This is for @lovinhesmdcn​‘s Mean Birthday writing prompt event! My birthday this year was one of the worst days of my life so I chose to create a fantasy where that day never happened. *deep sigh* one day I will stop using my personal experiences so much in my writing but today is not that day.

I feel the need to apologize to those of you that read the sneak peek and came here expecting smut! This is pure fluff sorry :) hope you still enjoy it!

Harry was still baffled at the fact that you did not care one bit about celebrating your birthday.

"It's your special day, love, wanna celebrate you. With you. Y'don't want a party or anything?"

"I know, but," He stuffs another bite of pancake in his mouth before continuing, "This year you have me. I wanna spoil my girl and s'not fair that you're refusing me that chance."

You roll your eyes, "You spoil me everyday."

"Do not."

"Do too. Who made breakfast and refused to let me help?"

"That's not spoiling. S'just because I didn't want you to burn the pancakes again."

"That was ONE time, and it's only because YOU distracted me."

"Just wanted a good morning kiss, ya the one that got all greedy and wanted more." He waves his fork in your direction, emphasizing his point, "Filthy little tease, you are." 

"Maybe I am, but you have to admit you started it that day."

You shake your head no, placing your hand flat to his chest to push yourself off his lap.

When the day arrives, the two of you spend most of the morning in bed before he forces you to get up for a late lunch. 

A small square package, messily wrapped in colorful paper lay on the kitchen table in front of you, 

"This does NOT count as your present. I just saw it at the store and couldn't resist.”

He's giggly the whole time you rip the paper away, you protesting about him already breaking your rules. 

"S'not a real one, of course. Knew you'd throw a fit if I did that."

With the paper finally gone, you pull the top off the box only to gasp at what's nestled there in tissue paper. 

A crown. A more grown up version of the plastic, fake-jeweled ones you wore religiously as a child. This one sparkles silver against pastel pink paper, the afternoon light reflecting the glitter and casting a glow across your face. When you don't move to take it from its wrapping, Harry moves forward, removing it from the box to nestle it on top of your head.

"How's it look?" He's looking at you the way you look at a sunset, like he's never seen anything more gorgeous.

You stand in front of your closet, post-shower, in nothing but a loose sleep shirt and underwear.  Your hair rests atop your head in rollers. Your only instructions so far from Harry were to get ready and dress nice.

"Well will you at least tell me how nice you mean by dress nice? How am I supposed to decide what to wear? You know I have a hard enough time choosing when I do know where we're going."

"Then let me choose for you." He leads you to the bed, pushing you to sit on the edge, a hand coming to cover your eyes. 

You let out a deep sigh, closing your eyes.

"D'ya not trust me?"

"Of course I do. You know I do."

"Alright then. No peekin'."

You hear him shuffle away, then the sound of hangers gliding back and forth across the rod in the closet as he makes his selection.

"Will you be picking shoes as well? Or do I get to decide that?"

"I'll pick them." It's easy to visualize the smile on his lips. He's enjoying this way too much.

You hear the bathroom door open again and you temporarily peek one eye open, your curiosity getting the better of you.

"What about jewelry?"

"Ah, forgot about that. Thank you, babe." He's at your dresser now, you hear the top of your jewelry box being removed and the clink of things being removed and replaced as he carefully coordinates what will go best together.

"Can I open my eyes yet?"

"Patience, angel. Almost done."

His feet are too quiet as he returns to you, and you jump when a finger boops your nose. He chuckles before bending down to whisper in your ear, "Be ready in 20" landing another playful swat at your hip.

He's placed everything in the bathroom, hanging the dress on the back of the door, shoes and accessories on the counter.

Of course he would choose that dress. He's told you frequently how much he loves it on you, the soft, flowy fabric hugging your body and accentuating your features in the most flattering ways. Lucky for him it was one of your favorites too. You laugh when you see the shoes, a pair of low set heels. Anyway, under the cut is where you oughta be to hear my thoughts, both cute and seriously! (Going all out here! You get puns AND a rhyme! I spoil you all!)

Press Release Reality and myth begin to merge as the fairytale characters awaken from Evil Queen Regina’s broken curse and remember who they were. But to their dismay, they aren’t transported back to fairytale land. To make matters worse, Rumplestiltskin - aka Mr. Gold - in an effort to gain the upper hand in his power struggle with Regina, has introduced magic into the town. In fairytales magic has its place, but in our world it can have unfathomable consequences. Meanwhile, back in the fairytale land, Prince Phillip awakens his sleeping beauty, Aurora, but discovers that he and his traveling companion, Mulan, will soon have to face a deadly foe. General Thoughts - Characters/Stories/Themes and Their Effectiveness Past The past segment here does an interesting job answering the question of what happened to the Enchanted Forest. Aurora’s a great focal point because just like her, we’re being introduced to the remains of the land with answers only slowly being revealed. At the same time, it’s not for lack of trying on Aurora’s part. She’s quite no-nonsense and inquisitive, but still romantic and trusting enough to believe Phillip as he continues to lie to her.

Additionally, there’s a great deal of tension created between all three mains. Between Aurora and Phillip, there’s the lie about the Wraith’s mark. Between Aurora and Mulan, there’s the threat of romances with Phillip. And between Phillip and Mulan, there’s the fact that they’re both lying to Aurora about everything, the fact that Mulan’s not particularly warm to someone who seems to be characterized as such, and the fact that Phillip’s also lying to her, too. The way that it all comes to a head is just perfect and it leaves everyone in a really interesting for future episodes. It was also cool to see that this was the immediate future following the events of the present segment, a fun way of playing with time and a component for a fantastic twist! Present This episode does a marvelous job exploring exactly what one would want to see after the curse breaks. We get to see happiness through reunions, and on a large scale. At the same time, we get to see the chaos that would be expected too. Mary Margaret and Blue’s reunion (As small as it was) illustrated this best for me. There was that glee in the action of them holding hands, but panic upon the discussion of magic. Additionally, there’s a great buildup to Emma’s source of pain as well, and it’s contrasted so well against Snow and Charming’s enthusiasm. Emma’s character is not forgotten and her pain from the past is still present and valid, making her inability to connect with her parents so sympathetic and heartbreaking. This is a large part of the heart of the story, especially this season!

