Just curious since you post some japanese music related stuff recently... how was your progression music wise? Did you get into jpop because of anime and stuff like so many and naturally migrated to kpop in later years? Do you still listen to japanese music and what are some of your favourits? So far I value your impaccable taste!

hi anon, you got it right! i grew up watching anime, got into jpop and jrock, then discovered kpop thanks to my friends and boa who's still my favourite singer 💓 i admit i don't follow jpop the same way as i used to, i'm not very familiar with newer popular artists but i listen a lot of my old faves. it's probably not gonna surprise you that i've always liked idols, especially from h!p (and also johnny's), later akb48 and their sister groups. i also love ggs like perfume or zone and sooooo many soloists. utada hikaru and nakashima mika will always be my most beloved ones but i also listen to otsuka ai, amuro namie, hoshino gen, hirai ken, yaida hitomi, mukai taichi, shibasaki kou, sheena ringo, miliyah... as for more groups, from the top of my head i could name paris match, yuzu, moumoon, monkey majik, bennie k, foxxi misq, capsule... sorry for listing so many but i could seriously go on and on and on... 😅 i'm sure you know how it is lol!

lately i've been in the mood for endlicheri*endlicheri, some of his stuff is great for emo days 🫠

Beach episode? Beach episode. Sorta.

Summer episodes in Precure are kind of notorious for being largely inconsequential and filler-y. Nothing super duper important usually happens between the mid-season climax and the final merch push at the start of the fourth quarter, and this is no exception. That’s not to say that nothing of value happens, as Miss Shitataare lets slip that Michiru and Kaoru are still alive, and we learn about Moop and Foop’s connection to them, but it’s nothing groundbreaking. To that end, I’m going to keep this review short, especially since I’m about 2 weeks late in writing about it and I have a goal of finishing Splash Star this month.

Saki, Mai, Yuuko, and Hitomi have been drafted to help out at the Hoshinos’ summer beach shop, selling shaved ice and yakisoba. Yuuko is overly eager to help, which slightly unnerves Kenta and his parents. Business is going well until they run into competition from a neighboring booth, Mizushita’s.

Yes, it’s Miss Shitataare in disguise, and none of the cures or their fairies recognize her. She’s selling shaved ice using water from the Fountain of Water, and outsells the Honshinos’ booth. There’s a lot of good comedy bits that result from this. Moop and Foop eventually taste some of the shaved ice and reminisce about their time in the Fountain of Sky, especially a time when Michiru and Kaoru saved them from a falling tree (although they pretended not to notice or care), for which they are grateful. Wanting to learn more about this familiar ice, they go to investigate but she catches them and reveals herself to Saki and Mai before launching them into the air (before they can transform) to a more suitable location for her to fight them. The girls are able to transform in midair, saving their lives, but the Uzainaa that awaits them is very fast and tricky and wears them out. (check out this gif from the gallery for a demonstration) Unfortunately, when Miss S. lets slip that the Kiryuus are still alive, after talking shit about them to the girls, the Cures and all four fairies are united in heart and mind that they valued them, which allows Moop and Foop to enter the Splash Commune and unlock the Spiral Rings. This turns the tide of the fight, and Bloom and Egret are now re-energized and able to keep up with the Uzainaa, so they beat it up and defeat it with Spiral Heart Splash. The girls make it back to the shore where they and their friends enjoy a congratulatory meal for a hard day’s work. A stray remark from Saki that Yuuko should inherit the Hoshino’s stand irks Kenta (which is odd, because his defining character episode was all about how he didn’t want to inherit the family business), and he chases her around the beach into a still frame.

The insight into Moop and Foop’s connection with the Kiryuu sisters is welcome, and it helps show that even before they met Saki and Mai, they had hints of goodness in them. They write their actions off to each other, but you can see the spark of who they would become, and that’s why the two young fairies have such a strong attachment for two girls they’ve never spoken to, which serves as the initial bonding point between them and the rest of the team. Comedy! As I said above there are a lot of gags in this episode. First of all, we get more of Saki’s inability to pronounce villain names, as she misnames Miss Shitataare as Hanamizu-taare, or Miss Snotty-nose-taare. Also, the entire battle between the Hoshinos’ restaurant and Mizushita is played for laughs, and I have a video of that as well:

They keep one-upping each other to absurd degrees and it’s peak silliness, especially for a villainess who can pose such a strong challenge to the cures, that she bothers to stoop to this level. There is literally no reason given for why she does this, stealing business from the cures’ friends doesn’t really hurt them in any tangible way. In a related gag, Gohyaan even shows up at the stand to ask her what she’s doing, and he is wonderfully terribly “disguised”.

So clearly she didn’t spell out her plan to Dark Fall, either. Also she keeps calling Gohyaan Goh-chan, which annoys him. Bad nicknames seem to be a trend.

Whenever anybody eats the shaved ice made from the Fountain of Water, they cry over how delicious it is but immediately wince with brain freeze because it was so good that they ate too much too fast.

Yet another gag is Yuuko’s overeagerness to help out Kenta’s parents at the stand, always popping up at the right time with ingredients that are running low but in a slightly unnerving way, and chiming in with things that sound like lines from ads at strange times. Whether it’s because she’s trying to impress her way into the family and win over Kenta or she’s just quirky (she’s never been shown this way before, either way) is uncertain.

A joke near the end of the episode has Bloom and Egret questioning how they’ll get back to shore from the ice platform they were battling on, which is never resolved but the very next shot they’re back at the beach in their normal clothes. It’s a weird issue to me because we established way back in episode 2 that they can launch themselves great distances by concentrating the power of the spirits in their feet, so at this point they should be experienced enough to not even need to question this scenario. Needless to say, this joke didn’t land well for me. (no pun intended)

On the animation front, this episode offers us some great muggy faces, but otherwise it’s nothing spectacular. There are a few off model sequences, the rest is passable but not noteworthy, no camera rotation or anything. (there was a great shot in the last episode I wanted to comment on, but oh well)

To summarize, this episode is heavy on jokes and characters acting out of character or just not living up to their potential, and light on plot. And yes, I understand that in a 50 episode series, not every episode can or should advance the narrative, some need to be more focused on interpersonal relationships and fleshing out the characters. It’s okay to just spend time in this world, letting the audience bond with the cast so that the high points, which test the characters, are that much more meaningful. Nonetheless, I’m also going to point out nonessential content when I come across it, and that’s what this episode is (barring Moop and Foop’s development). Fun, but largely inconsequential, with several aspects that just... are strange. Look forward to more of those as the summer filler progresses.
