reading update: july 2023

I don't have a cool and witty opening for this one. I read a fuck of a lot of books this month and I want to tell you about them LET'S GO

Black Water Sister (Zen Cho, 2021) - Black Water Sister has a very fun premise: a closeted lesbian and unemployed recent graduate moves back to Malaysia with her parents and is already having a bad enough time when she starts hearing the voice of her dead grandmother, who turns out to have been deeply involved in supernatural organized crime. our hapless protagonist becomes a medium against her will, and has to navigate to world of Malaysian spirits and superstition to lay her grandma to rest. unfortunately the actual style of the story wasn't more me; although definitely adult fiction, the prose is breezy in a way I affiliate strongly with YA, which is not to my personal taste but is still so hashtag valid. if you're one of the countless people trying to make that jump from YA to adult fiction and you like queer urban fantasy then Black Water Sister might be a great fit for you, although I should provide a warning for a pretty surprisingly graphic near-rape in the book's climax that really took me by surprise in a story that's otherwise pretty zany in its violence.

The Bride Test (Helen Hoang, 2019) - I think I said last month that Alexis Hall's A Lady for a Duke was the best so far of the romance-novel-every-month scheme I'm trying to pull off this year. the Bride Test has pretty swiftly displaced it; have I finally discovered the really good romance novels? (worry not; I know what I'm reading for August and my hopes are. low.) our two protagonists, Mỹ/Esme (her chosen American/English name) and Khai, are both genuinely charming and are pretty strong characters independent of each other, which cannot be said for A Lot of romance protags. despite the absolute insanity of how they met (yes, Khai's mother went to Vietnam and offered, uneducated a poor single mother a tourist visa in exchange for trying to seduce her autistic son. yes, that's shady. don't think about it too hard) and Esme waiting until WAY too late in the game to reveal the existence of HER LIVING HUMAN CHILD, I liked this book a lot. it's silly and heartfelt and I had fun; what else do you need? 5/5 eggplant emojis.

Giovanni's Room (James Baldwin, 1956) - there's probably nothing I can say about Giovanni's Room that I could say that someone smarter and gayer hasn't already said, but god. it really is breathtaking. I so often see this book talked about as a gay tragedy, and honestly that feels like almost too glib of a description. it's a really meticulous dissection of white male masculinity and the claustrophobic constraints there of, and our narrator's claustrophobic fear of divesting himself from the power that he's entitled to by virtue of being a white American man perceived as a heterosexual. this man would rather live in repressed misery for his entire life than risk being like those effeminate faggots at the gay club, but spoiler alert! being miserable doesn't make you better than your fellow fags; it just means you're miserable AND a fag. sharp and painful and so so so smart. also I'm going to summon @zaricats because I was supposed to tell you what I thought about this book. oops!

Lone Women (Victor LaValle, 2023) - okay so listen. did I just say Black Water Sister wasn't really for me because of the simplistic prose? yes. did I really enjoy the very sparse, straightforward style of Lone Women? also yes. leave me alone, I contain contradictions. anyway, Lone Women is a ripping piece of historical fiction spliced with supernatural secrets, based on LaValle's research into 19th century Black women homesteaders who made their lives in Montana. LaValle opens on a scene of irresistible intrigue - Adelaide Henry, lone woman, sets out for Montana with a mysteriously heavy trunk after burning down her family's California farm with her parents' mutilated corpses inside. and boy, does it escalate from there! it's a story about isolation and community and the people who are failed by so-called close knit small towns, and the ways in which vulnerable people band together to protect one another. it also makes the compelling point that maybe, just maybe, the real monsters were your local transphobe and her husband's lynch mob all along.

Black Disability Politics (Sami Schalk, 2022) - what a cool book! Schalk's argument begins with the idea that Black disability politics are distinct from predominantly white mainstream disability politics, and are therefore often overlooked in conversation, activism, and academia. Schalk analyzes the historical work of the Black Panthers and the National Black Women's Health Project to showcase what she describes as Black disability politics in action. in Schalk's conception, Black disability politics take a much more holistic approach to disability, conceptualizing as just one form (and, frequently, as a result of) of oppression tangled up with a myriad of others that cannot be meaningfully addressed when they're treated as separate issues. the book concludes in interviews with contemporary Black disability activists and organizers that shed light on ways in which the wider movement is often unwelcoming to folks of color, and an exhortation from Schalk for readers to continue the conversation well beyond the confines of the book. in a killer show of praxis, the entire book has been made available to read in PDF form, and I strongly recommend giving it a look!

