Sridevi died due to the “accidental drowning” in her hotel bathtub after losing consciousness, according to Dubai police. Jiah Khan

Jiah Khan was a British American 25- years old actress who was well known for her films like Nishabd with Amitabh Bachchan which was her debut film. She also appeared in films like Ghajini and Housefull. She ended her life on June 3, 2013, in Mumbai. She hung herself in her apartment roof fan.

On June 7, 2013, a six-page suicide note was found by her sister where she directly accused actor Suraj Pancholi, son of actors Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab, whom she was dating at that point. On August 1, 2016, the CBI declared the cause of her death as ‘suicide by hanging’.

Her mother alleged that it was a murder and not suicide, but no victims were found or disclosed. The case was closed and buried under the name of murder and still, it’s a question if that was a suicide or not and her death is still considered as one of the most unsolved deaths in Bollywood.

Divya Bharti

Divya Bharti was one of the gorgeous actresses who made her Bollywood debut with the action thriller Vishwathma. She is best known for her films in Shola Aur Shabnam and Deewana. She got married to Sajid Nadiadwala at the early age of 18.

She died in April 1993, after she fell from the fifth floor of the balcony of her Tulsi apartment in Mumbai. There were rumors that she was intoxicated at a party after which she went to her balcony and lost her grip and fell. There were also reports that a fair amount of alcohol was found in her blood. It was believed that the cause of her death was heavy internal bleeding at the back of her head.

There were also rumors that the actress was intoxicated at the party which resulted in her death. There were many speculations that pointed her death towards a murder but the case was closed in 1998 and the final reason was stated as an accidental death but her death is one of the most mysterious deaths in Bollywood.

Parveen Babi

Parveen Babi was considered the most popular actress of Bollywood during the period of 70s and 80s. She was considered a glamorous fashion icon throughout her career. She starred in Blockbusters such as Deewar, Namak Halaal, Amar Akbar Anthony, and so on. She was the first actress to grace the cover of a magazine named Time Magazine in 1976.

She was being rumored to have diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and was found hanging at her house in Mumbai in January 2005. Guru Dutt

Nafisa Joseph was an Indian model and video jockey, beauty queen turned into Bollywood actress. Manmohan Desai

Indian Forensic Labs Set to Double DNA Testing Volume

According to the recent estimates, the number of the DNA profiles have been developed from the crime scene evidence has doubled from a year from 10000 cases tested in 2017 to nearly 20000 this year. This increase in the DNA casework can be attributed to an upward trend in reporting of sexual violence cases which is owing to the public awareness and activism along with some of the steps to be taken by the government to upgrade the forensic and police infrastructure keeping the women in mind.

While the evidence from the recent study shows that the confidence-building measures like the opening of all the women police stations has also increased the reporting crimes against the women by 22%, upgrading of forensic infrastructure at both the state and central levels has also enabled the more collection and testing of the DNA samples by the investigators.

Reinforcing the trend Vivek Sahajpal, Assistant Director, Himachal Pradesh State FSL said, “There has been a substantial increase in requests for DNA profiling, and nearly 50% of the total crime cases we receive are linked to rape and sexual assault. To keep pace with the increased demand, we are now implementing new DNA technology upgrades that will help us bring down the number of unsolved crimes in the state.”

Tim Schellberg, Founder & President, Gordon Thomas Honeywell—GA notes, “It is good to see India conducting more DNA tests to expedite justice but considering the scale of crime in the country, especially sexual violence against women & children, this only skims the surface.  If a country is going to fight rape it needs to fully embrace forensic DNA, the gold standard of evidence. Forensic DNA has also emerged as the most reliable crime-fighting technology across the globe. Many countries nowadays are effectively using the forensic labs and protocols to test, collect and compare the DNA at crime scenes with that of suspects with the promising results.

