ooooo this got a bit long! "I'm not enough for you," he says, when the wine can no longer subdue his wroth. Helaena looks back at him, fingers fidgeting together from across the room. She called the maids to take the children as he entered. Perhaps not unfairly, for he nearly stumbled over Jaehaerys as he tried to bend down to him, but all the same hurtful. "You are not well," Helaena answers quietly. Not well, she tells him. Never have I ever been well. "Not well enough for any of you," he answers defiantly. "You, or mother, or Aemond, or grandsire. Certainly not father; though that is a sin we can share, we all." The spite on his tongue is not one that he used against her. What was there to blame her for, when he knew he would never measure up anyway? Even if they talked about it, what could she do but lie to his face, if she chose kindness? She's just as likely to simply nod, and keep him far away from herself, like mother.

His sister bites her lips and holds her fingers. "That is true," she says, and he looks down, running a hand through his hair. He knew it, yet still. Her steps echo in the room, and he thinks she'll leave but tentatively, she comes closer. "We were never well enough." He looks up to her. She tries to keep her gaze on him. "There's a sin to being born the wrong sort," she says. "You a drunken fool and I of a simple mind," she wavers then, some tears pooling on her lash lines. Aegon falters. Why did he open this discussion; he can't even help his own children in this court; and they have no lands to inherit from him to change their fate. His own sister suffered him as a husband; at least other sisterwives have got to become queens. Not she, not Helaena; all she could do was stay beside him as if he had any power to protect her.

He can't do anything; powerless he felt, powerless he cemented himself. He can't say sorry, because otherwise, how could he look to her face? "Isolating ourselves is easier," she says finally. "For all of us," she empahsizes, bringing her hand to his shoulder. "But if I am not alone in my loneliness and fears, if I am not alone in feeling this way, I beg you; show me." She says, takes the water pitcher on the table, and puts it in front of him. His mind might be hazy, but not enough to miss the plea in her eyes. Isolated in their loneliness, the two of them were. And he fears, he truly fears, that if he tries he could still not measure up; but he doesn't want to be alone, either. "Where's my cup?" he asks, holding onto the pitcher. "Maybe we should go to supper, anyway." Her hand falls from his shoulders as she smiles slightly, sniffing her tears away. He takes it in his. "Help me up," he asks. Helaena doesn't miss the plead in his eyes, either, as she nods. "Of course."

Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel

A feminist retelling inspired by the Ramayana, focusing on Rama's step-mother figure, Kaikeyi. Most of the novel focuses on Kaikeyi's early years as opposed to strictly following the story of the Ramayana, Rama and Sita don't even show up until the later half of the novel and explores what shapes Kaikeyi's character and drives her to do the act for which she is forever remembered in infamy.

I should preface that I don't know much of the Ramayana. I watched Sita Sings the Blues years and years ago, but it obviously took some liberties with the source material. And I'm cognizant of the fact that this story is akin to scriptures to some, so I was eager to read a take by a Hindi author.

To prep myself for the story, I just did a quick wiki search on the figure of Kaikeyi and was surprised to see that at the end of her story, Rama forgives her when he returns from exile, which is a marked departure from Western treatment of the evil stepmother figure in folklore. The book wastes no time in setting up that Kaikeyi is not an "evil" or malicious figure from the beginning to the end, but she's akin to a cosmic plaything so often found in classical mythology like Oedipus. Like Oedipus, she's fated to commit the horrific act of betrayal (the banishment of Rama) by the gods, who conversely withhold any blessings, help, or guidance from her precisely because she's going to betray Rama. The cards are stacked against her from the beginning, much like her own mother who was banished for failing her father's impossible test.

I also appreciated Kaikeyi is an ace protagonist, which I haven't really seen in much YA. It takes away the sexual dimension with which to malign her, and put emphasis on her mutual respect and friendship with her husband (until Rama's influences overtakes him, that is). And she's explicitly set up as Rama's mother, not his stepmother, as the sisterhood of Dashareth's sisterwives take equal ownership of each others' sons. You really do get a sense that she wouldn't have chosen to exile Rama without good reason to.

