18 and no cell
A while back I downgraded from a semi-recent iPhone to a feature phone (Nokia 2780), which was well and good until I broke it in a confused scrimmage with physics lab equipment. At the time I was so busy I couldn't make myself do anything about it, so now I'm just without a mobile phone. And it's been fine. I actually like it, not being constantly connected to the world, not being constantly available... Of course my circumstances are what makes this doable: I'm living with my parents until the end of the summer and have no job that requires I have a phone. I know this isn't sustainable in the long term, but I'm trying to make the most of it while I remain at the dusk of childhood, before responsibility forces my hand. Still, I thought I'd share a couple anecdotes and logistical things because I've seen a lot of people talking about "dumb phones", but no one talking about no phone at all.
Logistics:
When I need to call my parents, I use the phone of a friend or professor. When I need to call some organization, I just use my dad's number
Copy down directions a quick map on desktop before leaving the house if I'm going someplace new
Do everything school related on laptop
That's kind of it... it's been so much easier than I thought it would be. I guess it makes sense, most people had a time in their lives where they got by just fine this way. Many remember a time where everyone did (I don't—I was born in the year of the iPhone). It's been delightful enough that I've begun to dread returning to a mobile phone, even if it's just a flip phone.
Some anecdotes:
I've been reading a lot more (a LOT more—too much. I've been neglecting studying a little in favor of reading). I'm reading The Secret History and a collection of Thoreau's essays and Night Train to Lisbon now. I like going to the park with just a book and enjoying the June weather with nothing else demanding my attention
Now my downtime feels more restful than it ever has, and it makes me feel like I never rested in my previous adolescence. I think having a device like a smartphone on you at all times is kind of exhausting, like a cursed amulet that feeds off your internal struggle to not be on it all the time... or something
I've spent way more time outside just zoning out and staring at trees and flowers and the fan on a side of a building doing absolutely nothing. and my head feels clearer doing this
I drafted a 2000 word essay for my English class in a leuchtturm journal. I sat in my high school library for two hours with a giant dictionary on right and a thesaurus to my left. The librarian then gave me the thesaurus, saying I was "the only person to have used it in ages. Actually, it's already been removed from our catalogue..."
I heard that some people are talking about a "no phone summer" or "low tech summer" and so this is my two cents on that. If you're my age and can't imagine life without a phone, maybe you should shut it down for a week and see what happens. My friends still like me and I see them often. Probably more often now that I can't text them (I've told them all to just email me 😭). So much of younger gen z are on their phones near constantly (I was no exception, with my 5-8 hours of it) and I worry what happens when we're never properly alone with our thoughts. I think high schoolers can take a week or a month or maybe even a year off and learn a lot about who they are. I don't know, I'm not anti tech, I just hope we don't waste away our whole lives like this. I feel bad for how much of my childhood I spent doing nothing on a phone, and it's only in the past few months that I finally feel free from this tug of having everything all the time.

I love how people will just assume my phone is shitty because it's a Motorola with a case that tells it's age. I went to the fuckin Verizon store and they're like "we'll upgrade your phone for free" and I was like , well I guess if it's free. And they were like "do you want an iPhone that will break in two years" and I was like "I'm an android user" and then they were like "well the one we can give you for free has 7 hours of battery life" and I looked at my phone which has held power for three days before and said "so you'll downgrade my phone for free then?"

Hometown Story
The expectations of this game can be summarized as C grade ds game to awkward mobile game era game to one of those games that they really mean it when it takes time to warm into.
Given my years with Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons, I was genuinely expecting a much more in depth experience but came to an admittedly mid experience. When you find out it was also released on iphone with minimal downgrade, it suddenly makes it clear why I was able to buy a sealed copy for $4 . It isn't bad, it's a different focus and while admittedly too bare bones at the start, once I found a good gamefaqs guide for event triggers I found my rhythm. You really don't have to do much in the game, walk around, pick up everything you find, maybe buy some stuff from the village but definitely come to buy from the 2pm merchant, and stop in your shop to check a bunch of people out every so often.
Things I wish I better knew starting out:
Your tables are not limited, the game has you start out by just dropping one down but you can in fact immediately put more down. My dumb ass went in game weeks with just one item for sale awkwardly waiting around for someone to want it thinking I had to desperately wait for the merchant to have more.
