Whether you're a seasoned CarPlay user or just getting started, this guide will help you get the most out of your in-car experience.
Tumblr media
Understanding CarPlay

What Is Apple CarPlay?
Apple CarPlay is a feature designed by Apple that allows you to connect your iPhone to your car's infotainment system. This feature provides drivers with a safer way to use their iPhone while driving, as it allows them to access various apps, music, navigation, and more, all through the car's built-in display.
How CarPlay Enhances Driving Experience
CarPlay enhances the driving experience by providing a more seamless integration between your iPhone and your car. With CarPlay, you can easily access your favorite apps, make calls, send and receive messages, and get directions, all while keeping your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road.
CarPlay also provides a more intuitive and familiar interface, as it mirrors the look and feel of your iPhone's interface. This makes it easier to navigate and use, even while driving. In addition, CarPlay supports Siri, which allows you to use voice commands to control various functions of your iPhone, such as making calls, sending messages, and playing music.
Compatibility with iPhone Models
CarPlay is compatible with most iPhone models, including the iPhone 5 and later models. However, some features may not be available on older models. To use CarPlay, your car must also be equipped with a compatible infotainment system.
Many car manufacturers now offer CarPlay as a standard or optional feature in their vehicles. Some of the manufacturers that offer CarPlay include BMW, Ford, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, and Toyota, among others.

