KNITTING, SELF-ESTEEM AND BODY IMAGE
Life after becoming a mom...
Gearing up for our big move to our new house, my son and I have just started going through our clothes.  Some of mine I haven’t seen in years and frankly, I forgot I even had them.  Pulling them out and looking through them I’ve become slightly self-conscious of the fact that I’m not as thin as I used to be before I had my son.  I worked very hard before he was born to get fit as I used to be quite overweight and I made the decision to completely revamp my lifestyle.  I lost close to 100 pounds in a year through exercise and healthy eating habits.  I’ve found since becoming a mom it’s a bit harder to have that “me” time to focus on my physical fitness.  By the end of the day after working and chasing after my four year old, I’m just plain exhausted and I’ve gotten into a slump of not wanting to do anything but binge watch Netflix.
This has gotten me to thinking that I need to change my lifestyle again as I’ve fallen back into the trap of a few unhealthy habits.  Honestly I’ve become a little blue thinking that I might not look as attractive as I once did before my son was born.  My son, however, says I’m the most beautiful mommy because I look like him!  (If only he knew that’s not how genetics works.)  His comment has gotten me thinking that maybe the thing in my life that needs to change the most is my perspective.
So in order to do that I have started looking into some Bohemian clothing designs.  I love the flow of the fabric and the idea that one size can and does fit all.  As a mom my taste in clothing has changed a lot.  I prefer loose fits to tight ones and clothes that I can put on in a hurry.  After designing my first sweater earlier this year I’ve decided I’m going to take a crack at a Bohemian inspired tank top.
Here’s my progress so far...
Tumblr media
A very close friend of mine, Duncan Cameron, did this very lovely sketch of my design.  I want to have a lace back using my favourite stitch pattern... old shale.  So far I’m set on a worsted weight yarn in either cream or mauve.  We will see what happens as the design unfolds.  Knitting needles tend to have a mind of their own!
Happy Knitting and Happy Soon To Be Summer!

A Turning Point - BGR Fest 2020 Concert Review
March 6, 2020
Friday evening was a night well lived. I went with my mother and my cousin to go see Lauryn Hill in concert at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. It was quite the spontaneous decision by my mother, but we all went along with it because legends like Lauryn don’t come around every lifetime let alone to your area 20 years after their “prime”. So, we decided to break the monotony of our weekend rituals and make it a girl's night. I had no idea that coming to this concert that I would leave feeling so stirred in my spirit, so filled with conviction to pursue passion and purpose, and in the same breath boldly claim every note, inflection, melody, and tempo of my life story. Watching both Alice Smith and Ms. Legendary Hill I saw black womanhood in its organic most blossomed form.
Ms. Smith sang every single song with such compelling velvety vocal range it called every goosebump forward. Her sharp yet soothing falsettos and moody full base notes sweetly communicated the honesty behind her soul-bearing lyrics. Smith and her harmonious band had delivered a sound I didn’t know I was longing to hear again. The artistry and musicianship displayed in her set, made my heart swell with gladness, reminiscing on a time in my life when all I could imagine was a life consumed by creating and vocalizing music. Listening to her made me remember that I once had dreams; dreams I abandoned out fear and doubt. Looking towards that at that stage and gazing upon Alice Smith’s elegantly clothed in a black ruffled gown that seemed to declare her black pride louder than some of us have the confidence to do daily, all I saw was a strong black woman embracing the fullness of her artistry. Reveling in every single piece of emotion embedded in the song’s composition, unbothered by the audience’s perceptions she was her own audience, her own champion, her own woman – She took up space according to her desired comfort.
It was in these moments that I was randomly confronted with such a heavy reflective question – “who told you that you were incapable of being the girl you dreamed of becoming?”. Stunned by the weight of this question amid this gripping performance I glanced down at my hands ashamed…slowly coming to the realization that for years now I had subconsciously been accepting ceilings. I wasn't able to say where or when it started but sitting there in that illustrious theater listening to melodies of R&B it dawned on me; my love for music and performing arts had been oppressed and masked by the whispers of other’s doubts and expectations. I’ve been putting caps and limitations on myself based on boxes and ceiling others have created to keep black girls like me in a specific place. To think that I sacrificed performing arts, my most cherished way of articulating my human experience, for the status quo is saddening. But when I looked back up at the center stage, eyes fixed on Alice Smith…I saw the effortless elegance in her stride. The fluidity - freedom of sorts in her movements and posture as she sang. It was as if each note resonated with her entire body flowing through her like melodic vessels, I was charged with confidence. Viewing her performance, the little black girl inside of me felt welcomed to dream again…and to do so with unapologetic force.