The day doesn't start till you open your shop so if you want to reorganize a little first, do it at 6am.
Sometimes events are triggered by putting up key items to be sold on shelves. I didn't want a rando to buy it but the won't. However, also put it into unreachable corners since you won't need to restock those shelves often. I would definitely cross check guide info on what items go to what event if you dgaf about spoilers like me because sometimes you'll get them for characters you haven't even met yet which takes up valuable space. Then there's ones like the masterpiece which might require in game months of sitting around for their event to trigger.
Fill your store with fruits and sewing kits initially as some characters require that for unlock.
ALWAYS. BUY. WOOD. I was so used to wood being such an easy resource but this game has made it hell for me to wait to get 5 pieces. It can only be bought from the merchant and while he stocked it often at the start, suddenly he never had it. I'm making so much money but I'm stuck on level two because of not having wood.
Thus far I've gone a 12 hour playthrough probably with some gratuitous pausing to read several half finished sources to know that I'm supposed to do. I'm the type of person who like to tailor a guide for my HM style games so my ADHD doesn't overwhelm me trying to keep up with all the tasks so having a lot of very barren wikis and gamefaqs is stressful to say the least. It's been more of a game of patchwork this time. Speaking of said ADHD, the point was I'd say I've made it about half way through the story. I'm at a very awkward point where I feel like I've finished some quest lines while still not having met some pivotal characters to the story. So far I think I'm missing 7 story based characters. It is pretty annoying that the cutscene activation is fickle, I'll follow everything but sometimes it just won't activate that day. I'm barely one month through and I'd even say it's possible to see that whole game in just that one month, maybe two at most but its dependent on things you can't control. Multiple items sit on my shelf waiting to introduce a character to me for weeks in game while I had two item based cutscenes for a character back to back. I mean like literally the moment I placed the next item down after having watched the first. The imbalance in that can only make me think I might end up getting stuck in a slow down after this point.
I personally would like to see the story through if I can. I've been mostly playing this while sick at this point so I've had the time to rip through it.
I think the most unexpected thing about it is how the scenes kind of actually stick with me. As a long time fan of the series, I feel like I've always had a surface level relationship with villagers in farm games. I would say older ones give relatable struggles but don't get too deep into them, maybe even the closest being A Wonderful Life but that's a series I consumed as a kid when a lot of things went over my head and admittedly a lot of my backlog is just catching up on a series that admittedly, looks to have gotten extremely fluffier as it went on. Olive Town has not been that deep. I think one of the bachelors has a somewhat deep plot but since I'm not romancing him, I'm just off with my horsegirl girlfriend having cute dates and befriending the locals when I'm not drowning in makers. And then on the other hand theres Stardew Valley which for some reason only hit me in the last year how like, all the townspeople are just as terrible as the villians.
Maybe that's a stretch but it slapped me in the face when I realized the reason why I spent so much time on my farm was because a lot of them had pretty unlikable traits. So in all the places to feel emotionally invested, I did not expect the half baked spinoff to be it. Yet something about how the mayor and his wife are actually kinda cute with each other or how the mayor's wife coyly has an unaging friend wanting to bring her puddings, or the kinda real moments where the fisherman and the girl from the sea are clearly in an intimate moment and I'm let to realize this isn't even a rival moment like it would've been in some other game. This is it, you are irrelevant to the relationships these characters have.
