History of St. Ben’s
“The roots of St Ben’s Community Meal are found in the hearts of Michael and Nettie Cullen. In 1966, inspired by the philosophy of Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker Movement, this Irish immigrant couple founded Casa Maria House, located about a mile from St Benedict the Moor Parish. Casa Maria's purpose was to promote the practice of direct and personal sharing with the poor by receiving guests in their kitchen for a meal. A growing number of men, women and children from the neighborhood joined them for this daily meal, and it rapidly outgrew their small space.  They were forced to seek larger quarters. In collaboration with Capuchin Alex Luzi and after much prayer and reflection, St. Ben's Community Meal was moved to its current location on November 13, 1970. From the beginning, there was a strong emphasis on the community aspect of the Meal. This was evidenced on two fronts. First, sponsor groups from a variety of churches, organizations and civic groups throughout the wider Milwaukee community committed to providing the Meal from Sunday through Friday evenings. Secondly, a sense of community and relationship was generated within the Meal hall itself as sponsors, volunteers, guests, and staff came together to enjoy a nutritious meal in an environment of hospitality and safety. Now over forty-some years later, St Ben's and its many supporters continue to host the Community Meal, Sunday through Friday from 5:15 to 6:30p."
Ben’s Community Meal is a ministry of Capuchin Community Services which also operates the House of Peace at 1702 W. Walnut St. They are part of the St. Joseph’s Province of the Capuchin Franciscans. Over the years St. Ben’s has vastly expanded its services, in particular in the past year through the opening of the gathering space at 903 W State St. They offer showers, laundry, clothing, a barber, health care, as well as supportive housing services in the St. Anthony Apartments. The funding for Capuchin Community Services comes from a committed corps of financial supporters. At the House of Peace, they partner with Hunger Taskforce, as well as have vital partnerships with Marquette University Law Clinic, and UW Milwaukee Health Center. The generous grant making community of Southeast Wisconsin is a regular source of income. They employ 20 people and have tens of thousands of volunteers serve with them every year at the House of Peace and St Ben’s Community Meal. They have ties to many other organizations in Milwaukee. They have formal relationships with Heartland Alliance, Justice Point, UW Milwaukee, and Guest House. They don’t belong to any professional organizations.

The Moon of Pejeng, also known as the Pejeng Moon, in Bali is the largest single-cast bronze kettle drum in the world. and "the largest known relic from Southeast Asia's Bronze Age period." It is "considered highly sacred by local people." It is thought to be a relic of early rice cultivation rituals. The drum is 186.6 centimetres (73.5 in) high and the diameter of the tympano is 160 centimetres (63 in). It is kept at Pura Penataran Sasih Temple in Pejeng, near Ubud, in the Petauan River valley which, along with the adjacent Pakerisan River valley, forms the heartland of South Bali where complex irrigated rice culture first evolved on the island.
The Dong Son people made the drum around 300 B.C., more than two thousand years ago. According to Balinese legend, the Pejeng Moon was a wheel of the chariot that pulled the real moon through the night sky. One night, as the chariot was passing over Pejeng, the wheel detached and fell to earth, landing in a tree, where it glowed nearly as brightly as the real moon. This light disturbed a thief who, annoyed, climbed the tree and urinated on it; the thief paid for his sacrilege with his life. The moon eventually cooled and has been preserved as a sacred relic by the local villagers. It is the largest and most complete type of drum known as the Pejeng type drums which have been found in Bali and Java, Indonesia. The Pejeng Moon was first reported to the western world by G.E. Rumphius in his book The Ambonese Curiosity Cabinet, published in 1705. The Moon was first systematically described by the Dutch artist W.O.J. Nieuwenkamp who reproduced the famous face motif.
Georg Eberhard Rumphius (originally: Rumpf; baptized c. November 1, 1627 – June 15, 1702) was a German-born botanist employed by the Dutch East India Company in what is now eastern Indonesia, and is best known for his work Herbarium Amboinense produced in the face of severe personal tragedies, including the death of his wife and a daughter in an earthquake, going blind from glaucoma, loss of his library and manuscripts in major fire, and losing early copies of his book when the ship carrying it was sunk. In addition to his major contributions to plant systematics, he is also remembered for his skills as an ethnographer and his frequent defense of Ambonese peoples against colonialism.

Russian Empire (1702 - 1704 AD)
Tumblr media
(NOTE: I promise, I’ll try and make these updates cover a larger time span. I haven’t had a great deal of time this weekend to dedicate to this, so hopefully you’ll get a larger span in the near future.)
The major reforms in the Imperial Administration have done their part to secure the people’s loyalty to the Tsar. Over the course of the past few years, Governmental approval ratings have jumped from 55% to 91%. the Army of Muscovy, now renamed to the Army of the Baltic, has replenished its forces, and has managed to consolidate the Empire’s authority in the great jewel to the Imperial Crown that is St. Petersburg. The Army of the Baltic has not encountered any major Swedish forces. However, the Swedish forces originally intended to reinforce the garrison in St. Petersburg prior to our own assault has slipped past the border guard and has brought havoc upon the Imperial Heartland, and has raided a number of towns. Heretic missionaries continue to fool the faithful into accepting their false doctrines, with our own Missionary busy preserving the piety of the faithful in Ottoman occupied Moldavia. He has thus been diverted to prevent further Lutheran incursion into the region.
For reasons which are currently unknown, the treacherous British Empire has declared war on the Empire, and dispatched a small force to the South, Northwest of Georgia, which the perfidious Turks have since anexed. Fortunately, the Army of Ukraine was able to be diverted from Crimea to the Caucasus, where they won a decisive victory at Don Voisko, where General John Churchill, the British leader, was slain by flanking Ukrainian reinforcements to the regional garrison. Unfortunately, the Ukrainian Army must now be dedicated to the Caucasus to provide the feeble Cossack Militia with a bulwark to protect our Southern borders from Turkish and Dagestani invasion. This means that the conquest of Crimea must be temporarily aborted until a third force from Muscovy can be dedicated to an invasion of Crimea and the Baltics.
The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth attempted to draw Mother Russia into a war with the Bourbon Kings. This request was ignored, given Russia’s cordial relations with France and with the Imperial Army already too dedicted to four wars. A smal Muscovite force has been raised to combat the Swedish raiders. It is anticipated that this will soon make up a force to finish off the Tartars and begin the liberation of Christian Europe, and the Holy Patriarchate of Constantinople. The Baltic Army will soon move on to liberate Estonia, which has been streaming in reinforcements to the raiders. Despite these obstacles, the Imperial Army continues to make headway in securing Russian hegemony over the World.