Passion and well-crafted artistry materialized through Alice Smith’s entire set; perfectly lacing her performance with the next experience. Foretelling the enchanting momentum that is Lauryn Hill.
The most dynamic artist of my lifetime, with one of the greatest most potent and impactful albums in this history of R&B, Soul, Rap & Hip-hop sauntered onto the stage in a mauve sequenced suit and boldness to match. As people’s cameras went up and cheers roared in the theater, Ms. Lauryn Hill gracefully stepped up to the mic and greeted the elated people of DC. I’m not sure if I was in such disbelief that I was getting this opportunity to see her in concert or something else but hearing her just talk unleashed fireworks in my vocal cords. She was real. Her distinguished and down to earth tone that consoled me to sleep on many bad days and emboldened me to face life with power other days was no longer a mere recording but an actual reality. Starstruck was an understatement.
Too excited to begin this musical journey, I immediately tried to identify what song she was performing first so that I could sing along. Her band immediately played with fervor, not waiting a moment to set the tone for the evening. Although I heard familiar lyrics instantaneously, I, unfortunately, couldn’t catch the beat enough to vocally interact because she had virtually recomposed all the melodies to her hit songs. She revamped the miseducation of Lauryn hill. What we all heard that night were reinterpreted versions of songs we’ve all grown to love for the past 20+ years. The audience was visibly disappointed the sound had evolved into unfamiliar musical territory.
However, despite my subtle personal disappointment as well, I was drawn back into excitement seeing the authenticity that still heavily encompassed her music. Between the raw gritty rasp in her voice, the gospel-like runs, and the directive conductor signals she gave her band, Lauryn Hill the multi-faceted artist was more than present tonight. She refused to be merely a gimmick on stage singing songs of her past. Tonight we got to see her actively reinventing herself as an artist, while in the same token allowing herself to revisit the soul behind her old lyrics and singing them from a new place - from a place of healing, maturity, and wisdom – The same classic elements that refine us and make Black Girls Rock. Rocks that stand the test of adversity, that lay the foundation for new realities to be built, and that allow younger generations to stand firm and be supported.  Today, seeing Lauryn perform and incorporate modern musical influences into her 98’ album hits was not just a personal achievement, but I feel a victory for the culture. Lauryn Hill is proof that when a black woman steps whole-heartedly into her purpose and passion she declares freedom for herself that causes a positive impact for generations to come.
Lauryn Hill and Alice Smith completely embodied black girl magic in that concert hall. The inspiration they imparted on the women, ladies, and girls is a gift that must be acknowledged. It was a blessing to be in the company of powerful black women, and I’m extremely grateful for the founder and CEO Beverly Bond who paves the way for us daily to have platforms like Black Girls Rock Fest. Thank you for all that you all have done.
Happy Women’s History Month!

Here is probably everything else I wore out and about this year less often or less memorably, I guess? It doesn’t seem like it, but I guess!
eyes:
Recently I’ve been trying to get use out of Subculture’s stone shade, Mercury. I really, really want to do grey and taupe and stone eye looks but I do not have what I need. This particular shade darkens a lot. I want to keep Subculture out to try to do new things with it–make that shade work more with the yellows, use the rosy shades, wear that metallic ONCE (I never have!!). I don’t really even remember wearing the Kristen Leanne palette this year, it was probably either the purple or the gold. This thing really is very pretty but it’s full of the kinds of potential looks I’ve already mastered and am unchallenged by. The UD Nocturnal palette is getting quite old and I’m trying to breathe new life into it–tried some looks with that purple and silver but it’s not the Cool Toned™ look I’m craving… I only use the mattes WnW’s revamped Comfort Zone palette (for how many years will we refer to it like that?) but I like them, as far as neutrals go. That Dior palette came from one of you guys and I’m still trying to figure out what it’s good for–I think I’m going to wear it on my face? That center shade in particular is just lovely for me. These just feel delicious.