The Role Of Voice Recognition Technology In AI And Machine Learning.
Tumblr media
Speech recognition technology is something that has been dreamed of and worked on for many decades.
From the beep-bopping of R2-D2 in Star Wars to Samantha's dissatisfied but charming voice, science fiction writers have played a big role in shaping expectations and predictions about how speech recognition will be in our world...
However, for all advances in modern technology, voice control is a very sophisticated relationship.
It is felt to be historically helplessly clear and nothing but a novelty to simplify our lives. That is until we start to get more into the field of big data, intensive learning, machine learning, and AI technology. Similarly, text to speech is a technology similar to voice recognition that converts digital text into voice. Text to speech technology makes computer to read text aloud from the text document. There are many best free text to speech software that you can use to let your device read for you without looking at the text.
Voice Recognition: A Brief History
As with any technology, what we know today comes from nowhere, someone and someone else.
The first recorded attempt at speech recognition technology was in 1,000 AD. However, the tool that can answer direct questions “yes” or “no” comes back through development.
Although the experiment does not technically involve voice processing in any form, the idea behind it must be part of the foundation of speech recognition technology: the use of natural language as an input to speed up the action.
Centuries later, Bell Laboratories worked to develop "Audrey", which could detect vowel-speaking numbers 1-9.
Later, IBM developed a device that could detect and distinguish 16 spoken words.
These successes have greatly enhanced the dominance of technology companies focusing on speech-related technologies. The Department of Defense also wanted to join the action. Researchers are working steadily toward the goal of making machines more capable of comprehending and responding to our verbal commands.
The history of speech recognition technology is long and winding. However, today’s speech systems such as Google Voice, Amazon Alexa, Microsoft Cortana, and Apple’s Siri are not where they are today, there are no early pioneers.
Thanks to the integration of new technologies such as cloud-based processing and ongoing data collection projects, these speech systems have improved the ability to constantly hear and understand a wide variety of words, languages , and voices.
At this rate, the predictions of future writers are not as far-fetched as we might think.
The Voice Recognition Process: How Does It Work?
Around smartphones, smart cars, smart home appliances, voice assistants, and more, it's easy to know how speech recognition technology works.
Why?
Because it is easy to be misled by digital assistants. Speech recognition is still very complicated.
Think about how a child learns a language.
From day one, they hear the words used around them. Parents talk to their child, and even if the child does not respond, they perceive all kinds of sound signals; Noise, reflection, and pronunciation; Their brain designs and makes connections based on how their parents use their language.
Although it may seem difficult for humans to hear and understand, we train all our lives to develop this so-called natural ability.
Speech recognition technology essentially works the same way. Although humans have improved our process, we have yet to identify the best practices for computers. We must train them in the same way that our parents and teachers trained us. In addition, this type of training requires vision, research, and manpower.
These speech recognition systems take longer and more field data to complete; Thousands of languages, voices, and dialects need to be considered.
To say that we have not made progress; As of May 2017, Google's machine learning algorithm has now achieved a 95% word accuracy rate for the English language. This current rate is a limit to human accuracy, take care of yourself.
What is the best voice assistant?
Tumblr media
So far, we have all heard and/or used speech recognition systems; They entered the technological ecosystem to become a means of communication between humans and technology.
Voice input is a more efficient form of computing, as Mary Meeker said in her annual Internet Trends report: Humans can speak an average of 150 words per minute, but can only type 40. Farewell texting and push buttons - we're so busy now bus.
What has become the dominant form of computing is that speech recognition is unbelievable. In addition to regional accents and speech impediments, background noise can make word recognition difficult. Not to mention multiple-voice input.
In other words, recognizing sounds alone is not enough.
These speech recognition systems must be able to distinguish between homophones (words that sound the same but mean something different), to distinguish proper names from separate words ("Tim Cook" is an individual, not merely a search request for a cook called Tim), and more.
Ultimately, speech recognition accuracy determines whether or not they become voice assistants. It certainly answers the question of which voice assistants are the best on the market right now; In terms of speech accuracy, innovation and usability, and compatibility with other smart systems.
Apple’s Siri
Apple's Siri was the first voice assistant launched by mainstream tech companies in 2011.
Since then, it has been integrated into all iPhones, iPods, Apple Watch, Homepod, Mac computers, and Apple TVs.
Through your phone, Siri is being used as a major user interface for automobiles and wireless AirPods earbuds in Apple's Carplay infotainment system.
With the release of Sirikit, a development tool that allows third-party companies to integrate with Siri and HomePod‌, Apple's initiative Intelligent Speaker (after the success of Amazon Echo and Google Home), voice assistant capabilities Become strong.
There is always Siri with you, whether on the road, at home or even literally on your body. This gives Apple a big advantage in terms of adoption.
Although Apple has a big head when it comes to Siri, many users are frustrated by the inability of the device to understand and execute voice commands.
Naturally, being as quick as possible means getting too many errors for a function that does not work as well as the function.
But, to this day Siri is notorious for misinterpreting voice orders, even by providing a list of nearby liquor stores to respond to requests for help with alcohol poisoning.
If you ask Siri to send you a text message or call on your behalf, it can be done easily. However, when it comes to communicating with third-party apps, Siri is slightly less powerful than its rivals, working with only six types of apps: ride-hailing and sharing; Message and call; Photo search; Payment; Fitness; And auto infotainment system.
Why?
Because Apple advises that "users should not use voice commands without human experience, and what can be done to ensure that Siri works well". Is ", Reuters reports.
Siri will open any ride service app on your iPhone and you can book on the go. Gives you options like traveling to the airport and ordering a car.
Focusing on the system capability of follow-up questions, language translation, and re-incorporation of Siri's voice into a more human-Esque will definitely help to iron out the voice assistant's user experience.
In addition, Apple controls its rivals by country in terms of availability and thus makes sense of the slang of a foreign accent. Siri is available in more than 30 countries and over 20 languages - and, in some cases, many different dialects.
By comparison, Google Home is only available in seven countries and can only speak four languages 'simply' (English, German, French and Japanese), although it does support multiple versions of some languages. Alexa, on the other hand, can only handle English (U.S. and U.K.) and German.
Amazon Alexa
Inside Amazon's smash-hit Amazon Echo smart speakers, as well as the newly released Echo Show (voice-controlled tablet) and Echo Spot (voice-controlled alarm clock), Alexa is one of the most popular voice assistants today.
While Apple focuses on areas where it has the capacity and expertise to meet its needs, Amazon does not impose such restrictions on Alexa.
Instead, a voice assistant with a lot of "skills" (the term for applications on your Echo Assist devices) will "get the reliable following, even if they make occasional mistakes and are easy to use." Will try harder ".
Although some users have set Alexa's word recognition rate as a shadow behind other voice platforms, the good news is that Alexa will adapt to your voice over time with those with your unique voice or dialect. The problem can also be solved.
In terms of skills, Amazon's Alexa Skill Kit (ASK) probably pushed Alexa into a bonafide platform. ASK allows third-party developers to create applications and tap into Alexa's power without local support.
With over 30,000 skills and growing, Alexa has integrated Siri, Google Voice, and Cortana in terms of third-party integration. With the incentive to "add voice to your big ideas and more customers" (not to mention the ability to build for free in the cloud, "no coding knowledge required"), it's no surprise that developers are putting content on the skills platform. To
While some may not be able to help draw parallels with Apple's Appstore, it's catching the attention of developers trying to keep content - any content - on their platform regardless of whether it's worthwhile or not.
Its integration with smart home devices such as cameras, door locks, entertainment systems, lighting, and thermostats is another big selling point for Alexa.
Lastly, give users complete control over their home whether they are in bed or on the move. With Amazon's Smart Home Skill API (another third-party developer tool similar to ASK), you'll be able to control devices connected to customers from millions of Alexa-enabled endpoints.
When you ask Siri to add something to your shopping list, she adds it to your shopping list - without actually buying for you. Alexa goes one step further though.
If you ask Alexa to re-order her debris bags, she will go through Amazon and order them. You can order millions of Amazon products without lifting a finger; Natural and unique ability to surpass Alexa's rivals.
Microsoft’s Cortana
Based on the artificially intelligent role of the 26th century in the Halo video game series, Cortana launched in 2014 as part of Windows Phone 8.1, the next major update to Microsoft's mobile operating system.
At the end of 2017, Microsoft announced that its speech recognition system had reached an error rate of 5.1%. It surpassed the 5.9% error rate reached by a team of researchers from Microsoft Artificial Intelligence and Research in October 2016 and keeps its accuracy on par with professional human transcription, with benefits such as the ability to hear text multiple times.
In this race, every inch is important; When Microsoft announced its 5.9% accuracy rate at the end of 2016, they were ahead of Google. However, the fastest-moving year surpasses Google - but only 0.2%.
While percentages and accuracy rates are important, Cortana distinguishes itself from other voice assistants based on real, human-assisted assistants.
Rival services dig into data from devices, your search history, cookie trails you left on the Internet. While this is often useful, it can also be annoying in the form of non-stop notifications or it can scare the smart system into knowing too much about you.
We all saw 2001: the mother of all sensitive computers, the HAL 9000, was murdered with her pale red-eye and soft-butter robot voice.
To prevent this, Microsoft spoke with several high-level personal assistants, all of whom found that they had notebooks with important information about the person they were looking at. It was this simple idea that prompted Microsoft to create a virtual "notebook" for Cortana that would store personal information and anything Cortana approved for viewing and use.
It's not a privacy control panel, but it's exactly what Cortana does and gives you a little more control over what's not accessible.
For example, if you are not comfortable with Cortana accessing your email, you can add or remove access to your notebook. Another special feature? Cortana always asks you if she stores any information in her notebook.
Microsoft has teamed up with Halo developers on visual themes as well as voice actress Jane Taylor for Cortana's voice. These elements bring Cortana to life and form the personality and emotion to a system that would not have happened without that cooperation. Cortana’s personality shines through in everyday use - along with funny reactions from her circuit boards.
In addition to Google Assistant and Google Search, Cortana is supported by Microsoft's Bing search engine. This allows Cortana to chew up the data needed to answer your burning questions.
And, like Amazon, Microsoft has come up with its own home smart speaker, the Invoque, which performs many of the functions of its rival devices. As soon as Microsoft hits the market there is another big advantage - Cortana is available on all Windows computers and mobiles running Windows 10.
Google Assistant
Tumblr media
One of the most common responses to a question these days is "LMGTFY". In other words, "Google me".
This only makes sense when Google Assistant talks about answering (and understanding) any questions.
From asking to translate a phrase into another language, to change the number of butter columns to one cup, Google Assistant not only provides the correct answer but also provides some additional context and source information for the website This suggests that Google's powerful search technology supports it, perhaps with a surprising exception.
Although Amazon's Alexa was released two years ago (via the Echo introduction) than Google Home, Google has made significant progress in capturing Alexa in a very short period of time. Google Home was released in late 2016, and within a year, it had already established itself as Alexa's most meaningful rival.
By the end of 2017, Google had stated a 95% word accuracy rate for American English; Currently the highest of all voice-assistants. It turns out to have a word error rate of 4.9% - Google is the first in the group to fall below the 5% limit.
While some have tried to strike back at Amazon, Google has released several similar products for Amazon. For example, Google Home is reminiscent of Amazon's Echo and Amazon Echo Dot's Google Home Mini.
Recently, Google announced some new, important partnerships with Lenovo, LG, and Sony to launch a series of assistant-powered "smart displays" that will once again resemble Amazon's Echo Show.
Nuance’s Dragon Assistant and Dragon Naturally Speaking.
Although Nance did not come with a smart home speaker, their Dragon Assistant, and Dragon natural speech systems have been used as the backbone of speech recognition for other technology companies. "I need to be able to talk without touching my phone," said Vlad Sejonha, chief technology officer at Nance Communications. "It's constantly listening for trigger words and pop up the calendar or create a text message or browser where you want to navigate".
Nance's voice-recognition technology is largely centered around speech systems in the car; Embedded dictation capability and bringing interactive information to the car.
“Another development involves a deeper level of understanding,” says Nance’s lead solution architect John West.
West argues, "Here, the goal is not just to identify speech, but to gather meaning and purpose that enables voice-driven systems to respond intelligently, in a way that meets the needs of the user."
What is the best voice assistant?
Here's what we know
With over 400 million devices using Google Assistant, including Google Home speakers and Android phones, the company's voice assistant is now installed on more than 400 million computers and devices.
Similarly, Microsoft has officially stated that Windows 10 has 400 million active users; Exclude mobiles running a single system.
Since Amazon’s Alexa is only available on their Echo speakers, this number will definitely reduce the number of dwarves competing against Alexa.
On the other hand, with over 300 million iPhones worldwide by mid-2001, Siri took advantage of this space - not to mention the number of people who owned an Apple Watch, MacBook, or iPad.
With the support of millions of pre-existing users for the tech giants mentioned above, a simple software update is needed to integrate their post-voice assistants worldwide.
For example, people with Google's Pixel phones will be part of the Google Ecosystem. They are more likely to invest in Google Home Speaker, so they can get entangled with YouTube, Google Search, Google Maps, and more. Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft users are the same, without the least repetition of what ecosystem and what products they spend on.
It may depend on the use case.
After all, there is no one-size-fits-all winner when it comes to voice assistants.
If you like the Apple-consumer, Siri and its wide distribution across all Apple products will help you.
If you want to make your home a smart home, Alexa already has thousands of software and hardware integrations ready.
If you've been looking for a helper who can answer all your weird and amazing questions, Google Assistant's search engine will find the rest. If you want a little more control over what information your digital assistant has access to, Microsoft's Cortana has that functionality.
Collaboration that sets the bar high
The recently announced partnership between Microsoft and Amazon on August 30, 2017, is the real deal-breaker here.
This is correct. Alexa and Cortana are officially working together. Since both companies do not have popular smartphones (unlike Google and Apple), they have changed their assistants to suit their strengths.
Users can say "Alexa, Open Cortana" on their Echo devices and "Open Cortana, Alexa" on their Windows 10 devices.
Alexa customers will be able to remember Cortana's special features, such as booking meetings or accessing work calendars, picking flowers, or read your work email on your way home.
Similarly, Cortana customers can ask Alexa to control their smart home devices, shop on Amazon.com, and communicate with more than 30,000 skills built by third-party developers.
Therefore, in terms of voice-activation and digital assistants leading this new industry, Amazon definitely takes the cake.
The company not only supports the creation of other voice-activated technologies through their ASK and Smart Home APIs, but they are also the original inventors to create a smart home speaker with a smart home speaker and screen.
In other words, they are moving faster (and moving forward) than their rivals, all of which are new by continuing to share.
Speech Recognition in-Car
Tumblr media
Voice-activated devices and digital voice assistants not only make things easier.
It’s also about safety - at least when it comes to speech recognition in the car.
Companies like Apple, Google, and Nance are completely changing the driver experience in their vehicles; Allows drivers to focus on the road with the intention of eliminating the distraction of looking down on their mobile phones while they drive.
Instead of texting while driving, you can now tell who to call your car to or which restaurant to navigate.
Instead of scrolling through Apple Music to find your favorite playlist, you can ask Siri to find and play it for you.
If your car is running low on fuel, your speech system will not only let you know if your car needs refueling but also point to the nearest fuel station and ask if you have any specific brands. Priority to this
Or you can be warned that the petrol station of your choice is too far to reach with the rest of the fuel.
As advantageous as it may seem in the ideal scenario, speech technology in a car is dangerous if applied before high-speed accuracy. The study found that voice-activated technology in cars actually causes a higher level of cognitive distraction. This is because it is as new as technology; Engineers are still working on software kinks.
But, as rate speech recognition technology and artificial intelligence are improving, we can’t stay behind the wheel in a few years.
Speech Recognition Apps and Devices
Voice assistants are making a big difference in our personal lives, according to a recent study by Voice Labs that 30% of respondents cite smart home devices as the main reason for investing in Amazon Echo or Google Home.
This next generation of 'communication' technology provides users with a way to use the clumsy remote control interface.
Therefore, it allows consumers to talk and communicate with their electronics as they further increase the ease of human use and reduce the barrier to access to technology products.
Engineers must work hard to create an abundance of voice-controlled devices that can integrate with the voice technology of leading digital assistants; From appliances and safety devices to thermostats and alarm systems.
Nest, for example, is a company that invests capital in the new voice-technology frontier. “Your smart home should not be dumb,” the company said.
With the Nest Thermostat, you can use the Amazon Echo to control the temperature in your home with simple voice commands. Or, pre-order the Nest Hello Video Doorbell and get the Google Home Mini at no cost when shipping. From alarm systems to smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, Nest Protect thinks, speaks, and warns your device.
Bringing these voice assistants to the office in future applications of speech recognition, beyond the home.
In late 2017, Amazon announced new voice-activated tools for the office, hoping that verbal commands such as "Alexa, Print My Spreadsheet" would extend to normal office tasks. Microsoft's Cortana has begun to handle some other office tasks, such as scheduling meetings, recording meeting minutes, and arranging travel.
Today, only a handful of high-ranking officials have their own personal assistants. With the introduction of AI digital assistants in the workplace, everyone can be one.
To access the company's financial data from last week to last year, please ask your Google Assistant to create a graph showing the year's increase in click-through rates - there are many uses for implementing Digital-Assistant in the workplace.
Think about it - just like electronic computers, voice can go manually through the files on your computer so that paper records can be easily changed shortly before.
Video Games with Voice Control
Tumblr media
In these use cases, speech recognition techniques have been implemented with the aim of simplifying our lives, which is also evolving in other areas. Namely, in the gaming industry.
Creating video games is already exceptionally difficult.
Plots, gameplay, character development, customizable gear, lottery systems, worlds, etc. can take years to display properly. Not only that, the game can change and adapt based on the actions of each player.
Now, imagine adding another level to gaming with Speech Recognition technology.
Many companies that create this idea do so with the intention of making gaming more accessible to those who are visually and/or physically challenged, as well as immersing players further in the gameplay by launching another layer of integration.
Voice control can reduce the learning curve for beginners, with less emphasis on recognizing controls; The player can start talking immediately.
In other words: it can now be very challenging for game developers to collect hundreds (if not thousands) of voice data, speech technology integration, testing, and coding to keep their international audience.
However, despite all the goals that tech companies are shooting and overcoming challenges, there are already video games that believe the benefits outweigh the barriers.
Even mobile games and apps are now capable of using voice-activation in addition to the classic console and PC versions. Seaman, starring Leonard Nimoy as a sarcastic man-fish, debuted in the late 1990s, and Mass Effect 3, released in 2012, is just the latest example of speech technology in video games.
What is our history, where are we going?
Speech recognition has made major advances in the last decade; it's been 1,000 years in the voice technology market. Magic eight ball to today.
The intense level of competition we see among these tech giants in the industry and the growing trend of companies creating materials in space indicates that we still have a long way to go.

