Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace 如懿传 (2018)

Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace (Chinese: 如懿传; pinyin: Rúyì Zhuàn) is a 2018 Chinese television series based on novel Hou Gong Ru Yi Zhuan by Liu Lianzi. Starring Zhou Xun and Wallace Huo, the series chronicles the marriage of Qianlong Emperor and Ula-Nara, the Step Empress. It is the sequel to the critically acclaimed drama Empresses in the Palace. (copy and pasted from Wikipedia) Interestingly, the costume designers are Chen Tongxun and Zhang Shuping, both of whom specialize in republican era costumes and not period ones.

Much like Story of Yanxi Palace which aired shortly before it, Ruyi is set in the Qianlong era (1735-96). And just like Yanxi Palace, it didn't 100% land in the 18th century either. It's obvious that some attempts at historical accuracy have been made and the costumes are not entirely guzhuang, though the extras more often than not are wearing standard guzhuang Manchu costumes----this is where Yanxi outshines Ruyi in terms of accuracy.

I think a very bizarre aspect of the costuming in Ruyi is that while the female protagonist sports some looks that are very legit, very accurate to the mid 18th century, the extras look like they live in a time setting where the Eight Nation Alliance was gonna come barging into Beijing to quell the Boxer Rebellion any minute (something that happened in 1899-1901). Without further ado, let’s get into it. All the screenshots are from the Youtube uploads.

Here Ruyi is seen in a very historically accurate hairstyle most Qing period dramas wouldn’t recreate: braided hair. Manchu women originally wore their hair braided, and it wasn’t until the mid 18th century when braiding evolved into 钿子 dianzi and later 两把头 liangbatou that it fell out of favor. Though they probably used hair extensions here which look kind of fake? Theoretically all the hair should be up in braids so there shouldn’t be loose hair/braids dangling at the back.

Hongli looks very 19th century, I feel very sorry for him. So Ruyi has this side parted fringe which shouldn’t be a thing; as you can see in the previous portrait, her hair should be middle parted and pulled back. The 坎肩 kanjian vest she’s wearing screams 19th century and I’m not particularly fond of it. A notable accessory here is the white kerchief. In 18th century export paintings, you could often see Manchu women wearing a long white scarf/kerchief that’s either draped around the neck or attached to a 璎珞 yingluo necklace or the button at their lapel. The stiff, white strip of fabric you see in most Qing dramas was the 19th century form of the kerchief, which became standardized. In the 18th century, there were still a variety of ways to wear the kerchief.

These just look like average guzhuang costumes inspired by late 19th century Manchu clothing, not appropriate for the time period at all.

They even used the over the top 大拉翅 dalachi headpiece with the 燕尾 yanwei (swallow tail) at the back of her head, this for real looks more 1940s than 1740s.

You can obviously see that Ruyi is the main character because she’s always the only one in historically accurate costumes ahaha. She’s probably wearing a 衬衣 chenyi, which looks pretty good besides the side slit which shouldn’t be there. She wears the 马蹄袖 matixiu or horse hoof cuff folded which... I guess was socially acceptable? She wears a plain dianzi on her head, though the side parted fringe is still bugging me. The other ladies are just guzhuang realness and not particularly historical.

Ok nevermind. Upon closer inspection there are a couple problems with this look: 1) The dianzi is not really a dianzi or the braided hair covered by a turban hairstyle I mentioned in my review for Yanxi Palace, but rather something akin to the 19th century liangbatou, just in the shape of a dianzi. The diagonal direction of the hair very much resembles 19th century 两把头 liangbatou. 2) There is a braided swallow tail at the back which shouldn’t be there. 3) The thin black binding would usually just be around the neck and not extend down to the lapel. 4) The collar shape doesn’t look quite right; in the 18th century, Manchu women’s standing collars for casual dress resembled those worn by Han women, which were soft, unstiffened, tall, closed by two buttons and had rectangular edges. I know this is very nitpicky and overall this look is still pretty ok.

For once Hongli actually has a valid reason to wear the 礼服 lifu ensemble, to his own coronation, though they gave him a fake standing collar for no good reason. Btw I refer to Qianlong as “Hongli” as a form of endearment because I feel like I’ve seen so much of him that he’s familiar already. Also it makes me feel powerful because in the 18th century no Chinese person could refer to the emperor by his real name in public so :3

Portrait of Hongli in lifu without a standing collar. I believe the fur trim and hat are seasonal? In summer he would wear lifu with the hat as shown in Ruyi and a robe without fur trim.

I think that’s all there is to say about this drama, Ruyi is still serving semi historically accurate 18th century looks and everybody else is from somewhere within 1850-1950. I have to say that the costumes here are not as well made as the ones in Yanxi Palace, which took the effort to make the extras look like they’re from the same universe as the protagonist. I appreciate the attempt at historical accuracy and the couple niche items shown (e.g. braided hair, soft kerchief, plain chenyi), but overall the design is a bit messy and all over the place, so I’d rate it a 4/10.