The River of Silver (S.A. Chakraborty, 2022) - mentally I am kicking myself a little for waiting so long to read this continuation of my beloved Daevabad trilogy, because it did take me a minute to get back into the swing and mythology of the world and that did make me feel unpleasantly like I wasn't appreciating these character-focused short stories as much as I could be. but even having said that - man! fuck I love the world of Daevabad, and I adore these characters so much. getting to see them again, even briefly, was a delight, and I am once again congratulating Nahri and Ali on being the invention of heterosexual romance. (also, on a related note, but I ADORE the way Chakraborty writes her characters having crushes. they crush SO hard and it's very sweet. these books are such big drama all the way down.)

Men We Reaped (Jesmyn Ward, 2013) - an absolute powerhouse of a memoir, and devastating the whole way down. in Men We Reaped Ward attempts to make sense of a series of tragedies that befell her community when five young Black men - beginning with Ward's younger brother - died between 2000 and 2004. the word 'unflinching' is hopelessly played out, but it's difficult to figure out how to describe the head-on way Ward explores each young man's life and ultimate end and her own upbringing. the men in Ward's history - her brother, the friends she lost, her father and other male relatives - are never idealized; their demons, miseries, infidelities, addictions, and violence are placed on full display. but Ward is also insistent on displaying these men with dignity, compassion, empathy; showing them at their best and, most importantly, as men who were loved and deserved better than the violence that poverty and racism wrought on them. it's a furious memoir, one that will leave you mourning too.

Nimona (ND Stevenson, 2015) - did I only read this so I can make more informed complaints if/when I end up watching the netflix movie with my wife? YES. but listen, it wasn't JUST petty hater behavior. Nimona is just really good, and I think I got a lot more out of it this time around that I did when I first read it years ago. this comic is wild and unfettered and so spectacularly weird; I wish more things felt the way Nimona does. I also with more things starred small girls begging to kill cops and stage a violent overthrow of the government, that rules hard. also man I love Ballister, he's SUCH a good protagonist. he's curmudgeonly, he's deeply principled, he's held a grudge for years, he's paternal, he's even gay. what a guy!

Sời, khoải phải nói, cổ là quán quân “Trời sinh một cặp” năm 2019 đó. Oách chưa😏? Chưa kể thi thoảng cô còn collab với các nhạc sĩ, ca sĩ nữa.

Giọng hát của cổ rất chắc, khoẻ nhưng vẫn có sự uyển chuyển, bay bổng đó nhaa.

Tui thích nhất đoạn “Một mình trải lòng giữa chốn hoang sơ cỏ dại. Một mình ngồi buồn vu vơ…” của cổ trong tập cuối phim “Cuộc đời vẫn đẹp sao”😋.

Cô Đan Lê

Tui thường biết cô ấy là MC và diễn viên. Nhưng bữa nọ, một cách rất tình cờ, tui biết cổ từng là ca sĩ, tham gia nhóm nhạc và có album😳 siêu bất ngờ luôn ấy (nhưng cùng hôm đó, có một điều còn bất ngờ hơn, tui sẽ kể sau)

Tui chưa từng nghe giọng cô Lee hát nma nghe giọng nói hằng ngày của cô ấy, giọng nói của một MC thật sự rất nhẹ nhàng, dịu dàng nên tui đoán khi cô ấy hát, ắt hẳn sẽ rất ngọt ngào, yểu điệu.

Chị Emma

Ngày bé chị mắc bệnh tâm lí, dễ hoảng loạn, thường hay hét to nên giọng của chị bị khàn, sau này trở nên trầm hơn. Nhưng chính vì vậy chị ấy có một tông giọng rất riêng, trầm tạo nên sự sâu lắng nên dễ cuốn hút.

Mình từng nghe chị hát trong bộ phim “La La Land” hay qua vài video ngắn, chẳng hạn như là video chị ấy dùng một chiếc hộp gõ xuống mặt bàn đề tạo nên giai điệu và hát theo (mình kh rõ tên gọi của kiểu này). Mình tin là điều này có thể khẳng định, chị có năng khiếu về âm nhạc hay cảm nhạc🤭.