It’s also great how this story intertwines so well with Rumple and Belle’s. And let’s talk about their story, because it’s fantastic! Rumple having Belle back doesn’t just up and solve his problems. He’s still who he is and he even lies to her and actually gets consequences for it. Granted, they’re temporary consequences (I personally would’ve kept them apart for another episod at least), but at least Rumple is given a sting for what he did and Belle is very clearly framed in the right for her feelings and actions in response to the lie, so I don’t have that many complaints. All Encompassing I was thinking of a grand theme for this episode, and I think Mulan put it best: “Love is sacrifice.” Throughout the different dynamics on display in”Broken,” this was the most prevalent. Now, of course, it’s prevalent in the past, as Phillip’s love for both Aurora and Mulan has him sacrifice himself to the Wraith. But it’s also littered through the present like purple magic smoke. Snow and Charming’s love for Emma came at the cost of potentially sacrificing their relationship with her. Emma’s love for Henry came at the cost of her sacrificing both her hatred for Regina and her being in the same realm as him. Belle’s love for Rumple came with the sacrifice of her anger towards his lie. Those are just a couple of them, but you get my point. It was a well delivered theme that worked with our cast of characters and gave way for the stories they’re going to have going forward! Insights - Stream of Consciousness -The first time I saw this opening, I actually thought I found the wrong show because it was so different than anything we had seen from OUaT so far. Now, it’s so cool for precisely that reason! It’s a jarring turn (A new protagonist and setting and the return of the pop music) that still has tiny elements of the show (The horse and the well-dress rider that gives a vague fantasy vibe). Even the way it’s shot is something that’s more real than the different angles we got in Storybrooke. It just makes the moment when we see both something fantastical from Storybrooke all the more striking. -I forgot how no-nonsense Aurora could be! While still romantic, she’s very questioning and has a nice bit of snark to her. -I love the way magic just hovers in the air, like a harmless sandstorm. It’s hazy and mystical and just a touch threatening because of those that have magic, but there’s a calmness to it too that makes it so lovely to look at. -Those reunions are positively heartwarming! It feels so beautifully earned and everyone is so well connected! It was a great idea to start here as a buildup to the reunion with Emma. -And speaking of, I’ve got to give all the credit in the world to Josh and Ginny. Their reaction to seeing Emma for the first time uncursed is beautiful. Just like in the finale, Snow and Charming get so speechless, ironically showing the emphasis of the moment. And Jen too! Emma’s reaction to this is pretty fitting -- not running at the moment, but this is a lot to take in. The two sets of performances create a stunning contrast with each other to make a reunion so distinct. -Robert Carlyle’s face! Rumple is out for BLOOD! -Also, I just realized that we haven’t seen Regina, and given the last frame of her from Season 1, that is fantastic buildup! -I have...opinions on the whole “no killing under any circumstances” policy, but right now’s not the best time to write that out. -That said, I LOVE Henry’s reaction to the mob invading Regina’s house. It puts Henry’s behavior and expectations towards Regina in Season 1 in context and affirms that for as much as he wants the curse to be undone and for her to lose, he does love her. -The buildup to Regina’s lack of magic is stunning and hilarious! Everyone in the crowd pull off their anger and fear so well and Lana’s put all the ham in to make this such a fantastic moment! -Whale is just the fucking worst! -THANK YOU SNOW!!!! FUCK! YES! THAT WAS THE WAY TO HANDLE REGINA! LOCKING HER UP IS A GOOD IDEA! Seriously, as I said before, while I feel like “no killing under any circumstances” isn’t an ideal way of conducting things for someone who committed harm and could intend more of it, there do need to be consequences for that behavior and Snow went about making a good decision about how to enforce those consequences. I feel like if the Wraith hadn’t taken Emma and Mary Margaret away and Regina hadn’t got her magic back, she would’ve also suggested a trial. -Did Emma change jackets between being at Regina and the sheriff’s station? -Rumple’s “OH” face at the jail cell is so beautiful! XD -My headcanon is that Wraiths have pool parties in the River of Lost Souls during their down time! XD -Did RUMPLE get a haircut and I just didn’t notice? His hair looked so long in the station compared to now! -How do non-Dark Ones summon Wraiths? Apart from the one that invaded Aurora’s land, Mulan has at least heard of them before. -I only realized now how much the writers pull that “I’m dying, but I can’t let my beloved know” trope. I don’t mind it (It’s romantic, tragic, and usually has an interesting bit of lore and character interaction because of it), but when I think about it, wow, there’s a staggering amount of those instances! -”You’re going to have to be more specific.” Given all that he’s done in the last 12-24 hours, that is quite the legitimate question! -Rumple, I get that Emma broke the curse, saved Henry, and reunited with her parents, but you know damn well what you did! Like, leave a note or something! Emma thought her kid was dead and you above all others should empathize! And kudos to Emma for just not buying it for a second! -I’m stuck between finding the Wraith cool as hell and fake as hell, but I’m going to lead towards the former! -Holy crap! Snow’s pulling a pre-Gina Linetti Gina Linetti with that lighter and can! When did I start loving Snow so much because holy crap, I like Snow! -Awww! There’s some cute Regal Believer when Regina asked if Henry really asked her to protect her! -Okay, so I may be the last person in the world who cares about plot holes, but how did Aurora sacrifice herself when she was cursed? -Josh had some glorious acting when it came to the post-portal anger with Regina? You can see every beat of sweat and hear the snarl in his voice! It was equal parts sad and scary -Henry asking Regina to stay away from him and everyone was also the right call. I swear I love Regina, but Henry’s decision both has a level of him giving Regina due consequences and a level of childish pettiness because his presence (As far as he knows at this moment) won’t affect her progress. -I didn’t think until now about how tragic it is that David and Henry, two people who never lived in the loft, now are, but without either of the two usual inhabits. How much are you willing to bet that they spent the day during the reunions imagining settling down in the loft with Emma and Snow, just the four of them together and happy! It makes the bleakness of those first few moments in the loft, such an iconic and bright setting in the last season so sad. -I also feel like I like David a lot more this season! He’s a lot more determined and given emotional provisions, and by that I mean, the emotions that he has are more well founded. Arcs - How are These Storylines Progressing? We’re mostly back to just the introductions of conflicts here: Emma accepting her parents - This is set up to be Emma’s internal conflict throughout the episode and I’d argue the season if not also the next one too. There are multiple facets to it. First, Emma’s collecting her bearings with the giant revelation, and second, she’s working through an underlying bitterness at her parents for leaving her alone throughout those twenty eight years. Emma and Snow stuck in the EF - This one just kind of explains itself! Storybrooke working to get them back - See above. Regina’s Redemption - A line from my favorite critic, Moviebob that he said quite recently in regards to the protagonists of “The Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise got me thinking as to the nature of redemption for the villains of the show as a whole. It basically amounts to the titular characters and others who redeem themselves do so “through their commitment to each other and a higher cause.” And I think that’s why I’d say that Regina’s redemption starts here. While probably more true for when she first adopted Henry, one can definitely say that their dynamic grew a little skewed both before and during Season 1. So I’d say that this is the rebirth of Regina’s commitment to both Henry and doing better as a person by bringing back Emma and Snow, and thus the true start to her redemption.  Favorite Dynamic Emma and Snow - While I was tempted to put Charming in here too, Snow is the driving force behind this dynamic as she is the more active in her demands. In addition to being a dynamic that plays with the theme of “love is sacrifice” (In two respects with them, actually), as I mentioned before, they have a great contrast. Mary Margaret’s passion for meeting her daughter is so wonderfully enthusiastic while Emma’s is...not. What I love is how not only do both women get time to discuss those feelings, but how both of their contrasting feelings are portrayed by the story and the conflicting character as completely valid. While everyone wants Emma to have that same joy as her parents, she doesn’t, and while admittedly a touch selfish (Though I’d also argue understandably so), there’s an understanding that this isn’t just something that she’s going to process right away. Writer Adam and Eddy are of course in charge here, and I think they delivered on exactly what they needed to! Exiting the curse was a big step and doing so would require things that an audience needed to see, both good and bad, across both realms and they did a great job of that. On top of that, the mixing of all three storylines is some of the best that I’ve ever seen of the series. It all feels so seamless and natural how they intersect. Rating Golden Apple (10/10 with an * for superb quality). This episode would’ve been good enough had we just seen the reunions and consequences of the actions in the Season 1 finale. However, we got more than just that. We got new characters, a new story, perfect character conflicts that exist so well with who we have and what they mean to each other, a twinge of lore, and some mysteries to be solved throughout the season! Everyone gets something to do and a “shining” moment (Whether it be an action of heroism or villainy), and it just meshes together really well. It’s just a well put together episode and deserves the appropriate acclaim! Flip My Ship - Home of All Things “Shippy Goodness” Sleeping Warrior - We definitely get some of that enemies to lovers stuff here, and I always enjoy that! There’s a great chemistry between Jamie Chung and Sarah Bolger have some nice chemistry and their characters have that nice defensiveness that ends up making the moment where they do come together at Phillip’s “grave” very sweet. Wow! This was a great way to start the season off! Full disclosure: Since I binged Season 2 and 3 during my initial watch of the series and only rewatched a handful of episodes from it, I never really took much of a magnifying glass to the individual episodes, nor did I really form opinions on some of the characters, so seeing this episode rock as hard as it did made me so happy!!!

