#House Baskar

WIP Wednesday
So I did Camp NaNoWriMo last month and worked on my "book" for the Foods of Thedas. I've collected all the recipes mentioned through out the series and am attempting to create a collection of blurbs describing the dishes as well as a couple functional recipes. This will all be done in the voice of my lovely Anjou Baskar, a dwarf who roams around Thedas collecting recipes and experiencing food.
I made my writing goal, and am polishing some of the recipes and blurbs I have. Honestly for July's Camp NaNoWriMo, I think I will focus on some original/headcanon recipes inspired by historical recipes I've collected between the 5th and 13th.
So little wip blurb from the start of the collection
If it wasn’t clear when you picked this up, you should know this isn’t your average collection of cookery. This isn’t some Orlesian compendium where I disdain about ingredients used by other nations or cultures. Nor is this a tome your mentor likely kept about because the Lady of the house or young lords and ladies had a particular sense of taste that either limited or omitted so many wonderful flavors. This is an exploration of flavor, from Ferelden to the Anderfels to Rivain. It spans across the ages and references the memory and spirit of flavors long since lost. So, to make sure anyone can use this tome, I wanted to explain some common ingredients used through out these recipes. Regional or ancient ingredients used across Thedas that are easily replicated or near impossible. I wish to tell you where you can get these, and if you cannot get them, what you could substitute them with. This won’t be exhaustive, and if an ingredient is specific to one recipe I will make note of such things there. I can’t promise that you will be able to craft the flavors, or even be able to honor the spirit and memory of the intended foods. Not at first anyways. One thing I can promise you, is that you and yours will have a full belly and a tale to tell your friends. -Anjou Baskar

the first one night stand prompt with Baskar ??
Since this requires a larger group, how bout I include Toothpricks 😀
There was enough history in that room to fill a museum. And enough tension to stifle anyone around them. The former Ska band, Toothpricks, were normally at each other's throats, but age had mellowed them out. Couldn't be bothered to ramp up to their former stage personas, but under the right circumstances, their rowdy behavior could be rekindled. Introducing a new face to the group was that kind of spark to get them talking.
"Everyone, this is Kari," said Bastian, "she's my...uh...friend. From Mordhaus."
Kari smiled and waved, "Hallo!" She looked at Bastian, silent confirmation that she was doing well in a new social setting. He nodded gently and guided her to a spot at the table. Strategic in his placement so she wouldn't get harassed too much. Jolene and Freddi were the best options.
"Well hi there, sweetheart," Jolene greeted, "you got some funky style goin' on there."
"Oh! T'ank yous."
"Yeah, whaddya even call this?" Freddi asked.
"Umm..Is dons’t know? Dis ams what I usually wear." Kari did stand out among the bright colors of the group with her modest long sleeve dress and head scarf. While she was working on her fashion line, she neglected to update herself to reflect the new look. The girls continued to chitter among themselves while the boys grilled Bastian about his new life with Dethklok Incorporated.
"Your friend is a doll, mate," Ryland commented, "you hittin' that?"
"N-no," Bastian stammered, "we're both far too busy with our projects."
"You said the same thing to me back in the day," Tomas mentioned.
"It was true then and it's quite true now. This is a whole different animal."
"Oi mate, you keep this up and you'll drop dead and alone in the studio. I can't take yeh ashes. Me Nan and Ma take up real estate on the mantle."
"Dummkopf! I'm not being cremated and I am certainly not ending up in your house."
"Well, have you thought about dating again?" Tomas asked, leaning toward Bastian. "Maybe your forever person is closer than you think. Just don' see it."
"Yeah! Like yer new lass. Why not give'er a go?"
Bastian took a sip of his hard seltzer and brushed off the comments. His former band mates were free to suggest people all night, but none of them knew Kari was sitting across from him with no panties on. Those were still drying in his pocket. They didn't need to know that it took one flick of his wrist to signal her to the back of the bar. One roll up of her skirt, one bent over angle and he would own her right there. He never thought he'd turn into such an exhibitionist, but she made him feel young again. She made him feel alive. And he wanted to savor the private feelings for as long as he could. So they suggested everyone they knew, but Bastian had his mind made up.
Prompt #1 from here

Cheated, the depositors lodged a complaint following which the EOW registered a case under several sections of IPC including 420 (cheating and sections of the Banning of I-Jnregulated Deposit Schemes (BUDS) act and sections of the Tamil Nadu Protection of Interests of Depositors (TN PID) act.

An Inciting Incident

Second Tom’s petty thug did the traditional thing, a backhand across the face to rouse from sleep and disorient, a few threats of harm and dire insinuations for a lady who was reduced to her bedclothes and tied to a chair, a very standard welcome to the first worst night of your life.
I would rate it a solid 4 on the menace scale, not just because they did a poor job, the ropes had cut into my skin and left me bleeding which was a terrible move, but because I knew Second Tom was the only one who’d pull this kind of shit and it was otherwise a very acceptable level of threat.
Now admittedly, I was in actual tangible danger if they were going to actually do something to me, but if it were First Tom, well he wasn’t the type to do the whole song and dance. He would have started with doing something he knew had at least a chance of working, like maybe detonating the building, or at least setting me on fire. Something that’d put even a half blood like me on the back foot.
Thing was, I hadn’t actually done anything to warrant that level of hell being rained down on me in this town since I had made peace with First Tom some months back. So either Second Tom had offed First, which seemed unlikely given he was a wimp, or something had happened and he was desperate and had to square things up.
“Glad to see you awake Red.”
“Second Tom.”
“First now actually,” he said, grimacing.
Oh that was bad. Something had gone fuckways.
“My…Condolences?”
“Appreciated. I’d apologize for the trussing up, but things have gotten bad.”
“Bad enough to turn on old friends?”
“Bad enough to put the screws to people who had deals at least. And unfortunately with Tom Dead, we need a new accord.”
“Do we though? I won that money fair and square.”
He stared at me with tired disbelief, but I wasn’t budging on this one. It’s not cheating if you don’t get caught first and foremost, but more critically I hadn’t even won that much money by casino standards.
