ZOLTIN PEETER - VOORBIJ DE NOORD

Korte film bij een in memoriam tentoonstelling van het werk van Zoltin Peeter in Museum Belvédère. Zoltin Peeter SALUT!

Opnames zijn in april 2019 kort voor zijn zelfgekozen sterfdatum op 15 mei dat jaar gemaakt in zijn boerderij in Hallum. Samen met Han Steenbruggen bezocht ik de kunstenaar en maakte de film in opdracht van Museum Belvédère. Nu weer actueel naar aanleiding van de tentoonstelling  Zoltin Peeter – Betekend de Ruimte; 7 oktober 2023 – 4 februari 2024 (westvleugel). Er wordt een ruime keuze uit zijn grote tekeningen getoond in samenhang met werken van bevriende kunstenaars en werken uit de collectie van Museum Belvédère.

De tekeningen van Zoltin Peeter zijn opgebouwd uit enkele kernachtige motieven. Vormen die ruimte open laten, die zwaarte en lichtheid bij elkaar brengen. Het is de essentie van wat hij waarneemt, die hij in zijn werk wil weergeven. Geen herkenbare landschappen, maar beeldtekens. Binnen het spectrum van zwart- en grijstinten doen alle details ertoe: de verschillende hardheden van potlood, het grote verschil in karakter van een inktlijn of een houtskoollijn.

Yayoi Kusama is terug in het Stedelijk Museum Schiedam. Niet in persoon, maar in de vorm van een expositie gewijd aan de periode dat ze in Nederland verbleef. In 1967 zorgde een performance van de Japanse kunstenares in dit zelfde museum voor  een heuse rel. Tijdens een ‘happening’ beschilderde ze het lichaam van haar collega-kunstenaar Jan Schoonhoven. Het gebeuren leidde tot een brief van 59 verontruste burgers die vonden dat het museum zich moest richten op moderne kunst en niet op ‘dergelijk vertoon’. De VVD-fractieleider in de gemeenteraad stelde vragen en voor museumdirecteur Hans Paalman dreigde ontslag.

De in Japan geboren en opgegroeide Yayoi Kusama verhuisde in 1957 naar Amerika. In New York ontmoet ze de Nederlandse kunstenaar Hans Peeters, een van de oprichters van de Nul-groep. Ze komt in 1965 naar Nederland, waar Peeters haar in contact brengt met de directeuren van Internationale Galerij Orez, waar ze haar eerste solopresentatie in Europa krijgt. Het is het begin van een jarenlange samenwerking. In 1967 presenteert Kusama haar werk in het Stedelijk Museum Schiedam.

Kusama sluit met haar werk aan op de seksuele revolutie, maar haar beelden komen voort uit een meer persoonlijke bron: haar eigen jeugd. Ze heeft een obsessie voor eten, bloemen en fallussen die onlosmakelijk verbonden is met een (seksueel) trauma uit haar jeugd. Al van jongs af aan heeft ze te kampen met waanbeelden en visioenen die haar hele leven en haar werk sterk beïnvloeden. Kusama’s obsessies komen voort uit haar grootste angsten. Door motieven eindeloos te herhalen bedwingt ze die angsten. “Ik ben doodsbang voor het idee dat iets langs en lelijks als een penis bij mij naar binnenkomt, en daarom maak ik er zoveel van. Ik maak er zoveel dat ik mezelf begraaf in het proces van het maken. Dit noem ik ‘obliteration’.”

Speciaal voor de tentoonstelling in Schiedam maakt Kusama een gouden en een zilveren Phallic Girl, etalagepoppen bedekt met katoenen fallussen en bespoten met goud- en zilververf.

Yayoi Kusama wordt beroemd met haar ‘polka dots’: eindeloos herhaalde stippen. Rond het midden van de jaren zestig begint ze haar fallusobjecten op deze manier te decoreren. Op de vraag wat de polka dots betekenen, antwoordde Kusama in 1967: “Ik wil de mensen gelukkig maken met mijn polka dots. Zij moeten een doorlopende lijn vormen en eenheid brengen. Eigenlijk zou ik overal polka dots willen aanbrengen, op straat, op de gevels van huizen.”

Een bijzonder werk op de huidige tentoonstelling in Schiedam is Narcissus Garden. Op de Biënnale van Venetië in 1966 presenteert de kunstenares, buiten het officiële programma, in een park Narcissus Garden: honderden spiegelende bollen. De kunstenares biedt de bollen voor twee dollar per stuk te koop aan, maar de organisatie van de biënnale verbiedt haar de bollen voor zo weinig geld te verkopen. Met de bollen houdt de kunstenares het biënnalepubliek een spiegel voor. Het is een stevige kritiek op het marktgerichte kunstsysteem.