So the leaves are finally starting to drop off the trees around here, giving me all the autumnal/winter pinterest-your-way-to-Halloween vibrations. Nature has a canny way of living and dying and getting rid of what it doesn’t need, taking time out, taking a rest and putting its feet up while the cold weather sets in. It doesn’t need to tweet about it, or update an instagram story with the caption “Branches are dying off lolz.” Autumn marks the beginning of death and decay, it won’t be long until we start posting pictures of our favourite streets coated in leaves (I’m into it). It’s amazing; so many of us love the colours of the fall but in essence, it is the death of living things that we celebrate, so that everything can start anew next year. That’s reality, and I think that’s beautiful. 

Here’s my point. I wish social media would take a break; I wish it would curl up in front of the fire, maybe die off and come back better for everyone next year. I know so many people who now log out of their apps, only to be sent emails from the apps themselves trying to help them “get back online.” This happened to me two weeks ago. 

I don’t know whether I was suffering from PMS, or if I’d been sitting around too long, but my anxiety came on through flood gates I’d obviously forgotten to shut, so it took me a little while to realise the frequency had returned and was buzzing underneath everything before I tried to counteract its presence. I’ve realised I find it quite difficult trying to relive just how my anxiety feels in those moments, because everything seems like a big grey, squishy worm that bleeds into each passing minute, floating midair, making the atmosphere dreadful and vehr wormy. So there are no definitive emotions. Just worry, dread, pressure around my brain and the existential worry that I am not enough.  What I can recall, though, is that I was on social media so often I must have feared it was going to miss me. I have noticed that in times of my quarter life existentialism, the less I have going on around me, the more I automatically, without thought or intention, find myself immersed balls deep in social media. It takes around an hour of surfing absolute dink before I even realise how deep my balls are in the first place. I scrolled mindlessly, and through that open window of my phone, that little ignorant bitch named anxiety flew in as easily as a mother-fucking pidgeon, and I felt just as bad as that time I accidentally pronounced Pinot Grigio as Pee-not-Gri-guy-O. But alas! What did I do, but continue to swipe my poor little finger, as if it would find some answer, some pick-me-up that would relieve the overwhelming feeling of I-HAVE-FAILED (and believe me, when I ordered a Pee-not-Gri-guy-O to that waitress in the restaraunt I did feel that same sense of existential failure). I couldn’t explain to you or myself what I was looking for, and yet the more I found myself looking the worse I felt.

Let me tell you, that shit is as dangerous and addictive as gambling. 

Did you know, Twitter was the first application to develop the pull-to-refresh feature, which was essentially mimicry of a slot machine? It wasn’t long before all the others followed suit (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat et al); ever wonder why you keep refreshing your pages? Do you hope to see something new? Something more beautiful? Something you’ve been tagged in? What’s the difference between you and the fella in Aspers, feeding in twenty after twenty into the machine, in the hopes that this time, this time, he’ll be rewarded? What about the woman who keeps getting four fifties changed at a time, laying all her chips on the roulette table, and losing it all, only to change more money, because this time, this time, she might win? 

It’s not about the money any more. It’s about seeking the reward, the win, the fulfilment, and in social media’s world, validation.

So I’ve known for a while the power the internet and social media apps have had over me; all the articles I read in research for my novel really opened my eyes. Sometimes, though, I’m just as good as all the other people on the bus; neck craned, eyes cast downwards, quickly researching Ariana Grande’s insta feed to salivate over her aesthetic, or to see why everyone thought she was responsible for Mac Millers death (hint: she wasn’t). It’s because, just like everyone else, I’m totally addicted to my phone.

Aside: I’m not blaming my bout of anxiety on social media, I’m just noting that it is a huge factor in how I perceive my life.