Colourpop Sprinkle Me (this is kind of my go-to shimmery neutral “topper” shade, to the extent that I think it makes me lazy and I’m trying to use it left) and Don’t Leave, L’Oreal Infallible in Golden Emerald (these are still so good!), a Stila Magnificent Metals, the old kind you mix with a medium, in Metallic Gilded Gold. I did wear one of the Glitter and Glows this year but I guess it didn’t end up in here! MAC’s Bird of Prey pressed pigment from that LE Star Trek line–this remains just okay for me but I respect my choice to purchase it based on having the best of all the shade names! Bunch of fucking pencils, idk, I’m very lost when it comes to pencils: a NYX jumbo in Cashmere, a NYX retractable in Gold, Milani glitter retractable in Emerald Stone: they are all fine. A lot of this green and gold stuff was my NYE look.
I seem to recall doing an all-over-the-face look with that fluorescent pink Sweetpea & Fay pigment. I still have this! Pigments last forever! I am gonna keep this out for a blush.
There are three Grinch liquid liners from Pur that Westlin got me for Christmas (!) and I’ve been playing around with them. Reader, I’m out of practice. I’m not good at liquid liner. That is why I had coveted this set in the first place, because I didn’t have any and they’re the brush kind, which I always liked back in the days when we all wore liquid liner. But the learning curve is killing me a little bit here.
Two things I got from @madmoths that I’m still playing around with. That CYO mascara is GREEN! A dark green, pretty subtle on bare lashes. I wore it a few times then I wanted to keep it closed for a while until I got a white primer to try it with, so it didn’t dry out (esp given I have 100 mascaras open currently). I will report how it looks over the primer! What color eyeshadow with an evergreen lash? This would be a great time for a milky matte pink or mauve, which I DO NOT have! Strawberry milk + pine is a good colour combination. Then, black cherry or plum (for spring) and maybe mustard yellow. Seems like that is the agenda! Then there is a MAC dazzleshadow in Can’t Stop Won’t Stop. This has a plummy base with a looovely perfect light blue glitter in it, I’m trying to figure out the best way to layer it to bring out the blue. It is part of my cherry for spring plan! Sometimes I feel like I have a hard time wearing dark shades on my lid without feeling too…formal? And this is something I’m trying to get over. I think wearing them in particularly informal settings will help. (Maybe this is reservations about “sexy”?) This would look so good with a powder blue liner.
face:
I realize now that I should have put Anastasia’s Moonchild palette in my more used pile, I had totally forgotten about how all of January I wanted to be tin man. That silver-grey looks very flattering on me, but I want it to look grey. I want a fucking grey face highlighter. Pale princess problems :(
UD’s Bittersweet Afterglow blush, NYX’s Codebreaker ombre blush and Pinky powder blush: these are fine. Becca’s Opal is fine. That WnW Zodiac highlighting bar (Earth) is nice, it’s fine. It kinda made me like Mary Loumanizer, of all things, more, in comparison. That peachy Vera Mona thing is an eyeshadow that I wear as a blush. I am always thinking that I wish I had a peachy shimmery blush and forgetting I have that. I do not recommend those WnW stick blushes. I somewhat strongly recommend the Revolution liquid highlighters and the WnW Hello Halo liquid highlighters, the above are in the shades Liquid Champagne and Guilded (?) Glow. I like the Revolution one marginally better on me, easier to blend out.
I really wanted to like that Hourglass Vanish stick highlighter when it came out and I was amped to get a mini, it was so hyped and well-regarded. The shade is Champagne something or other. Maybe it’s just that I don’t wear foundation? But I don’t find this to be any nicer than any other stick highlighter I’ve tried, and I do like that kind of thing. It’s okay.
That WnW Illuminating Palette is still pretty nice, I feel like whenever I get bored of it I find a new way to use it. I have an idea about that and that little Vintage pink blush-highlight, they are both relatively subtle and very smooth: I think I might try to use them as finishing powders all over my whole face. Will report back.
That Colourpop blush is in the shade Bardot and I’m making a point to use it henceforth, these things don’t have forever shelf lives. It’s nice! I don’t love the super shock formula for blush specifically, I think it’s finnicky on a brush.
Oh! and my City Color Be Matte blush in Fresh Melon. Still my favorite. I’m a little concerned that it’s getting drier, and I cannot replace it!!
lips:
MAC Watch Me Simmer, still maybe my favorite lipstick of all time when I wear it, still haven’t found a dupe, lately I’m into wearing it very blotted out, because their cremes do emphasize lip weirdness and my lips have been VERY WEIRD.