I think maybe there was some really good power to that. The fact that it seems intentionally most of the romancible npcs are the last characters to arrive in town (two still have not moved in for me) but that you aren't in control of the relationship and can't even date till after the main storyline I think is actually a function that would benefit it's parent series. Imagine a Bokumono where you spent the majority of the time focusing on your farm, building the relationship you have with the town, and saving the day (the town, the harvest goddess, the farm etc) and then after all that some of the friends you met turned out to be people who might like you as more than that. I get why the formula is what it is, this series started in the 90s as a simple 'work hard and raise a family' type of life sim narrative and while it's been modernized that's still at its core but when we talk about franchise shake ups, I could see this being a really good one. I think to some extent people look at the marriage candidates as a check list goal rather than characters to bond with and sometimes that dating check mark even made me not really associate with other villagers outside of benefit. I can't say I'm still not doing that to some extent but the fact the character cutscenes are the progression checks has some satisfying merit to them. I can't ignore the village anymore and it's made me appreciate the characters beyond their benefit to my part in the story. How do I put this, I like the idea of being with Reina in PoOT because I like the idea of her with me and it also feels wrong that she's the only person in the whole town who lives in a basement and I could change that. I only ever saw Rick as an absolute dick as a kid because well he was but also out of some competition to win over Karen and I could never understand why she would go for him. In games like Animal Parade, I'm debating my spouse based off of what kids they'd have moreso in the way I'd miss out on content rather than think about how those characters work with each other or why they'd like each other at all. But hell, again I see this fucking probs a mermaid and fisherman and the way he's bothered she likes being with him and its like okay wow fuck, I'm feeling things for these baby faced sprites.
So like yeah, this was low key working up to talking about the big spoilery plot twist that they kill the local boy. He's literally every generic child boy character to exist in one of these games. He's excitable and adventurous and like, I acually hate kids y'know? But fuck if they didn't masterfully try to fuck with your heart to grow attached to him. Of course they use him for a bunch of like, early level questlines. He's basically a tutorial kid but then the town starts to expand and he gets some fellow snot nosed kids in town, a girl he likes and a 'in the shadow of my manly dad' best friend and y'know conveniently he's always there in storylines. His mother has a few about her restaurant and he's there fucking up making a sign because he's a hyper and excitable 9 year old or something. His sister is interested in medicines so one of those episodes revolves around him. Pretty much everything related to his Peter being sidekick to his grizzled shonen warrior dad has him chilling in the background as well or if there's a crowd around some newcomer of course he's apart of it. I applaud how well they probably actually fucked with the few who played this who then had to deal with a dead kid. Digs up a whole bunch reading The Bridge to Terabithia as a teen.
Like I said, I'd love to make it to that point if the spread of content last well. I don't think I'll play much after this weekend of the game if I don't but I'd say in the end $4 is worth the experience I got.
At first the town looks garishly barren. I still can't fully say it looks good either. A lot of areas start to get a couple of houses in it as it goes on and it really changes a lot though I feel the Town Square needed some much more in it. The map is confusing as hell and the fixed angles are nauseating at first but I've mostly worked out a rhythm. It was hard to stick through it this far if I'm honest but I think it was worth it.

Hey I followed you here from Twitter. Just wanted to say that if you have an Android phone then you can get around the rate limit by downgrading your Twitter app to somewhere around 2020 Twitter (or even later than that).
You would have to look up a guide how to do this and then disable Automatic updates for apps, but I have an older version of Twitter and it works fine. It's even faster and more bug free than the newer versions, so. Anyway, just wanted to share this with syktwt or at least the syktwt who've temporarily migrated here.
hey!! sadly i have an iphone and will now forever be in pain lol
but thanks for letting me know! honestly desktop is still working for me fine so…. its not all over yet

I’ll just leave this on the wall, but whenever my relatives bring up how the degree in art that I just finished has become obsolete with the access to ai generated art becoming popular, I’ve begun to ponder how just as vulnerable their jobs are to automation.
One day cars will become functionally identical to iPhones. Forget mechanics that potentially will fudge the prices on your timing belt, now we will have robots that will simply replace it for a fraction of the cost! All you have to do is accept and foot the bill for all the operations without question, just click “agree all” in the TOS.
Just like Apple they won’t fix anything, the best they can do is replace each part that has aged out of the market and replace it with fresher sell by dates. And don’t worry about all the waste- to adhere to our new green initiatives, all car parts have been made biodegradable! However that also means that there is no durability to the car and is therefore dysfunctional when in conditions ever so slightly strenuous beyond what was tested for in a lab.
And we’re really getting into a Ship of Theseus dilemma with just how many parts you’ll be changing every other month. Is your car even the same model you bought? Or a downgraded version they’ve replaced and put together over time in order to get you to come back again and again.