I use social media as a drug for my restlessness, and I receive sweet fuck all from it. Every time I look, it’s a reminder of how little I’m working, because I’m spending all my time thinking about working and looking at other people succeeding. It integrates this sense of failure, the smallness of my successes look in comparison, to be puney and frail. My lovely living room, amidst the quaint backdrop of my London suburb, looks boring against other artists hanging out in studios and lounging against LA backdrops online. What a failure I am; I’m eating into my savings to pay rent and afford food, I can’t buy that nice contouring set they’re selling to look the part, I’m flogging my clothes on Depop for spare change, I can’t afford flights there, I can’t afford any of this and I’m still chasing this pathetic goal of making money from my art. Every time I leave my parents house, my Dad hugs me and says, “Keep your head up, it’ll happen,” even if I haven’t spent the last two days complaining, even if I’m content, even if I run a bloody half marathon. Everyone’s still aware that she’s still trying, she’s not there yet. It’s really quite easy to lose yourself in those thoughts, it’s easy for me to reel all this off for the sake of a blogpost, but in the end I have to remind myself of the reality.

And that is, I’m fine. I’ve been doing better than I have for a long time. I’m excited, I’m getting motivated, I’m trying, I’m earning, I’m positive about the future. I’m looking after myself.It’s uncertain at times, but life is uncertain. I’m not stepping forward to play the victim in the play of me life. But that’s the kind of outlook I have in hindsight when I haven’t been on my phone all day, because social media does not help my anxiety, or hinder its progress at all. It encourages it. Instagram feeds off of my insecurity and isolation, Twitter feeds off my desire to be all knowing, Facebook creates the illusion that I’m connected when in reality I’m more separated from everyone on there than I’ve ever been.

As a generation, we’re so very disenfranchised but we’re all part of this huge market. It feels as though we’re connecting, and don’t get me wrong, social media is great for self expression and identity and openness. But at the end of the day, it’s a business, and we’re it’s blind, salivating customers. It’s a marketplace for everyone to sell themselves, even when they have no goods to offer. We’re advertised products that an algorithm predicted we’d like, we’re told to post daily to reach more followers, but most of them are bots or strangers who won’t look at your page more than once. Everyone follows each other but we don’t support or give like we used to. I get the odd comment on Instagram complimenting me on my “content,” but that “content” is just my life, I don’t plan it, I don’t create it, it just is. When did our lives become fictional?! I’m all about real action, not figurative or hopeful. I’m about judging my relationships on how they are outside of an app, not what’s said inside of it. It’s too easy to lose ourselves in the virtual version of reality, where we can create how we’re seen. That’s the side of social media that I see, in terms of how it reflects back to me; it’s dark and foreboding, it’s void of meaning. And that is why I’ve been logging out. I want to enjoy it when I’m on there, not reminded of every flaw in my makeup. I rarely login in to Facebook now. I allow myself, twice a day, to look at Instagram (my main vice and source of all my first world anguish), and now I’ve been off-line, my desire to browse the app has diminished dramatically. I notice my boredom better than before; It doesn’t hold my attention. I caught myself scrolling half loaded pictures (bad wifi connection) this morning, and realised fifteen seconds in that I wasn’t actually looking at anything, I was swiping, endlessly, but the pictures were blurry and it was only the subconscious idea that something would appear that kept me going. So I put my phone down and finished my poop.

Has anyone else found themselves doing something similar? Has anyone else tried logging out? What kind of an effect did it have on you, on your mental health? What kind of an effect does your active participation on social media have, as a whole, on your mind? Do you feel less connected to the world, or more connected to those around you? Perhaps you have a better relationship with your phone than I do. *shrug*

I know I sound like a real doomsayer with my dark cloak (I’m not really wearing a cloak, but damn I think I’d like to) and and my seemingly pessimistic outlook. It’s not my intention to negate social media’s power to instigate positive change; just look at iWeigh, Help Refugees, Political Jules or Coppafeel. All good people using a Instagram to better spread their message of good health, equality and better body image across all platforms. I also believe the people who have really nailed social media are the heroes, the mums and dads of Facebook and Instagram, using Facebook to share with friends and family. That’s the whole point, and I personally think that we’re missing it as a younger generation. It’s so easy to lose ourselves in a business who’s main priority is traffic across all its apps. It doesn’t care what the traffic is, whether its bad or good, friend or foe, wizard or troll (I’ve been re-reading the Harry Potter books again), only that we’re there and we’re active. 

I reckon I really am an old woman at heart; so shoot me. I love my plants and painting, and I dream of living in some log cabin with an art studio, with a huge allotment, my main man and a couple of dergs, Bob Ross style. I love making music and getting on stage and performing, I love acting and I love media and I love galleries, I adore bookshops, beaches, forests. The whole, soppy whack. So what? I’m a romantic.

I’m tired of stalling real conversations because either they or I have been sucked into apps, emails or jigsaw puzzles (it me). I want to live in this real world and create in this real world, but the discontent and conflict I feel is sometimes really, really irritating; I don’t want to use social media for my art, but it seems the only way you’re to be judged by labels and music makers. How much of a following do you have? How many likes do you pull in? How often do you post? It’s not about your art any more, it’s how good you are at selling it. I have enough trouble dealing with all the cogs turning in my brainbox without thinking about all this bullshit. And it goes beyond all that, it’s really irrelevant what career I choose, social media is addictive regardless of what we do. 

So fuck that. I play the game when I have to, but I’m not bending over backwards for it.

On Saying Goodbye

The following is the eulogy that I read in front of the 500 people that showed up to my mother’s funeral. I loved my mother more than most sons. She was my life in a lot of ways.

First, seeing all of you here fills myself and my family's hearts with joy. My sisters and I know that my mother is loved, but seeing you all here leaves no doubt that Judith Margaret Biancalana left a positive mark on this earth, a feat that not all are able to claim. You are all a tribute and testament to, and ultimately, the result of a life lived unburdened by regret, the “what ifs”, or could-haves. My mother lived a full life, one with many happy, glorious times, memories we all share. Thank you. The pain of our immediate loss is dulled and is washing away at the sight of all of you. She's looking down and thinking she must have done something right. In fact, I believe that’s how she would have put it, “I guess I did something right.” To me, that would be my mother grossly understating the truth. To me, she did near everything right. But she'd never boast, she'd never shine a light on her life's achievement. If she was anything she was humble, honest, and set in her ways. But she really did do so many things right.

Father Donal, thank you. We have known you for more than 30 years and are beyond pleased that you’re our celebrant today. My mother is happy, I can assure you, as are we all. Through her time at the hospital recently and well before, you were and are such a wonderful friend to Mom.