“Sure ya did. Total 99.6 Million gella-“
“99.8”
“Really?”
“Guy wagered a house down south,” I said, to which he replied with an appreciative whistle.
“Beachside?”
“Nah, one of those scenic plains deals apparently.”
“Ah, haven’t visited. Well, 99.6 Million in Gella, and a miscellaneous 200 thou in other winnings says you should owe us a big deal, but-“ he paused.
“Buuuuuut?”
“If you track down the current cause of my woes I’ll wipe the board clean. Far as it goes, you and me are even. Completely. Won’t appreciate you running around town, but I won’t have to waste kneebreakers making a point.”
That…Was a pretty good deal actually. Dead Tom Merely had it that I wasn’t gonna get hunted down by goons so long as I stayed out of town or at least on the periphery, but a whole slate clearing? Just to chase down one measely…Measely…???
Actually hold on, this probably is a shit deal.
“Now far be it from me to negotiate Tom, but I don’t know anything about your current problem? I gather First Tom, may the guardians guide him to his fateful rest, is pretty dead, but what even happened?”
Second Tom Grimaced.
“Right. So you know his collection?”
“The Baskar Relics and Artifacts and all that. The ones they’ve been trying extremely hard to get back from him?”
“The very same. So, some chick walks into his office, past the guards entirely, and demands one upfront. Now Tom entertained the brat for a bit, and when he refused she took out what turned out to be a blade type arm and just straight up cut his head off before taking the arm and leaving.”
Oh.
Fuck.
“And you think I can take on some hired killer?”
“Maybe? You’re a tough chick, I’m sure you could figure something out. And if you don’t, I’m gonna dunk you in a tub of molten iron and see if you’ll survive even that.”
Oh, he had gotten better, that was a pretty solid threat given I could hear the steel works up above. Not enough, but he had gotten better since I last saw him.
“You know Tom, you’ve set surprisingly fair terms here.”
“I Like to think so.”
“So now let me give you a counter offer” I said, as the ropes binding me fell limp to the ground and thin blade of blood found it’s way to my finger tip, “I do this for you, you throw in one of those year long vip passes on the Fengalon, and I don’t carve a bloody swathe through you and your goons to remind you why First Tom just let me walk?”
Second Tom looked at the thin line blade had found itself at the edge of my fingers and made a show of thinking while he was visibly sweating in the cold night air.
“How bout I bump that up to a life time pass AND you stay out of my casino?”
“Oh why Tom, you know just the way to a girls heart. Deal. I’ll find your girl, send you a message or however many, and we’ll pretend this just didn’t happen,” I said, letting the blade dissipate and fall to the floor, “Now if you’d be so kind as to take a lady back to her room, I’ll set off in the morning.”
See this? This was Why he was always Second Tom. One puny half blood crimson noble makes a threat in his general direction and he folds like a napkin. I wasn’t even on a blood high, I couldn’t manage the shitty ropes with my own muscles and he thinks I could take out a bunch of buff goons on my lonesome?
Probably best to skedaddle before he wises up

OYA’KARIR — ii.
summary: you meet again in a mos shuuta bar. pairing: the mandalorian x rebel!reader rating: t, it will get violent, i’m sure a/n: mmmmmm tension, we love it
<   previous chapter   |   next chapter   >
You got away.
And for cycles, he thinks about it.
Part of him is bitter because of the missed bounty. If he’d managed to turn you over to the guild, alive, the pay off could have been enough for fuel and additional supplies for the clan.
Another part of him is bitter for an entirely different reason: plainly put, you got away. From him. And he’s the best in the parsec, he’s a Mandalorian. His damn honor won’t let him forget it.
And you had spoken in Mando’a. The dialect wasn’t one he was familiar with -- but with so many clans and houses scattered to the wind thanks to the Galactic Civil War, he was left wondering who you were.
A Saxon? Viszla? Wren? Or maybe just... aruetii... dar’manda. An outsider.
The war had changed things. Especially the state of Mandalorian culture and politics. He can’t help but feel like an aruetii himself. He comes and goes. Wandering feels right. Being grounded, being back at the clan’s house? Feels wrong. Too comfortable.
The bounty puck on his hip is new -- Greef Carga had promised it be an easy job, a quick asset collection.
When he enters the Mos Shuuta cantina, it doesn’t surprise him when he is met with a sort of silence that could snuff out a flame. Eyes fly across him, heavily armored and armed. For a moment, the sting of an anticipated shoot-out runs under his armor like a river of icy water.
But, the band in the corner, after a long pause, strikes back up and he goes about ignoring the itch in his trigger finger in favor for a seat by the bar.
And that’s when cycles-worth of thoughts sock him right in the face.
You see him the exact moment he sees you.
And you, The Condor perched upon a high stool and watching him with an icy gaze, don’t even flinch.
You just take a long sip from the iridescent blue drink in your hands, striking eyes sending him into a spiral of piqued intrigue and confusion. He can’t help but move closer, boots and armor tinkering as he does so. The bar hangs on his movements, nervous glances spared at your expense.
And still. You sit tall.
“Su cuy'gar,” you rasp. Your lashes flick downwards as you place your drink on the bar, all while he approaches with a measured level of caution, “Surprising.”
You’re still alive, you supply in Mando’a, prompting an amused snarl to flicker beneath his helmet.
“Tion'jor?” he counters, voice level with threatening sense of ferocity.
Why? You have to snort. You turn in your stool, elbow on the bar. And you finally get a good look at him.
He’s tall, broad shouldered and intimidating. The baskar steel helmet upon his shoulders hides the Mandalorian’s intentions. You do however, as you size him up, note the puck on his hip -- it’s glow is dimmer now. Not for you. For some other poor soul in this cantina.
“You let me go,” you chirp, “Sooner or later, your bounty will not run.”
You stand, hopping from the stool. Your boots kick up sand on the cantina floor. Tossing a handful of credits on the bar, you move to shoulder past him.
He snags your wrist.
You narrow your eyes.
