How to Prepare for GATE & UPSC Engineering Services Exam (ESE)
Hello, future engineers! If you’re planning to crack the GATE or UPSC Engineering Services Exam (ESE), you probably already know these are two of the most competitive exams in India. Whether you’re studying at a reputed college of engineering and technology in Bhubaneswar or preparing on your own, success in these exams requires a mix of smart strategies, consistent effort, and the right resources. Let’s break down how you can ace these exams step by step.
Understanding the Exams
Before diving into preparation, it’s crucial to understand what these exams demand:
GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering): Primarily tests your technical knowledge in your engineering domain, along with general aptitude and mathematics. It is often used for M.Tech admissions and PSU jobs.
UPSC ESE (Engineering Services Exam): Focuses on both technical and non-technical aspects, including general studies, engineering aptitude, and subject-specific knowledge. It leads to prestigious government engineering roles.
Both exams are challenging but achievable with the right mindset and preparation plan.
Step-by-Step Preparation Strategy
1. Know the Syllabus Inside Out
Start by downloading the official syllabus for GATE or ESE. Break it down into manageable sections and identify overlapping topics if you’re preparing for both exams simultaneously. For example, subjects like fluid mechanics or thermodynamics are common across many streams.
2. Gather Quality Study Materials
Stick to one standard book per subject instead of juggling multiple resources. For GATE, books like “Strength of Materials” by R.K. Bansal or “Digital Logic” by Morris Mano are popular choices. For ESE, also include materials that cover general studies and current affairs.
3. Create a Study Plan
Divide your preparation into phases:
Phase 1: Complete the syllabus while making detailed notes.
Phase 2: Solve previous years’ question papers.
Phase 3: Take mock tests and revise thoroughly.
If you’re studying at an institution like NMIET in Bhubaneswar, make use of their well-equipped libraries and faculty guidance to plan your schedule effectively.
Tips for GATE Preparation
Focus on Core Subjects: GATE is more about depth than breadth. Concentrate on high-weightage topics like mathematics, control systems (for ECE/EE), or design (for mechanical).
Solve Previous Year Papers: This will help you understand the exam pattern and types of questions asked.
Take Mock Tests: Regular mock tests improve speed, accuracy, and time management. Analyze your performance after each test to identify weak areas.
Short Notes & Formulas: Keep a separate notebook for formulas and important concepts for quick revision before the exam.
Tips for ESE Preparation
Balance Technical & Non-Technical: Unlike GATE, ESE includes general studies and engineering aptitude sections. Dedicate time to topics like ethics, environment, and current affairs.
Practice Writing Descriptive Answers: The mains stage of ESE requires descriptive answers. Practice writing clear and concise solutions.
Revise Regularly: With such a vast syllabus, regular revision is key to retaining concepts.
Current Affairs & General Knowledge: Stay updated with national and international news relevant to engineering.
Common Preparation Tips for Both Exams
Time Management: Allocate specific hours daily for study, practice, and revision.
Consistency Over Intensity: Studying consistently every day is more effective than sporadic bursts of effort.
Stay Healthy: Don’t neglect your physical and mental health during preparation—exercise regularly and take breaks.
Role of Colleges in Preparation
If you’re enrolled in a college of engineering and technology in Bhubaneswar, leverage its resources to boost your preparation:
Many institutions like NMIET offer workshops or seminars on competitive exams.
Faculty members often guide students on tricky topics or provide insights into exam patterns.
Peer groups can be helpful for group discussions or sharing study materials.
Last-Minute Tips Before the Exam
Revise short notes instead of diving into new topics.
Solve mock tests under timed conditions to simulate the real exam environment.
Stay calm—confidence plays a huge role during the actual exam.
Why These Exams Are Worth It
Both GATE and ESE open doors to incredible opportunities:
GATE can lead to M.Tech programs at IITs/NITs or high-paying PSU jobs at companies like ONGC or IOCL.
ESE offers prestigious government roles with job security, respect, and opportunities to work on impactful projects.
Institutions like NMIET often emphasize preparing students not just academically but also professionally—making them ready for such competitive challenges.
Final Thoughts
Preparing for GATE or ESE isn’t just about hard work; it’s about working smartly with a clear strategy in mind. Whether you aim for research opportunities through GATE or dream of becoming an officer through ESE, stay focused and consistent in your efforts. And if you’re lucky enough to be studying at a reputed institution like NMIET or any other college of engineering and technology in Bhubaneswar, make full use of their resources—they can be game-changers in your journey! So gear up, start preparing today, and take one step closer to achieving your dreams!

How to Pass the GATE XE Exam: Succeed with Tried-and-True Methods.
The GATE XE (Engineering Sciences) paper is a rare chance for students hoping to get admission to esteemed universities such as IITs and IISc. GATE XE gives students the opportunity to focus on just two essential technical courses, providing a quicker route to success than other GATE examinations that call for attention to several disciplines. To pass the test, though, you must have the appropriate approach. This is a thorough tutorial that will help you ace the GATE XE exam.