To Mrs. Pat Casey, one of mom’s lifelong friends, for being there every single day my mother was in the hospital, 55+ days, for being a source of comfort to our whole family and to, most of all, mom. No one but she had her dedication and love. Pat was there 27 years ago when my father passed, and she was there for Mom. Her consistent presence and counsel will never be forgotten.

And one more but not least thank you to the team of doctors and medical professionals that helped my mother over the years, specifically Dr. Aileen Whelan, Dr. Donald Ho, Dr. Fred Lui, Dr. David Kursrock, Dr. Khan and Dr. Lee. Were it not for their dedication, expertise and guidance, my mother would have truly been lost, our family without a path or plan. You helped extend mom’s life and we’re all so thankful to have had those days and memories.

The poem says "grieve if you must" but if you all can, remember mom at her best, funniest, her most lively. What I’ve written tries at that.

Judith Margaret Baldassare was born on November 9th, 1940 in a bit of a shanty called McKees Rocks, just outside of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Joseph, who worked for the “local men’s group” running numbers for them, booking sports and betting. Without too much detail, my mother was raised to be street smart. Whatever she learned in school paled in comparison to the education she received from life in those years, living above a pool hall with her aunt and uncle, their children and her father and her sister.

My mother was older sister to Eileen, who was the polar opposite of my mother. Aunt Eileen was brash and crazy and untethered. My mother was responsible and studious and obedient. My mother and her sister Eileen were very much alike though in that they were both a joy to know, a joy to be around. They accepted each other much the way my sisters and I accept each other. And today, we remember our Aunt Eileen as well.

Mom moved to San Jose to live with her aunt and uncle in the mid fifties and attended Willow Glen High School. She was very involved in activities, was her student body president and was a beautiful example of her own will and drive to affect her world in a positive manner by participating in athletics and school programs as much as time would allow. She was smart about her money at a young age and bought her first car, a 1957 Chevy with money she earned herself. In 1958 she graduated.

Famed sportswriter Ring Lardner said, “The family you come from isn’t as important as the family you’re going to have.”

In the early sixties, Mom went to work in San Francisco at an insurance agency as an administrative assistant. It was there she met her best friend, Barbara Fenich, and it was Barbara that set my mother up on a date with a guy named Mario. She fell in love and they married in 1966.

Soon after they married, in 1968 they had Diane, 1970 Debbie arrived and in 1972, my fathers last try for a boy, I was born. My mother wrote me a letter after my father passed letting me know how much she loved me and that that day I was born how proud they both were, delighted they had a son. I can remember feeling more proud reading that letter than I have ever felt. Under that strict exterior was a heart as big as her, and in all her children she saw unlimited potential. She saw humor, athleticism, intelligence and poise. When we were awkward she was stalwart. When we faltered she let us solve the problem and fix it, and when we succeeded she was the first to congratulate and beam with pride. She pushed us to take chances, to achieve. To work hard, to persevere, and to never give up.

Angelita Lim is quoted as saying “I saw that you were perfect, and so I loved you. Then I saw that you were not perfect and I loved you even more.”

This is how my mother felt about all of her children’s spouses. My mother had picked up telling me over the past decade, "you better thank your lucky stars." She refers to me thanking the stars for my wife, Laura, whom she loved, and I tend to agree. Her sons in law, Gary and Rob were beyond good and kind to my mother and she was very lucky to have them in her life. She loved her entire family equally, in law or otherwise, without fail.

Billie Jean King once said, “Champions keep playing until they get it right.”

Mom was competitive. She loved the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers, and of course the Giants and Niners and Warriors. She was present for every one of our games, whether it was baseball or softball or basketball or volleyball, she was there. She was involved in everything we ever did. Coaching, managing, running things. And if she wasn’t managing from the dugout, or driving the car to a tournament, she was always cheering on the sidelines. Taking carloads of friends of ours to teepee the houses of Burlingame. Mom made sure that a dull moment was never had.

My sisters would be the picture of athletic and academic achievement where I, had two hobbies, baseball and driving my mother nuts.

But no one could handle me like my mother handled me. More than once. And I expected and deserved every whalloping I got. But as tough as my mother was, she taught me what it meant to love unconditionally, to care about whatever we did, whether it was school, sports or even much later in my career as a writer — that I give everything I have to everything I do with passion and focus, and most of all, with a fire inside. And no matter how hard I may have fought against her at times, no matter how many mistakes I'd make, she let me make those mistakes, it’s my belief, for two reasons: because it turned me into an adult, helping me learn and grow and stand firm, on my own two feet and the second reason, so that she could say with no doubt, "See? What'd I tell you."

In the early 80s, when I and Debbie were still at OLA, and Diane was at Mercy High, she was a teachers aide at OLA, and then the school secretary in 1985. She was also a yard duty — the best yard duty, as any of the boys in my class can attest. Anyone that knew the kids in my class knew we weren’t the nicest children, we were mischievous, and my mother would have none of it. We never said no to her, she was the law and we all respected her. Because she was firm and resilient and fair. A perfect example, if two boys were fist fighting, my mother would sometimes take her time in breaking it up. I always wondered why. I found out later that she’d let the brawl go if she liked the kid that was winning.

In her time as secretary at OLA, there are many many stories to tell, but one which I truly love. On no particular day, a student walked in and said "Mrs. B. I don't feel good," the child holding their stomach. My mom said, “Okay, what's wrong?” The kids said, “Well, I threw up.” My mother, always skeptical of kids faking so they could get a free trip home said, "Oh yeah? Where’d you throw up." The kid said, "In the upper yard" thinking, there’s no way Mrs. B would follow up on that. My mother stood up, took the kid’s hand and said, "Show me where you threw up." So they walked to the upper yard. In the end, the student was back in class. My mother knew which kids were faking, which kids weren’t and which one’s cried wolf all too often. I think more children spent more days in school during her years behind that desk, because unless real circumstances were afoot, kids were staying in school. My mother treated each one of those kids as she would have treated her own.

