World Hepatitis Day is an important global event observed on July 28th each year to raise awareness about viral hepatitis and promote actions to combat this preventable and treatable disease
Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that is caused by a variety of infectious viruses and noninfectious agents leading to a range of health problems, some of which can be fatal.
There are five main strains of the hepatitis virus, referred to as types A, B, C, D, and E. While they all cause liver disease, they differ in important ways including modes of transmission, severity of the illness, geographical distribution, and prevention methods.
Symptoms of hepatitis A, B, and C may include fever, malaise, loss of appetite, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal discomfort, dark-colored urine, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes).
Safe and effective vaccines are available to prevent hepatitis B virus (HBV).
This vaccine also prevents the development of hepatitis D virus (HDV) and given at birth strongly reduces transmission risk from mother to child.
Chronic hepatitis B infection can be treated with antiviral agents.

World Hepatitis Day – Be the Voice for Hepatitis Awareness
Millions of people have viral hepatitis. Many don’t even know it.
Often this is due to stigma, fear of discrimination, lack of community awareness, or understanding of the disease.
As the CDC explains, viral hepatitis spreads in different ways:
• Hepatitis A usually spreads when a person ingests food or water contaminated with the stool of an infected person.
• Hepatitis B and C can spread through direct contact with an infected person’s blood: for instance, through sex, sharing needles and syringes, or childbirth.
• Hepatitis B can also be transmitted through contact with any bodily fluids of a person infected with the disease.
What you can do?
• Share and help others learn facts about the three most common types of viral hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C.
• Bring awareness to the hidden epidemic, including its risk factors, symptoms, and complications, and ultimately encourage testing.
• Find out what vaccines are recommended
• End stigma and discrimination
• Act now to make hepatitis elimination a reality through political will and funding.