1. Understand the GATE XE Paper Structure The GATE XE exam consists of three sections: Section A (Engineering Mathematics): This is a compulsory section and accounts for 15% of the total marks. Section B (Optional Subjects): You can choose two subjects from seven options: Fluid Mechanics (XE-B), Materials Science (XE-C), Solid Mechanics (XE-D), Thermodynamics (XE-E), Polymer Science and Engineering (XE-F), Food Technology (XE-G), and Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (XE-H). Each of these sections makes up 70% of the total marks. General Aptitude (GA): Common to all GATE papers, the GA section contributes 15% to the total score. Before you begin preparation, thoroughly understand the syllabus and exam pattern. This will help you tailor your study plan according to the subjects that best align with your strengths.
2. Pick the Appropriate Optional Subjects The elective courses you select might have a big impact on your grade. Choose topics in which you are deeply interested and where your foundation is solid. Although it may be tempting to select courses that seem simple, it is better to select those where, considering your knowledge and experience, you may achieve good marks. For example, select Fluid Mechanics or Thermodynamics if you have a solid foundation in these areas for targeted preparation.
3. Create a Targeted Study Schedule A well-organized study schedule is necessary to effectively cover the extensive material. Divide the time you spend studying into three parts:
Phase of Foundation: Establish a solid foundation in Engineering Mathematics and the electives you have selected. To dispel uncertainties, start by comprehending the principles and then go through instances. Practice Phase: After you understand the fundamentals, start answering questions from past exams and practice exams. This will assist you in acclimating to the exam's format and comprehending the degree of difficulty of the questions. Final Phase: Edit your notes and pay attention to any areas that need improvement. Make sure you spend enough time studying engineering mathematics because it's essential to getting good grades.
4. Complete the Question Papers from Last Year Solving last year's question papers is one of the finest strategies to be ready for GATE XE. You'll get a sense of the key subjects and question trends by practicing. Additionally, it will help you become more adept at managing your time throughout the test. You can become more used to the diversity and degree of difficulty of the questions with regular practice. You may focus your preparation by identifying recurring themes that come up year after year.
5. Stress accuracy and time management GATE XE assesses not just your knowledge but also your time management and accuracy skills. Multiple-choice (MCQ), multiple-select (MSQ), and numerical answer type (NAT) questions are all included in this study. Each of these requires a different approach:
For MCQs, ensure you avoid negative marking by answering only those you are sure about. For NAT questions, practice mental calculations to avoid wasting time on lengthy calculations. MSQs have no negative marking, but don’t rely on guesswork as all options need to be correct for full marks.
6. Make Use of Test Series and Online Resources For those preparing for the GATE XE, online platforms offer good information. Through forums, practice exams, and video lectures, they can help you get your questions answered and stay up to speed on the most recent exam trends. Participating in a test series is very helpful as it allows you to experience an exam in real time and helps you discover your areas of weakness.
7. Remain Motivated and Consistent When studying for a competitive test such as the GATE, consistency is essential. Maintain a consistent study schedule, evaluate your progress frequently, and maintain your motivation as you become ready. Join study groups or online discussion boards to talk with other candidates about your questions and share your expertise. This can help you stay motivated in addition to helping to clarify topics.
8. Take Care of Your Health and Well-Being Lastly, remember to look after your physical and emotional well-being. You may maintain your attention while preparing by taking regular pauses, getting enough sleep, and eating a healthy diet. Exam preparation sometimes causes stress and worry, but keeping a calm head helps improve performance and memory.
In summary Strong principles, regular practice, and a strategic approach are all need to pass the GATE XE exam. You may pass the GATE XE test and get into a prominent university by concentrating on the proper subjects, finishing last year's exams, spending your time wisely, and keeping an optimistic outlook.

Remember that there is no one-size-fits-all answer to which course is best for GATE preparation — it depends on your individual learning style, schedule constraints, and level of self-discipline.
Regardless of the course you choose, consistency in studying and solving previous years’ question papers is key! So weigh your options carefully before making a decision that aligns with your goals and preferences.
Can I crack GATE without coaching?
One of the common questions that aspiring GATE candidates have is whether it is possible to crack the exam without joining a coaching institute. The answer to this question is yes, it is entirely possible to crack GATE without coaching. However, it requires a lot of self-discipline, dedication, and effective study strategies.
Self-study plays a crucial role in preparing for any competitive exam, including GATE. Many successful candidates have achieved remarkable results by studying on their own. However, cracking GATE without coaching requires meticulous planning and an organized approach towards your studies. You need to create a proper study schedule that covers all the subjects and topics within the given time frame. Additionally, solving previous years’ question papers and taking mock tests regularly will help you gauge your strengths and weaknesses.
While self-study may be sufficient for some individuals with strong determination and discipline, joining a good coaching institute can provide additional benefits such as structured guidance from experienced faculty members who are well-versed with the intricacies of the exam pattern.
Cracking GATE without coaching is possible but demands rigorous self-study coupled with consistent practice. It’s essential to identify your learning style and choose a method that suits you best — whether it’s through self-preparation or by seeking guidance from professionals at reputed institutes like GATEFORUM in Chandigarh
Is 3 months enough for GATE preparation?