After that, be sure that the CarPlay is implemented. If the problem persists even after it’s active, then you have to forget the connected vehicle and then connect it again.
Be Sure Your Vehicle Is Adaptable
Again, this may not seem to be a straightforward solution to the issue, but it would be great to keep the incompatibility problem out of the way right from the word go. Go to “Apple’s Dedicated CarPlay Webpage” to determine whether your vehicle supports CarPlay.
Make sure Bluetooth is connected
Another essential thing you have to do is to ensure that the Bluetooth is connected and enabled when you are using the CarPlay wirelessly. To do this, Go to the “Settings App” on your iPhone and turn on the Bluetooth option.
Make Sure To Enable Siri When It Is Locked
When you are trying to connect the Apple CarPlay with the Siri command, and the virtual assistant is not responding, make sure that Siri is enabled when the device is locked.
Simply go to the settings app on your iOS 16 and select the Siri option. Then make sure that the “Allow Siri When Locked” option is enabled.
Check your USB cable
If your USB cable is uncertified, it could be playing spoilsport. If you are using the CarPlay through the USB cable, make sure that the cable is running properly.
Ensure That Apple CarPlay is Not Confined to Your iPhone
Screen time lets you restrict CarPlay; the problem could very well be due to this constraint. Simply open the settings app, select “Screen Time,” and then the “Content & Privacy” option. After that, tap on the “Allowed Apps” and then enable the CarPlay option.
Restart your iPhone
Whenever you encounter a problem with your iPhone, you have to make sure to give it a chance to reset. In most cases, it does not disappoint you. So we would recommend you try it out as well.
Reset Network Settings
If you still face the problem, try reinstalling the network settings. If the problem is connected to the network, then resetting the network settings method can get rid of it. To reset, open the “Settings App” and then navigate to the General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings and lastly, confirm the action.
Update your iPhone
If CarPlay is still not working, a software disease could be coming in the way. To do this, open the Settings App > General > Software Update. Then, download or install the currency iteration of iOS.
Conclusion
After reading this, we believe that you have figured out how to fix the Apple car play not working issue. The methods mentioned above are the most reliable ways to solve the CarPlay issue in your iOS 16. Hopefully, these solutions have helped you take the CarPlay back on track.