Now see, it really doesn’t matter to the consumer where their money goes nor how it’s been spent to fix their shit. Honestly it’s because of this inherent ignorance that mechanics were able to rip them off in the first place.
But you, the pushed out mechanic knows. And I, the surrendering artist, know. That they, the consumer, are getting ripped far off more than what we could have ever done potentially fudging the prices. There is a quality that we bring in our observation and expertise that is un-programmable.
I ask this, who in the market would willingly buy Ai art?
Who, when informed, would actively cheer for art made with no soul, passion, or original style?
There is no great triumph in this creation. I believe a pencil and a thrown away napkin are more accessible than a laptop.
You may not hold value in art because you care not for the journey it took to get there, fine.
Surround yourself in recreations made by an unwilling committee. Tell us, after 25 years what value these images will hold for you. Or will you have gotten bored by the slop you made the first time, and just prompted another hundred to churn out what someone for a price could have figured out for you with more meaning and everlasting ingenuity.

iPhone 16e
This is a post about Apple products (iPhone) and technology. (Disclaimer for those who follow my blog and do not care for this sort of thing)
Hey! So for anyone new I use an iPhone 5s and have been doing so for the past 3 months. I downgraded from the iPhone 12 Pro for a breath of fresh air and because I find older technology more enjoyable. I don’t plan on upgrading soon and haven’t really been caught up with Apple until hearing about the iPhone 16e.
Where ever you turn online you hear people saying that they can’t recommend this iPhone to anyone, which, given the context, I understand.
I do not like the modern iPhones, I really dislike the design, and find them a bit too overwhelming however the iPhone 16e changes that. I freaking love the design and i think it’s a call back to the iPhone 4, which gives me hope for apples future products’ designs. I am still a sucker for older technology and can’t afford to upgrade anyway but I love this device. My iPhone 5s is still amazing however it’s hard to ignore the current lack of support for it nowadays. No whatsapp. No YouTube. (Are the most notable ones). I wouldn’t have to worry about that with a modern iPhone with a more “retro” design.
Anyway, as previously said I will not be getting it but if I could here are things I’d want it to have:
A headphone jack! This is a staple on my current phone I love it so much, I find dongles so clunky and annoying and the dedicated port is so nice.
I would want it to be smaller, the same dimensions as my 5s. I just can’t live with a big phone, I find them so uncomfortable to use and impractical.
Can we get the camera bump gone? This okay, how it is on the 16e is really great compared to the absurd camera bumps on the rest of the sixteens but I literally have no camera bump at the moment and it makes my iPhone super sleek I love it.
Of course no of this will happen but it’s nice to dream I guess haha
And that’s it! Yeah MagSafe might be nice but I don’t use wireless charging anyway, having usb c is just fine.

What are DFU Mode?
Device Firmware Update(DFU) is nothing but a mode that helps your iPhone turn back to normal condition after facing major software issues.
When you put your iPhone into DFU mode, it can jailbreak your iPhone, downgrade the iOS System, or un-jailbreak your device.
Why do we need to put our iPhone/iPad into DFU Mode in some situations
You won't feel the need to put the iPhone in DFU mode for fixing the small iPhone issues. Instead, you can use Recovery mode to fix minor issues like iPhone being stuck in a loop.
However, you may need to put the iPhone in DFU in the following situations.
• You can use DFU mode to downgrade the iOS version as you didn't like the latest iOS version.
• You can also jailbreak or un-jailbreak your device using DFU mode.
• DFU mode can also help you eradicate expired or old iPhone beta versions.
How to put your iPhone in DFU mode based on different models
For iPhone 8 or later
Step 1. First of all, you'll need to launch iTunes and try connecting the iOS device to your PC. Remember, you need to go with a high-quality lightning cable to avoid any scare.
Step 2. Hold the Power button for 3 seconds. Hold the Volume Down button while keep holding the Power button for 10 seconds.
Step 3. Release the Power button but keep holding the Volume Down button for 5 seconds. If the screen light but still keeps black, you've entered your iPhone into DFU mode successfully.
Tumblr media
For iPhone 7 and 7+
Step 1. After connecting iPhone to your Mac or Windows PC through a high-quality lightning cable, you'll need to launch iTunes.
Step 2. You need to turn your iPhone off if you've done yet.