His chest stirs.
In a flash, the high pitch whine of a primed blaster meets his ears as you lean close, barrel of the gun pressed to the space beneath his ribs. It’s hot and he can feel the DL-44 pistol jab him a bit rougher as you gain the upper-hand.
The bar hangs on the interaction.
“You’re not here for me.”
“Meg ti gar?”
Who are you?
“Does it matter?”
“How do you know Mando’a?”
“You ask too many questions,” you spit as he drops your wrist and you drop the blaster, holstering it and sneering, “and that will kill you, as well, utreekov.”
For the second time, you get away.
And he lets you.

He remembers waking up in cot with half of armor missing, his body was bandaged you and his wounds were cleaned as well. Once he woke up he rose in panic, not seeing the kid anywhere in sight. He tried his best to sit up without reopening his own wounds, he puts the baskar back on and moved around the small home that he suddenly found himself in, gripping his blaster he makes his way around the place.
He hasn’t spotted anyone yet. He was making his way outside to see if the kid was out least outside, he couldn’t lose the child not like this. One minute his was fighting with all of his strength to get the kid back only to wake up without him by his side. He knows that he’s grown a soft spot for the kid.
Hearing a loud roar he turns to his left to see a large fence with a nexu pacing around the fence, eyeing the small green child that stood on the opposite side with a small smile on its face.
The mandalorians face paled once he noticed how close the nexu was to the child, he’s heard stories of these creatures and how dangerous they are, their species was going extinct. Which made him wonder as to why their is one in the middle of no where.
Dyn began to run towards the child, watching as it reached its small hand out and moving it between the fence, reaching to touch the creature. “Get away from it!” He shouts as he points his blaster at the creature.
The Nexu took notice of the Mandalorian and hissed in anger, jumping onto the medal fence with its claws and roaring at the stranger. Dyn kept his blaster pointed at the nexu and moves to take the kid in his arms. Before he could to anything else he hears shouting on the other side of the fence. “No! Don’t shoot!” The Mandalorian glanced over to see a young man standing close to the nexu. “Please lower your blaster, it scares her!”
“How do I know you won’t let that thing kill us?” Dyn questions, glaring under the helmet.
“Because I raised her! Female nexus tend to get protective when they are around smaller children. She was just watching out for the kid, nothing else, so please lower your blaster.” The other begs as he tried to calm the nexu down by gently caressing its fur. “It’s okay, he’s not gonna hurt you.” He whispered, calming down the large creature as it sends one last hiss towards the Mandalorian and leaving back to its small den.
The other male quickly gets out of the large cage and locks the doors. “She won’t harm anyone so you can relax.” He says again and eyes the Mandalorian. “I see that you’ve gotten better, good thing the medicine is working.” He mumbled.
The child cooed, walking over to the fence his ears drop once he doesn’t spot the nexu.
The Mandalorian watched the child before turning back to the other. “Why the hell do you have a nexu here?”
“Wow, a thank you would’ve been nice from saving your ass. You and the kid were in a tough situation and heavily wounded, lucky that I was around to help but no—questions about the nexu first.” The other rambles out with his hands on his hips, giving the Mandalorian a small glare. “First, lets get inside and check your wounds, then you eat something. Later, I’ll answer your question.” He began to head back to the small house that he had, getting inside as he waits for the Mandalorian.
Dyn picks up the kid and walks back inside, he’s been through hell already and doesn’t seem to have the time to wonder if he should trust this man or not.
“What’s your name?” He asks, watching the other move around the small kitchen he had and was preparing some tea and pouring the two of them some soup. “Y/n, but everyone in the village calls me crazy.” He answers, turning around to set down the tray of food and drinks on the coffee table. “Been awhile since I’ve last seen a Mandalorian.” He blurts out, handing the child a bowl of soup with a smile.
The Mandalorian sits down slowly, wincing in pain as he sat. “You knew a Mandalorian?” He watched the kid eat, already knowing that he was going to eat later. “Yeah, they were nice and taught me how to fight and all. They were actually the ones that helped me raise the nexu.” He takes a sip from his own tea, leaning back in some soft cushions. “I didn’t take off your helmet, in case your wondering.”
Dyn was curious, waking up without his baskar and his wounds all healed up. “I know that it’s an important culture of yours to keep the helmet on. Didn’t want to do something that you’ll like so all I did was tend to your wounds, you’ve been asleep for almost two days. Little guy wouldn’t leave your side until the second day, he followed me around everywhere.” Y/n continued to talk, knowing the Mandalorian would ask questions about this stuff so he might as well and just say what he needs to say.
“Nexu took a liking to the kid, she got protective of him when I tried to put the kid to sleep. But I couldn’t take him away from her since she got all pissed so I let him sleep with her, he didn’t get hurt or anything. Nexu is a gentle creature.”
“It’s deadly—“
“Gentle but deadly.” Y/n corrects the Mando, once he finished his tea.
The room became silent, the only thing heard was the sound of the child slurping his own soup as he looks at the Mandalorian and then to y/n before going back to the mando.
“Why do you have that thing here?” Dyn was curious as to why a nexu was here, he knows that another Mandalorian helped him raise it but he wants to know why it’s here and not on its rightful planet.
“Like I said, I raised her. She grew up around different species and didn’t grow the knowledge to know how to hunt or act like an actual wild nexu.” Y/n sighs out and pushed his cup away. “She helps me...protects me at night in case anyone decides to do anything.” He shrugs. The Mandalorian watched as the other focused its gaze on the outdoors.
The Mandalorian lets a sigh slip from his lips before saying. “Thank you, for helping us out and for taking care of the kid while I was out.” This earns him a chuckle and smile from y/n, “don’t mention it, I was actually this close to trading you for food and supplies but somehow the little guy convinced me not too.” He confesses to the Mandalorian before standing up to clean up his mess and heading back to the kitchen.
——
The Mandalorian has been staying with y/n for the last couple of weeks, he was still recovering and he needs to find his razor crest before he can do anything else, he’s also been focusing his attention on the kid. Keeping a close eye on him since he doesn’t want him to be approaching the nexu without his consent.
