Using Stories To Influence People

I found a mentor, a man named Ed Lawson. I write about him in my book. He was known as the California Walkman. He was a great civil rights leader of his time and Ed was a black man coming up in the 60s and 70s and he would constantly get harassed by the police. This is before Black Lives Matters. This is before all that kind of stuff and he took the police department to the supreme court by himself. He's not an attorney. 

He was just a guy who believed in justice and fairness and when I met him, he had gone through all that. He had won a supreme court case and he had decided that he was going to mentor some young people and there I was. And I was mentored by him for a period of time and he really shifted my view on the world and taught me a lot about how the world works, how business works, how deals are conducted. 

But most importantly how to influence people and he was more than anybody I've ever met to this date. A master of influence. He was a master storyteller and if you can master those two qualities, it doesn't really matter where you are, what you have, what resources are available to you because everything in life involves one person giving something to another person. So if you hold the tool of influence and if you can do that through storytelling, the most impactful form of influence, there's nothing that can stop you.

Strive For Self-Improvement To Move Ahead In Life

It's amazing when it comes to things like books or audio books or programs you know, like, I've got my book there. I spent years writing, years living writing and perfecting that and you can buy it for like 20 bucks, right or you can buy Tony Robbins book for 20 bucks, 15 bucks or 10 bucks and take away all this amazing knowledge, all this amazing information for people. But most people don't do it. Most people will spend their time just watching. They'll spend their time watching Netflix and nothing wrong with that. I like Netflix. 

I like watching HBO. I love doing all that stuff but if you don't have the personal development down, if you are not constantly working on yourself, if you are not constantly consuming information for the betterment of your human organism, you will not improve. If we do not move forward, we die and that's the thing I want people to remember. And I make this point. It's one of my favorite. One of my favorite quotes is while you are sleeping, your enemies are planning your demise and it's funny but if you look throughout history, it's true. 

Every great leader, every great civilization, there's always somebody waiting on the wings just waiting for you to drop the ball a little bit. So you have to be ahead of the curve. You have to be way out there ahead. You look at people like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos. I mean they're sending rockets to the moon. They don't care. They're way ahead of the rest of us. No one's out serpent them and similarly in your own business in your own life, you always have to be doing more than you think you need to be doing in order to just stay on pace.

▶ Video Transcript: I was 15 years old thinking I want to find wealth, fortune all the great things that America offers. Books were my friends. I read books by Napoleon Hill, books by Og Mandino, all the great old-time writers of that time. I read Tony Robbins and Wayne Dyer and all the personal development guys. This other guy named Stuart Wilde. I read his books and I thought, man, you know what? I'm I'm gonna leave home and I left home. I left and I was sleeping at that time in abandoned buildings or buildings that were under construction. Los Angeles was in a huge building boom at that time.

So I realized that I could get into these buildings late at night when the brokers weren't in there, wake up in the morning before they got there and I'd be out and I'd be living in luxury houses, maybe there wasn't electricity or water in those days in some of the places because they weren't built yet but it was a safe place to lay my head and subsequent to that I realized that there was a big electronic music scene. I had found a mentor, a guy who had agreed to take me under his wing and he was very familiar with the electronic music scene, the rave scene, the dance scene. So I got involved in that. I started throwing some clubs to make a little bit of extra money. I was still sleeping wherever I could lay my head and I remember that I would sleep behind the speakers, most people don't know this. In front of speakers, very loud, very hard to sleep. Behind speakers, super quiet and very warm. So I would sleep behind the speakers. I would wake up the club, would still be going on and I started looking around thinking how is the money being made in these places to realize only that it was by the drug dealers.