Step 3. Click and hold the On/Off button for about 3 seconds. Then, click on the Home button while keep holding the On/Off button for 10 seconds.
Step 4. If the iPhone screen keeps black, you put your iPhone into DFU mode successfully.
Tumblr media
For iPhone 6 or earlier
Step 1. Connect iPhone to PC and launch iTunes before turning iPhone off.
Step 2. Click and hold the On/Off button for about 3 seconds. Then, click on the Home button while keep holding the On/Off button for 10 seconds.
Step 3. Release the On/Off button but keep holding the Home button for 5 more seconds.
Step 4. If the screen stays black, it means that you have put your iPhone into DFU mode.

iOS 17.6 is Out! - What's New?Apple enthusiasts, rejoice! iOS 17.6 has just been released to the public, and it's available worldwide for everyone using an iOS 17 supported device. This means that if you have an iPhone XS, XR, or any model up to the latest iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, you can now update your device. To install this update, simply go to your settings, then to General, and select Software Update. However, if you are on iOS 18 developer or public betas, you won't see this update since you are on a newer version. Downgrading to iOS 17 from iOS 18 will require a Mac or Windows computer, and you can find a separate video tutorial on how to do that in the description of the original video.Update Size and InstallationThe size of this update varies depending on your device and the version you're currently using. It can range from 1 GB to over 6 GB if it needs to fully reinstall the operating system. Now, let’s dive into what’s new in iOS 17.6.Key Updates and FeaturesSiri ImprovementsOne of the notable changes is in Siri’s settings. To find these, go to Privacy and Security, then Location Services, and scroll down to Siri. In the previous version, 17.5.1, the title read "Siri and Dictation," but now it simply says "Siri." Additionally, there is a new option to "Ask Next Time" or "When I Share" regarding location access. This update, though minor, reflects Apple's ongoing efforts to refine user experience.Find My EnhancementsIf you are using an iPad with Apple Pencil Pro on the latest iPad Pro or iPad Air versions, there's an update within the Find My app. You can now mark your Apple Pencil Pro as lost, which prevents others from adding it to their Apple ID if they find it. This feature provides extra security and helps return lost items to their owners.Beats IntegrationFor those using Beats products, new support features have been added. When you open your device near a Beats Pill, for instance, you’ll see new animations and additional features. There’s also an update that allows you to change the duration of press and hold on Beats under accessibility settings.MLS Season Pass and TV App UpdatesThe TV app now features updates specifically for MLS Season Pass subscribers. The main page has been updated to include League Cup information with standings. Additionally, if you go into an individual team, you’ll find more detailed information and interface changes. These updates enhance the viewing experience for sports fans.Photos AppIn the Photos app, the recently deleted section has a new message when you attempt to permanently delete a photo. It now clearly states that the action cannot be undone, ensuring users are fully aware that the photo will be irretrievably deleted.News App and Live ActivitiesWithin the News app, if you follow sports teams, a new update shows a live activity for upcoming events. This feature provides real-time updates on your home screen and lock screen using the dynamic island or live activity.Contactless PaymentsFor users in regions where contactless payments are supported, there's a new notification about changing the default app for your contactless payment card. This feature might primarily apply to the EU, reflecting regulatory changes.Messages and Apple WalletIn Messages, a new update informs you if a message is from an unknown international sender. Also, if you use Apple Wallet and have filed for bankruptcy, the app will notify you if your card is locked due to this status. This feature helps users manage their financial situations more effectively.Charging and Moisture DetectionA new message has been added to notify users if moisture or water is detected in the charging port. It advises disconnecting the charging cable and letting the port dry for a couple of hours. This detailed instruction helps prevent damage to the device.Podcasts and Legacy ContactsThe Podcasts app now features a splash screen highlighting the latest features, including transcripts and search capabilities. Additionally,