Everyday he would watch y/n come in and out of that large cage, either to feed the creature or just clean up the place. Their were times when he would actually sleep inside the den with that creature during the night, making dyn asleep inside the small warm house that he had. He was still curious about the guy, he’s wanted so many times to ask him about the village and to why they call him ‘crazy’ or think of him as ‘crazy’.
One morning the Mandalorian was leaning against a small bench with the kid sitting on his lap. He watched as y/n pushes the gates open to allow the nexu to walk around freely which only frightened the Mandalorian, standing up with his arms wrapped around the child he watched as the nexu carefully steps out of its den. Y/n closes the doors behind it once the creature was fully out, he makes his way towards it and pats the side of its neck earning a purr in return. “Good girl.” He speaks to it and held out a small piece of meat, feeding it to her. “Today is your night, go fetch something interesting and return back by dawn. Understand?” The nexu purrs in understanding before y/n pats it’s side, allowing the large creature to run off into the forest.
“You didn’t send it off to kill someone for you did you?” Y/n laughs at the mandalorians concern. “No, why would I do that?” Dyn opens his mouth to reply but quickly shuts it. Not coming up with a good answer. “A nexu needs time on its own, they need to run free sometimes and I allow her to do that. She doesn’t hurt anybody and usually scavenger hunts for me. Brings me pieces to trade off for credits and with those credits I buy ourselves something to eat.” He explains, making his way towards the Mandalorian and stealing the child away from him as he cooed at the small green bean.
Dyn allows it since he’s gotten used to the other snatching the child away from him. “I’ve been meaning to ask—“ the Mandalorian tilts his head to the side. “I’ve noticed that you’ve been spending nights with the nexu, doesn’t it scare you a bit?” He asks. He noticed how y/n’s gaze shifts to the ground, the child on his hip as he sighs. “I—“ he began to say. “I’m—I’m afraid of the dark...” he finally says as his face heats up in embarrassment and tries to distract himself with the child.
Dyn raised his brows in shock. “Really?” Y/n bites his lip and glared. “Mock me all you want mando, everyone is afraid of something so don’t start judging me.” He blurts out in anger. Watching as the kid waddles around the place, trying to catch seem flies that were swarming around him. The mandalorian stays silent, he wasnt judging Y/n about his fear he was just wondering as too why he had the gut to sleep with a nexu. “I’m not, just got curious about it, not many people have the guts to sleep in a nexu’s den.” Y/n chuckles softly and shakes his head, looking out into that distance as he lets a sigh out. “My parents were killed when I was just a kid, I was on my own and survived on my own too.” He mumbles out. “So, when I bumped into a mandalorian she sort of took me in, taught me your culture and how you guys work things out but I didn’t want that, it was just too hard for me you know?” He tilts his head to look up at that mandalorian in questioning, wondering gif it was difficult for the mando to wreak a helmet that meant a lot to his people. “She found a litter of Nexu’s, the mother was killed by some troopers and half of the little didn’t make it expect for The one that I have now. She brought it too me, thinking that I can raise it on my own and surprise, surpise, I’ve raised a nexu all on my own. Training it to hunt, behave, and too kill.”
Dyn was impressed by Y/n’s past, he was just kid when it all happened and was able to do so much for himself, he sort of saw himself in Y/n. “At least you know how to control the beast.” He grins under his helmet as the other pouts at him, picking up the kid and handing him to the mandalorian. Dyn takes the baby into his arms and noticed a smirk on Y/n’s face, “Lets see If this kid can control the beast that he calls dad.” He teases.
Dyn looks down at the kid who coos happily and giggles, waving his tiny arms around before placing one on the mandos helmet. Dyn smiles at this and sighs, “Will see if he can.” He says, admitting of being the kids dad now.

Summary of: Filgaia
Tumblr media
Okay so since Wild ARMs is such an obscure RPG series and that a lot of it isn’t that well documented, I figured I would compile this post for my moots wanting to interact with my Jack muse or for those curious! Be warned that this will get wordy--WA gets pretty comprehensive with its lore--and also spoiler heavy for the first game.
Though Filgaia is a recurring world in each WA game, the cast, story, lore, and geography differ in each installment. (A bit like how Final Fantasy games share the same motifs but have completely different settings.) Since my muse is Jack Van Burace and since I’m most passionate about the first game, this post will only detail the first incarnation of Filgaia (particularly the PS1 original’s).
Geography and the Guardians:
Filgaia is an Earth-like planet that, in its current state, has been on a painfully slow decay for a thousand years now. Though the its ecosystems are still fairly diverse--with grasslands, forests, oceans, and even snowy mountains--most of it has increasingly turned into wasteland and threatens the areas still yet untouched. The planet’s continents form a sort of ‘ring’ that shapes two oceans; the Inner Sea and the Outer Sea.
The state of decay is caused in part by the Guardians’ diminishing powers--they are the 20 spiritual beings and beasts whose magic power protects and maintains the lifeforce of Filgaia. The Guardians and Filgaia are all connected by a spiritual channel called the “Ray Line” that lies beneath the planet’s crust and carries and supplies the shared lifeforce. They can lend their powers through protective tablets called Runes.
The Guardians’ diminishing powers are believed to be a direct result of the devastating war that occurred 1,000 years ago, which damaged most of the planet’s life and geography (there is a massive desert called the Sand Ocean created by the destruction). In reality the true cause of the Guardians’ loss of power was the inhabitants losing hope, courage, and love in their hearts (though that too was also caused by the war). The loss of these virtues have made the Guardians grow weak and themselves despairing.
Inhabitants:
Humans are the most populous on Filgaia. 1,000 years ago however, they used to share the planet with the Elw (”the ancients”) who were closely connected with nature but also very technologically advanced. The humans and Elws didn’t just share Filgaia, but also the human space colony Malduke that orbited around the planet. But as the colony was also equipped with the capability for mass destruction, the Guardians crucially sunk the connecting tower, Ka Dingel, to the bottom of the sea.
