Fully understanding that it is not your job to educate every single hearing person that wants to ask you questions about being deaf/hoh, I totally accept if you don't have the time or energy to respond to my question. If that's the case, I hope you have a great day! I found your blog via you being credited on the fic A Soul's Challenge because I also love the deaf Bakugo trope!

That being said, I'm currently writing an original story where I've decided to include a deaf/hoh character and I'm wondering if you would be able to point me in the direction of any educational materials I can use to write him correctly and respectfully? Or, if nothing else, any of your favorite Bakugo fanfictions that treat his deafness particularly well that I can learn from?

(Okay, I may also just be fishing for fic recs because, well, I do love me the blastie boi)

Hey! I'm sorry for the probably late reply. My messages... never tell me when I have them. (I'm told it is a common problem) I am more than happy to chat with you via dm's to help provide information. But let me say now, there is no one solid way to write your character correctly. It will vastly depend on a number of factors. If you are looking for a fun resource book I can recommend a book titled "for hearing people only"

But even this is just a general guide. (I have this book and I am Deaf myself. But not all Deaf experiences are the same. So it was still useful for me)

Factors to consider for you character include,

Us this a fantasy world or a real world. Do their parents know sign language. Do they know sign language? Do hearing aids or cochlear exist in your world? Did they attend a Deaf institute, were the mainstreamed, or fully homeschooled? This plus more factors into your portrayal just to begin. But I can tell you right now, if your Deaf person cannot hear well enough to communicate verbally, do not give them some magical aid that allows them to suddenly communicate perfectly. That just erases the fact that hearing loss IS a disability. (Though we prefer not to call it that. It is a culture.) But in the context here as a hearing person you must be aware of the things that it affects and that you can't magic them away or you will be written off as bad rep. Read through my blog there is a variety of writing advice there. Also, if you can get a copy, I enjoyed this fantasy story of a Deaf medieval character,

It was given to me by my ASL teacher when I despaired over reading material that understood what I was going through. (Bless her) a fascinating look into what it might be like in a fantasy setting. Look for art and stories by Deaf people and read it, look at it. Try to understand the grief and the pain and the struggle and the joy and the delay. Then when you write a scene, ask someone in the community, preferably who is similar to the circumstances you are writing, read over it and give feedback. I've studied Deafness from a medical, psychological, governmental and cultural angle. I know a lot. But not everything.

I have a Deaf Bakugou fic rec list somewhere on my page. If I find it I will reblog it again. But I haven't read any of the current stuff. I'm a year behind! Check out my fic on Ao3 though if you want an insight for disasters! (In America lol)

yo this is completely random, but i just want you to know, i happened to see the post about writing a ventus and roxas fic and hi, im the author or AAR, i would 1000% leave a like a long comment on such a fic. it's 1 am and im very reminiscent on things rn, just thought id pass this along <3

oh my gosh! hi! this is so so sweet, AAR was SUCH a huge inspiration for me when it came out. it's actually the whole reason i started an a03, aaaand i think it might've been what encouraged me to start writing on my tumblr! oh man, i remember back in 2019, writing a roxas and ventus fic after reading AAR. BOY is it old, eheh... aaand i definitely see ven and roxas differently from then, not really into the whole "they see each other as brothers" angle anymore. anyhoo, im, like, SO honored you popped in to say hi?? this is like. SO sweet. i definitely need to re-read AAR again. oooh man apologies that this reply gets long, i'm just a bit excited! i love talking to people about these two...

Here's my ao3. You might notice i have a few Ventus and Roxas ship fics, which i TOTALLY understand isn't for everyone. i mostly write non-shippy stuff about them, anyways. I usually tag friendship posts about Ventus and Roxas . I even write headcanons about their friendship from time to time! heh, i'm kinda sitting on this unfinished ven and rox friendship fic right now. i'm definitely gonna finish it *eventually*-- but hell, maybe i'll just link the wip here lol

YAY! so I was tagged by the wonderful @typicalopposite - I totally thought i was gonna get to this sooner but alas the day slipped away from me

So I guess some words from my RWRB College AU are in order - side note: this now exceeds 10,000 words for the main part (and still has a good chunk to go) this is def gonna be the longest thing I've written in a while (YIKES!!)

