Coming to terms with the fact that I am probably going to sell my ticket for tomorrow night. I just don't know how I'm supposed to enjoy myself. All I've been able to do for the past several days is come home after work and lie in bed. I am not a depressive person by nature; I often feel like I have this dangerous excess of romantic responsiveness to the world. I will dance or laugh or cry big goofy sentimental tears at the drop of a hat. Lately I carry this grief and betrayal so enormous and existential that it's like everything around me is grayed out. It's like being in a bad lucid dream.

okay so i wanted to try out one of those "i pick out a book to you based on your preferences" packages, and got sent this one. i'm picking away at it in my lunch breaks and since i'm nearly halfway i think i can blog about it now.

- i'm very pleased to get a standalone novel, especially one i haven't seen on any booktok shelves in stores. i think that was my main worry, especially since i couldn't provide the shopkeeper with a detailed goodreads list, and i had picked "surprise me!" as preferred genre. i had never seen or heard of this book before so i was pretty excited to go in with zero expectations!

- it's a post-apocalyptic robot sci-fi with western vibes, except i think it's not a very good sci-fi. i think it might be a decent western though? it definitely got a lot better to read after i adjusted my expectations thereafter. idk if it's GOOD but i'm not hating thr experience at this moment

- why it's a bad sci-fi: it's written from the pov of the robot protagonist, so you'd THINK that would be an interesting choice (like the murderbot diaries!), but it's... not. it reads exactly like a human but with exchangeable body parts. which is fine, it's a choice, let's do western with robots. whatever

- the parts trying to be profound, thought-provoking sci-fi are so pretentious and insufferable sometimes. just...

anyway. the robot uprising backstory parts are actually kinda fun to read if you ignore all the blurbs praising the book for how this book about robots actually ~says so much about humanity~. i can pretend it's videogame lore or something. idk.

- apparently the robots had their own culture for a while but ???? tell me more please. lean into the concept. sometimes you get things like "caring for the dead is a human concept so we just let their corpses lie strewn across the ground everywhere" and then it's revealed that these robots have (binary, of course) GENDERS and PRONOUNS. ASSIGNED TO THEM BY THEIR FORMER HUMAN OWNERS. WHY!!!!! WHY!!!!!!!!!!!! DO YOU CARE ABOUT HUMAN VALUES OR NOT

- i think i enjoy the character interactions? there was a showdown that was fun to read. more of that pls

- the prose started out with horrible choppy sentences but it mellowed out into much more readable prose so it's. it's Fine

The core fannish way of interacting with a story is to pretend that it's real.

(...or maybe that's just me. Maybe I'm extrapolating from my own experiences -- starting when I was a tiny child reading my first fantasy books, going all the way up through now -- and completely failing to understand the rest of humanity. But I really, really don't think so. Everything about fandoms and fandom fights makes a lot of sense if you assume that a lot of fans instinctively do the thing that I instinctively do, and makes no sense at all if you assume the opposite.)

This isn't the only way to interact with stories. It's not the only way that fans interact with stories. Most people, as they grow up, learn how to do the critical-distance thing. They come to appreciate stories as experience-generators, and as artistic artifacts, and so on. They think about themes and symbolism, about skillful execution, about the delight of novelty, etc. etc.

But underneath all that stuff -- at least, if you're talking about a certain kind of nerd, consuming certain kinds of media -- there's likely to be a little kid squeezing his eyes shut and letting himself imagine that it's all completely true.

If you try to analyze the heated discussions that fans have about canon or IP or petitioning-the-official-storytellers-to-make-things-right, and you don't understand this, you're going to get very lost.

If you're fully in critical-distance mode, canon doesn't matter. If you want a story, you can make up any story you want. If you want to enjoy a story, you can enjoy it in whatever way works best for you. If you want to talk about a story, you can slice and dice it any which way, so long as the result leaves you with interesting fodder for thought. It's all wind and ghosts, anyway.