After the war, the Elws chose to abandon their homeworld for a new one in the Elw Dimension they created. One of the last things that the Elws did for Filgaia before leaving it was to create the “Elw Pyramids” to help amplify its lifeforce when the Guardians’ strength grew weak--essentially putting the planet on life support. But they also function as transports by teleporting people across Filgaia as energy with the use of satellites orbiting the atmosphere. Despite the Elw’s efforts, the pyramids seem to at most slow Filgaia’s decay.
The one other thing the Guardians are closely linked to are the women of the Adlehyde royal family. Though it’s not said why, the Adlehyde women are gifted with magic power and are the only ones who can hear and speak with the Guardians. The royal family’s heirloom is the “Tear Drop”, a blue gemstone that reflects the powers of the Guardians and also contains the essence of the shared lifeforce. In the right hands it can “give birth” to life.
With Filgaia’s never-ending hardships and the loss of valued virtues, there are a handful of people who have chosen to reject their former lives to become “Dream Chasers” (or drifters or migrant birds depending on translation); those who live for the thrill of adventure without a care in the world, though each person’s reasons are unique. Some are looking for treasure, some for fame or power, and some for simple belonging.
History:
Filgaia is defined by the very history of the great war. 1,000 years ago, the planet was invaded by the extraterrestrial Metal Demons--so called because they are of “living metal”. The Demons’ home world, Hiades, was destroyed by their parasitic Queen Mother and forced them to flee and conquer another world. Perhaps unaware of her true nature though, Mother’s sole desire and existence is to destroy everything in reality--which includes the Filgaia that the Demons hope to colonize.
The Metal Demons’ power was truly unparalleled and a grave threat to the inhabitants of Filgaia. To combat them, the Elws banded with the Guardians and humans to develop a series of powerful technological weapons. Many of these were far too powerful though and, after the war, the Elw sealed them away in tightly-secured ruins never to be unearthed. But treasure hunters and scientists eventually found them. These weapons were,
ARMs: Short for Ancient Relic Machine. These (I believe) can actually refer to any weapon the Elw developed for the war, but in this context they refer to very powerful firearms synchronized with psychic waves. In present day, they are highly feared and forbidden weapons--those in possession of one are often exiled from their homes, becoming drifters. They (along with other ancient technology) have been researched by the scientist Zepet and his six apprentices, now known as the ARMs Meisters. Despite the ARMs being taboo, there is a small growing interest and ‘economy’ in them as shops supplying bullets opened.
The Golems: There were eight golems created for combat and defense. They are mecha-like, able to be controlled by issuing commands, and each represent an element. The golems have now long since turned inactive and lifeless.
The Guardian Blade: Little is known about it, but it was a sword infused with pure life energy and was devastatingly powerful--it is actually rumored to be the main cause of Filgaia’s decay. It tore across the planet, forming the massive Sand Ocean desert, before ultimately destroying itself. The Elw consider its creation to be their greatest sin and the forger of the blade, the Elw Vassim, is labeled a criminal by his kind. In present day, most still believe it is hidden somewhere in the desert and have died trying to find it.
The Holmcross Project: (Or Humonculus.) They were the successor to the Golems and the Elw’s final weapons. The Elw and human mages created them by replicating the “biometals” of the Demons they had captured, essentially creating an artificial man who is both organic and metal. Their enhancements enabled them to better synchronize with the ARMs and made them the best choice against the Metal Demons. However because they were blank slates and lacked empathy and understanding in their hearts, the Holmcross went on violent rampages and killed anyone they came across. The Elw were forced to destroy them all save for one, a prototype they sealed away. (Spoiler: He later became Rudy.)
By far the greatest threat to Filgaia, aside from all of the Elw’s advancements, was Queen Mother. Whether the weapons helped at all or not, the Guardians were able to defeat Mother by splitting her heart into three pieces. Each piece became guarded by a Guardian Statue whereas Mother’s body was sealed away in a cocoon (called the “Arch” in Alter Code F). Queen Mother is not actually dead though; she’s technically immortal and would be revived if reunited with her heart pieces and given life by the Tear Drop. The cocoon was housed deep in Arctica Castle in the north.
Mother’s defeat thwarted the Metal Demons’ goal and they disappeared from memory, having seemingly abandoned Filgaia, and became part of the war’s myth. But Filgaia has never able to move on from its devastating past as the planet continues to decay and the inhabitants must live with the consequences. It’s easy to lay blame on the Elw, but the drive to develop the weapons was likely a mix of fearful desperation, a lust for intellectual or physical power, or even at the pressuring of the humans.
Towns:
Village of Surf: A small farming community that has fell on hard times due to the encroaching decay. Rudy used to live and tend to the horses here.
Curan Abbey: A boarding school south of Adlehyde that teaches the magic arts. It is customary for women of the Adlehyde royal family to study here until their 17th birthday.
Adlehyde Castle Town: The fortified ‘capital’ in front of Adlehyde Castle. In the ancient Elw language, Adlehyde means “light”. The town praises itself for its scientific community and accomplishments and holds a festival dedicated to their findings.
Milama Village: Also called the “oasis of Filgaia”, Milama is built around a moat of clear water and is one of the very few places still untouched by the decay. A popular destination.
Baskar Village: Another tiny farming community populated by people who bond with nature. It sits close to the Altar of the Wind Caller where the Guardian Zephyr, the “west wind of hope”, may be summoned. It’s also close to a Guardian Statue and an Elw Pyramid. Baskar supplies the “Kizim Fire”, which is used to light the pyramids’ furnaces and reactivate them.
Saint Centour: A city settlement named after its Guardian Statue: Ione Paua the centaur Saint Guardian. The city is heavily fortified with tight security and an invisible ‘dimensional’ barrier that surrounds it. This barrier repels monsters, demons, and spirits, but fails if either are smuggled inside with a person. It’s also near an Elw Pyramid.
Port Timney: A seaside port town along the Inner Sea that is mostly populated by trade merchants and sailors. There is a local tradition here that people propose marriage with a crystal flower. It sits near an Elw Pyramid.