"Tian Fu zhi Guo" means ‘ The land of abundance’, which refers to the Chengdu Plain in Sichuan Province, where giant pandas live. In the early years ,the flood and drought disasters in the Chengdu Plain were frequent, and its prosperity benefited from a hydraulician named Li Bing, who construced Dujiangyan two thousand years ago . Dujiangyan eliminated the floods,irrigated the Chengdu Plain and made it become the land of abundance .

‘天府之国’的意思是富庶之地，它是指四川省成都平原，这里也是大熊猫的故乡。最初的成都平原水旱灾害频繁，它的繁荣得益于一个叫李冰的水利专家，他在两千年前修建的都江堰解除了水灾，灌溉了农田，奠定了‘天府之国’的地理基础。

About 2200 years ago, the Minjiang River flooded almost every year

Hong zai zhi hou ,you chang chang chu xian gan han

洪灾之后，又常常出现干旱

Floods was often followed by frequent droughts

Ren men sheng cun kun nan ,liu li shi suo

人们生存困难,流离失所

People were difficult to survive and lost their homes

Gong yuan qian er bai wu shi liu nian ,shui li zhuan jiaLi bing dan ren shu guo jun shou

公元前256年，水利专家李冰担任蜀国郡守

In 256 BC, Li Bing，a hydraulician，served as the stadholder of Shu ’Si Chuan’ State

Minjiang River was blocked by Yulei mountain, had to flow south

Due to the high mountain area, the Minjiang River can not meet the irrigation demand

可是堤坝很容易被湍急的岷江冲走

But the dam was easily washed away by the swift Minjiang River

Li Bing was inspired by women washing clothes by the river

Dang fang ru shi tou dao xi yi kuang shi

当放入石头到洗衣筐时

When put stones into the laundry basket

He shui cong xi yi kuang de feng xi zhong liu guo

河水从洗衣筐的缝隙中流过

The river flowed through the crevices of the laundry basket

Xi yi kuang que bu hui bei he shui chong zou

而洗衣筐却不会被河水冲走

And the laundry basket won't be washed away

Tong yang de ,ru guo yong zhu long zhuang shang e luan shi tou ru jiang zhong

同样的，如果用竹笼装上鹅卵石投入江中

Similarly, if put pebbles in bamboo cages and throw into river

Jiang shui cong zhu long he e luan shi de feng xi zhong liu zou

江水从竹笼和鹅卵石的缝隙中流走

The river flows through the crevices of bamboo cages and pebbles

Dang jiang shui de chong ji li bian xiao hen duo

当江水的冲击力变小很多

When the impact force of the river becomes much smaller

Di ba jiu neng xiu zhu qi lai

堤坝就能修筑起来

The dam can be built

Li Bing dai ling bai xing yong zhe ge fang fa xiu jian di ba

李冰带领百姓用这个方法修建堤坝

Li Bing led the people to build dams in this way

Ti gao shui wei bing jiang Min jiang fen wei nei jiang he wai jiang

提高水位并将岷江分为内江和外江

Raised the water level and divided the Min jiang river into inside and outside rivers

Ji jian shao le yu ji shi jiang shui dui di an de chong ji

既减少了雨季时暴涨的江水对堤岸的冲击

It reduced the river’ impact force to the banks in wet-season

You yin nei jiang shui guan gai le gan han de nong tian

又引内江水灌溉了干旱的农田

And pumped inside river water into dry fields

Ke shi wen ti you lai le

可是问题又来了

But there was another problem

Nei jiang he dao xia zhai ,hen rong yi bei yu ji de ni sha du se

内江河道狭窄,很容易被淤积的泥沙堵塞

The inside River is narrow and easily blocked by silt

Li Bing you she ji le si xing de fei sha yan

李冰又设计了S型的飞沙堰

And Li Bing designed S-shaped desilting Weir

Li yong shui liu de chong ji jiang ni sha pai ru wai jiang

利用水流的冲击将泥沙排入外江

Using the impact of water flow to drain silt into the outer river

Shi gan jing de shui liu ru nei jiang

使干净的水流入内江

To lead the clean water to inside river

Li Bing you rang ren zai jiang di fang ru you ke du de shi xiang

李冰又让人在江底放入标有刻度的石像

Li Bing asked to put graduated stone statues at the river bottom

Dang he di ni sha da dao shi xiang jing jie xian shi

当河底泥沙达到石像警戒线时

When river silt reach the warning line of the status

便对泥沙进行清理

To clean up the silt

Drama China Terbaru Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace dikenal juga dengan judul lain “Inner Palace: Legend of Ruyi“. Drama ini didasarkan pada novel berjudul “Hou Gong Ru Yi Zhuan” oleh penulis Liu Lianzi yang memiliki judul asli 后宫 · 如懿传 .Novel aslinya ditulis sebagai sekuel dari Empresses in the Palace. Dalam Consort kekaisaran digunakan untuk mengikuti hierarki atau pangkat penting: Permaisuri, Huang Guifei, Guifei, Fei, Pin, Guiren, Changzai, Daying, Guan Nvzi.