The only thing here whose color isn’t represented well is that Maybelline lipstick. It’s called Fiery Fuchsia and I got it on super clearance. It is fairly similar to the fuchsia from the new Maybelline line, the one Nyma Tang had me wanting to buy, but this one was on clearance for like $3 likely for that reason, AND its # is 810 (flint area code). So far I quite like it, one of my favorite lipstick color families on me is what I call “dark pinks,” which are hot lipstick pinks at a darker value that haven’t been desaturated. This one is the most vibrant one in my collection so far and I imagine it’ll be an everyday shade for me. I’d like to get myself a liner in this family, because I’ve been relying more on liners since my lips have been Extremely Weird.
Here is Fenty’s Vay Cray gloss–this gets less winter time wear from me, because it can emphasize Weirdness, but it is ideal in the summer. Revlon’s HD matte metallic something or other in HD Dazzle is fine, Lucas got it for me hoping it would replace this (the only lip item I have EVER LOST! and mourn daily). It doesn’t, but I like it. More of those Benefit glosses in Hoola and Bella Bamba. Tom Ford Indian Rose: this is really nice especially if you have Weird Lip problems, but I like that Bare Minerals one better, maybe! The Bite Sephora birthday gifts– the stick in Glace and the bullet in Chai–are good, they’re fine, I haven’t learned to love them. I’m mad at Bite because a very very old lipstick I had from them finally got like, lowkey rancid, and it was expensive, and I’m like: what if you didn’t use food grade ingredients, hm? I haven’t found a good reason to wear that green, UD’s Junkie, much since the Christmas season, but I’ll figure it out. That Rimmel is one of my favorite shades,109, but the last time I wore it it was Weird (due to weird lips), so I’ve been afraid of it.
That Colourpop shade is Scorpio Moon (lol of course I bought it) and the quality and experience of it is unbelievable and it makes me want to buy more of them all the time. I’m hoping to get Flower Szn. Their Lux Lipsticks could be the best thing on the market–not just for the price, but for any price–if they kept them consistent and were willing to fill out a permanent range, but they won’t, because they are Colourpop! So they become the best for the price, maybe, but I still think something like Maybelline is a safer bet across the range. Anyway this color is so strange–which is good, it is unique. It turned out to be way more cool-toned on me than I expected, but at the same time it is not cool-toned enough, so I keep wearing it hoping it will be a delicious creamy greige, but it is not. That has been a trend for me this year, I am craving a delicious creamy greige and I have none. Hence these NYX shades, Haze (the straight grey) and Castle (the lavender, what a cute name), both of which I reach for when I want greige, and I end up disappointed, even though they are both good, especially that purple, which is a dear shade to me!

What I’m Loving Now
I just love writing these posts each month – even though they are sometimes a really random mix of things that are totally unrelated to beauty & fashion, it’s a great chance for me to share “real life” moments with you & give unbiased feedback on the products I’m buying & using regularly.  I hope you enjoy these as much as I do – here’s a glimpse at what I’m loving this month:
THE HAPPYFEED APP
I’ve been keeping a gratitude journal for the last couple years, but I’ve been having a hard time staying consistent with it lately.  With this app, you can set reminders to jot down moments you’re grateful for (3 per day) & you can even add photos along with your text – mine are everything from pictures of my puppy to a new recipe that was a success to flowers blooming in my yard to much bigger things like my kids’ school awards, signing a new campaign contract, etc.  I also love that you can look back through past memories on your calendar, which is the perfect pick-me-up if you’re feeling down.  It’s been a great way for me to stay positive and stay focused on the good in my life – highly recommend giving it a shot if you aren’t already utilizing something similar!
LIVING PROOF WHIPPED GLAZE
Ever since I started having balayage highlights put into my hair, I’ve been on a constant mission to keep them looking good.  The purple shampoo I was previously using started to have a drying effect on my hair, so I wanted to find an alternative product that would achieve the same results without stripping the moisture from my strands.  I just discovered this mousse & have been using it about every 2-3 washes to keep my highlights bright & to cancel out any brassiness.  It works like leave-in toner/conditioner & makes such a big difference (there’s one for brunettes & darker hair and one for blondes).  I apply it immediately after towel drying my hair, from roots to end & then I use this wide-tooth comb to ensure it’s evenly distributed.  If you want to test it out before buying the larger bottle, you can purchase the mini size here or here.