Town of Yard: A harbor that sits close to the Sand Ocean desert. It used to be bustling with trade but has turned desolate as a result of the tumultuous sea warding off ships. There is a famous beach here where almost anything lost at sea is said to wash ashore there; it earned the town the nickname “Ship Graveyard” and is what most call it today.
Rosetta Town: A prosperous town that has managed to avoid the decay, but it is now also facing threat with the lack of trade ships coming in. It is most notably the home of the sole Elw who chose to remain in Filgaia, Mariel. But the townsfolk are suspicious of her. The town sits close to the secret Elw Dimension gateway.
Court Seim: An orphanage town founded by the Maxwells: Nicholi the ARMs Meister and his daughter Jane. They originally lived in Milama but, unable to afford it there, were forced to move away to a small, desolate island to keep supporting the orphans. There is an evacuation sanctuary nearby in case of emergencies.
Elw Village: Not actually part of Filgaia anymore but in the Elw Dimension. When the Elws chose to leave Filgaia they picked a large plot of land and isolated it within a dimension they created for themselves, which became a floating island. Outsiders are forbidden. The dimension resembles Filgaia before the war and its decay.
Pandemonium: Though most of the Metal Demons were defeated in the war, a small handful of them survived and secretly built a couple strongholds for themselves, including the Photosphere and Demon Lab--this one being their castle fortress.
Arctica: A proud kingdom that used to exist in the northern tundra continent. It used to be guarded by the seven Fenril Knights, who not only protected the royalty and the people, but also Mother’s cocoon hidden deep within the castle. A few years prior, the kingdom fell when the Metal Demons attacked. There were no survivors. (Spoiler: Except Jack and Elmina.)
Ancient Arena (Devil’s Playground in Alter Code F): A castle that holds gladiator-style battle tournaments. The battles are overseen by the self-proclaimed “Duke” Pegucci who, frankly, enjoys watching contestants battle-to-the-death a little too much. It is rumored that the arena used to be the castle of the King of Illusions in ancient times.
Malduke: A space colony in Filgaia’s orbit where the humans originally lived before they came to live on Filgaia with the Elw. It’s also called the “New Moon”. The colony and Filgaia were connected by a tower called Ka Dingel that could teleport travelers to and from. The colony has now long since been abandoned ever since the Guardians sunk the Ka Dingel to the sea to prevent Malduke from using misused for destruction.

How do you find other healthy birds from another person's flock to add to your program/keep as a pet? I'm never sure who's reputable, or what to look for, exactly. Thank you!
Tumblr media
Here is Sun Tsu, the evening he was purchased.
His eyes are bright. His nose is clear. No crusts or anything.
Breathes comfortably through a closes beak. No open mouthed panting.
His feathers are smooth and well groomed, regardless of the direction they are pointing.
He is well put together, and looks elegant, slick, and nice.
He’s standing upright and alert in this new environment that he has never seen before.
Tumblr media
Wu (Same breed. Same breeder.) is severely stressed.
Comparing her to Sun Tsu, you can see how her neck is sunk down into her shoulders.
She’s kinda sitting on her butt.
Her eyes are clear, and so is her nose, but she did a lot of panting.
She died in quarantine.
For comparison:
Tumblr media
Here is a recent addition: Jet.
They are stressed in this photo.; backed into a corner, standing horizontal, head hunched into their shoulders.
Tumblr media
Here it Jet’s normal, curious posture.
A little wary, but interested in what’s going on.
Tumblr media
Same bird, out of quarantine, fit, molting, and curious about their surroundings.
Look how smooth their feathers are. The new pins look pretty rough, but the established plumage is beautifully preened and in excellent shape.
Tumblr media
Here is Charybdis, in January.
She is an older, heavy lady, but she was in excellent shape at the time.
Tumblr media
Here she is in July, feeling her age.
Her eyes have sunken in a little more. (Giant Homers are a breed with deep set eyes)
Her crop is less full, and she gets tired more easily.
Tumblr media
This is what Ankhou looked like when he got here. He’s 4 weeks old in this photo.
Tumblr media
He’s blury as heck, but this is what a 4 week old feral pigeon should look like.
These are decent examples of Sick, stressed, aging, and malnourished..
But not seeing any of those symptoms does not mean the bird is fit.
In the years I have been keeping and rescuing and breeding Pigeons, I have learned that they have a CRAZY immune system!
An individual infested with two species of worms, coccidia, and an active Salmonella infection showed absolutely no symptoms through out her full 4 week quarantine.
She came from a breeder that handles his birds every day, brings them in when they are ill, and seems to genuinely care for his flock like family.
So it’s always better to test and be sure.
Unfortunately, pigeons are not kept like dogs, cats, parrots, or pretty much any other type of popular pets.
They are just outside, with, at best, two immunizations and monthly wormings.
It is not possible to avoid parasites and pathogens in outdoor enclosures, and pretty much every pigeon is kept in an outdoor loft.
Even by the people that actually do care about them as individuals.
So I kinda have to assume any and all new pigeons to be ill or at least infested with a gut load of parasites.
I can’t expect to find a healthy bird anywhere but my own loft, or maybe the children of a pair of house pets if I’m lucky.
For breeding, I just look for what traits I want and prepare to test and treat the new birds for what ever they may be carrying.
Pets can come from anywhere.
I get ferals, homers, rollers, and a few exhibitions and mixes from wildlife rehab.
I get performing and exhibition breeds as owner surrenders.
You would be amazed that you can find on Craig’s list or hoobly.

Baskar Seshadri Almost fifty years ago when I was a lad my father used to make me work on a fascinating equipment which I loved most for reasons unknown at that time. The Best Way to Start the Day
It's @bastiankitzler birthday! In honor of a personal favorite ship of mine, I wrote a little Baskar drabble. Enjoy @raddouchebag
His old bones ached. There was a crick in his neck keeping Bastian stiff and bed ridden. He stretched as best as he could and felt something worse than his pain: cold, empty space. His eyes fluttered open and confirmed his wife was gone. Her side crumpled as if she left in a hurry. Bastian sighed, disappointed he wouldn't get any extra morning affection.