Siri App For Mac
Tumblr media
Siri is the voice assistant on Apple devices, equivalent to Amazon's Alexa, Microsoft's Cortana, and Google's Google Assistant. Siri is available across most of Apple's devices, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and HomePod.
Siri App For Mac
Use Siri On Mac
Facetime App For Macbook Air
Facetime App For Macbook Pro Free
WatchOS4: 'Hey Siri, I'm going for a run' -> Started the Workout app and the run workout, straight to the 3 second timer. WatchOS5: 'Hey Siri, I'm going for a run' -> Starts the Workout app and then nothing. “With Siri, Apple basically created a smart operating system. While Siri is still limited, it shows the direction for the future of operating systems beyond mobile. It more closely resembles something we'd find via Cydia on a jailbroken iOS device, but she talks like Siri and acts like Siri, so let's just call her Siri. Admit it, you wish Siri was on your Mac, and so do I. “Hey Siri” is supported on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch with iOS 8 or later while plugged in. Not supported on first-generation iPad, iPad 2, and first-generation iPad mini. Siri Suggestions for Shortcuts are supported on iPhone 6s or later, iPad Pro, iPad (5th generation or later), iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4. Apple Music subscription required.
Tumblr media
You can ask Siri all kinds of questions, from simple queries about the weather to more complex questions about everything from sports scores to the number of calories in food. Siri can also enable or disable settings, find content, set alarms and reminders, place calls and texts, and so much more. This guide covers the basics of Siri, including some of the commands you can use to activate Siri, devices that have Siri included, and devices that support more advanced hands-free 'Hey Siri' commands.
Activating Siri
On an iPhone or iPad, Siri can be activated by holding the Home button on compatible models or holding the Side button on devices without a Home button. On the Mac, you can click on the Siri app icon on the dock or the menu bar, or press and hold the command key and the space bar. On a Mac with a Touch Bar, you can press the Siri icon on the Touch Bar. On 2018 MacBook Air and Pro models or the iMac Pro, you can activate Siri with a 'Hey Siri' command. On the Apple Watch, you can say 'Hey Siri' to activate Siri. On Apple Watch Series 3 or later with the latest version of Apple Watch, there's a Raise to Speak feature that lets Siri respond to commands even without the Hey Siri trigger word. Just hold the watch near your mouth and speak. Siri can also be activated by holding down on the Digital Crown. On first-generation AirPods, a double tap activates Siri, and on second-generation AirPods, Siri can be activated with the 'Hey Siri' command. On HomePod, say 'Hey Siri' or press on the top of the HomePod to activate Siri. On Apple TV, hold down the Siri button on the remote (the button with the microphone) to activate Siri.
Devices Compatible With Siri
Siri is on almost every Apple device, and it's built into macOS, iOS, watchOS, and tvOS. You can activate Siri on Macs running macOS Sierra or later, all Apple Watch models, the fourth and fifth-generation Apple TV, all modern iPhones, the AirPods, and the HomePod.
Devices That Support 'Hey Siri' Without Power
Most Apple devices have support for the 'Hey Siri' activation command, but more recent iPads, iPhones, Macs, and Apple Watches offer hands-free 'Hey Siri' Siri support even when not connected to power. That means you can use the 'Hey Siri' trigger phrase at any time to activate Siri. Compatible devices are listed below:
iPhone 6s and later
Second-generation AirPods (iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch connection required)
5th-generation iPad and later
All iPad Pro models except the first-generation 12.9-inch model
5th-generation iPad mini
3rd-generation iPad Air
All Apple Watch models
HomePod
2018 MacBook Pro
2018 MacBook Air
iMac Pro
When multiple devices that can respond to 'Hey Siri' commands are available, the devices will use Bluetooth to determine which one should respond to the request so not all of them answer at once. According to Apple, the device that heard you best or the device that was most recently raised or used will respond. If you have a HomePod, the HomePod will often take precedent and respond to 'Hey Siri' requests even when other devices that support the feature are nearby.
Countries Where Siri Support is Available
Siri is available in more than 35 countries around the world, including the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and many countries in Asia and Europe. A full list of countries where Siri is available can be found on Apple's Feature Availability website. Certain Siri features like translations, sports info, restaurant information and reservations, movie information and showtimes, dictionary, calculations, and conversions are limited to a smaller number of countries.
What Siri Can Do
Below is a list of some of the commands and questions Siri is able to respond to, and some of the actions Siri is able to take.
Make calls/Initiate FaceTime
Send/read texts
Send messages on third-party messaging apps
Set alarms/timers
Set reminders/check calendar

Siri How Tos
Passive Siri
Siri is an active assistant that you can interact with, but Apple has also integrated Siri into other aspects of iOS and watchOS, allowing Siri to make proactive suggestions that you can act on. On the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, Siri can make various kinds of recommendations. When you're running late for a scheduled meeting, for example, Siri might suggest that you call your boss either on the Home screen or when you swipe down to search and access the Siri Suggestions options. In Messages and Mail, Siri can suggest things like phone numbers or addresses based on what you've typed, and in Safari, Siri can offer up search suggestions. Siri can do other things like suggest HomeKit scenes to activate, suggest a time to leave when you have an event scheduled, suggest events to add to your calendar from your email, and more. Siri suggestions are all based on your personal device usage habits, so what you see will vary. There's also a feature in iOS called 'Siri Shortcuts,' which are shortcuts and automations that let you complete multi-step tasks on your iPhone. Siri Shortcuts are so named because Siri will suggest them to you and because you can activate Shortcuts with a Siri trigger word.
Siri Videos
We've done several videos highlighting different Siri features, and our most recent can be found below.
Siri Privacy
Siri does send data back to Apple, but searches and requests are not associated with your identity to keep your personal information safe. Apple does not sell your data to advertisers or other organizations, and end-to-end encryption is used for all data syncing between your devices and the cloud.