Najaar 1967 opent Galerie Orez de tweede solotentoonstelling van Yayoi Kusama: Infinity love room. De obsessieve herhaling van stippen beperkt zich niet langer tot  haar schilderijen en objecten. Ze bedekken nu ook de galerie en uiteindelijk de bezoekers. Tijdens de opening beschildert Kusama mensen en nodigt ze de aanwezigen uit dat ook te doen.

Het Boeddhistisch Dagblad publiceerde vandaag een gastbijdrage van mijn hand over zenleraar Ton Lathouwers, mijn twijfels over Bhagwan toen ik diens hoofdkwartier in Poona (India) bezocht en mijn disrespectvolle gedrag toen ik tijdens een latere Indiareis de goochelaar en het seksuele roofdier Sai Babba gehuld in een korte broek wou gaan uitlachen in zijn ashram.

‘Je bent aanvaard zoals je bent’

Tien jaar geleden voerde ik een telefoongesprek met fotograaf Jacques Peeters over Ton Lathouwers. Jacques beoefent Chinees zenboeddhisme, ik had me verdiept in solo-zen uit Japan.

Ton Lathouwers kenden Jacques en ik allebei. Lathouwers is de voorman van het Nederlandse ch’an-boeddhisme, het Chinese zen beoefend door fotograaf Jacques Peeters.

Hij was destijds gepensioneerd als fotograaf van het Dagblad voor Noord-Limburg. Ik kende hem van mijn tijd als journalist bij het toen nog concurrerende Dagblad de Limburger.

Over zijn Chinese zenbeoefening, geïnspireerd door Ton Lathouwers, zei Jacques Peeters aan de telefoon: ´Als ik niet was gaan mediteren had ik allang zelfmoord gepleegd. ´

Zo’n jaar daarvoor interviewde ik Ton Lathouwers, de man die het leven van fotograaf Jacques redde, in zijn Nijmeegse flat. Dat deed ik samen met Emile Hollman. We studeerden allebei journalistiek in Tilburg. We hadden Oosterse Renaissance van Han Fortmann gelezen, een boekje dat ook voor Ton Lathouwers heel belangrijk was.

Emile en ik deelden een levendige belangstelling voor Dostojevski. We hadden een afkeer van holistisch angehauchte new age-wauwelaars. Tenslotte mochten we graag van mening verschillen over meisjes en de vraag of we in het Trappistenklooster bij Tilburg een bier brouwende monnik op zondag na de mis in de abdijkantine mochten bevragen over zijn bezigheden door de week, als hij indachtig de Regel van zijn Trappisten-orde verplicht moest zwijgen.

Ik kan me niet precies herinneren waarom ik een decennium geleden, kort na mijn echtscheiding, Jacques Peeters belde, de zen-fotograaf. Hij stond bekend om zijn talent om op locatie eerst langdurig naar van alles te kijken voor hij zijn beelden maakte.

Van een schrijvende oud-collega van het Dagblad voor Noord-Limburg weet ik dat Jacques zich tijdens interviews niet alleen onderscheidde door de verstilde foto´s die hij dan maakte, na veel rondkijken. Tijdens het eigenlijke vraaggesprek was hij niet zelden de eigenlijke interviewer. De journalist hoefde alleen maar mee te schrijven.

Rond 1995 vonden Emile Hollman en ik onszelf terug onder de Bodhiboom in India, waar de Boeddha na 49 dagen non-stop mediteren verlicht raakte. Dat gebeurde nadat hij eerst vorstelijk verwend leefde in een paleis. Bij een eerste tochtje buiten de muren raakte de prins blijvend overstuur van het lijden dat hij zag.

Siddharta nam letterlijk afscheid van zijn weelderige leven. Hij verliet het paleis en werd een asceet. Na onder de Bodhiboom in Noord-India de staat van verlichting te hebben bereikt, verspreidde Gautama zijn heilsfilosofie met groot succes.

In India wou dat trouwens niet zo lukken, elders in Azië wel. Aangekomen in China zorgden boeddhistische zendelingen uiteindelijk voor het ontstaan van Ch’an, het Chinese zen dat Ton Lathouwers later in Nederland ging doceren.

Toen ik hem in de jaren ´80 interviewde met Emile Hollman, viel me op dat Ton Lathouwers ergens helemaal geen klassieke boeddhist was. Als hoogleraar Slavische talen in Leuven raakte hij diep onder de indruk van Russische schrijvers. Hij stond ook verder voorbeeldig open voor vrijwel iedere anders denkende.