Forcing himself up and out, Bastian put on some lounge pants and cleaned his face in their master bathroom. Since moving into a more private section of Mordhaus, he didn't have to worry about running into random klokateers on cleaning duty or grooming themselves in the communal bathrooms. It also meant a private kitchen as well. The Nespresso was a nice house warming gift from Toki and became part of Bastian's daily routine. This morning, however, there was a commotion unlike anything he heard before.
"Dons't touch that!" Kari yelped, "It ams hot...I tink?"
"Mama, what do you mean?" kind Katja squeaked.
"Well...Is...Is dons't know. Is puts de eggs in de pan and they ams supposed to cook and dat means 'hot' but they ams still wet..."
Katja peeked under the pan, "Umm, Mama, there's no fire here."
"Oh! Oh my!" She turned the knob and the stove clicked into life.
"Is breakfast done yet?" whined Heidi. She held a sticky spoon in her hand as she ate straight from the lingonberry jam jar to sustain her hunger.
"Heidi! Stops that!" Kari scolded her youngest.
"But I'm hungry!" She stuck the spoon in the jar and folded her arms.
Ahem Bastian cleared his throat. He leaned against the wall and watched the show with a smile on his face. The three girls faced him, paused for a moment and then...
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" they all cheered. His daughters rushed forward and hugged his legs. Bastian got down to his level and scooped them in his long arms, kissing their heads alternately.
"Thank you, angels." Heidi picked her head up and glared at her father. He rolled his eyes and snickered "Okay. Thank you, angel." She flashed a devilish smile and nuzzled her face against him.
"We wanted to get this ready for yous before yous wake up. But..." Kari fiddled with her hands nervously. They were stopped when he encapsulated them in his own. She met her husband's eyes, glistening with grateful tears.
"You did this all for me, love?" he asked her.
"Of course. And this amns't the only ting we have planned for today." Kari brought her lips to Bastian's and broke her hands free to place on his shoulders.
"I love you so much. Thank you. But how about we actually make breakfast, yeah?"
The family salvaged what they could and got ready to spend the day celebrating Bastian.

No warning, no escape as deadly gas swept through an Indian village

CHENNAI/BENGALURU (Reuters) – When gas began leaking from a nearby chemical factory and drifting towards his house in southern India, there were no warnings and no alarms, welder Elamanchili Venkatesh said.
He realised something was wrong when he woke up choking and spluttering in the pre-dawn darkness on Thursday in RR…

Life in a City Without Water: Anxious, Exhausting and Sweaty
CHENNAI, India — When the water’s gone, you bathe in what drips out of the air-conditioner. You no longer allow yourself the luxury of an evening shower at the end of a steamy summer’s day. You sprint down two flights of stairs with plastic pots as soon as a neighbor tells you the water tanker is coming.
Every day, 15,000 tankers ferry water from the countryside into the city. Everywhere you look, rows of bright neon plastic water pots are lined up along the lanes, waiting.
This is life in Chennai, a city of nearly five million on India’s southeastern coast.
The rains from last year’s monsoon season were exceptionally weak. By the time summer came with its muggy, draining heat, the city’s four major water reservoirs had virtually run dry.
Chennai has struggled with water for years. Either there’s not enough rain or there’s way too much rain, which floods in the streets before trickling out into the Bay of Bengal.
But the problem is not just the caprice of nature. Gone are the many lakes and fields that once swallowed the rains. They have since been filled in and built over. Land is too expensive to be left fallow.
Even groundwater is spent in many neighborhoods, over-extracted for years as a regular source of water, rather than replenished and stored as a backup.
And so now, little comes out of Bhanu Baskar’s taps at home, which is why she skips a shower on the days she doesn’t need to go out. She saves the water for her grown children, who both have office jobs and who both need a daily shower.
“It’s very uncomfortable,” said Ms. Baskar, 48, trying to hide her shame. “It’s very tough.”
“It’s not hygienic, also,” she said.
Chennai was primed for this crisis. The city gets most of its water each year from the short, heavy monsoon that begins in October and a few pre-monsoon showers. The trick is to capture what comes and save it for the lean times.
Chennai requires every building to catch the rainwater from its rooftops and pour it back into the earth, but that has not been enough to stop either drought or flood. So the city spends huge amounts of money scooping water from the sea, churning it through expensive desalination plants and converting it into water that residents can use.
Sekhar Raghavan, 72, a lifelong Chennai resident and the city’s most outspoken supporter of better rainwater harvesting, finds this absurd.
“Some of us knew this crisis would come,” he said. “For us, in Chennai, harvesting means putting every drop of water back into the ground.”
And then there’s climate change. It doesn’t bear direct blame for Chennai’s water crisis, but it makes it worse.
The city is hotter than before. Maximum temperatures have on average gone up by 1.3 degrees Celsius (or over 2 degrees Fahrenheit) since 1950, according to Roxy Mathew Koll, a climate scientist with the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology. In an already hot tropical city — often above 90 degrees Fahrenheit and very humid in the summer — that means water evaporates faster and the demand for it rises.
The seeds of the crisis can be found in Velachery, a neighborhood named after one of Chennai’s many lakes. The lake was once deep and wide, but as the city grew, portions of it were filled in 20 years ago to make room for private homes.
P. Jeevantham was one of the first residents in Velachery when it was developed. He built a slender, three-story apartment building, and manages a tiny shop selling everyday provisions on the ground floor.
What remained of the lake was deep and clean back then. That didn’t last for long. Because the city’s water supply was erratic, Mr. Jeevantham drilled a bore well to draw up water from the aquifer beneath Chennai. So did all his neighbors, up and down the block.
Today, Mr. Jeevantham, 60, runs his motor seven hours a day to satisfy the needs of his own family of four and their tenants. It slurps water from 80 feet under the ground, slowly draining from the lake.