Largest fossil of Ichthyosaurus was discovered

Scientists from the United Kingdom and Germany have discovered the largest Ichthyosaurus on record. Key highlights • The new specimen is estimated to be between 3 and 3.5 m long and is an adult female. • Ichthyosaurs were a highly successful group of sea-going reptiles that became extinct about 90 million years ago. • Often misidentified as swimming dinosaurs, these reptiles appeared before the first dinosaurs had evolved.

Central Government has issued flood warning to 11 states.

The Union Government has issued a moderate flood warning in 11 states of India, keeping in view the forecast by Met Department, which predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 48 to 72 hours. The warning has been issued to states including Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Met Department Forecast The weather forecasting body has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy fall in areas of East Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Konkan, Coastal Goa and Ghat areas of South Interior Karnataka. The department has also warned of more heavy intermittent spells in the next few hours in Mumbai and its satellite cities. The rain is reported to be the worst the city has witnessed since July 2005 when it was devastated by floods. According to the department, the continuous downpour is likely to lead to a rise in water level of Mahi, Sabarmati, Banas, Godavari, Krishna, Tapi, Cauvery rivers and their tributaries, resulting in moderate flooding.

Gobindobhog rice receives Geographical Indication Status

West Bengal’s Gobindobhog rice recently received the Geographical Indication (GI) status from the Geographical Indications Registry (GIR). The Gobindobhog rice is a speciality from Burdwan district of West Bengal. The region of Burdwan (now divided into the districts of east and west Burdwan) is known as the rice bowl of Bengal. As a result of getting the GI tag, rice from other regions or rice of other varieties cannot be branded as ‘Gobindobhog’. Therefore, the marketability of the rice would be strengthened, for the local, national and international markets. The Gobindobhog rice is mainly cultivated in east Burdwan district, located in the southern basin of the Damodar river in the Raina 1, Raina 2 and Khandaghosh blocks. As of 2016, the rice was cultivated in an area of 35 hectares. Of this, 20 hectares were spread over Raina 1 and Raina 2 blocks. The south Damodar belt has been the traditional area of Gobindobhog rice cultivation.

Yuva skill development Programme

The Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated “YUVA - Skill Development Programme”. YUVA is an initiative by Delhi Police under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana. Key highlights • The YUVA initiative by Delhi Police aims to connect with youth by upgrading their skill as per their competencies. • The programme will help the youth to get a gainful employment under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojna (PMKVY) under the Union Ministry of Skill Development. • Delhi Police has tied up with National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for providing mass job linked skill training for the selected youth. • National Skill Development Corporation will provide skill training to the youth under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojna. • The Confederation of Indian Industry will provide job linked training through its Sector Skill Councils who are connected to industry and thereby provide job guarantee. • A total of 32 police station buildings have been identified where Skill Development Centres would be opened at the earliest. Background Those candidates belong to categories such as School dropouts, Juvenile offenders, Victims of crimes and families in dire state due to incarceration of the bread earner of the family, mostly from the underprivileged colonies. As of now, 2269 candidates have been selected to be trained by 36 training partners in 45 skills in the next three months.

The United Nations (UN) observes the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances on August 30 each year. What Do People Do? On August 30 each year, organizations such as the UN and Amnesty International play an active role in raising awareness that enforced disappearance is a crime and should not be used as a tool to deal with situations of conflict. Many activists openly share personal stories, via the media or public event, about victims of enforced disappearances and the impact that these disappearances have on their families and communities. Background Enforced disappearance is used as a strategy to spread terror within the society. It occurs when people are arrested, detained or abducted against their will and when governments refuse to disclose the whereabouts of these people. Enforced disappearance is a global problem and is not restricted to a specific region of the world. Who is affected? • The victims themselves are affected the most as not only are they subjected to frequent torture but they are also in constant fear for their lives. • They are well aware that their location is unknown and that the chances are slim that anyone will come to their aid. • They are deprived of all their rights as a human being and are left at the mercy of their captors. • Enforced disappearances also generally violate various economic, social and cultural rights for both the victims as well as their families: - The right to protection and assistance to the family - The right to an adequate standard of living - The right to health - The right to education Though enforced disappearances were once largely seen as a product of military dictatorships, it has now become a global problem, as it is not restricted to a specific region of the world.