Từng là diễn viên top đầu trong các vở nhạc kịch, ngôi sao lấp lánh của đoàn kịch Takarazuka Rueve, đoạt kh ít giải thưởng về nhạc kịch, vậy đã đủ khẳng định tài năng nghệ thuật nói riêng và năng khiếu ca nhạc của cổ chưa😍?

Hôm bữa tui xem phim “Nàng công chúa ếch (2011)”, phim lấy đề tài là ca nhạc. Tui cực kì bất ngờ về khả năng ca hát của cổ. Hát bài vui tươi thì giọng khoẻ khoắn, năng động, hát bài mang nỗi niềm thì giọng sâu lắng, da diết. Cổ hát chay, kh có nhạc mà cũng hay nữa, trầm bổng đều đọ được hết😉.

Ps: 4 cô ai đồ đều hát hay nma đc cái fan của các cô hát ngang như cua, hát karaoke chuyên gia nuốt chữ, lời bài nọ lắp vào bài kia😌 nhưng ngta vẫn chẳng bảo là hát hay kh bằng hay hát hay sao?

gần 60% câu chuyện trong "Thế giới xấu xí" được viết trong giai đoạn 2019-2021. Và khi đọc lại, em thấy mình như kẻ mất trí. Lúc đó, em viết bất cần, hoang dại thế sao? Anh từng yêu một tác giả xốc nổi, hoang dại thế à?

em biết, "Thế giới xấu xí" chưa "đã" với anh. Vẫn còn những đè nén trong đó. Vẫn còn nhiều lỗi vụng kỹ thuật. Vẫn còn vài câu chuyện hiền quá, chẳng quậy giống em.

Chưa kịp đếm đã lại 4 năm. Và 2019 là câu chuyện của 5 năm về trước. 

#tatcalataicovid làm cho 2020-2021-2022 toang hoang. Giờ mà nhắc đến cách ly, F0, phong tỏa, test,… là rùng mình liền. Trải qua một cuộc bể dâu, còn lại trên người là 4 mũi vắc xin và 1 lần 2 vạch đậm kè. Bất tử cho đến khi tàn cuộc thì dính =))) 

Đến nay xa ba và má em xa nhà cũng đã 5 năm. Elm Út về được một lần, còn Chirawat của elm chưa về luôn. Cũng từng đó thời gian elm sống một mình. Ăn cái Tết một mình thành quen.

Năm 2022 Ngoại mất khi 100 tuổi, em họ mất khi mới 17 tuổi :(( Chuyện buồn mãi mỗi khi nhắc lại.

33 tuổi, 02 Gmail, 02 Facebook, 01 Twitter X, 01 Instagram, 01 Tumblr, 01 Wordpress, 01 Tiktok. Chắc phải chuyển cái Wordpress qua chứ đóng bụi rồi.

Cuộc sống hằng ngày vẫn như bài viết 4 năm trước :)) Đi làm, chiều về nằm sạc pin cơ thể, ăn cơm, tào lao rồi ngủ. Lâu lâu đi chơi, đôi khi cày phim. Elm không đọc đc cuốn sách nào ra hồn. Elm xin lỗi. 

Vẫn làm ở công ty cũ, 10 năm một công việc. Đôi lúc rất chán nhưng thay đổi cũng rất lười. Bây giờ vẫn nghĩ là công ty không phụ mình thì mình nghĩ mình có thể làm ở đó hoài :))

Niềng răng 5 năm rồi chưa được tháo. Cay =)) Bác bảo tháng 6 năm nay nha, okay, elm chờ :((

Elm vẫn ăn hại và vô tích sự. Vẫn chưa học tiếng Anh :((

Yoga học được 3 tháng mùa dịch và từ đó là lười vận động :((

Elm bị đau dạ dày rồi. Từ ngày mở bán vé D-Day Tour là đau âm ỉ cho đến nay vẫn không đỡ.

Idol elm thích năm 19 tuổi đã cưới vợ sinh con. Bé sinh cùng tháng với elm và nay hơn 1 tuổi, chắc là biết đi và đang tập nói bi bô rồi. Con đường thầy đi là con đường hoàn mỹ. Perfect :))

Idol elm thích năm 26 tuổi đi lính hết rồi. Luyến tiếc nhất vẫn là D-Day Tour của bía, nhắc đến là elm lại suy. 2025 cho elm xin cái Tour và cái vé. Elm cám ơn rất nhiều.