They stay in that moment, just looking at one another, neither of them speaking or making a move to break the tension that has built up. When Alex smiles at him, Henry moves towards the table and takes the seat next to him, glad that they are in the most remote corner of the library right now in case he bollocks this whole thing up. Usually, he would be in the one across from him, but if he’s going to be brave about this, he wants to be closer to Alex. Alex, who, if he overheard correctly, at the very least, likes him quite possibly more, maybe as besotted as Henry is with him. The first part should have at least been evident with all the time they had been spending together, but for all that, everyone says, Alex is oblivious; Henry’s not been much better in this situation. He’s brought from his thoughts by the whispered “Henry” that escapes between Alex’s lips. “Alex, I’m….I don’t know where to start, but I dare say an ‘I’m sorry’ is not nearly enough.” The befuddled look that takes over Alex’s eyes perplexes Henry, but before he can finish speaking, Alex is. “Huh? Henry, what are you apologizing for? I thought it was me that needed to.” “Well, last I checked, I was the one who disrupted our routine because I couldn’t handle my own feelings,” Henry knows he’s going to have to make those feelings clear very soon; he just needs a moment to do so. “But….I was the one who took everything too far. Isn’t that why you’ve not been around? I know you didn’t ask for me to be on you like a salivating puppy at the bar or the diner that night. I want to ask whether the copies that were posted on someone's weibo claiming that the physical copy comes with extra chapters with more sex scenes? Is it real? I haven't seen them myself yet but I've heard they sound like an Ao3 fanfic. Do they really come with the physical copy or is it just a rumor?

No worries :) you’re not. 

I can’t say for sure if it’s original or not, to be honest. it comes in a physical PIRATED copy, that’s important to note. next, the AO3 comment on that Weibo post isn’t accurate. It just seems like a person disagreeing and using a point that’s hard to prove because AO3 is blocked. I’ve read every single TYK fic in AO3 when the drama was launched i was (so thirsty for fic! so I have a fresh memory regarding the actual TYK fics (novel, not drama fans tagging everything under the sun) and I also checked AO3 after the comment.

very long answer, hiding behind a cut so people who aren’t interested don’t get a wall of text. 

I’ve also read TYK porn on AO3 when I first finished the novel. It’s basically my go-to habit? Finish reading a Priest novel, go on AO3 to look for fan-written missing sex scenes to fill in the gaps. This wasn’t as recent (last year) but I’m fairly sure I did not read these fic before either. This isn’t to say that it can’t be fic of course, just that I didn’t find it on AO3. 

Next, TYK is actually one of Priest’s earlier novels and it was never really that popular. so there were never that many editions printed (TW and CN once each if I recall correctly). This version is definitely pirated, but it doesn’t mean everything in it is fake. The thing is, because TYK was never really very popular, there aren’t many hardcore fans who can remember stuff from that long ago.

One thing about Priest is that she posts her novel extras across many places. So for e.g. the printed novels have extra chapters that’s not on JJWXC. She also has a lofter account with some chapters of SPL (not in the English fan translation), and sometimes it goes on Weibo. AND she usually offers something new in her printed novels. The ones on JJWXC and in print aren’t free, while those on Lofter/Weibo are. 

Why does that matter? Because something that is censored on JJWXC would show up as “locked” but on Weibo etc, we wouldn’t know if there was something there at some point.

In my “research”, I’ve found all but 1 missing bonus chapter for TYK, and the ones I found are not the same as in the pirated novel. 

Her style of writing has changed over the years (this novel is 10 years or 11 years old now). She writes a lot less sexy bits these days and she’s never even written a lot to begin with (but she used to write a little more than she does now). But she always avoids writing actual sex (of any kind). The stuff I shared from OP’s Weibo is on the smuttier(st) end of her range (imo), but still not explicit. While it’s quite extreme by Priest’s standards, I still found it within the realm of possibility. 

CN fans (actually maybe all fans) always joke that they always get the gong/shou wrong for Priest novels, but actually Priest has a type that’s true about 99% of the time.

Although Priest is one of the most balanced danmei authors (in terms of CP dynamics) out there, she’s still a Chinese writer. I’ve read her het romance (Bandits) as well, and her CP dynamics are exactly the same between het and slash (female being the shou). 

The gong is always, always the possessive or jealous type (it’s just whether it’s the cute kind - Lu Bixing or the slightly creepy kind Chang Geng). The shou isn’t the type to actually get jealous seriously (because they know the gong loves them, they may allude to being jealous in a fun, teasing way). The shou is always very “strong” (physical prowess, but also mentally obvs). With the exception of TYK (arguably Can Ci Pin in the middle), the shou/female is more powerful (martial arts, or whatever) than the gong/male. there’s more but i’ll just stop here on this point.

The main thing is that the characterisation in those bonus chapters are fairly on point as to how Priest likes her couples. 

tl:dr; it can’t be proven definitively either way unless someone hassles Priest to ask. 