There are more stories. But her time at OLA was about the children. It’s what she cared about most, and it is encapsulated by her incredible work ethic, never leaving her desk until every bit of work was done leaving nothing for the next day, her desk clean each night, no matter the hour. Thankfully for us, my father was an amazing cook, as some nights she got home very late. In that, she had a dedication to our catholic education, bearing three children that went kindergarten to college degree in Catholic school, my sister Diane and I finishing at St. Mary’s College of California and my sister Debbie at Santa Clara University. Even after my father passed, she made it her personal quest to put us through the best education money could buy. The two of them, my father and mother, sacrificed everything for our education, for our wellbeing, and we never wanted for anything. Our childhoods and and the years that followed were always privileged ones, in our eyes. At times we couldn’t rub two nickels together, as my mother liked to say, but we would be educated, we would be happy and we would always have family.

There’s a great line in Cormac McCarthy’s “All the Pretty Horses” — “Scared money can’t win.”

She loved to play cards, to gamble. As a young family we would take vacations to north and south Tahoe in the summers and winters accordingly, always close to casinos. We kids played in the arcade while my father played keno and kept a close eye on the bank account, while my mother played black jack, 12 hours or more at a time. Sometimes she won and sometimes she'd come away empty. I remember one night we sat down for dinner at a restaurant in one of the hotels up there, maybe Harrahs, and my mother informed us that she had just played black jack with none other than Clint Eastwood. We kids wanted autographs. "Did you get his autograph" we asked excited. "No I certainly didn't. I got up and left.” We looked at her incredulously. She went on, “He sat down right next to me. He ruined the table" she said, "He screwed up the deal. They let him get up and deal the damn cards." We couldn’t believe she didn’t get Clint Eastwood’s autograph. She couldn’t believe the Pit Boss at Harrahs allowed Clint Eastwood to handle play dealer with my mom’s chips on the line.

When I lived in Louisiana for a couple years, my sister Debbie and my mother visited and we ended up on a riverboat in New Orleans one day. My mother and I were playing black jack side by side, as she won hand after hand after hand. Soon a crowd gathered. The other players at the table had stopped playing to let my mother continue, just she and the dealer. Soon I noticed as I sat next to her that two large men with cowboy hats were standing right behind her. She kept winning and they kept watching, too close a watch for me. I had my eye on these two guys in case they did something, follow my mom away from the table — I didn't know, I was worried. By the time my mother played her last hand she had 7 or 8 thousand dollars in front of her. The crowd applauded as she finished by beating the dealer a final time. We got up, my mother oblivious to the two men behind her. I hooked my arm with hers, to “protect” her (there was nothing I could Have done. I was 165 lbs. soaking wet, these guys were enormous). One of the cowboys stopped my mom, put his huge hand gently on my her shoulder and said, "ma'am, it was a genuine pleasure to watch you play black jack." I sighed with relief. We cashed out, and I remember that night being our favorite in New Orleans.

Taking trips to casinos around the Bay Area with her best friends Mary Meyer and Mary Lycett and Judy O’Rourke and in recent years friends like Molly Mitchell and Father Flavian have been her escape and minor vacations - strangely with the winner of the group usually being father Flavian, not my mother. 

A.A. Milne says perfectly — “If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day so I never have to live without you.”

No quote could better sum up my mothers great love, her reason for being and source of joy and pride, her grandchildren. They became her life the day Samantha was born in 1997. Watching her hold, talk to and play with her grandchildren, you understood true passion and love. She had so much pride in, and so much peace and joy filled my mother with each of her 8 little babies - Samantha, Ashleigh, Jessica, Mario, Dominic, Daniella Lucia and her youngest Joseph. When I say grandma loved you 8 kids I understate the word “loved” by miles. No one could love you kids more. A perfect example is when Samantha was born. Mom told us she wanted to be in the background and let Rob and Diane enjoy their new baby, to give them their space and not be too intrusive and mothering. So instead, not able to hold in her pride and love,  she turned to walking the hospital hallways wearing a sweatshirt that read #1 Grandma. Not too subtle but classic Mom.  When my father passed in 1989 her heart most definitely broke. My sister Debbie contends that her heart began to beat again when Samantha was born.

Finally, Tennessee Williams writes, “To be free is to have achieved your life.”

And after the stories I’ve told, illustrating the life she lived, she is certainly free. In the past two months my mother endured, fought tooth and nail, clawed. She fought until her body simply couldn’t any longer.

As we say goodbye to mom, grandma, Judy, Mrs. B we remember her fondly, happily, with her set ways, with her "don't care about what other people are doing care about what YOURE doing" attitude. We remember her as the only Giants fan that didn't like Will Clark because he swore using the worst of swear words on live tv in 1987 after they won the west, “no I STILL DON’T like him”, she'd say decades later, we remember the school secretary that ushered hundreds of kids to and from class, teachers and principals in and out of OLA, we remember the mother and friend that displayed an unmatched generosity and passion that would put her in front of a bus for a loved one if need be, the mother in law that never minced words and always, always gave as good as she got, we remember the grandmother that filled a living room with Christmas presents to rival Santa’s workshop, gifts piled shoulder high making all her grandchildren lucky and insane with happiness, we remember the woman that fell in love with my father and created a beautiful, strong family that she knows will survive any hardship or bump in the road. 

This is what I believe over everything: 

As are with all works of art, we all have a favorite, our favorite piece whatever it may be, we cherish it because of the emotion, true feeling that it brings out in us, the way it affects us, be it a painting, a sculpture, song, prayer. And we always talk about those amazing creations in the present tense as we hold them close. Because works of art are infinite. They live forever.

In the hearts of your family and friends Mom, you are loved, you are happy, you are smiling and joyful, and you live forever. Mom, I love you. You are my favorite work of art.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has several close pals in tech, including friends he’s defended online or taken for Tesla test drives. 

Here’s a closer look at some of the friendships among tech CEOs.

As far back as 2016, Dorsey said Musk was “a really good model” for how to use Twitter. More recently, Dorsey said in an interview that Musk is his favorite Twitter follow, to which Musk responded, “Thanks Jack, Twitter rocks!”

Then, in January, Dorsey and Musk spoke over video chat in front of Twitter employees and Musk gave Dorsey advice on how to improve the platform. 

In March, as Dorsey faces a possible ouster at the hands of an activist hedge fund, Musk publicly tweeted his support of the CEO. 

“Just want to say that I support @jack as Twitter CEO,” Musk tweeted. “He has a good <3.”

Ellison and Jobs used to be neighbors in Woodside, California, and the pair often went hiking together. It was during one of those hikes that Ellison helped Jobs plot how to regain control of Apple after he was ousted — Ellison even suggested buying Apple himself and installing Jobs as CEO.

It was Jobs who came up with the idea that Apple should acquire his company, Next, instead. When Ellison questioned how the pair would make money, Jobs said to him, “Larry, this is why it’s so important that I’m your friend. You don’t need any more money,” Ellison said in a commencement speech in 2016. 