FISKARS WEED PULLER
We’ve been spending a lot of time beautifying our yard this year – from digging up dead bushes, putting in new flowers & shrubs to finally getting planter boxes for our front porch.  It’s meant a lot of hard work on the weekends, but we are starting to enjoy the fruits of our labor!  One of my least favorite tasks when it comes to yard work is weeding.  My joints can’t handle all the hunching over and kneeling that it takes, so usually my husband takes care of it.  But, when I came across this handy tool, I knew it would help me get back in the game.  Not only does it make the arduous task of weeding a total breeze, but it saves your back & knees from being sore the next day because you can operate it while standing upright the entire time.  It’s so satisfying (& slightly addicting) and it’s super easy to use – even my son can do it (if you click through the link, there’s a video you can watch to see how it works).
MASCARA WAND RECYCLING
I’m always looking for ways that I can be more environmentally-conscious and I recently learned about an easy way to recycle old mascara wands that benefits a great cause!  When you’re done with a tube of mascara, instead of throwing it away, simply wash the wand with Dawn soap to remove all mascara residue, let it dry & place in a sealable bag (I wait until I have 5 or more to send at a time).  Then, drop them in the mail to a Wildlife Refuge Center – they can use them to clean away oil, larvae, mites, mud & other contaminants from wildlife.  I’ve been sending mine to: Appalachian Wild, P.O. Box 1211, Skyland, NC 28776 (you can also call your nearest local center to see if they accept donations).  Such a simple way to help & all it takes is the cost of postage!
AQUABLISS SHOWER FILTER
File this under things I should have purchased a long time ago. A couple of years back, a hair stylist friend of mine suggested that I get a filter for my shower and I remember thinking, “how much difference could that really make?”. I brushed it off and never thought of it again…until my functional medicine doctor brought it up to me during a recent visit.  So, I decided to finally give it a try – I did an obscene amount of research before pulling the trigger on this one.  My two biggest concerns were that it would be too difficult to install & that it would cut down on our water pressure (which is already not the greatest).  But, we’ve been so happy with it and I cannot believe the change I’ve noticed in my hair & skin since we put it in.  If you have sensitive skin, are in an area with hard water or chlorine in your water, I suggest giving this a try – it’s a total game-changer!
BEAUTY BLENDER CASE
As I was packing & purchasing items for my India trip, I came across this handy case on Amazon & immediately added it to my cart.  It comes with a beauty blender sponge (if you don’t already own one) & is made from shatterproof silicone so it’s super-durable.  This keeps your sponge protected from getting stained from other products in your bag + the holes provide proper ventilation so it can dry completely.  This is so perfect if you travel a lot for work or have summer vacations planned – you can also just throw it in your purse if you need to do your makeup on the go.  For only $12.99, it’s a must-have!
SUMMER ACTIVEWEAR
I’m guilty of wearing pretty much all black & gray when I work out (especially in the cold weather months), but when I was at the gym the other day, I saw this girl in the cutest pastel matching set and, right then, I decided I needed to revamp my activewear for the new season.  There are so many bright colors & fun prints available right now – I did a little digging & came up with some great affordable options so you can buy several or mix & match with what you already own.  Here are my favorites:
ONE: Floral Crop Top + Gray Leggings TWO: High Neck Crop Top + High-Waist Leggings THREE: Twist Front Tee + Floral Leggings FOUR: Graphic Swing Tank + Eyelet Crop Leggings FIVE: Floral Print Tank + Mauve Leggings SIX: Side Knot Tank Top + Floral Print Leggings SEVEN: Tie-Back T-Shirt + Camo Print Leggings EIGHT: Colorblock Sports Bra + Compression Leggings

re-selling or transaction villas in sarjapur road
If you're shopping for and designing on re-selling or transaction out, to urge the foremost out of your property you may wish to try and do some upgrades to provide it curb charm. the number of upgrades required would rely on a case by case state of affairs. clearly if the roof, foundation, etc, has to be done, that is while not question. i'm talking concerning major renovations, however upgrades. That curb charmwhich build a client go, "wow" and pay a bit additional for luxury villas in sarjapur road. If you are not aiming to work with a designer and you'd prefer to couple yourself, I counsel aiming to the library or shopping for a bunch of up-to-date home vogue magazine to urge ideas of what is in right away. Knowing your market is not such an enormous deal as a result of most everybody desires one thing stylishand trendy. one thing i prefer to decision "urban