1902-1941). When his wife and his eight year old son Michael should be deported to a concentration camp the family committed suicide on 6th November 1941. Maria Maetzig, the mother of the director of this film, Kurt Maezig, also committed suicide because she was Jewish and couldn’t stand the barbaric persecution by the Nazis anymore.

Helmut Fischer was the son of a businessman and a tailor and grew up in the Munich district of Neuhausen in Donnersbergerstraße 50a, where he also went to school. When the secondary school rejected him, he joined Otto Falckenberg's drama school, which he quit after a short time. In the subsequent period Fischer worked as a theater actor. In 1952 was his stage debut at the Würzburg city theatre as Albrecht III in Friedrich Hebbel's Agnes Bernauer. The reviews were devastating.

For almost 20 years Fischer remained largely unknown and had to deal with minor supporting roles. Among other things, he worked at the Munich "Oktoberfest" at the Zuban show as part of a zebra's behind. In 1953 he married the dancer Utta Martin, with whom he lived up to his death (44 years). In 1961 saw the actor's debut in Bavarian Television: as a hairdresser in Ludwig Thoma's comedy Die Lokalbahn. Fischer described himself as "terrible" and said in retrospect: "Richtig g'schämt hab' ich mich, wie überzogen ich damals g'spielt hab (I was terribly ashamed about my totally excessive acting)". As he was under-worked with acting alone, Fischer also worked as a film critic for the Munich Abendzeitung.

In 1972 he played in the Bavarian Television's first episode of the Tatort series, as assistant to then-time Inspector Veigl (played by Gustl Bayrhammer). When Veigl was "retired" in 1981, Fischer was "promoted" to Commissioner Ludwig Lenz and as such he solved a total of seven cases until 1987. In 1974 Helmut Fischer, in his favourite café Münchner Freiheit met director Helmut Dietl. The latter recognised his friend's true talent and in 1980 gave him a major role in the TV series Der ganz normale Wahnsinn in which Fischer for the first time got to play a manquéed playboy.

Memorial for "Monaco Franze" (Helmut Fischer) at Münchner Freiheit The final breakthrough came in 1983 with Helmut Fischer's series Monaco Franze – Der ewige Stenz. Again Helmut Dietl was the director, Patrick Süskind cooperated on the scripts to almost all episodes. In the series, which has now reached cult status among fans, Fischer alongside Ruth Maria Kubitschek, Christine Kaufmann, Karl Obermayr [de] and Erni Singerl [de] in inimitable way embodied an easygoing dandy, charmer and ladies' men, who always manages to master awkward situations with a sheepy smile. Famous sayings by the character role like "A bisserl was geht immer (Anything goes)" were adapted into daily language use. Matching this, Fischer also recorded a successful single titled "Spatzl (Schau wia i schau)) (Sweetheart (Look like I'm looking))".

From now on, the actor was busy with roles whose character were always based on Stenz though. Until the end of his life Fischer kept assuring that the figure of Monaco Franze had nothing to do with his real life. In the mid-1980s, Fischer played with Thomas Gottschalk and Michael Winslow in the two Zärtliche Chaoten films, from 1987 to 1992 he could be seen as "Josefbärli" along Veronika Fitz and Ilse Neubauer in the series Die Hausmeisterin (The House Keeper). Fischer enjoyed his last success in the series Ein Schloß am Wörthersee (A castle on the Wörthersee), where he played the absentminded estate manager Leo Laxeneder, and as the fictitious mayor of Hohenwaldau, Peter Elfinger in Peter and Paul alongside Hans Clarin.

In 1993 Helmut Fischer was diagnosed with cancer. He kept this diagnosis largely secret, only his wife Utta knew about it. In 1996, the actor underwent treatment by the well-known and controversial cancer specialist Julius Hackethal. In November he celebrated his 70th anniversary with a great number of friends and colleagues. At the occasion the told the press: "Das Leben macht sich ja mehr und mehr aus dem Staub (Life is more and more buzzing off)". Eight months later Fischer, to the surprise of the common public, died in Chiemgau. More than 1,000 people participated in the funeral service at the mortuary of Munich's northern cemetery and the subsequent funeral at the Bogenhausen cemetery (gravesite no. 2-4-2) on 19 June 1997. In his funeral speech Munich's Lord Mayor Christian Ude, a friend and neighbour of Fischer, said: "... Populär war er in ganz Deutschland - in München wurde er geliebt. (He was popular throughout Germany - in Munich, he was loved.)"