I’ve asked some CN friends who are somewhat-Priest fans on this as well, they basically just echoed that there are more chapters in Priest’s printed novels. They don’t really know or care too much though. The overall sentiment is: “if you like it, take it for real” and “if you don’t like it, then don’t believe it then”. So that’s all the advice I can give as well :)

After all, actions spoke louder than words.

Outside the window, the sky was gradually darkening with the setting of the sun. It was dusk, the kind where light breezes gently rustle the leaves on the trees. In your room, you were reading* at your desk, fully absorbed in what you were reading. At the back of your mind was a thought to turn on the light which you intended to do after reading the current page.

Knocks on your bedroom door interrupted your reading. When you turned around, J had already opened the door and entered the room. He was not one to be easily startled but when he saw you wearing your new purple glasses, he did a double take, checking it wasn't the waning light of the dusk playing tricks on his eyes.

J noticed and knew that you liked to wear purple attire and even had purple accents in your room just so you could feel closer to him while he was away. Not to mention the purple studs that you found not long ago, to match your ring. Not only did he appreciate this, but he also loved it. He absolutely loved seeing his colour on you and found it endearing that you would do this. Upon seeing your new purple glasses, his heart did a funny thing, a tiny leap, if you will.

He could've crossed the room in one long stride but he chose to take his time closing the distance between him and you, wanting to note every detail of your new purple glasses and how perfectly it fits you. Finally, he was right in front of you. You had stood up when you saw it was him who knocked and entered so now you tilted your head to gaze into his eyes. His beautiful brown eyes bored into yours. His hand reached up and cupped your cheek gently, his thumb slowly tracing the lower frame of your glasses. At this moment, all that was unsaid was spoken in this single simple gesture. He adored, and appreciated, your new purple glasses.

(This was inspired by your post where you mentioned getting new purple glasses - particularly this line, "I hope J likes them too, especially because of the color". im glad you're having fun with these!!!!! 😭 i do admit to having a mild crisis every time i reread my messages (EDIT: AS I AM DOING NOW WHEN I SCROLLED ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP...) to check if i have worded correctly and see just how much i have in fact written, so that's reassuring to hear, haha. i mean i definitely wouldn't have minded cutting down on my messages!

omg... so you're saying we could be height twins... or like. height twins within a few cms like that still counts in my onion. as someone who has stopped growing i am living vicariously through your possible height growth! i do that a lot with my taller friends even, like i know someone that's 2m/6'56" tall and idk i specifically like to picture him standing next to mingyu lmao

and i honestly think you are a perfect amount of descriptive! I've read more of your fics since we last spoke (pretty much went on a mini angst marathon because that's what i was in the mood for) and you give the audience more than enough that anything you haven't described they can fill in their own while reading, which i think is a difficult skill to balance! both in setting up fics with descriptions and also just scenery and emotional descriptions! i had a lot of fun (well, as much as you can reading angst) reading through your fics, and the way you detail things is definitely a large part of it! because it is easy to not do enough and have the reader think the characters are interacting in a dark void, or too much and have the descriptions slow down the pacing and action completely, but you don't have either issue! and hehe your thanks is all that's needed! or well just hearing me out is all you have to do, really. ^^ ao3 is worth posting on i think! it can definitely be a little intimidating to navigate at first (i know it was for me... what do you mean i have to write a summary) but for whatever reason there's something about how it's set up that makes it feel like you're less yelling into the void the way it can feel on tumblr? like you're not submitted to the whims of whether people will see your story in the tags or on their dash, so it feels less like ah, my fic is buried if it hasn't gained traction within like... a week. plus it's weirdly interesting even just watching your hit counter go up for stories, because it means that someone has willingly clicked on it after however you've briefed them. I mean I feel like nowadays with how digital everything is you can probably avoid developing film unless that type of photography is something you're interested in! also that's so cool that you are a photographer though! are you a freelancer? what so you like taking photos of?

ahhh okay so I built two computers so I might be able to help with this! as much as i can in text haha! (hopefully I don't sound patronising, I am super conscious of that 😔) I feel like the only thing you need to worry about with ram sticks is im assuming you have two of them because that's a common amount? and where you slot them in on the motherboard will be four slots, and I've been told you gotta fill in the slots alternatively! so like either the first and third, or second and forth! there's also a singular notch where the pins are to plug it in which lines up in the slot so you can't put it in the wrong way. you'll know when it feels right to push in because you shouldn't have to apply more than slight pressure to slot it in place! again sorry in advanced if I've just like... well I'm not a man but mansplained it to you haha. I just am invested in your journey to have photoshop run better. okay so I was hoping to go home to where my computer is but sadly I have yet to do so so sorry for not being able to document my process yet 😭 i could probably just send u the tutorial that I basically used which would have the same info but like? is that condescending ????