All-in-all, it's a fairly effective retelling from Kaikeyi's perspective that matches the beats of the original story but isn't afraid to add its own embellishments. A lot of the blame is placed on destiny and Rama's own divinity that he didn't know how to wield, but if there's a villain at all, it's the conservative religious figures who ignore the value of progress and maintain the status quo. Ironically, we're ultimately shown they are right, Rama is meant to cleanse the world of evil, but the blame rather lies in giving him such narrow instruction that he fails to see the world beyond his own perceived glorious purpose. We never do get to see Rama's return, but she's forgiven by the rest of her family save her husband.

Aj and her sisters were heading out when they heard a voice behind them “So that’s it, then? You’re out?” They turned around to see their mother Jayne looking at them sadly. “I’m afraid so Mother. It’s the only way I can keep my girls safe. And I can’t stand living with Charlene and Nina anymore. I just can’t.” Aj had told Greyson how Nina and Charlene had treated her children and all they were sentenced to was a parenting class? 

It dawned on Jayne who Aj was walking with. “Becca-Dawn is that you? When did you leave? Oh, you all look so beautiful and grown-up.” Jayne exclaimed through tears. “It’s been years. Look at you, you’re a woman! I am so so sorry I couldn’t protect you.” “Hello mother.” Said Becca, unprepared for this interaction. “Are you alright? Are you married do you have children?” Jayne fired off questions. Becca, wide-eyed and weepy blurted out “No just a cat.” Before being squeezed by her sobbing mom.

Jayne sat down at a picnic table, Aj, Teresa and Becca-Dawn followed suit. Penny hung back looking nervous. “It’s been so good to see you all.” She said. Teresa offered to exchange phone numbers but Jayne refused saying “Oh no, I couldn’t do that. I can’t afford to get in trouble, you know...” Teresa was crushed but dropped the subject. “Don’t worry about me, I’ll be alright. I have my sisterwives and grandchildren and Rachel and Farrah. I’m a wonderful gardener, I can be of use to the Lord.” 

Jayne stopped for a moment when noticed Penny loitering behind them. She wordlessly opened her arms for a hug. Penny considered her for a moment, her mind surging with emotions. She knew that Jayne initially blamed her for shaming and breaking up he family. Yet here she was smiling kindly, had enough time passed? She couldn’t hold out for long though before hugging her and bursting into tears. “Mama.”

The little family sat at the picnic table for what felt like hours exchanging “I love yous,” stories, apologies and tears. Jayne was still unshakeable in her faith. She was sure things would get better now that the men were in jail and the children were being returned. Each girl made sure to hug her several times. 

Eventually the waiting car honked its horn. The sun had started to set. Jayne looked remorseful “I have to go now. But remember, I love you all and I’m proud of you.” As they watched their mother run to the car, they knew this would likely be the last time they’d see her. They watched the car until it disappeared around a corner.

“Well I guess it’s time to go back to the hotel?” Asked Becca. By now all four of them had tears streaming down their faces. “Um, I’m gonna stay here for a bit. I just need some air.” Said Penny. She wandered the courthouse grounds battling feelings of guilt and grief. Eventually she realized the wasn’t alone.

“Rough day?” She asked sitting down next to Greyson. “For you or me?” He said sounding miserable. “They didn’t even notice me.” He sounded like he was on the verge of tears. “My mother, my sisters. It’s like they don’t even know who I am.” Penny was taken aback, in all the chaos of the raid she’d forgotten why Greyson Caliente was so passionate about bringing the FCSU to justice.

 Greyson Caliente was the son of Nia and her first husband, Flamenco. Dina and Nina were his full sisters. Greyson had been left with his father when his mother and sisters were taken and reassigned to Elden Brown. He hadn’t seen them in decades and thought he might be able to make contact after the trial as Penny had done with her family. Unfortunately even if they recognized him they were too angry that he prosecuting the FCSU to acknowledge him.

“I am so sorry. I used to know Nina pretty well. Want to hear some stories about her?” Penny said gently, trying to make him feel better. The two sat there for hours discussing their experiences as apostates and the impact it had on their psyches and their families. They found they had a lot in common in terms of coping mechanisms. Penny with her music and Greyson with his athleticism. By the time the sun started to come up they were lying on the dewy grass, looking for answers in the starry sky.