For many Mac users, one of the top features of macOS 10.14 Mojave will be the new Home app and support for controlling HomeKit devices with Siri on the Mac. Both of these have been sorely missed in previous versions of macOS, but Mojave is finally changes things…
Home app
First and foremost, macOS 10.14 features a new Home app. As Apple explained on stage at WWDC, this is one of the applications it brought from iOS to macOS using new cross-platform frameworks.
On the surface, it’s not necessarily clear that the Home app was brought directly from iOS to macOS. It looks and operates like a Mac app for the most part, though there are some instances where things feel a bit wonky.
For instances, when you would 3D Touch in iOS app, you have to right-click on macOS. This isn’t explicitly clear and causes some funky windowing to occur. However, what’s important to remember here is that this is only the first beta of macOS 10.14 Mojave, and we can expect Apple to refine things as the testing continues over the coming months.
In terms of features, the Home app on macOS works just as you would expect it to. App for google photos mac download.
Along the top of the app, you have tabs for Home, Rooms, and Automation, as well as a “+” icon for creating a new scene or automation. At this time, it appears that scene creation is broken in the Home app for iOS and macOS, but that’ll be fixed in future betas.
Do you also know that the User Guides installed with them if you did a download/install and didn’t get a box with books in it? Note that if you already have a MyFonts folder on this Mac, you will want to add the content of the one you have copied from the first computer rather than simply pasting it into the Fonts folder, so that you do not lose any fonts already on this second computer. Do you know that there are reference guides for your PREMIER+ 2 embroidery software that are much more extensive than the User Guides you got in the box with your program installed on your computer? Gopro app for mac.
In the Home tab, you see all of your favorite accessories and scenes, just like on iOS. Right-clicking allows you to choose between Quick Controls, such as changing the brightness or color, as well as a “Settings” menu for changing the icon, name, and more.
Siri App For Mac
In the Rooms tab, you can filter between your various rooms and see each accessory there. To switch between Rooms, you have to use the “View” tab in the menu bar or swipe left/right with two-fingers on your Mac’s trackpad. Using the “Edit” option in the menu bar, you can view your list of existing rooms and create new ones.
Finally, in the Automation tab, you can view and edit your existing automations, while the “+” button lets you create new automatons. Tile app for mac desktop.
Siri Control
At long last, you can now use Siri on your Mac to control HomeKit accessories, as well. This works exactly how you would expect it to. Simply tap the Siri icon in the upper-right corner of your display and you can instantly start issuing commands.
Use Siri On Mac
Wrap up
It’s nice to finally have support for controlling HomeKit accessories from macOS, whether it be from the Home app or Siri.
Facetime App For Macbook Air
While the Home app on macOS still has its quirks, it’s incredibly useful for times when you don’t have your iPhone or iPad near you. Of course, we can also expect Apple to continue making improvements as the macOS 10.14 beta testing period continues.

All About The Nissan Micra
The current 2021 Nissan Micra is perfect if you’re looking for an injection of excitement in your life.
The fifth generation of Nissan’s iconic Micra represents a significant progression in design and will revitalise the small car segment in South Africa.
Nissan put customers at the heart of the development of the Nissan Micra with extensive focus groups and clinics to create a no-compromise package that answers the needs of small car buyers.
With a bold exterior design and an interior that is both contemporary and premium, the current Micra is perfect if you’re looking for an injection of excitement in your life.
Nissan’s contender in the Lower B hatchback segment, the Micra Active, will continue to be sold alongside the 2021 Micra, which will make its mark in the Upper B hatchback segment.
In South Africa, the Upper B hatchback segment represents approximately 15% of the passenger vehicle market, making it one of the most popular segments in the country.
The new Nissan Micra has dynamic hatchback proportions, and with an overall length of 3,999 mm, it’s placed right at the core of the B-hatchback segment.
Featuring a sculpted body with strong and sharp character lines visible from every angle, the car delivers an athletic feeling that’s hard to ignore.
From the front, the shortened bonnet design and reduced A-pillar angle create a poised silhouette.
The narrow headlamps stretch through the front wings and include signature LED daytime running lights on every trim level.
Halogen headlamps are standard on all grades. The lights frame Nissan’s familiar “V-motion” grille, reinterpreted to complete the new Micra’s bold front-end design.
Below the car’s sloping roofline is the expressive character which runs the entire length of the new Micra’s body, dipping dramatically as it passes over the front door and sweeping upwards towards the rear.
The black B and C-pillars create a floating roof effect, while the C-pillar is home to the discrete door handles which provide access for rear passengers.
At the rear are the striking new boomerang-shaped light clusters.
Below them is the sculpted bumper which features a carbon-look finish as standard and hides the car’s exhaust pipe.
Above is the sports-style rear roof spoiler, also standard to enhance aerodynamic performance. Together, these features create a recognisable motif for the back of the car.
The expressive exterior design moves the Micra in a daring new direction with a high-quality cabin that boasts two-tone soft-touch materials as standard across the range.
Thanks to outstanding packaging, the five-door-only body shell boasts best-in-class ergonomics for front-seat occupants, with no compromise to rear passenger space.
The cabin is based around a T-shaped “gliding wing” dashboard, with simple structures that create excellent space for the driver and front passenger. The instruments and controls have been grouped together for comfort, convenience and safety.
Outstanding ergonomics was another development target on the new Micra – a target that was achieved. The car sets new standards in the B-hatchback segment thanks to its smart packaging.
A rake/reach-adjustable steering wheel is standard, while the lowered seating position for driver and front passenger means there’s exceptional headroom for taller occupants.
Coupled with fore/aft driver’s seat adjustment, it means a driver who is 2.03 metres tall can fit comfortably behind the steering wheel.
Special attention was given to the design of the front seats in order to provide continuous back support, helping to decrease driver fatigue on long journeys. The car’s width means enhanced elbow space for rear passengers, who also benefit from excellent shoulder and knee room.
Boot capacity is a very competitive 300 litres and delivered without compromising on rear passenger knee room. That figure expands to 1,004 litres when the 60:40 split rear seats are folded down.
Smart storage options are everywhere in the new Micra’s cabin, with location, capacity and design all optimised to ensure maximum convenience for occupants. Larger items can be placed in the centre console ahead of the gear selector. It offers flat storage for a phone, and includes ambient lighting plus USB and 12v sockets.
Customers’ desires to express their own personalities and design tastes through the new Micra will be another part of its appeal. The car will be available with a wide range of personalisation options, modifying the exterior and interior with premium components in a variety of stylish and contemporary colours.
The new Nissan Micra is equipped with a wide range of technologies designed to enhance the car’s comfort, convenience and safety performance. Many of them are standard across the range, while others are available from specific grades.
There are three specification levels available – the Visia, the Acenta and the Acenta Plus. The Visia comes standard with 15-inch steel wheels, daytime running lights, front power windows, a manual aircon, a Bluetooth and MP3 compatible audio system, cruise control, automatic headlights, six airbags and much more.
The Acenta adds 16-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights among other features while the Acenta Plus has 17-inch alloy wheels, a leather steering wheel and an Energy Orange interior.
The 7-inch touch-screen colour display on the Acenta and Acenta Plus allows the driver to access features such as music, messages and maps through Apple CarPlay in addition to the MP3, USB and Bluetooth in the Visia model.
When an iPhone is connected via an Apple lightning cable, it offers users Siri voice control, Apple maps with turn-by-turn navigation, access to music, telephone services and other apps such as Audiobooks and Spotify.
Complementing the audio unit is the advanced driver-assist display, located in the speedometer display. Positioned to minimise “eyes off the road” time, it uses a high-definition 5-inch Thin Film Transistor colour display to provide the driver with key information about the car and journey. It’s based on technology that Nissan developed for the Qashqai and X-Trail crossovers and is controlled using dedicated steering wheel buttons.
Every new Micra comes with six airbags as standard, plus seat belt warnings and seat belt height adjustment for the front and rear. Isofix child seats are standard in the new Micra, including in the front passenger seat. Electronic safety systems include Vehicle Dynamic Control, Anti-locking Braking System, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Hill Start Assist.
The new Nissan Micra is a fantastic car to drive, with a dynamic performance that strikes the perfect balance between agility, excitement and the secure feeling that comes with confident and predictable handling.
There is one engine available at launch– the 66kW, 140Nm Turbo-charged petrol engine which delivers both driving pleasure and outstanding practicality.
Whether it’s darting through traffic in the city or out on the open road, the new Nissan Micra is an exceptional car to drive. It’s the perfect blend for today’s Upper B-hatchback customer. But it’s not just great to look at and drive; the new Micra has a best-in-class drag coefficient of just 0.3cd, to maximise fuel efficiency.
The new Micra has been built on Nissan’s existing V-platform and has been significantly enhanced to deliver new levels of performance.
The new Micra provides exceptional stability and reduced body roll through corners thanks to its high body stiffness and advanced suspension.
In addition, the low driving position promoted by the excellent ergonomics of the interior reduces the centre of gravity, further enhancing the secure driving feel.
Responsive and accurate steering comes from a new brushless electric power unit and provides a high degree of manoeuvrability.
The Micra also benefits from a remarkably quiet cabin, promoting a comfortable and more relaxing experience for the driver.
It’s due to the enhanced noise isolation technology engineered into the car and is particularly noticeable during high-speed driving.
It’s designed to allow the driver to hear the engine response, but stay isolated from other noises, such as those generated by the tyres on the road.
Nissan has an extensive accessory personalisation offering for the new Micra, with features and colours designed to enhance the car’s already expressive exterior and uplifting interior.
In 2019, the range will be expanded with the inclusion of additional derivatives starting with the 1.0 Spec and prices will be confirmed next year.
If you’re a confident, independent thinker with a sophisticated sense of style, the all-new Micra is made for you. If you’re eager to achieve more in life, you know how to multi-task, and you have a busy social and professional life, you need a car that measures up to you and the Micra is that car.
And, of course, the Micra provides peace of mind motoring and comes with a comprehensive aftersales offering together with hassle-free motoring.
As with all other Nissan vehicles, the Nissan Micra is covered by Nissan Assured and comes with a 6-year/150,000km warranty; a 3-year/90,000km service plan; and 24/7 roadside assistance.