Een paar jaar geleden was ik definitief verkocht toen ik Ton Lathouwers in een You Tube-interview hoorde toegeven dat zijn brein ook na tientallen jaren mediteren nog steeds een drukke transistorradio was als hij zittend op een kussen nergens aan probeerde te denken. Dat kan ik na vele jaren zen-meditatie alleen maar beamen.

Fotograaf Jacques Peeters van het Dagblad voor Noord-Limburg, de overtuigde leerling van Ton Lathouwers, ziet dat mogelijk anders. De gewezen journalist Emile Hollman van het Limburgs Dagblad misschien ook. Het zou kunnen dat de leer van Boeddha nog steeds een heel belangrijke rol speelt in zijn leven. We zouden nog altijd van mening kunnen verschillen over de bruikbaarheid daarvan.

Daarover praatten we ook al tamelijk indringend toen we tijdens een andere reis naar India in Poona belandden. Dat was destijds het hoofdkwartier van de Bhagwan, later Osho. Deze goeroe stond niet alleen door zijn verzameling Rolls Royces bekend om zijn ruime interpretatie van Boeddha´s ascetische verlichtingsleer.

Toen Emile en ik het ook nodig vonden de ashram van de oplichter en matige goochelaar Sai Baba elders in India te ontheiligen, waren we het ook al niet helemaal eens. Bijvoorbeeld over de vraag hoe disrespectvol het van me was om daar in korte broek te verschijnen.

Volgens diverse Europese adepten van Sai Baba, even fanatiek als intellectueel ogend, was dat voldoende reden om me ver uit de buurt te houden van Zijne Heiligheid, die niet veel later door de mand viel, en niet alleen omdat Sai Baba een ordinair seksueel roofdier was.

Een twijfelende, bijna wanhopige benadering van het lijden kenmerkte Ton Lathouwers, de zenleraar uit Nijmegen. Na zijn echtscheiding belandde hij in een existentiële crisis. Hij legde zijn misère voor aan zijn Chinese zenmeester. Die zei alleen maar: Je bent aanvaard zoals je bent.

Het klinkt als een spannend jongensboek, een schat op zolder. En het gebeurde in de Zutphense Laarstraat: in 1985 zag de toenmalige eigenaar van Laarstraat 83 tijdens werkzaamheden op zolder een lichtspleet in de achtergevel. Hij verwijderde een loszittende steen en zette de stofzuigerslang erin om het gruis weg te zuigen. Binnen enkele seconden zoog hij een muntschat op… 254 zilveren en 15 koperen munten uit de zeventiende eeuw bleken in de muur te zijn verstopt in een linnen zakje. De schat werd gemeld bij de Rijksmunt en beschreven. Daarna bleef de vondst decennialang onopgemerkt. Tot 2022, toen de munten opnieuw werden bestudeerd en gefotografeerd door de archeologen van de gemeente Zutphen. Maar nu wilden we ook weten wie de schat kort na 1660 had verstopt, en waarom. Wat was het geldbedrag toen waard? En waarom is de schat nooit meer opgehaald? Op al deze vragen geeft de nieuwste aflevering van de serie Zutphense Archeologische Publicaties (158) antwoord. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat de schatvondst een representatief beeld geeft van de muntcirculatie van ‘gewoon’ geld in het midden van de zeventiende eeuw in een vestingstad als Zutphen. Alle munten zijn afgebeeld en beschreven. Fascinerend verhaal Het eerste exemplaar overhandigde archeoloog en een van de samenstellers van het boek, Michel Groothedde, aan wethouder Sjoerd Wannet, die er direct nieuwsgierig in bladerde: “Een fascinerend verhaal; het is natuurlijk de droom van elk kind om een echte schat te vinden. En een inwoner van Zutphen vond daadwerkelijk zo’n schat. Een ook nog eentje die veel vragen opriep. Onze archeologen hebben zich er grondig in verdiept en zijn nu met antwoorden gekomen. De ontdekking van de muntschat en zeker nu de publicatie met de uitkomsten van het onderzoek dragen bij aan onze kennis en begrip van het verleden. Om precies te zijn: het leven in de zeventiende eeuw in onze stad. I only have two books from UC Press’ California Natural History Guides series, and I vacillate between wanting to have more and wanting to have fewer. On the one hand, some volumes in the series are quite cool and unusual. On the other, they seem more difficult to find these days, and I’m not quite sure I like them all that much. They’re a little too academic for my taste, but this California owl guide is quite well done.