Is 3 months enough for GATE preparation? This is a common question among aspiring GATE candidates who are short on time. While it may seem like a daunting task to prepare for such a competitive exam in just three months, it is certainly possible with the right strategy and dedication.
It’s important to understand that the effectiveness of your preparation depends on how efficiently you utilize those three months. It’s not about the quantity of time spent studying, but rather the quality of your study sessions. With focused and consistent efforts, you can cover all the necessary topics and revise them thoroughly.
To make the most out of your limited time, create a well-structured study plan that includes daily targets and milestones. Identify your strengths and weaknesses early on so that you can allocate more time to challenging subjects while revising familiar ones. Utilize online resources, mock tests, and previous year papers to assess your progress regularly.

Imagine Hinata or Kageyama or both with a s/o who can rival Yachi and Tsukishima in school and tutors them. S/o teases them profusely about their marks but is also failing one class of her own without the others knowledge. So when they ask her to come with them to hangout with them over summer break and s/o lies poorly about going away, they find out she has to take a remedial class.
I love this because I know both boys would be so sweet about it. I decided to go with Hinata.
The numbers spin on the blank page in front of him and Hinata slumps down until his head hits the table with a thud. You lightly nudge him with your pencil. “Come on, Shouyou. These problems aren’t going to solve themselves. We can’t have you failing another exam can we?”Hinata pouts at you for pressing salt into his wounds, but he listens to you and sits ups, brows furrowed in concentration as he jots down calculations.
He could do without all your relentless teasing about his incredibly low aptitude for math, but he’s incredibly grateful that you’ve been so patient and kind, sitting with him session after study session, unwinding the knots in his head as he struggles to understand the gibberish in his notebook. He knows he’s not the fastest learner and he knows it must feel like he takes two steps backwards and one step forward and yet, here you still are, happily guiding him and still letting an idiot like him call you his girlfriend.
The joint studying continues until you see your tangerine boyfriend leaping towards you, his exam proudly displayed for everyone to see. He’s barely passed. Really, if he had gotten even one more question wrong, things would have turned out differently, but it didn’t and you’ve teased him enough over the past few months, so you just beam at him and pull him in for a huge congratulatory embrace. Plus, it’s not like you have any right to say anything, not with your crumpled exam hidden at the bottom of your backpack.
Hinata excitedly swings your entwined hands, blabbering on and on about what fun dates the two of you can go on now that you’re both free this summer break and you cringe, already trying to come up with excuses as to why you wouldn’t be free most mornings. But you sigh in relief when Hinata tells you he has volleyball practices in the mornings still, so he’d hang out with you in the afternoons and evenings.
It’s the first day of summer break that Hinata doesn’t have volleyball practice, the coaches urging the kids to take off for the week and to fully enjoy a bit of their summer break, and he excitedly jumps out of bed and practically bolts to your house. He knows he should call or text you to see if you’re even up yet, but good manners fly out the window in his haste to see you and he finds himself knocking on your door. He politely greets your mom who opens the door, but she looks at him strangely when he asks if you’re awake.
“Oh, she didn’t tell you? She needs to take extra classes since she failed her history exam.”
Shock lances through Hinata and he barely stammers out a goodbye when your mom bids him farewell and closes the door. How could you have failed an exam that even he passed? Why didn’t you tell him? Why didn’t you tell him you were taking extra classes? Shock turns into hurt and he stubbornly waits for you outside the school gates, determined to get some answers.
You sigh as you pack your bag and exit the school building. You couldn’t wait to put all your stuff down and hang out with Hinata for the rest of the day, but you freeze when you see a familiar figure make its way towards you. Why was he here? Did he know? No, impossible. You plaster a smile as he draws near asking him what he was doing here and explaining that you were just returning a school textbook you didn’t realize you still had at home, but you go silent when you feel the hurt and anger radiating off of him.
“Why did you lie to me? Why are you still lying to me?”
Guilt and embarrassment wash over you and you look at the ground in shame as he insistently repeats his questions until you can’t take it anymore.
“I was embarrassed, Shouyou! You always talk about how smart I am and I was afraid if you knew that I was failing history, you wouldn’t like me anymore.”
Silence stretches between the two of you and you’re prepared for your boyfriend to end everything, but you’re stunned by a warm body hugging yours tightly and you can’t stop the tears that fall as you cry into Hinata’s chest. Only when your sobs subside does he pull away and grin at you.
“I don’t just like you because you’re smart. I like you because you’re you! I’m upset you didn’t feel comfortable enough to tell me that you were struggling with something, but it doesn’t change how I feel about you. It just means I finally get to help you with something instead of you always tutoring me.”
You snort and give him a watery smile. “Your history grades aren’t THAT much better than mine, Shouyou.” He grabs your hand and the two of you begin to walk to your home. “They’re good enough that I didn’t fail my exam.” You playfully smack him for his taunting words, but you grin as warmth blooms within you. Warmth from being loved. Warmth from not needing to hide anymore. Warmth from being fully accepted.