Renault Sandero Stepway Plus (2019) Review
Renault has updated its Sandero budget-car range in South Africa through the addition of a new Stepway Plus flagship derivative. Should this keenly-priced, feature-packed crossover be in your crosshairs?
Where does it fit in?
Look closely and you'll notice the Plus stickers located subtly underneath the side mirrors. The 16-inch wheels catch the eye!
Visually, the Stepway Plus is differentiated from lesser Renault Sandero derivatives by the addition of gloss black side mirrors (with detailing) and its 16-inch 2-tone alloy wheels. Given their price points, the Sandero Stepway Expression and Plus are effectively a bridge between the entry-level Kwid and compact family Renaults such as the Duster and Captur. Buyers are increasingly favouring crossovers and SUVs, and the Stepway is a version of the budget Sandero with added ground clearance, front and rear skid plates and wheel arch mouldings. Is it a good proposition? Find out below.
How it fares in terms of…
Carting a small family around
The Stepway Plus shares its powertrain with the Clio. Its 0.9-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder motor develops 66 kW and 135 Nm, which do not sound like lofty outputs, but when you consider the car's low kerb weight (just 1 055 kg) you realise the engine doesn't really have much mass to shift around. Granted, things are little different when you start factoring passengers and cargo into the equation. When the Stepway Plus has 3 adults and some cargo on board, its engine labours and fuel economy takes a hit. There's a little bonus though. When you depress the accelerator pedal fully, you'll feel a little button click at the end of the pedal's travel. This triggers the motor's overboost and a little bit of extra power (and urge) ensue.
On-road refinement
The Stepway Plus has a 5-speed manual 'box with a light shift action, combined with an easy-to-modulate clutch pedal, which is just as well, seeing that you are likely to change cogs quite often in cut-and-thrust traffic. The Sandero has what's termed as a narrow powerband, an area in the rev range where the engine is at its most responsive (maximum torque arrives at 2 500 r/min) and you'll be seeking that sweet spot often, like when you need to execute overtaking manoeuvres. Use the aforementioned overboost functionality and you should be able to dispatch slower traffic easily.
Usually, 3-cylinder engines tend to sound a bit gruff, but we think Renault has done a good job of suppressing the triple's vibration and noise characteristics. At full throttle, there's a cute little rumble coming from the engine bay, typical of 3-cylinder engines. In terms of economy, the little Stepway Plus displayed 6.8 L/100 km on the trip computer, which we think is fair. It's pleasant to drive too, with a fair ride quality and light steering. The suspension is adept at soaking up moderate road imperfections, which is helped by the fact that the 16-inch alloys are wrapped in thick rubber.
The Renault is nimble around town. "Plus" the reverse-view camera and rear parking sensors, allied with the light steering, make it easy to park in a confined space. Finally, despite it not being marketed as an SUV, the newcomer offers a useful 193-mm worth of ground clearance, giving it some credibility off the tarmac. You can effortlessly mount a kerb and traverse gravel in the Stepway Plus.
Features
It does not take much effort to activate Apple CarPlay; simply plug an iPhone's cable into the USB slot above the touchscreen.
The Sandero Stepway has always been generously equipped and the Plus is especially so. The top derivative gains all-round electric windows, rear parking sensors, satellite navigation, cruise control (with speed limiter), a reverse-view camera and trip computer. For the first time, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available on this vehicle and you connect via a USB port and Bluetooth. Annoyingly, the USB port is positioned at the top of the infotainment screen, meaning you'll have a cable dangling in clear sight. It's odd, as most USB ports are positioned in more remote locations.
Despite its budget aspirations, the Stepway Plus' safety spec is ample. It features 4 airbags, ABS with EBD, hill-start assist and impressively, electronic stability control. The latter can't be switched off and proved its worth when 1 of our testers drove through a big puddle on a rainy evening.
Practicality
The ability to load in a 29-inch mountain bike was a boon.
Despite the Sandero Stepway being marketed as (and priced equivalent to ) a compact city car, it's surprisingly spacious inside. Rear passengers are afforded ample headroom and just about enough legroom to render the Renault a small family car. With the rear seatback in its upright position, luggage space is commendable, with substantial length and depth to the loading area.
And, with the 60/40-split seats folded down, there's even more space available. This author was able to load in a 29-inch mountain bike, mountain bike accessories and camera gear (including a tripod) with ease. Renault claims 292 litres of space, which is a touch larger than its nearest rival, the Volkswagen Polo Vivo. The cabin itself is well thought out, with sufficient compartments and storage slots for mobile phones, keys and so on.
Price and after-sales support
The Sandero price includes Renault's 5-year/150 000-km warranty and 2-year/30 000 km service plan. Services are at 15 000 km intervals, available at Group 1 Renault.
Verdict
Should you buy one? Many consumers complain that new cars are too expensive and that the kind of financial outlay required to buy a vehicle of substance "out of the box" is beyond the means of most of the population. The Sandero Stepway Plus is Renault's antidote to that sentiment – the newcomer offers a lot of specification and tech, is pleasant to drive and is honestly priced. There's more kit in the Sandero Stepway Plus than in some more expensive new cars and, despite our criticism of it being underpowered when fully loaded, chances are the majority of customers will be singles or couples who won't experience that issue. The Plus is charming; you'll be hard-pressed to find more new-car value at this price point.

Are Stoners Really Safer Drivers Than People Texting or Using Touch Screens?