Ellison said he spent time with Jobs in his final days, taking shorter walks around the block with him as he became weaker. Ellison gave a eulogy at Jobs’ funeral.

In the early days of Musk’s tenure at the electric car maker, he took Brin and Page on a test drive. Unfortunately, a software bug prevented the car from going any faster than 10 miles per hour, Musk recounted at a company shareholder meeting in 2016. Despite “the world’s worst demo,” however, the duo ended up investing in Tesla anyway, Musk said. 

Over the years, Musk and Page especially have become close friends — Musk even sometimes sleeps at Page’s house when he’s in town, and Page once said he’d rather leave his money to Musk than give it away to charity.

Brin, Page, and Musk also reportedly used to hang out in a Google-owned apartment and brainstorm ideas.

Benioff began working on Salesforce with Ellison’s blessing, and Ellison became an investor, putting in $2 million early on.

Neither man was very interested in meeting the other, but they ended up hitting it off. Soon after, Gates asked Buffett for a business book recommendation, and Buffett loaned him his copy of “Business Adventures” by John Brookes — Gates still has it today. 

Since then, the duo has done everything from play table tennis together to participate in Berkshire Hathaway’s annual newspaper toss competition. And Gates, his wife Melinda, and Buffett launched the Giving Pledge together in 2010, vowing to give away the majority of their wealth in their lifetimes or in their wills. 

While Buffett owns a major stake in Apple, he’s said that he’ll never invest in Microsoft due to his friendship with Gates.

Dropbox CEO Drew Houston and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg have apparently been friends for years, with the former often turning to the latter for advice. 

“[Zuckerberg’s] given me a lot of advice just on company scaling, how do you organize people, how do you set up these systems,” Houston told Bloomberg in 2015.

That same year, a Fast Company profile on Dropbox described Houston as a “close friend” of Zuckerberg’s. The pair has been photographed together everywhere from Houston’s birthday party at a ping-pong club to the prestigious Allen & Co. conference in Sun Valley, Idaho. 

This past February, Houston was appointed to Facebook’s board of directors.

And Larry Ellison and Marc Benioff have been friends for decades, even though their respective enterprise software companies are technically rivals.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has several close pals in tech, including friends he’s defended online or taken for Tesla test drives. 

Here’s a closer look at some of the friendships among tech CEOs.

While it’s not clear if Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and Twitter and Square CEO Jack Dorsey actually hang out in real life, they do seem to have a solid virtual friendship. 

As far back as 2016, Dorsey said Musk was “a really good model” for how to use Twitter. More recently, Dorsey said in an interview that Musk is his favorite Twitter follow, to which Musk responded, “Thanks Jack, Twitter rocks!”

Then, in January, Dorsey and Musk spoke over video chat in front of Twitter employees and Musk gave Dorsey advice on how to improve the platform. 

In March, as Dorsey faces a possible ouster at the hands of an activist hedge fund, Musk publicly tweeted his support of the CEO.

Oracle founder Larry Ellison and late Apple CEO Steve Jobs were friends for 25 years before Jobs’ death in 2011. 

Ellison and Jobs used to be neighbors in Woodside, California, and the pair often went hiking together. It was during one of those hikes that Ellison helped Jobs plot how to regain control of Apple after he was ousted — Ellison even suggested buying Apple himself and installing Jobs as CEO.

It was Jobs who came up with the idea that Apple should acquire his company, Next, instead. When Ellison questioned how the pair would make money, Jobs said to him, “Larry, this is why it’s so important that I’m your friend. You don’t need any more money,” Ellison said in a commencement speech in 2016.

Signing a record contract can be scary, confusing, exciting and joyful all at the same time. But no matter what, there’s some key info you need to know before you sign the dotted line…

Music attorney Mark Quail took some time to answer the most important questions about record contracts for today’s musicians.

Quail has been practicing music law since 1990. He currently advises leading electronic musicians Richie Hawtin, Dubfire, Art Department, John Acquaviva, Matador, Pleasurekraft, Mathew Jonson and Shaun Frank. Quail also sits on the executive and advisory board for the Association for Electronic Music and hosts the successful The Music Law Podcast.

We asked Mark everything you need to know about modern recording contracts including how to avoid getting stuck in a bad one, how to protect your rights as a musician, and some clauses to look out for before you commit.

What does ‘recording contract’ mean in today’s streaming-first music landscape?

In many respects, today’s record contract is much the same as yesterday’s record record contract even in this “streaming-first” music landscape.

In most cases the record contract will seek a complete transfer of ownership of the music copyright in the master recordings from the original artist to the record company. The record company usually seeks to hold onto the copyrights forever.

This is how record companies build their catalogs and make themselves more attractive for sale to those seeking to buy media companies in the future.

The record contract will seek the musician’s exclusive services for a period of time which could be defined as a period of years or a number of singles or albums that would have to be delivered to fulfill the contract.

Do musicians need a record contract to be successful?

The days of having to spend large amounts of money in a recording studio to produce sound recordings and having to maintain an entire shipping network to transport physical goods to thousands of retailers are over.

Those were the main duties of a record company in the past and they decided what was released to the public and what wasn’t.

Digital audio workstations and digital music distribution have removed those barriers.

What’s required today is a method of getting the artist’s work and image into the mind of the public. This requires money (obviously) and a skilled team of social media managers and other marketers who are up-to-date on the particulars of social media promotion and the best marketing opportunities and sponsorships available.

The audience available to an artist once they’ve reached a certain level of success can be increased even further through the power of a major label marketing team.

For example: Think of “SoundCloud rappers.” Some reach a pretty good level of success by simply releasing music on SoundCloud. But moving on to greater success often means signing with a major label to reach a wider audience.

It’s a model that’s very common in today’s music industry. The label minimizes risk by making business decisions based on the measured success an independent artists has already accrued. Which means independent success is important whether you plan on signing with a label in the future or not.

How have record contracts changed?

Record contracts have generally always sought to acquire and hold copyrights. What has changed is the method of distribution.

What can make a record contract bad?

There’s a few ways to answer this question…

Allow me to get philosophical for a moment: Any contractual terms that unduly benefit one side of a record contract more than the other will cause bitterness and resentment in the future.

Those feelings will end up poisoning the relationship between an artist and record company when they both really need to work with each other in order to succeed.

What most good lawyers try to do when negotiating a record contract on behalf of an artist is make sure that the contract’s terms give each side what they need.