Cuối năm 2020 elm chính thức bị té, rơi vào bẫy của anh F và 4 con báo. Elm chỉ thắc mắc sao có đứa da trắng ngang ngửa MYG và tay to hơn thv thôi mà. Sao giờ elm dính luôn rồi. Đội tuyển tôi yêu, tôi chửi, tôi vui, tôi sầu, tôi suy và tôi cút đi mua áo Jersey có chất lượng bình thường nhưng giá x 10 lần hàng pha kè trên sàn S cam lè giấu tên.

2022 Elm đã mua xe ô tô, đến nay vẫn còn nợ má 70%. Biết bao giờ trả hết =)) Có xe che nắng che mưa, đi chơi rất tiện nhưng rất đau ví. Cực kì xót tiền, ngang ngửa một chân biêu tiết kiệm.

2022 tiger đến với cuộc sống của elm. Đồ lắm lông và bị đáng iuuuuuuu.

Đã upgrade điện thoại lên số 13 nhưng gần đây mê zflip.

Đã đứng tên bđs nhưng không có cái nào là của mình.

Có thể một năm đi Thái 2 lần với “bạn xã hội”, vô tình lạc vô concert của G4 và cố tình đi concert của chú Jaychou =)) Đây là biểu hiện của sự chán nên có người rủ là sẽ đi =))

à ờ, elm vẫn độc thân. Phải quánh đờ phùn lắm mới một mình lâu được như elm. Haha. Hai mẹ con elm cự lộn cũng vì đây mà ra.

4 năm rồi elm vẫn không được sống trong mối quan tâm giống những người bạn đồng niên của mình. Nhưng ngày Tết elm vẫn ngược xuôi Nội-Ngoại-Nhà còn hơn làm dâu :)) Phần lớn bạn bè, chị em, thậm chí là cháu của elm cũng đã con cái đùm đề, gia đình, sự nghiệp ổn định hết rồi. 

và, 4 năm trước em đoán em bây giờ không sai một xí nào =))) em đã xin visa này nọ, chạy đua khắp trang web bán vé concert, tìm khách sạn, vé máy bay đi chơi, ban ngày đi làm, tối ăn cơm rồi lướt tiktok, thử đủ loại đồ uống, xiên bửn, hóng hót, capcut giựt giựt, xem video rồi đi ngủ =)) Cuộc sống vô tree =)))

Elm cầu mong được mạnh giỏi và vui vẻ mỗi ngày. 4 năm sau chắc elm cũng sẽ như bây giờ, bình an, đi làm và đi đó đi đây =))

Elm vẫn tin vào tình yêu nhưng elm không chắc em có phúc phần đó không :)) độ tuổi như elm cũng đã nghĩ tới ivf rồi :v Thần số học cho elm cơ hội vào năm 2024 hoặc 2028. Cùng chờ xem :))

Elm hy vọng elm sẽ luôn enjoy rất nhiều cái moment đẹp.

Eve Risser Red Desert Orchestra - Eurythmia - Mali-inspired jazz with 4-5 percussionists, a real treat (Clean Feed)

Led by the French pianist Eve Risser, the Red Desert Orchestra is a hybrid formation in which musicians from Europe and Africa rub shoulders in the service of music resolutely haunting, magnifying the polyrhythmic intertwining to the point of vertigo through a writing as demanding in its form as resolute in its ambitions. Stakeholder of ten different configurations, from solo to large ensemble, Eve Risser develops in this context her talents as a composer by adding the sounds of balafons to her orchestra, djembes and bara, from West Africa. Lines and sounds weave in tireless hypnotic loops that lead the listener to a spiritual and nomadic experience, from which brilliant soloists emerge. In Eve’s own words: “this Orchestra took over from the White Desert Orchestra. My current influences were Mali, my work with the Kaladjula Band and Nainy Diabaté.

It is a work with people and with the body: the search for soft trance for Eurythmia and dance for Kogoba Basigui, the two programs that we carry with this orchestra. SOYYAYA is an arrangement of the piece “Après Un Rêve” (Clean Feed, 2019) out of a prepared romantic-mechanical solo piano original piece. This is kind of where I've been for a while. Between dance, trance, techno, West African music (and so many others!) and romanticism, expressionism. For the other songs I came with ideas orally and we have them all arranged together. GÄMSE is a piece completely written by me as well. We play it in the other Kogoba program as well.