there are updates to the wording for setting up legacy contacts, making it clearer for users.Family SharingIn Family Sharing, there’s a new button to accept or decline sharing invitations. This updated interface simplifies the process and enhances usability.Bug Fixes and Performance ImprovementsThis update also addresses several bugs and improves performance:Storage Optimization: Many users have reported that iOS 17.6 frees up storage by clearing cache data.Notification Issues: Notification problems from previous betas have been resolved.Bluetooth Connectivity: Issues with Bluetooth headphone connectivity have been fixed.Alarm Bug: The alarm bug, which affected the sleep/wake alarm, seems to be resolved.Standby Mode: Issues with editing clock colors in standby mode have been fixed.Screen Time: Apple acknowledged screen time issues, which seem to be resolved in this update.Battery Life and Device Temperature: Reports suggest improved battery life and cooler device temperatures, even in warmer environments.Security UpdatesApple typically updates security patches shortly after releasing a new iOS version. For the latest security updates, keep an eye on Apple’s official website or check the linked description in the original video.BenchmarksiOS 17.6 shows impressive benchmark results. In Geekbench, it scored 2,927 for single-core and 7,337 for multi-core. These are some of the highest scores recorded for iOS 17, indicating significant performance improvements.Should You Install iOS 17.6?Yes, it’s highly recommended to install iOS 17.6 for the latest security updates and performance enhancements. Users have reported smoother performance and improved battery life, making it a worthwhile update. If you’ve discovered any new features in iOS 17.6, feel free to share them in the comments below. Dad got his new phone…
It wasn’t too long ago that I carried a simple candybar Nokia to work and it worked great for simple transport or meetup coordination. During the Covid years here in Malaysia, I had to upgrade to a smartphone to run MySejahtera, an outbreak checkpoint app that was used to enter shops and offices, as essential as a facemask.
Dad woke up to the wired world eventually, taking over my iPhone 7 while I downgraded to a Nokia c01 plus, partly for sentimental reasons. Here in Malaysia, we now need cashless payments called TnG eWallet, cashless parking, cashless food vouchers, e-driving licenses, and the list goes on. He’s also calling his family more often, keeping in touch as we all grow old. I sometimes message my close cousins as well, out of loneliness more than anything.
So his new phone is a midrange 5G Samsung a25 with a ton of storage, juice, and a huge OLED screen. One monolithic slab of electronics. Mom also got her Oppo’s call-no-voice issue solved while we were at the phone shop. It’s amazing how mandatorily wired the world is nowadays and how cheap telecommunication has become.
Tonight, I pared down my Android Go 11 to the bare minimum. It supports enabling and disabling apps. I replaced Chrome with Opera Mini and got rid of assistive AI among other things. Now I have ram to spare, to keep track of Shopee buys, and get the latest news.

Factors to Consider When You Opt Iphone 12 Rental Company
Tumblr media
The iPhone 12 remains a popular choice, offering a premium Apple experience without the flagship price tag. But what if you only need it for a short time? Renting an iPhone 12 can be a budget-friendly option for travel, temporary work needs, or trying out the phone before you buy. However, with various rental companies out there, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. Here's how to find the best iPhone 12 rental company for your needs:
Consider Rental Duration and Flexibility:
Rental Period: How long do you need the iPhone 12? Many companies offer daily, weekly, monthly, and even longer-term rentals. Look for companies with flexible durations that match your specific needs. Will you need to upgrade or downgrade your rental during the period? Some companies allow you to switch models if your needs change.
Price and Value:
Compare Rates: Rental prices can vary depending on the company, duration, and storage capacity. Get quotes from multiple companies to find the best deal. Beware of hidden fees like damage waivers, insurance, or return shipping costs. Factor these into your overall cost comparison.
Phone Condition and Selection:
Phone Quality: Ensure the company offers well-maintained, recent iPhone 12 models. Look for information on their cleaning and inspection procedures. Do they offer different storage capacities or colors to suit your preference? Considering all these factors will give you a chance to get the best iPhone on rent in the best conditions.
Customer Service and Reputation:
Read Reviews: Check online reviews and testimonials to see what other customers have experienced with the company's service, responsiveness, and return process. Does the company offer clear and accessible customer support in case of any issues during your rental period? All these will help you  rent an ipad mini or iPhone 12.
Additional Services:
Data Plans: Do you need a data plan included with your rental? Some companies offer bundled packages, while others require separate data plan purchases.
Accessories: See if the company offers rentals of accessories like cases, chargers, or portable power banks.