chic"; a great deal of fresh lines, artistic movement and bright open areas. A Zen like approach. That look is commerce to the mass market right away. First impressions area unit perpetually necessary, therefore the outside of the house wants the foremostlove. do not go boring either. selected exciting colors like grey/mauve, terracotta or sage. Paint everything that wants it, wood, railing, mailbox, lighting fixtures, etc. i am not talking all one color, have some black or white in their for distinction. If they cannot be painted, replace with 2BHK villas in whitefield. If there is not any landscaping or it's shot, you wish to revamp the planning. take away or trim everything that's overgrown. Be pitiless if necessary. Cedars area unit nice once they area unit inexperienced and little, but if they're yellow and too tall, get obviate them. Keep the planning short, therefore you'll see the doorway approach. Weed the grass if any, add a lot of seed. Clean out the dirt of dust and weeds, add a lot of dark earth and mulch. build a pleasant clean line between the grass and garden. i'd invest during a fewbushes that distinction one another and a few bright annuals that illuminate the front. Floors area unit the foremost necessary. they create such an enormous impact. they need to be nice. If there's hardwood I counsel refinishing them. Staining them dark is often a pleasant bit. inlay appearanceunimaginable stained chocolate. It goes from a nasty 1970's look to one thing fashionable and Asian trying. If the floors have to be compelled to get replaced, bamboo and alternative property flooring area unitstylish right away. If the covering material is previous, change it. If you'll afford tile, do it in budget villas in electronic city. Kitchen. If the room is AN previous wood 1950's vogue, no have to be compelled to rip that out and redo it and pay all that more money. Paint it shiny cream and add trendy knobs. you'll even add a moulding. If it's white cyanuramide, you'll either paint it with special paint, or keep it as is. generally it is theencompassing space that may buff it up and build it not look therefore "melaminy". Meaning, add a stylishcovered backsplash, a brand new tabletop, and knobs. If the cyanuramide features a 1980's boarder that may be launched, take away it for a cleaner look. If you have got the 1990 oak cupboards, they give the impression of being unimaginable painted furthermore. If the woodwork is hanging from the ceiling dividing the uptake space, you'll take those down and utilize them elsewhere, like AN island. Extra touches: Faucets area unit necessary. they'll be such a concentration to the area. you do not ought to go high finishto possess a sophisticated fashionable look. I think the investment of crown moulding adds such a lot price to the place if it's done right (no would likewithin the bathroom). Paint it shiny to provide it a vintage look. Keep paint colors straightforward and light-weight. Painting one shut in an area dark gray or another stylish color is okay, but use minimally. Dark on lightweight is incredibly stylish right away. Make sure the flow of color from one space to future is there. Clean, clean windows area unit a requirement. Tear down a wall if necessary to provide the house a lot of of AN open feel. as an example gap the room to the lounge. you need to verify with a structural engineer before tearing something down. Pot lights and dimmers. Trendy lighting fixtures and knobs. do not go high finish. Places like Ikea area unit fine or places that reclaim vintage. Bathrooms area unit simple as a result of it all lies within the alternative of the tile and counter prime. White tub, sink and rest room area unit perpetually in and if they're in fitness they will not would likecommutation. The woodwork will be painted a black, chocolate, white or cream. it'll update any look.

The current look of Air Force One is a true design classic. It dates back to 1962, and is the result of collaboration between JFK and Raymond Loewy, one of the fathers of industrial design.
But after more than five decades and eleven administrations, the elegant livery is getting a makeover. President Trump said he doesn’t like the current aesthetics and intends to replace the blue hue. According to the media platform Axios, the President would like to make it look “more American.”
Regardless of Trump’s vision, it’s highly likely that the next presidential plane will look different as the current aircraft approach the end of their lifespan and emerging technology makes a replacement necessary,
More than One
Air Force One is technically not the name of a plane, but rather the callsign used by air traffic controllers to refer to whatever aircraft is carrying the President. Popularly, though, it is the name given to the presidential plane, a modified Boeing model 747-200B, which under Air Force designation is known as a VC-25A. There are two of them, so that at least one is ready at all times. They’re mostly identical except for their tail codes: SAM 28000 and SAM 29000 (SAM stands for Special Air Mission).