We work orally because not everyone reads music and especially wanting to avoid “efficiency” of writing and getting into a slow process. Treat yourself to the luxury of the "long term". See how the music can anchor itself in us and dress the group to the skin and with the time that pass. Slow process = rare these days I find, but humanly very very strong! It's really worth it!

In relation to the work that we carried out to create this orchestra and this repertoire, I evoke willingly the image of weaving: at the beginning the weaving was thicker, as if we had had big needles and big yarns and little by little, it became fine lace, with wide variety of colors. When we work orally, we start with large blocks, to remember music easily, before refining with smaller needles and thread. If we do not see for a long time, the colors may be more intense (because everyone will be going back to his or her home and will have nurtured his musical individualy) but the needles and wool will be larger again. Thật sự hôm nọ gặp lại bạn, mình vẫn thấy lâng lâng vô cùng. Mình cũng không nghĩ là cuối cùng sau 5 năm trời, từ năm 2019, cũng lại có thể mặt đối mặt, nhìn thấy bạn ở khoảng cách gần như thế. Dù ánh mắt bạn lạnh băng à, còn mình lúc đó nghe điện thoại, mình sợ bạn không nhận ra mình, không còn biết mình là ai nữa. Khoảnh khắc ấy chắc cx chỉ vài giây, mà qua cơn bão, mình vẫn nhớ, nhớ về bạn rất nhiều. Không biết bạn đến đấy làm gì, nhưng thật sự, khi được gọi sang, mình đã chạy rất vội vàng dù không thật sự biết m có thể gặp bạn rồi nói được câu gì không, dù sợ mọi ng sẽ trêu và bạn phát hiện ra tình cảm của mình. Nhưng lúc đó m đã chạy bằng cả tấm lòng, và thấy nhẹ nhõm khi thấy bạn rời đi rồi. Sâu thẳm mình cảm thấy thế. Mình k thấy buồn vì giữa chúng ta không coa gì thêm, mà chỉ cảm thấy thật kì diệu, dù tất cả chỉ là khoảnh khắc ngắn ngủi.

Không biết lúc ấy cậu đã nghĩ gì, tớ thì vỡ oà lắm, vì sau từng ấy thời gian cũng đã được thấy cậu ở khoảng cách gần như thế, vẫn nghe thấy giọng cậu, và cậu không khác một chút gì cả, chỉ là da có đỏ hơn một chút và ánh mắt thì lạnh lùng nhìn tớ thôi.

Đêm hôm bão tớ đã mơ về cậu, tớ mơ rằng khi tớ đang nhắc đến cậu với mọi người, thì cậu xuất hiện ngay ở đằng sau và mình đã chữa cháy là đó là a Đ, và bạn đã hỏi mình là: “Anh Đ là người hay làm cậu rung động à”. Mình đã chạy đi hay sao đó.

Cũng lâu rồi mình không mơ tới cậu, cũng hiểu tất cả hoang đường của bản thân, rồi nghĩ tới việc bao nhiêu chuyện đã xảy ra, vật đổi sao dời, vậy mà khi gặp lại cậu vẫn bâng khuâng suy nghĩ.

2 năm trước tớ đã giận cậu, vì xoá tất cả thông tin instagram đi, hoặc ẩn tớ đi, và đã bảo vs chính mình rằng hãy không bao giờ gặp lại nhau nữa, hãy quên đi người này, hãy để họ là một lí do mình phải quên nhưng thậm chí không nhớ tại sao m p quên nữa, thế mà cuối cùng 2 năm sau vẫn gặp lại. Nhưng tớ cũng biết rằng, cũng chẳng để làm gì đâu, nếu như một lời chào cũng không thể cất lên.

Two new Hai Phong container terminals to become operational in 2025

Work is being speeded up on container terminals No. 3 and No. 4 of the Hai Phong international gateway port in order to make them operational in 2025.

The terminals’ project investor, Port of Hai Phong JSC (Hai Phong Port), says it will mobilize all resources to complete at least 55% of the terminals’ engineering and construction (EC) package in the second half of the year.

Located in the Lach Huyen deep-water port area, the project had its investment plan approved by the Prime Minister in October 2019, with Hai Phong Port as investor.

Its stated objective is to build container terminals No. 3 and No. 4 at the Lach Huyen terminal area to match the progress of other projects to build and develop the city’s socio-economic infrastructure, serving a step-by-step relocation of the Hoang Dieu terminal area.