Now there’s another survey showing how using a smartphone appears to dramatically slow a driver’s reaction time and increase the chances of having an accident. Once again, drunk drivers and cannabis users fare better than sober test drivers using a phone hands-free, texting, using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto voice controls, or – worst of all – using the phones for touch-screen tasks.
This survey, done in the UK for IAM RoadSmart, found that slower reaction times when using smartphones or touch-screen applications on highways increased stopping distances by four to five car lengths. On some tasks, drivers’ eyes were off the road for as much as 16 seconds, and the worst reaction times were connected to doing touch-screen applications.
A TRL study for IAM RoadSmart shows how much driver alertness was reduced by alcohol, weed, and phone/car interactions. (The kind of study that never lacks for volunteers.)
The testing, in a driving simulator, has test subjects who used either iPhones or Android phones (in their own lives) drive a simulated test route three times: once without phone interaction, once using phone voice control, and once using the car’s touch screen with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto running (not the car’s native infotainment interface). IAM RoadSmart, which describes itself as the UK’s largest road safety charity, reported six major findings in the report:
Controlling the vehicle’s position in the lane and keeping a consistent speed and headway to the vehicle in front suffered significantly when interacting with either Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, particularly when using touch control
Participants failed to react as often to a stimulus on the road ahead when engaging with either Android Auto or Apple CarPlay – with reaction times being more than 50 percent longer.
Reaction time to a stimulus on the road ahead was higher when selecting music through Spotify while using Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
The impact on reaction time when using touch control (rather than voice control) was worse than texting while driving.
Use of either system via touch control caused drivers to take their eyes off the road for longer than NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration)-recommended guidelines.
Participants underestimated by as much as 5 seconds the time they thought they spent looking away from the road when engaging with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay via touch control.
Interestingly, Apple CarPlay users were more distracted than Android Auto users when using voice control and issuing car touch-screen commands. The tasks included two music-related sub-tasks while following another car, dealing with erratic highway traffic while handling navigation chores getting to a railway station, and finding a restaurant or gas station. Reaction was measured by the time to notice a red band of light on-screen. Alertness was mention by the reaction time and driver behavior (such as current speed, deviation from lane position, eye gaze behavior, and self-reported performance).
According to the report, “Driver distraction [is] estimated to be a factor in 10-30 percent of collisions in Europe.” The study found some interesting contrasts: Test-drivers said they preferred, in the personal lives, to use touch-screen over voice, yet these tests showed voice was more efficient than touch-screen interaction.
Most academics end their research by saying, “Further research is indicated,” because it often is, and because everybody wants more research grants.
The death rate the last decade, factored for population increase and miles driven (yellow line), is less than one-quarter what it was when the middle of the boomer generation came of driving age circa 1970.
We’d like to see more research that helps explain why being legally drunk at the lowest level of illegality, 0.08 percent BAC (both in the US and most of Europe), has the least effect on reaction time: 12 percent more than a sober driver. Not that we’re in favor of backing off on getting drunks off the road. Before the US drunk driver crackdown that got serious around 1980, half of all highway fatalities were linked to drunks. Yet, even though there are probably way more people texting and tinkering with music playlists than drunks, the death rate has been essentially unchanged for much of the past decade.
Part of the reason drinking (also driving stoned) is so dangerous is that a driver is drunk for the entire trip. (Stopping for coffee gets you a wide-awake … drunk.) Texters only do it for part of any trip. Of course, there are probably more texters and phone-yakkers driving all the time.
We’d also like to see how driver-assists affect (improve) safety. We suspect adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and lane departure warning or, better, lane keep assist/lane centering assist, are so good they bail out texters before they run into something or someone. And it would be interesting to comparison test distraction using a hard-to-reach center stack display mounted high on the dash versus one the driver can reach without leaning forward in the seat.

Ford Writes Off $181 Million of Pivotal Stock
In May, 2016, two months after former Steelcase CEO Jim Hackettleft the board of automaker Ford to become head of its “mobility services”unit, Ford invested $182 million in a Silicon Valley company called PivotalSoftware. “The investment is part of Ford’sexpansion to be both an auto and a mobility company,” Fordsaid at the time. The emphasis was theirs. Hackett subsequently became CEO ofFord and has staked his tenure on Ford’s mobility future.
It wasn’t altogether clear why Ford needed to own a stake in a cloud software company, which subsequently got on the wrong side of an open-source software push led by Google.  (If you must know more about kubernetes and containers, you might start here.) As a result, Pivotal’s stock, which though public is controlled by computer maker Dell, has plunged. And on Thursday, Ford announced it had marked down the value of its stake by an amount equal to nearly its entire initial investment in the company (Ford says it still owns Pivotal shares worth $170 million). Ford’s shares fell 7% on Thursday on a weak earnings report, including the Pivotal write-down.
It’s yet another story not only ofhow fast technology moves—Pivotal was an IPO darling just last year—but alsohow difficult “digital transformation” is. Ford can use all the italics andbuzzwords it likes. It is right to play all the latest trends includingautonomous vehicles, bike rentals, shuttle bus services (like its now-shutteredChariot offering), and also to slap the word “mobility” on its efforts.
At the end of the day, though, Fordis really good at making sturdy pickup trucks and marketing them globally.Hackett’s mobility future has yet to arrive.

Some nice writing and a perfect summation of Facebook’ssituation, courtesy of The Wall Street Journal: “Facebook’sresults show the duality that currently defines the company: It is a punchingbag for critics, who pummel it for privacy missteps and misinformation on itsplatforms, but a darling of investors, who prize the earning power of itstargeted advertising.”
***
When Geoff Colvin wrote about the newAT&T in May he noted the company’s problematic and massive debt. Withasset sales and its cash flow the phone-company-turned-media-empire has been chippingaway at the net debt, down from more than $180 billion to about $150billion in the last quarter. Here’s what Geoff tells me: “The company still faces lots of bigissues: 1) What happens when its late-to-the-party, high-priced streamingservice really rolls out next year; 2) Effects of a combined Sprint-T-Mobile;3) How it fares in the eternal ground war against Verizon; 4) What happens ifthere’s a big slowdown or recession?

NEWSWORTHY
Winner, winner, chicken dinner. The great contest with millions of dollars of prize money at stake finished over the weekend and the winner was…16-year-old Kyle Giersdorf, aka “Bugha.” Yes, I’m talking about the Fortnite World Cup, the online battle for $30 million that drew some 40 million players and ended Sunday with the final 100 participants at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. In that other globally-watched contest, 22-year-old Egan Bernal became both the youngest-ever winner of the Tour de France and the first winner from Colombia.
A demon on wheels. Next year’s Apple iPhone models will all have 5G capability, plugged-in analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts. That’s good news for iPhone fans and the wireless industry, which is spending billions to build the super-fast new networks. But in less good news, BMW has started charging customers $80 per year for connecting their iPhones to Apple’s Carplay feature in its cars. And in even less good news, Apple contractors are listening to Siri recordings, some unintentional, that have included medical information, drug deals, and couples having sex, The Guardian newspaper reports. “A small portion of Siri requests are analyzed to improve Siri and dictation,” Apple explained.
I just want to stand on the podium. The mystery press conference was not much of a mystery. On Friday morning, the Justice Department finally gave its blessing to the Sprint-T-Mobile merger. The carriers agreed to spin off some airwave licenses and Sprint’s prepaid business to Dish Network, which–at least in theory–becomes the “new” fourth major carrier. But a lawsuit from 14 attorneys general is still pending. Speaking of giant telcos, in less that four years, startup Reliance Jio has become the largest carrier in India, with 331 million customers, edging ahead of Vodafone last month.
Breezing through. United Airlines invested an undisclosed amount in airport security service Clear, following a similar move by Delta. Top frequent fliers on United will be enrolled for free in the $179-a-year service that uses biometrics to speed passengers through security checkpoints in 31 airports and counting.
Getting the munchies. European food delivery service Takeaway.com is acquiring rival Just Eat in a merger valued at about $11 billion. Takeaway.com CEO Jitse Groen keeps his title, while Just Eat interim chief executive Peter Duffy is out.
Virtual doctoring. The Department of Health and Human Service’s Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, or BARDA, is investing $27 million in Spectral MD, a Texas-based startup creating an A.I. systems to help assess burns and other wounds. The money will fund a clinical trial for pediatric patients.
Pay me the money. The $5 billion Facebook settlement with the Federal Trade Commission did not please all of the people all of the time. Nonprofit advocacy group the Electronic Privacy Information Center, or EPIC, filed a lawsuit challenging the deal.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Why are companies switching to open floor plans and unassigned offices, aka hot desking? Research is pouring in on the trend–and it’s not good. Financial Times columnist Pilita Clark was invited to a talk about the benefits of the practice. She was not impressed:
Hot-desking apparently goes cold when workers try to cling on to a desk by sticking a family photo on it or draping a coat over a chair, moves she described as “signs of encampment.”
Rules had been brought in to stem such practices. Anyone away from their desk for more than a couple of hours was supposed to “clean and clear” it. When the coat problem had worsened in winter, “we had to have facilities going around with a gentle reminder.” Disciplinary action was also taken when workers grumbled about the loss of roomy personal cupboards or shelves to stash their stationery and work papers.

