On this day, 21 July 1936 one of the most iconic photos of the Spanish civil war was taken on the rooftop terrace of what is now the Iberostar/Apple store buildings in Barcelona. Taken by German photographer Hans Gutmann, the photo depicts 17-year-old socialist, Marina Ginestà. Although she is captured holding a rifle, it is doubtful that Ginestà actually fought on the front lines during the war. Instead, as she was partially brought up in France and spoke fluent French, Catalan and Spanish she worked as a journalist during the war and more notably as a translator and interpreter for the Soviet correspondent form the Pravda newspaper, Mijaíl Koltsov. Gutmann had come to Barcelona to cover the anti-fascist Popular Olympiad games and at the onset of the war decided to stay to cover the conflict. He then castilized his name to Juan Guzmán. A communist himself, he had easy access to what was formerly the Hotel Colón, a building taken over by the PSUC (the Catalan Socialist Unification Party) where he took many of his renowned photos. When the photo was taken of young Ginestà she never had held a rifle in her hands - Guzmán offered it to her to pose with and the same rifle appears in another photo in the same hotel of the writer Ludwig Renn. Ginestà survived the war and fled to France as a refugee. She later escaped the Second World War by fleeing to the Dominican Republic. With the rise of the dictatorship under Trujillo Ginestà moved to Venezuela where she settled for many years working as a journalist and a novelist. In 2014 she passed away in Paris, France aged 94. Buenos Aires, 03.01.24

Tumblr media Tumblr media
marina ginesta, by juan guzman, 1936 The famous photograph was taken on 21 July 1936. It shows the 17-year-old Ginestà wearing an army uniform and posing with a rifle on the top of the original Hotel Colón, Plaça de Catalunya 9. The picture was taken during the 1936 military uprising in Barcelona. Marina stated about the picture: "It’s a good photo. It reflects the feeling we had at that moment. Socialism had arrived, the hotel guests had left. There was euphoria. We retired in Columbus, we ate well, as if bourgeois life belonged to us and we would have changed category quickly.

Posted @withregram • @redfishstream This iconic picture of an anti-fascist resistance fighter in Spain was taken 84 years ago today.
The picture is of Marina Ginestà during the Spanish Civil War in 1936, just 4 days after the military uprising of fascist general Francisco Franco against the socialist Spanish Second Republic.
The picture was taken by photojournalist Juan Guzmán on the roof of the Hotel Colón at the Plaça de Catalunya in Barcelona and became a symbol of the participation of women in the resistance against fascism.
Ginestà was born in Toulouse to Spanish immigrant parents. When she was 11, the family moved back to Barcelona. Both of her parents were active trade unionists. She joined the Unified Socialist Party of Catalonia in the early 1930s.
As a young leftist, Ginestà remembered moving into the Hotel Colón, which became a base of operations for socialist and communist youth organizations in Barcelona. She worked as a translator for Pravda.
Like the majority of Republicans and left-wing sympathizers, Ginestà was forced into exile. She first went to France, and then to Latin America, where she settled for a time in the Dominican Republic.
For much of her life, Ginestà was unaware of the photo’s existence. It wasn’t until 2006 that she found out about the photo of herself.
Ginestà passed away in January of 2014.