In any commercial venture where creativity is important, the most prudent way to proceed is to create a relationship where both sides are happy and are willing to work with each other. In most cases with a major label that relationship can last for 5 to 7 years or longer.

If the relationship is a failure it can often mean the ruin of an artistic career. So be careful.

Here are some examples of specific deal points to avoid depending on your situation. There are entire books on this but I will just provide three off the top of my head:

A recording commitment that is too long, where so many records are required to fulfill the contract that it takes too many years to complete.

Loss of creative control. The terms of the contract allow too much interference from the record company that might dilute the artist’s vision for their music.  That drives artists crazy and they start looking for ways to get out of the deal.

Contractual terms that permit the record company to make too many deductions for packaging, foreign territory sales and free goods when calculating the artist’s royalties.

There’s tons more to consider when avoiding a bad contract. But for the sake of this discussion, these three points are worth keeping in mind.

Both sides have to benefit or else the relationship is going to bottom out and become unproductive.

Particular contract terms will depend on the bargaining power of the artist. Which is why it’s important to monitor and track your own stats and bring them to the table as part of a contract negotiation.

A new artist with no real history of earnings will not get the same terms as a artist with a proven record of strong earnings.

These terms can include:

Royalty rates

The number of singles to be delivered

Whether the record company will pay for a video

The amount of money the record company will spend on social media campaigns

Whether the record company will also participate in the moneys earned from music publishing, merchandising and live performances

From a technical, legal standpoint a contract that is well written and contains clear and unambiguous deal terms can also be considered a good contract.

Poorly written contracts create more questions than they provide in answers. More questions means more money spent on lawyers which may mean going to court to argue the matter before a judge.

What are the benefits of long-term record contracts?

In all honesty, I do not think there are any benefits for artists in a long-term contract that requires more than three albums to be delivered.

All record contracts are structured as a series of options that are completely at the discretion of the record company. While an artist might think they have a guaranteed distributor for their music for a long period of time, in actual fact they could be dropped at any point by the record company.

A short-term contract allows artists to move to another record company upon fulfillment of the first record if they want to. Circumstances can change quickly and it’s good to keep your options open.

The best case scenario is a situation where the artist builds their popularity in the marketplace over a period of two or three albums, completes the first contract and is then in a position to do another record deal while their career is on the upswing and while they have much better negotiating leverage.

What is a 360° Record contract?

As the name suggests, 360° contracts aim to cover all parts of artist income and label services.

There are generally four sources of income that an artist has:

Income from sound recordings

Income from songs that the artist composes

Income from sales of merchandise (T-shirts etc.)

Live performance income

360° contracts encompass all or most of these four elements.

A 360° contract seeks to allow the record company to receive monies from all four streams of income listed above, and ideally provides services to artists in order to maximize the monies from each of these areas of revenue.

Are 360° record contracts good for artists?

Some artists will need a large injection of money into their careers in order to get to the next level. If that’s the case, they may have no other choice but to permit an investor like a record company a more secure way, like a 360° contract, to recover that investment.

For most doctors, a few of those ten words would include their medical career. It’s no coincidence. Compared to most jobs, being a physician is a key feature of our identities. I’m not saying it’s right. I’m not saying it’s wrong. I’m just telling you that whether you realize it or not, being a doctor is a big part of who you are.

Here’s a few reasons why your job has grown to define you.

While all of your undergrad friends were goofing off in between underwater basket weaving and ultimate frisbee practice, you were cramming organic chemistry, physics, biology, histology, and physiology into your brain. You may feel like patients don’t respect your opinion, consultants dump on you constantly, and hospital administrators see you as a replaceable cog in the machine, but the rest of society really respects you and what you do. How many times in your life has someone treated you nicer or with more respect once they found out you were a doctor?

I’m the most low-profile guy you’ll meet. My wardrobe could be best described as “homeless beach bum.” I never volunteer that what I do for a living. Getting me to admit I’m a doctor in public usually involves a game of 20 questions. Nonetheless, I realize that people hold doctors with higher regard than most careers. On some subconscious level that makes us feel good about who we are and what we do.

Income

No one should become a doctor for the money. It’s not worth it, and there are easier ways to get rich. Just about every full-time physician is comfortably in the top five percent of income. And with a little hustling, most of you could be in the top one percent. If you are wise, you are living on a small fraction of that income and saving/investing the rest.

Money isn’t everything. But it sure is important to a lot of people. I’d be willing to bet that the kind of person reading a physician finance blog with their spare time is someone who is a fan of money. Even if you don’t identify as “rich,” you will eventually identify yourself as someone who is financially secure and able to provide a comfortable life for your family.

Time on the clock

I consider myself lucky. Even though I work a lot of crappy hours — think 4 a.m. on Christmas or every other weekend of my life — I don’t work a lot of total hours. Most full-time emergency physicians I know work 30 to 40 hours a week. Most of my surgeon and OB friends work 60 to 80 hours a week.

There is no way that the thing you do more than anything else during your waking hours isn’t a big part of your identity. It’s just simple math.

Our job is a privilege

Being a physician becomes so routine that it is easy to forget how cool it is. Some of you deliver babies, cure cancer or perform complex surgeries. Others prevent diseases from ever occurring and help patients navigate the complex medical system. My fellow emergency physicians routinely bring people back from the dead!

Sure, this job has its headaches. There are patients you can’t help, patients who don’t need help and patients who don’t want help. There are mountains of bureaucracy that seem designed to prevent you from doing your job. But at the end of the day, you can say you have a job that helps people. What you do matters. Don’t forget it.

Conclusion

This post is not intended to be a career pep talk. You are more than your job. We are put in this world to do more than work. The physician blogosphere is jam-packed with stories of docs dreaming of retiring ASAP and leaving medicine behind. We should be allowed to choose whatever path we want. We aren’t beholden to society to keep working a job we don’t enjoy or continue earning money we don’t need to buy stuff we don’t like to impress people we don’t care about.

If you love your job — great! You have a job making a positive impact in people’s lives while earning incredible money and unparalleled respect. If you are burnt out or dreaming of early retirement, just realize that being a doctor is a big part of who you are. It would be naive to think the thing you spent a decade or more training for and thing you spend the most waking hours doing isn’t a key aspect of how you see yourself.

It is OK to want to be done with medicine. Just make sure you have a plan for what is taking its place. By the way — my ten words would be: “hard-working, dark-humored, beach-loving, family-oriented, emergency doc.”