How the Ram 1500, Ford Ranger, and Chevrolet Silverado Compare in 5 Areas
The 2018 Detroit auto show was the most truck-heavy show we’ve seen in years, with three major automakers debuting new pickups. GM and Fiat-Chrysler had new generations of the Chevrolet Silverado and Ram 1500 to show, and Ford brought back the midsize Ranger to our shores after an absence of nearly a decade. We don’t have all the specs yet—and yes, the Ranger is in a different class than the Silverado and Ram—but we can still compare these new trucks in a few key areas.
Engines
The new 2019 Ram 1500’s gas 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engines mostly carry over but receive new eTorque starter/generators fed by a small battery pack that provide between 12-16 hp and 90-130 lb-ft of torque, depending on application. The eTorque motors also restart the engine in 0.55 second after shutting off via the new stop/start capability. The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 is set to return in 2019 without the eTorque mild hybrid system.
The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado’s full engine lineup is unknown but will again include 5.3- and 6.2-liter V-8 options, now equipped with cylinder deactivation tech that can shut off as many as seven cylinders. But the big news is an all-new Duramax 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-six that GM promises will deliver better performance than the competition, possibly meaning 30 mpg on the highway. A four-cylinder hybrid could be offered in the future. Chevy says a total of six engine and transmission choices will be available on the Silverado 1500.
Meanwhile, the 2019 Ford Ranger will launch with a version of the 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbo-four found in other Ford products. It’s a second-generation turbo-four and features a forged steel crankshaft and twin-scroll turbocharger. No specs were revealed, but it could make around 280 hp and 310 lb-ft like the unit available in the Explorer. Future engine options could include a turbodiesel five-cylinder that’s available in other markets, but no hard details have surfaced yet.
Transmissions
Given that these are next-gen trucks, high gear counts are to be expected, and all three deliver. The 2019 Ram 1500 uses a specially tuned version of FCA’s eight-speed automatic, which has been programmed with more than 40 shift maps to work in concert with the eTorque system. Meanwhile, the Silverado and Ranger both use the 10-speed automatic that was jointly developed by GM and Ford. The Hydra-Matic 10-speed can be found on Silverados with the diesel and 6.2-liter V-8, and it comes with stop/start tech.
Infotainment
All three trucks get their respective automaker’s latest infotainment system, but the Ram 1500 Limited steals the show with a segment-first 12.0-inch touchscreen running Uconnect 4C (the display is shown above). The screen is brighter and sharper than FCA’s others, producing 1,000 candela per square meter and matching the resolution of the iPhone 8’s Retina HD display. Lesser Ram 1500 models will continue to use the 8.4-inch touchscreen. SiriusXM Guardian offers a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hot spot for a subscription fee.
Base Chevy Silverado 1500 work trucks will get a 7.0-inch color touchscreen, and LT models and up get an 8.0-inch unit. A 4G LTE Wi-Fi connection continues to be offered for a subscription fee. The Ford Ranger gets an 8.0-inch touchscreen available with Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system and also offers a 4G Wi-Fi through the subscription-based FordPass. All three trucks are compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (when properly equipped), but only the Ford is available with the Amazon Alexa voice assistant.
Bed
Although connectivity is great, people buy trucks to do truck stuff—and the bed is a big part of that. The 2019 Ram 1500 will be available in multiple cab and bed configurations, and the bed in each features sides that have been raised 1.3 inches to increase box capacity. RamBox in-bed storage continues to be offered and adds a 115-volt power outlet and repositioned lighting in the lids.
The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado’s bed gains nearly 7 inches in width, thanks to new construction methods. The bed floor is made of roll-formed high-strength steel and is rated for 500 megapascals of force (up from 340 MPa in the previous model). An in-bed 120-volt outlet provides up to 400 watts, enough juice for most large power tools. GM’s CornerStep bumpers are now taller to accommodate work boots, but the Silverado’s big party trick is its available power tailgate that can lower and raise using the key fob.
Ford didn’t provide dimensions for the U.S.-market Ranger, but the truck will be offered as a four-door supercrew or a supercab with two rear half doors, so there will likely be different bed sizes.
Off-Road Chops
Not all truck owners will take their rigs off-road, but those who do will appreciate that the Ram 1500, Silverado, and Ranger all have the capability to do so, along with special variants designed to do it better.
The Ram has an available updated air suspension and new Frequency Response Damping shocks that improve performance off-road. There’s also a new 4×4 off-road package that include a 1-inch lift, unique shocks, locking rear axle, and hill-descent control feature. Of course, the off-road-oriented Rebel trim is still offered, which gets the locking differential standard along with a host of other goodies.
The Silverado’s suspension gets a redesign, which should help its off-roading prowess. For maximum off-road looks and capability, though, there’s a new Trailboss variant that adds a 2-inch lift and the Z71 Off-Road package, which includes skidplates, Rancho shocks, a locking rear differential, and 18-inch wheels wrapped in Goodyear Duratrac off-road tires.
Ford says the Ranger is designed with off-road adventures in mind, which is why it has such a short front overhang and high ground clearance. There’s an FX4 Off-Road package available that includes all-terrain tires, off-road-tuned shocks and suspension, skidplates, and a Terrain Management System similar to the one available in the F-150 Raptor. A Trail Control feature acts like a low-speed cruise control and takes over throttle and braking to let the driver focus on steering. An electronic locking rear differential is available, and four-wheel-drive models have a selectable low range setting.

iOS 11 will make driving with your iPhone safer
iOS 11 is set to arrive this Fall as a free software update for millions of iPhones. There are several new features that will make driving with your phone less distracting.
Recently, tech expert Rich DeMuro got a sneak peek at these new features coming soon.
The first is called “Do Not Disturb” while driving. This feature will automatically silence your phone notifications while you drive. Also, your screen will not light up for new messages. Anyone who texts you will get an automatic text back that says you are driving. If it’s an urgent message, they can text back the word urgent and the text will “break through” Do Not Disturb.