Deadline for linking Aadhaar to welfare schemes extended to December 31

The Union government on Wednesday informed the Supreme Court that the deadline for the mandatory linking of Aadhaar to social welfare schemes for availing their benefits has been extended from September 30 to December 31, 2017. Background:- A series of notifications issued by various central ministries under Section 7 of the Aadhaar Act of 2016 required beneficiaries to enroll for Aadhaar to continue getting the benefits. The issue:- Some petitioners have challenged the validity of more than 17 government schemes insisting Aadhaar for availing benefits of midday meals, disability pension, Bhopal gas tragedy victims, among other programmes on the basis that mandatory requirement of Aadhaar for these schemes constrict rights and freedoms which a citizen has long been enjoying unless and until they part with their personal biometric information to the government and in turn collection of biometric data, including fingerprints, and its storage as a central pository per second puts the State in an extremely dominant position in relation to the individual citizen. The recent verdict in favour of the common man’s right to privacy against the State has a crucial bearing on the Aadhaar petitions, which had argued that Aadhaar’s use of biometric details like fingerprints and iris scans violated bodily and informational privacy. So due to this issue the deadline is now being extended till December 31st 2017.

Minimum wage to vary across states

The Code on Wages Bill proposed by the Union government earlier this month will not fix a single national level minimum wage for the whole country, but will vary across states and geographies so as to ensure that no State Government fixes the minimum wage below the national minimum wage, notified for that area by the Central Government. If the minimum wages fixed by the states are already higher than the ‘national minimum wage’, the states will not be allowed to lower their wage levels, according to the provisions of the Bill. Deciding factors According to the bill state governments will fix their minimum wages keeping in mind “the skill required, arduousness of the work assigned to the worker, the cost of living of the worker, geographical location of the place of work,” among other factors. At present, various states are free to fix their own level of minimum wages as per the local conditions, cost of living and other factors. Further the minimum wages so fixed by the Central government be applicable to all employments covering both organised and unorganised sector. With effect from July 1 this year, the Labour Ministry announced a hike in the National Floor Level Minimum Wage from ₹160 per day to ₹176 a day. Till April 1 this year, at least 11 States, including Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura and Tamil Nadu, had fixed their minimum wage level below the National Floor Level Minimum Wage of ₹160 recommended by the Central government as on that date. About Wages Bill:- The Code on Wages Bill combines four labour laws — Payment of Wages Act, 1936, Minimum Wages Act, 1948, Payment of Bonus Act, 1965 and Equal Remuneratiom Act, 1976. The present law, Minimum Wages Act of 1948, applies to employees working in 45 scheduled employments. At present, the Centre has fixes a National Floor Level Minimum Wage – a non-statutory measure to ensure that states fix their minimum wages beyond this floor level. Thus the minimum wages set by the Centre will become statutory.

KAU identifies 12 natural dyes for textiles

Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) has identified 12 indigenous plants for manufacturing natural textile dyes capable of giving colour to cotton and silk textiles. This will provide an organic option for dyeing. The technology for using these plants for commercial textile industry has been standardised under another research project sponsored by the RKVY (Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana). Eco-friendly The technology will be of great value in the development of eco-friendly and safe clothing, especially for newborns and people allergic to synthetic dyes. Plant dyes were used for garment dyeing and wall paintings till the advent of synthetic dyes in the 16th century.

NADA’s new initiative to increase awareness about drugs

The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) to increase athletes’ awareness about drugs. This memorandum is essentially meant to provide a convenient option for Indian athletes to know whether any drug sold in the Indian market contains any prohibited substance as per the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Code. Typing the brand name of any medicine in the website or app will indicate whether that medicine or drug is prohibited or not as per the anti-doping code.