The callsign was adopted in 1953, after the plane carrying President Eisenhower and a commercial airliner, both with the tail code 8610, dangerously entered the same airspace. The president’s aircraft at that time was a prop plane — a Lockheed C-121 Constellations nicknamed Columbine II — but it was again Eisenhower who flew on the first presidential jet, a modified Boeing 707 that entered service in 1959. At that time, the planes were still full-fledged military aircraft and they sported a red, orange and black color scheme designed by the Air Force.

The radical redesign that still survives today debuted on a brand new Boeing 707 (or C-137 Stratoliner as the Air Force called it) with tail code SAM 26000. It entered service in October of 1962.
“It evolved from an interesting interaction between JFK, Jackie Kennedy and Raymond Loewy, who was a famed industrial designer,” said Air Force One historian and former Smithsonian curator Von Hardesty in a phone interview.
French-born Loewy was among the most successful designers of his time, having created such icons as the Lucky Strike pack, Coca-Cola vending machines and the Greyhound buses, and popular logos for TWA, Exxon and Shell. “He criticized the looks of the plane that had been delegated for presidential use, which had a garish orange nose and looked too much like a military plane. He wanted something that would reflect the presidency and he thought this was an opportunity to fashion a really compelling design, which arguably he did.”

‘Seafoam’ blue
Although one of Loewy’s initial sketches included some red, the final design did not. The dominant blue paint job came at JFK’s request. “The seafoam blue and silver on the lower half was a stroke of genius to make the plane seem more horizontal and sleek,” said designer and former president of the American Institute of Graphic Arts Sean Adams in an email interview.

“The seafoam is a surprising choice, but an elegant solution to the issue of making the plane sophisticated and modern, stepping away from the military look of Eisenhower’s Air Force One. The plane spoke to an optimism, youth, and fresh approach that was perfect for the Kennedy administration,” he added.
The typeface for the legend “United States of America” is Caslon, very similar to the one used in the Declaration of Independence.

The plane remained in service until the Clinton administration, but it was replaced as the main presidential aircraft by another 707 in 1972. That particular airplane, tail code SAM 27000, was retired in 2001 after having served seven presidents: Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush.
Adams isn’t thrilled at the prospect of a revamp. “Air Force One is an identity with equity. It works,” he said. “Why make it look like a Walmart in the sky?”
Red, white and blue
During the Reagan administration work began on a new generation of Air Force Ones, with First Lady Nancy curating the interior design. But due to a number of delays, the planes only entered service under George H. W. Bush in 1990. While almost every system was upgraded, the paint job was preserved. “A good design brings with it a certain inertia and you really need to have a compelling reason to change it. By that point, it was so widely accepted and universally applauded that they just wanted the new 747 aircraft to have it too,” said Harvesty.
These are the planes that are still in use today, and the Loewy design has undergone only minor amendments, due to the larger size of the 747s.
“It’s faithful to the Raymond Loewy design as much as possible on a behemoth of a plane. It’s hard to make a 747 look light and sophisticated, but the color, shapes, and typography do a great job. It maintains all the positives from the 1962 version. I’m especially glad that the 1980s didn’t creep in on the design with mauve and almond,” said Adams.

Earlier this month, Boeing confirmed it received a $3.9 billion contract for two new presidential planes. They will still be 747s — albeit a newer version, the 787-8 — even though the aging plane model is being phased out by commercial airlines.
“The reason is that the Secret Service requires, in the interest of safety, that the President should fly only on four-engine aircraft. The 747 also provides more space for the President, his key staff, and the complex communications equipment required for the president to be in touch with anyone in the world at all times,” said aviation expert Gene Heisman in an email interview.
But most importantly, they will sport a new look: “Air Force One is going to be incredible,” Trump said in a CBS interview. “It’s going to be the top of the line, the top in the world. And it’s going to be red, white and blue, which I think is appropriate.”
How exactly this will play out is still unclear. It’s unlikely but Trump could even decide to repaint the current planes instead of waiting for the new ones, which will only enter service by 2024 (though the President has requested that the planes be ready sooner in 2021).

According to Von Hardesty, there are no fixed rules regarding the implementation of Air Force One’s design, so anything can happen. “I love the current design. But perhaps the President’s motivation is that the aircraft should reflect more explicitly a sense of American patriotism, and red, white and blue, of course, are synonyms of that. If the president wants to review and possibly change the livery, there is no historical precedent that stands in the way of him doing so,” he said.
But he added, “I hope they will pull something off that’s pleasing and acceptable to everyone. I just hope it doesn’t become some ugly debate.”