“The lake is God’s gift,” he marveled. But for how much longer? This, he didn’t know. “Maybe five years,” he said, laughing uncomfortably.
Today the lake is a shallow, gray-green oasis, bordered on the edges by invasive weeds and trash, including, in one corner, a black and yellow, broken-down rickshaw.
Near the city center, the groundwater is nearly gone. Dev Anand, 30, still lives in his childhood home the Anna Nagar area. For much of his life, his family relied on what city water came through the pipes. When that wasn’t enough, they drew water from under the ground. This summer, that dried up. For a few weeks, his neighbor shared his water. Then his groundwater dried up too.
Mr. Anand, who is active with a civil society group that raises awareness about water, now relies on city tankers. He calls, complains, waits, worries.
The entire neighborhood is on tenterhooks. No one knows when their bore wells will be exhausted. People are still drilling more wells all over the city, draining the aquifer further and faster.
Every now and then comes a sprinkling of pre-monsoon showers. Those, too, seem to leave the city no sooner than they enter it. The water reservoirs have been cleared of silt and trash.
The city says it dispatches more than 9,000 water tankers on any given day, more than ever before; private companies supply another 5,000 tankers.
A steady stream of people line up at a public tap outside the city waterworks near Mr. Anand’s house. An auto-rickshaw driver said he came every afternoon with his wife and two children to fill up six big jugs. Men on scooters dangled their water pots on either side.
Everyone has their water-saving hacks. Rinse the rice, then use the water to wash the fish. Empty the dirty dishwater into the potted plants. Never, ever leave the tap running.
Forsake the washing machine, and hand wash everything with two carefully rationed buckets of water. To avoid a fight, fill only four pots when the water tanker arrives. Only once everyone has had their share should you consider going back for more.
And then there’s the air-conditioner. Everyone collects its drip. One day, when Rushyant Baskar woke up after working the night shift and turned on his water pump, a dry wheezing sound was all he heard. The buckets were empty, except the one under the air-conditioner. It was the only water he had.
“At that point, we thought we must get out of Chennai,” said Mr. Baskar, 28, who talks to clients in the United States at an outsourcing center. “It was devastating.”
These days, his family increasingly relies on the generosity of neighbors. Someone orders a private water tank and shares. As soon as a city water tanker shows, neighbors text — and the Baskars rush out with their jugs.
It is exhausting, all this waiting, worrying and keeping vigil for water. Mr. Baskar said he realized was sleeping less than usual. His mother said she hadn’t had time to check in with relatives on the other side of town. It used to be that you came to the big city to chase money, Mr. Baskar said. “Now we run after water.”

PagerDuty just filed its S-1
Yet another San Francisco-based company looks to be going public imminently. PagerDuty, an 8.5-year-old startup that sends a wide range of companies information about their technology, just filed its S-1, a public disclosure about its IPOs plans.
PagerDuty, which helps companies quickly respond to IT incidents, as well as increasingly tries to anticipate them, had reportedly filed confidentially several months ago, but the 35-day government shutdown meant that no one could review its prospectus (or that of other companies) at the time.
According to a January story from Bloomberg, Morgan Stanley is leading the offering.
We’ve reached out to the company for more information. In the meantime, the offering says it seeks to raise $100 million, an amount that’s frequently used as a placeholder.
PagerDuty was valued at $1.3 billion last fall when it closed on $90 million in Series D funding led by T. Rowe Price Associates and Wellington Management. Earlier backers Accel, Andreessen Horowitz and Bessemer Venture Partners also joined the round, which brought the company’s total funding to $173 million.
According to the S-1, venture investors currently own about 55 percent of the company. Andreessen Horowitz owns the biggest stake, with 18.4 percent of its shares sailing into the IPO. Accel meanwhile owns 12.3 recent, Bessemer owns 12.2 percent, Baseline Ventures owns 6.7 percent, and Harrison Metal owns 5.3 percent.
PagerDuty, which employed 500 employees as of last fall, has never been profitable according to its filing, which says it generated a net loss of $38.1 million for the fiscal year ended January 31, 2018. (It saw revenue of $79.6 million during the same period.)
The risk factors for the company hold few, if any, surprises, including competition and management changes. Another risk is security. In fact, the company reveals in its S-1 that its security measures have, in the past, been compromised and notes that they could be again, which isn’t nothing, considering how much information PagerDuty requires to execute its work, including the personally identifiable information of its clients, including contact information and physical location.
As the filing notes, cyber incidents and malicious internet-based activity continues to increase generally, putting pretty much every organization at risk.
We profiled the company’s CEO, Jennifer Tejada, last fall. She joined the company in 2016 after previously serving as the CEO Keynote Systems, a company that specialized in developing and marketing software as a service and which as since merged with another company. For roughly the last year, she has also been a director on the board of the cosmetics giant Estee Lauder.
Tejada owns 6.4 percent of PagerDuty, shows the filing. Meanwhile, PagerDuty cofounders Andrew Miklas and Baskar Puvanathasan, both of whom have since left the company, each own a 7.1 percent stake.
Assuming PagerDuty’s plans move forward without a hitch, Tejada will join a small but growing list of women CEOs who’ve taken the tech companies they lead public, including Eventbrite’s Julia Hartz and Stitch Fix CEO Katrina Lake.
PagerDuty also looks to be joining at least a handful of startups that are situated in San Francisco proper and planning to go public in 2019, including Slack, Lyft, Uber, Pinterest, and, very likely, Airbnb.
Little wonder the city’s Board of Supervisors is trying to prepare for how the influx of even more wealth will impact life for its already crowded residents, many of whom are already struggling to afford life in San Francisco, where everything from rent to restaurant bills have been steadily rising for years.
The cost of buying a home is expected to rise, too. As cited in SF Weekly, a recent study completed by academics from UCLA and Pennsylvania State University titled “Cash to Spend: IPO Wealth and House Prices” analyzed the impact of IPOs in California between 1993 and 2017. What it discovered, unsurprisingly: that home prices within 10 miles of the company’s headquarters rose on average one percent after the filing date and another .8 percent after the company went public.