i do very much enjoy it! like whether or not I do it a public extent i need to write or I just get restless with creative energy. my latest wip has actually been consuming me... its looking to be my longest ever so far and since I've started I have not stopped writing since... and I think its been a month or so now? I'm curious, when you started writing, I'm presuming it was for another fandom other than seventeen? Or maybe original work? either way what did you start with? But yeah for sure, especially on a social network like tumblr where you can specifically see how much engagement each post gets, which also unfortunately has a lot of influence on how many people see it

hehe you're very welcome! like I said, I'm pretty familiar with being a writer on here, so it's really the least I can do! plus I get to read good fic, so it's a win win? and I definitely liked it enough to go through pretty much all your angst fics aside from Josh's multichaptered fic, although ill get to it at some point! also for the ceo wonwoo angst fic... is it wild that while the resolution was very cute and you ended it super satisfactorily, the minor particular angst craver in me went well, what if he only found out about mcs resignation through a letter? 👀 I am glad that he didn't and it ended in a cute confession though! it would be but don't feel pressured to go outside of what you're inspired to! like you can definitely write romance and romcoms and falling in love and having your heart broken, and there's nothing wrong with sticking to that! I will admit I'm very curious to see how you would tackle other genres (me personally as a writer: I am a sucker for some higher stakes), but that's not a pressuring thing (I hope!!!!) and honestly so long as you're writing you're growing, or at least i think so hehe.

I think for me like I can sometimes have issues processing the stuff I hear so voice calls/video calls can be kind of a nightmare... and that's when they're not with an international kpop star haha. It definitely makes sense because I feel the same way! I think as a person I'm conscious of power dynamics and while it's not seventeens fault at all (or well it is but its because they're so loveable) it does mean i don't particularly want to approach them as a fan. one thing that does freak me out tho is how I have a couple like.. friend of a friend of a friend scenario's that do have connections to seventeen though haha, although id never make anything of it. Like someone I kno knows someone else that went to high school with joshua, for example, and a different someone I know knows someone who's been a backup dancer for seventeen.

its so funny when seventeen bicker they really don't let each other get away with anything but they're so in tune with each other that the second it seems like a member is faltering they switch right back to being encouraging. oh yes absolutely haha. ooooh i mean impossible to have bad taste when talking about your favourite seventeen albums but yes these were all super iconic albums! I love the songs you listed, especially with teen, age (plus high key teen,age had the best concept diversity imo... I straight up bought like 3 out of 4 versions because of that). I will say I haven't seen a lot of people say home run is their favourite title track but tbh that just makes you leader of the pack haha.

re: developing/shooting film — i actually think that bc everything is digital, the beautiful thing abt film is that you have to be exact and precise about what you’re capturing, and even then, you can’t check it and you only know after the film is developed. i’ve only taken film photos a couple times, but it’s super fun! and kinda weird bc i want to check the screen out of habit…until i realize there is no screen!! that being said, i’m a photographer-ish? i do it as a hobby, but sometimes i do freelance gigs for friends, but that’s abt it! nothing too serious :o i usually do portraits and landscape photography, but i kinda just take pictures of everything that i think looks cool :)

i figured out my ram sitch!! i just didn’t push it in all the way SMH but i rly thought i broke my computer or smth it was beeping sm ailkfjdla. so funny story, i was messing w the ram right? i had 2 in my motherboard originally, and i didn’t realize only one of them was plugged in correctly, so my computer was slow af and i was like I BROKE MY COMPUTER and i would be listening to spotify and my poor pc just couldn’t handle that and having lightroom open at the same time. so anyways, i fixed it, and added the new ram sticks so we are GOOD TO GO! your explanation def was helpful, dw!! you are not being condescending at all, i rly am a noob about computers. like definitely more knowledgeable than most probably, but also not enough to say i know what i’m doing. i also watched youtube vid to make sure i knew what i was doing hahaha

so i started writing a couple years ago after i took a creative writing class in uni! it was for sci-fi but all my stories were romances LOL (not that you can’t have both, but like *shrugs*). then when pandemic/quarantine happened, that’s when i got back into kpop after a brief hiatus, and actually i started stanning sf9 first (did i mention this already?) but then seventeen came later, but they’re the first and only group i write for! idk why, but the inspo comes more for them than sf9 :[ but TECHNICALLY, i started writing a self-indulgent fic last summer, but it wasn’t until february of this year that i was like, hmm maybe i could post these somewhere? now here i am!! navigating the world of fanfic which honestly, i never expected. i used to be like, ugh ew who would read reader insert fics wtf??? but the tables have turned and now it’s all i write LOL (for fanfic at least, i stick to third person for original stuff).
