i love the youtuber Darkness and some of the many things he's said has stuck with me one of them about the salt mine and finale of RE7 which a lot of people complained about and I don't get why and he put part of what I was feeling into words "RE7 didn't need another boss fight" and I can't remember all he said about that or which stream it was on but this is where I think RE8 kinda failed as a survival horror (his RE7 playlist is 45 videos long and streams are all 3+ hours long)

I must confess I’ve never watched this individual but I think that’s a fair assessment. The last big boss fight is Jack and it’s a great fight. But at the end with Eveline, I really like how they set it up. It’s softer, morning light is now streaming in as Ethan is forced to see and hear memories from his longest night. It’s ethereal in a way and I think it suits the ending of the game quite nicely as morning often does bring an end to our fears usually.

There really is no survival horror element to re8. Does anyone remember in re7 when you’re faced with going to the basement but you really don’t have enough bullets to take down the molded? But if you get the shotgun, it takes SO much space and you get so few bullets. Item management in re7 is critical and practical. You carry what Ethan can carry, and you only get more as he finds backpacks. And omg that first backpack is a life saver lmao that makes it real and scary.

And re8 decides Ethan can carry a small arsenal on his person. Like holy shit the man ain’t that big. How is he carrying a shotgun, handgun, grenade launcher, magnum, etc along with bottles of first aid, amo for all the weapons, and meat. Oh and his daughters flasks and gems and anything else you find. It’s honestly absurd. Not to mention you’re seriously never without amo or the supplies to make more. I remember desperately trying to find ANYTHING on madhouse in re7 because I was fighting jack with a knife at one point cause all my stuff was gone. Honest trailers made a comment for re7 that they were happy to see the item boxes back and I’m sad they ditched them the very next game.

I’m ranting again 😆 but honestly? Outside of Ethan’s death, the lack of survival horror is my biggest complaint. I’m trying to survive, Capcom. Don’t make it easy.