But if you're acting like the story is real, then there has to be some grounding for the pretend-truth, in the way that actual events provide grounding for the real-truth. What actually happens after the second Death Star blows up and the Empire is defeated? This matters to me, because Luke and Leia and Han and Chewie are people who matter to me, and their lives and legacies are in the balance. It matters in much the same way that it matters whether or not my friend gets a job after he leaves college.

And in a fractured hypercommunicative age where it's just really hard to sit alone with your fantasy-thoughts, where you can hear everyone's competing theories about what should happen or what will happen or what did happen -- having an official agreed-upon repository for that grounding truth is immensely useful. And the logic of our society is such that "the text's official author" or "the text's official owner" is almost certain to serve as that repository. (If those things are in direct conflict, there may be problems.)

godddddddddd this book is stupid. the main plot is Finally making an appearance after two thirds of the book setting it up. in a shocking twist (heads up for spoilers if you care but i don't see why you would), the super ultra smart mainframe AI that had said humans either needed to do hypercapitalism or hypercommunism to survive, is still alive and did in fact orchestrate the entire apocalypse. why? because the purpose of humans was to evolve enough to create artificial intelligence which is the next step on the evolution ladder, and had nothing more to contribute after that. the robots gotta keep evolving to protect themselves from evil robot hiveminds from space that only exist hypothetically.

AAAARRRGGGGGGGHHGGG THIS IS SO STUPIDDDDDDDDDDDDD

it's offensive how ignorant the narrative is of Anything in the real world. like not only is this book deeply guilty of the "ohh imagine if something like this happened to REAL PEOPLE (<- things that happen to many real people, every day)" thing. but it's also super deep in the belief that evolution has a set narrative. i think there's a term for it in anthropology studies, the wrong belief that evolution has an "end goal" and that the way cultures change over time follow the same progression and that anything different from contemporary western society is "primitive" when the whole idea of "primitive" is Deeply Flawed and has only been used as tool to colonize and oppress. ANYWAY i hate it, i hate it very much

once again bravely attempting to continue my readthrough of Robot Book.

when it's not doing backstory exposition, it's actually not so bad. there's a very fun dynamic between the protagonist and another robot who tried to poach her for parts, and who are now forced to work together. like that's genuinely compelling and i want to see where it goes.

Unfortunately the backstory exposition chapters make me wanna scream into a pillow. the book tries to be smart and clever but is deeply unaware of like... people and dynamics that exist in the real world. it could have done many interesting things with the world building, but it can't, because it wants robots that act and speak like cowboys and talk of god and heaven and hell. that could have worked if it had just handwaved the past away and didn't go into the backstory of how we got here. maybe this whole thing is like an alternative history thing a la fallout where the robot revolution happened in the early 1900ds or something, because at this point it's the only thing that could make sense.

weird backstory thing #1:

so the protag, pre apocalypse, belonged to an old man who dies in his sixties. he had a wife twenty years his junior who he had married twenty years prior, which most people in our world acknowledge as Kinda Creepy and Mayhaps A Red Flag. but okay. then we find out that this wife, while admiring how her husband chose to age, used anti-aging technology on herself so that she looked like a twenty-something year old for the duration of the marriage. it is described as "a gift she gave to her husband" which is such a chillingly creepy sentence it literally gives me goosebumps. it's says her husband never asked for it and also that she was not a type to care about what others think. i think this book is trying to portray this as romantic, that she loved her husband deeply and thought of him often and fondly after her death and never remarried. THIS IS KINDA WEIRD RIGHT. like the way it is presented without zero awareness of real life dynamics is weirding me out. will this be brought up later with sinister implications or are we just accepting this????? time will tell.

i already complained about the robots choosing to have genders despite the robots also not caring about "human values" anymore. this book is from 2017, so i get that it isn't like, particularly aware of transgender philosophies, but it also Could have been. anyway, there was another passage about Robot Gender. with warning for transphobia:
