Ages ago, @kikidiesunddas tagged me to post nine favorite movies, and I’m taking this as opportunity to put together another set of Seasonal Recs because of course I am!
Generally what I want in December are movies with some sort of combination of elements from this list: - snow - coats - kinda sad - but also kinda cozy all the same?
These vary in the amounts of those, but you will probably notice the trend.
Loosely grouped into sets below, for your darkest night of the year here are:
Nine Favorite Wintry Movies for December
The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford
This is a very long very beautiful movie of the Masterpiece class, a type of movie I actually think has more to do with shape & feel than necessarily any other quality, just to start this list off with a bold opinion. The reason why I really like it beyond just respecting it as a feat, is because I am a sucker for anything that feels like a storybook, and this big does. There is voice over, everything looks like a picture (Roger Deakins CBE!!), it sounds like this—it is big saga hours with this one. A very American saga, in the American west, telling a very American tale of self-determination and jealousy and myth-making. Winter points: a lot of snow, a lot of coats, half the compositions look like an Andrew Wyeth painting (deliberate). Good for curling up with a mug and letting a long tale unspool.
Cold War
One of my very favorite films of 2018, Cold War is an elliptical star-crossed love story between two musicians loosely based on the lives of director Paweł Pawlikowski’s parents, shot with stark moody gorgeous black & white framing that fits its bleak passion purrrrfectly. It’s not really like, “happy,” but that’s why I like it. As I’ve said before and will say again, “come back to me when your characters are smoking hollowly on the snowy streets of East Berlin in 1951 waiting in vain for their lover to arrive so they can clandestinely cross the border into the west, because that’s the most romantic shit I know!!”
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
I’ve never written about Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy because I don’t know where to start. It might be the non-Lord of the Rings movie I have seen the most times in my life, and interestingly, they are also my favorite book-to-film adaptations! What’s that about! Anyway Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is my entire bag and bundle and I love it to the depths. So why is it for December and not some other part of the the damp, raw winter when the mood is right for Cold War espionage? Because author John Le Carré passed away this month, love u forever spy grandpa ♥, and because of the way the screenplay keeps coming back to that one office Christmas party. Genuinely perhaps my single top narrative film device of all time. One time I just thought about Julio Iglesias’s ‘La Mer’ cover and got goosebumps. MAGNIFIQUE CINEMA.
🌨️
The Grand Budapest Hotel
I think The Grand Budapest Hotel is the most, like, cohesive Wes Anderson, the most Unified Theory of Wes Anderson, because it is actually *about* aesthetics, and the thesis is: the world is awful and sometimes you just arrange small pretty things symmetrically to cope. Who can’t relate! I mean I fully respect that you may not, Wes Anderson is a specific taste that I have seen best described by Demi Adejuyigbe, positively, as “essentially whitesploitation movies,” but if you are also into it, this is the best one for December. Every mountain looks like it was made of powdered sugar and icing. Half of this movie is about pastry. Alexandre Desplat is in the background like *whimsical jingling*. Honestly this might be the most traditionally Christmas film on this list.
In Bruges
Otherwise, it’s In Bruges, as it canonically takes place at Christmastime. Mostly what In Bruges is though is very fucking Irish, by which I mean very fucking Catholic, as my professor explained himself when this movie, which takes place I THINK YOU KNOW, closed out our ‘Ireland In Film’ class. Anyway I think it’s the nearest modern thing I’ve seen to a passion play, and gets too often quoted by the wrong people for the wrong reasons when under the spiky language it’s actually a wonderfully philosophically sober movie, easily Martin McDonagh’s best, and the perfect combination of mortality & hope for the darkest night of the year. Happy Christmas.
Force Majeure
If you are isolating away from relatives this season, may I recommend Force Majeure for a hit of that classic holiday feeling: being cooped up with your family and going out of your mind!! A fantastic and funny domestic chaos drama set at a ski resort, where like a third of the scene transitions are just a sudden shot of the mountain while overly dramatic Vivaldi loudly plays, as a joke, and every time I just lose it. This had a generally considered “unnecessary” English language remake recently, but I have not seen it, who has—I am definitely recommending the original Swedish.
🌨️
Bright Young Things
Bright Young Things is Stephen Fry’s adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s Vile Bodies, starring every actor in Britain. They are ALL here, and they are truly all committed, but as is so often the case, I think my special commendation is going to James McAvoy, giving it his patented 101% as always. Anyway this is about young people during the interwar period and begins full of blithe parties and then just gets progressively more forlorn from this already semi-secretly so forlorn beginning, so was designed specially for me in a tailor shop, basically. I believe it is a film for the end of the year because of the aforementioned parties-yet-forlorn thing, and because while the movie does not, the novel expressly takes place in December, and I think the story just feels like it does, somehow.
The Thin Man
A classic, quippy 1930s detective caper starring a very hilarious, very adorable, very drunk married couple and their dog. Nick & Nora Charles are just a pair of tipsy goodtime girls who love each other so much and also have to solve a crime, WHAT a delight. Imagine Gomez & Morticia Addams but instead of high goths they’re drunk art deco gumshoes flirting their way through a whodunit. And, one of the centerpieces is a big boozy holiday party—it’s the perfect winter break watch.
Phantom Thread
THE New Year’s Eve movie. It covers several seasons, but true Threadheads know—this is a New Year’s Eve flick. And it’s perfect for that. It’s also just….perfect?? As I told a friend recently who had been under the impression that it was just a costume drama literally about costumes and not for him, no it IS for us. This movie is, fully intentionally, A Scream. It’s a three-hander battle of wills between Lesley Manville, Vicky Krieps, and Daniel Day Lewis in violet socks, with a completely off the tits Jonny Greenwood score and the single kinkiest scene I’ve ever seen in a mainstream Regal cinema. In January of this year one of my local arthouse theaters got their hands on one of the handful of 70mm prints that Paul Thomas Anderson had made and had a special one-night screening of this movie that had come out just two years previous, and the 380-seat theater sold out, because everyone who loves this movie is a full freak. For freaks: Phantom Thread.

Benedict Cumberbatch is also disliked on this site NOT for being ugly but because of racist, homophobic, and anti-autistic comments at the height of his fame when the people liked him for playing a gay man as autistic coded (a real gay man! Who was probably not autistic!). People call him ugly because he’s the only man in the world who looks the way he does.
good fucking lord
let me find that post where I about DISPROVED 99% OF THOSE STATEMENTS, hm?
okay, HAVE ALL THE REASONS WHY EVERYTHING Y’ALL THINK ABOUT CUMBERBATCH IS WRONG EXCEPT FOR THE AUTISM COMMENTS AND EVEN THOSE WERE LESS BAD THAN WHAT YOU THINK.
also, since you can’t go on wikipedia:
Cumberbatch is a straight ally and in July 2013 officiated at the same-sex marriage of friends. For International Women’s Day 2014, he was a signatory of Amnesty International’s letter to the Prime Minister David Cameron for women’s rights in Afghanistan. Cumberbatch identifies as a feminist.
In 2014, Cumberbatch publicly backed “Hacked Off” and its campaign for UK press self-regulation by “safeguarding the press from political interference while also giving vital protection to the vulnerable.”
In a November 2014 cover story for Out promoting The Imitation Game, Cumberbatch opened up about sexual experimentation during his time in boarding schools stating, “While there was experimentation, it had never occurred to me as, ‘Oh, this is that!’ It was just boys and their penises, the same way with girls and vaginas and boobs. It wasn’t out of desire.” LGBTgroup Stonewall released a statement praising Cumberbatch’s comments, saying, “Seeing someone in the public eye – especially somebody as influential as Benedict – talking positively around gay issues, is powerful for young lesbian, gay and bisexual people. It is often difficult for those growing up to find role models who demonstrate that it is equally okay to be gay or straight.”
Cumberbatch is a founding member of the “Save Soho” campaign which aims “to protect and nurture iconic music and performing arts venues in Soho.” In an open letter published in The Guardian on 31 January 2015, Cumberbatch, amongst others, asked for pardons of all gay and bisexual men who were convicted under the same now-defunct “indecency” laws as Alan Turing was (whom Cumberbatch portrayed in The Imitation Game).
also:
Cumberbatch is an ambassador for The Prince’s Trust.
He is a supporter and patron of organisations focused on using the arts to help disadvantaged young people including Odd Arts, Anno’s Africa and Dramatic Need.
Since portraying Stephen Hawking in 2004, he has been an ambassador, and in 2015 patron, for the Motor Neurone Disease Association and in 2014 did the Ice Bucket Challengefor the organisation.
He also set up a recovery fund for the benefit of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association.
Cumberbatch has donated artworks for charities and fundraisers including the Willow Foundation, and Thomas Coram Foundation for Children.
In 2003, Cumberbatch joined the Stop the War Coalitionprotest in London against the Iraq War.
He addressed activists in a 2010 protest sponsored by the Trade Union Congress in Westminster on the suggested risks to the arts due to spending cuts expected in the Spending Review.
In 2013, he protested against what he perceived were civil liberties violations by the UK Government.
Together with Prince Philip, Cumberbatch presented 85 young people with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at St James’s Palace on 19 March 2014. “Our ambition is to extend this opportunity to hundreds of thousands across the UK”, Cumberbatch said on behalf of the youth awards programme.
In May 2014, he joined Prince William and Ralph Lauren at Windsor Castle for a cancer awareness and fundraising gala for the benefit of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust. Cumberbatch stated, “Cancer isn’t a disease that needs much awareness, but it does need continued funding for research.”In September 2014, he participated in a video campaign for Stand Up To Cancer.
Cumberbatch posed for photographer Jason Bell for an exhibition at Pall Mall, London from 16–20 September 2014 to mark 10 years of the “Give Up Clothes For Good” charity campaign, which has raised £17 million for Cancer Research UK.
In September 2015, Cumberbatch condemned the UK government’s response to the migrant crisis in a speech to theatregoers during a curtain call at a performance of Hamlet, for which he stars.
He also fronted a video campaign to help the charity Save The Children in its mission to aid young Syrian refugees.
He was one of the signatories of an open letter, published in The Guardian, criticising the government for its actions regarding the refugee problem.
He also gave nightly speeches after his curtain call as Hamletat the Barbican in London, asking for donations to help Syrian refugees. At the end of the run, the audience contributed more than £150,000 for Save the Children.
Cumberbatch was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2015 Birthday Honours for services to the performing arts and to charity.
ah, yeah, he said a few ignorant things plus a bunch of stuff TUMBLR decided was racist when EVERY DAMNED BLACK ACTOR IN THE BRITISH INDUSTRY THOUGHT DIFFERENT, what a piece of shit, he totally hasn’t done more for charity on his own than all of tumblr put together.
like, fuck’s sake, y’all can go get a life and actually research the bullshit you read? because guess what I was here since 2011 and I was here for the rise and fall of cumberbatch in the tumblr hierarchy and I can 100% assure you I remember ALL of the reasons why ppl hate him.
and 99% of them AREN’T EVEN TRUE. also can it with this dumbass bullshit that he’s homophobic when HE HAS OFFICIATED MARRIAGES OF HIS GAY FRIENDS ffs. y’all aren’t funny. and if turing’s portrayal wasn’t correct complain to the writers and not to HIM who was acting, not writing the damned script.
ps: I’M NOT EVEN INTO THIS GUY but the fact that I know this shit and 99% of tumblr doesn’t while still bashing him just says everything there is to say.
can.
it.

'Wilhelmina Barns-Graham: Sea, Rock, Earth and Ice'. Sheffield Graves Gallery
What can you tell us about Wilhelmina Barns-Graham’s exhibition at the Jerwood Gallery, Hastings?
The show at the Jerwood in Hastings takes as its starting point a work from their permanent collection titled, ‘Winter Landscape’ 1952. This is an important transitionary work between Barns-Graham’s important ‘Glacier’ series of works begun in 1949 and a later group from the early-50s, which looked more at the structure of cliff and rock features in Cornwall. Curated by Jerwood Collections' Lara Wardle, the exhibition overall focuses on Barns-Graham’s fascination with the forms and forces found in nature.
What is it that drew Barns-Graham to depictions of nature, both abstract and representational?
Barns-Graham felt a strong affinity to the landscape and the elements within it from an early age. Being out in nature, be it in Scotland, Cornwall or travelling abroad, was for her a way of finding shapes and forms which could be assimilated into her practice. The landscapes were full of discoveries and her drawings were a notation of these discoveries, to later inform her imagination. She regarded drawings from nature as exercises, as much perceptual as conceptual. She had no problem with working with both figurative and abstract approaches simultaneously.
This same exhibition, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham: Sea, Rock, Earth and Ice, will then be moving to Graves Art Gallery in Sheffield, 8 December 2018, supplemented with further paintings and drawings. How might these additions change and enhance the exhibition?
Because Graves Art Gallery has more available space for the exhibition, we were able to select an additional group of works that look at the same themes addressed at the Jerwood, but in more depth and at a larger scale, demonstrating a broader range of her stylistic approaches. Included at the Graves, for example, will be the important painting ‘Cliff Face’ 1952, which couldn’t be accommodated at the Jerwood.
Do you have favourite piece from any of these exhibitions?
It’s very hard to choose from the strong group of works in the exhibition, however, if I had to pick one, it would be ‘Clay Workings, Chiusure’ 1954. Using simple brown tones of ink and wash, it is a remarkably sophisticated and multi-faceted depiction of a specific place, perfectly exemplifying her fascination with underlying structures in nature.
There are many further events and exhibitions happening in 2018 and on into 2019. What are your highlights?
While Wilhelmina Barns-Graham: Sea, Rock, Earth and Ice at the Jerwood and then in Sheffield is our main public gallery exhibition for 2018, we also have a substantial group of works being shown in The Art of Collecting at the Mall Galleries 27 June - 4 July, as well as selling exhibitions coming up at Gallagher & Turner in Newcastle upon Tyne and The Watermill in Aberfeldy in September. We’re also delighted that in August a group of late Barns-Graham works will go on display at the Scottish Parliament, Holyrood.
Barns-Graham spent much of her time in Cornwall, and is associated with those from the School of St Ives. What was the importance of St Ives to Barns-Graham?
Barns-Graham was recommended initially to go to Cornwall by the then head of Edinburgh College of Art, Hubert Wellington. Arriving in 1940 she found her way into what was still a relatively small modernist art community of artists with whom she felt a kindred spirit. In the following years she established her own voice within this community, playing a central part to its existence. Clearly the up and down interactions between the artists provided a stimulating milieu, though times were hard for many of them. Inheriting a house near St Andrews in 1960, sharing her time there often gave respite from the intensity of the community, but she always considered St Ives as her primary artistic home.
Establishing herself as a name in Edinburgh and London, in her later years she added the new medium of screen-prints to her work. What led to this development and how, over the years, did her work change?
Barns-Graham had been approached by Kip Gresham (Curwen Studio) around 1990-91 to work with him on making screenprints, which she did successfully, but without being entirely satisfied with the process. She went on to make a small number of prints elsewhere, by invitation, at Dundee Printmakers Workshop and Porthmeor Printmakers, St Ives. In 1998 she was then introduced to Carol Robertson and Robert Adam who had set up their own studio, Graal Press, after leaving Edinburgh Printmakers. After cautious beginnings it was clear that Carol, in specialising in the use of water-based screen-printing inks, was able to offer something very new which excited Barns-Graham. This complimented her work in other media while the collaboration with Carol provided her with a freedom to experiment in new ways. Printing and painting were to feed off each other.
Being a Scot, when Barns-Graham was awarded a CBE in 2001, she wore tartan. What of her Scottish heritage might you be able to see in her artworks, if any at all?
Barns-Graham was very proud of her Scottish heritage. This was of course reinforced when she inherited Balmungo House outside St Andrews, which led to her spending more time in Scotland. Studying at Edinburgh College of Art (1931-37) was crucial to the development of her art, both in her use of colour (for which Scottish art is so well recognised) and, of equal importance, drawing, which was a key element of her training and which played such a vital role her life as an artist. The early influence of her teachers – (Sir) William Gillies and Johnny Maxwell are clear to see in this, while S.J. Peploe and (Sir) William MacTaggart taught her painting.
What made the Trust decide to join Artimage, and what have been the greatest benefits?
One of the main functions of the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust is to work to enhance the reputation and understanding of Wilhelmina Barns-Graham as one of Britain’s most significant 20th century artists. An important part of this is to ensure that we make images of her works from across her long career as widely visible and accessible as possible. Artimage can play an important role in this.

Imagine Tom in swim trunks, a red nose, and the headband, though! Again, Ben gets the short end of the stick when it comes to charity work. Tom gets splashed with a bucket of water into which ice cubes were dropped just seconds before while his nominee Ben gets ice water dumped or thrown on him multiple times. Now Tom gets to enjoy fizzy water, crisps, and dry roasted nuts in a nice warm bar while Ben has to swim in a cold English pond.
I guess that’s how you get a CBE for services to the performing arts and charity.

Beam saber 3 (right shoulder): Light green
Beam saber 4 (right arm): Light green
Tactical Data: Regarded as the most vercitial of project Symphony, the Starlight Waltz is known for it’s speed, and it’s GN drive Tau. Threat level: PRIME
Report: Amazing! Thanks to our computer science team, as well as our fantastic hackers, we managed to get Celestial Bio engineering’s data on there GN drive system! With this even the Gundam from project Hellfire might start lagging behind us. Due to some slight modifications we had to make in order to make sure the GN drive didn’t overload and destroy the Waltz we’ve notice that this test model drive had turned red. We given this drive the name of GN drive Tau. The results are unbelievable! The Starlight Waltz’s speed TRIPLED as soon as the Tau was activated! It was already hard to hit but now I’d dare to say it’s impossible to hit it unless you have a Tau drive as well!!! However...there is a negative side effect to this. The particles the Tau releases, since the original design made by CBE condensed the particles in the air via a system placed all over the suit’s body, are poisonous to humans of all kinds. Without these “GN condensers” if you would we are not only risking the enemy’s men, but our own. I’m currently working with our science team, lead by Dr. Akarui, to develop something or improve upon the Tau drive. Interestingly in the video we got from the CBE data the GN drive glow’s green, our Tau drive glows red. In hindsight we should’ve taken that as a sign that something was wrong. Thankfully we got rid of the poison before anyone died. Still though it was idiotic of us to use technology, even WITH the data for said tech, without fully testing it. Off the rater grim topic at hand, when the GN drive is activated it cover’s the mobile suit attached to said drive in a almost redish pink aura, as well as leaving behind, if only for a brief moment, a after-image of the suit. Our test pilot used this to there advantage by circling around there foe, then firing his guns when least expected. This “Trans-am” mode as CBE calls it does not last forever though. Once the particles are used up Trans-am ends, and the GN drive, along with the condensers begin to gather and condense the particles once more. Today has been most interesting. We gone to our particular Gundam project nearly being shut down, to now rivaling and surpassing project Hellfire, the once favored project above us. If this luck stays with us we might be able to have more then just Starlight Waltz field tested, Eclipse Orchestra, Midnight Sonata, all of our Gundam project might be able to be built and tested in the field. This has gotten very. Very. Interesting.

Week 6: The Korean War
I’ve never been a history buff, but this week we had the once-in-a-lifetime honour of meeting Brigadier (Retd) B.A.H.  Parritt CBE, a British Korean War veteran who fought as part of the Allied troops. His story of devastation, terror and heroism will stay with me for a very, very long time.
(As his talk deserves a whole separate post, here’s my homework for this week for now...)
A (very) brief timeline of Modern Korean History (1900 - now)
Tumblr media
[1910 - 1945] Imperial Japanese rule: The Empire of Japan defeats the Chinese Qing Empire and Russian Empire over ambitions for Mancuria and Korea. However, the end of World War II effectively ends with bomb dropped by the United States on Hiroshima and Japan announces its surrender to the Allies. Orders from Washington sees the divide the Korean Peninsula into Soviet and U.S. occupation zones via the 38th parallel.
Tumblr media
[1945 - 1948] Division of Korea: In 1948, Syngman Rhee is elected as South Korean president and the Republic of Korea (South Korea) is established. A month later, Democratic People's Republic of Korea established in the North. Despite its name, the government, established by the Soviet Union, is a communist one lead by Premier Kim Il-sung.
Tumblr media
[1950 - 1953] Korean War:
Believing he could capture South Korea in 27 days, Kim Il-sung seeks Stalin's support for an invasion with China available for reinforcement.
The Korean People's Army (KPA) crosses the 38th parallel to invade the South and reach the outskirts of Seoul by June 1950.
The UN Security Council approves the use of force to help South Korea, prompting President Truman of the United States to send nearby U.S. Naval and Air forces.
However, having underestimated the North, the KPA swiftly advance South, forcing UN forces to retreat within the ‘Pusan Perimeter,’ a 140-mile (230 km) defensive line.
After amassing troops and supplies at the port of Pusan, the UN forces launches a counterattack at Incheon and by 25 September 1950 Seoul is recaptured by South Korea.
Several phases of offensive attacks from the North continue over several months as Chinese involvement intensifies via the People's Volunteer Army (PVA) and the continued support of Stalin.
Suffering large-scale losses on both sides, stalemate is reached and armistice negotiations begin on 10 July 1951 and last on-and-off for two years.
A final peace treaty agreement is signed on 27 July 1953 at Panmunjom with the 38th Parallel reset as the boundary between North and South Korea, also known as the demilitarized zone (DMZ).
Tumblr media
[1954 - now] Modernisation of North and South Korea:
After a military coup in the 1960s and several changes in leadership throughout the 1970s, fast-paced changes, both political and economical, happen in the South.
Starting with the constitution changing to allow direct election of the president in 1981, the 1980s saw South Korea’s swift technological advancement through investing in electronics and the computer industry.
In North Korea, post-war efforts were largely supported by the Chinese and governments. However economic expansion and increasing living standards came to an end in the 1970s when due to mounting debt as N. Korea decided to decrease its dependence on its neighbours’ aid
North Korea remains largely secluded from the rest of the world, both in terms of its foreign policy and trade relations. As a communist government with a hereditary succession of leadership, Kim Il-sung remained the supreme leader until his death in 1994, after which his son, Kim Jong-il took power. Kim Jong-il's son, Kim Jong-un, is the current leader, after his father's death in 2011.
2018: Looking to the future...(of reunification?)
From the impeachment of former S. Korean President Park Geun-Hye in October 2016 due to charges of corruption to the landslide victory during elections of current President Moon Jae-in, the past two years has seen a huge thaw in the relations between the two Koreas.
2018 has especially been a momentous one in the history of North and South Korea. As a sign of things to come, after months of diplomatic negotiations, it was agreed that at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, North and South would march together in the opening ceremony and put forward a united women's ice hockey team.
Tumblr media
Then, the unthinkable happened: on 27 April 2018, after decades of antagonistic relations, Kim Jong-un became the first ever North Korean leader to enter the South to meet President Moon for a peace talks summit in the South Korean zone of the Joint Security Area. The world held its breath as the two shook hands across the demarcation line, followed quickly with a subsequent sigh of relief as both leaders greeted one another with smiles, not to mention an unexpectedly heart-warming moment when Moon was seen to be helping Kim over the threshold.
Tumblr media
The summit was declared a successful one, with both countries pledging to agree to end hostile actions and work towards complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula. Symbolic changes continued after the summit, starting with North Korea adjusting its time zone to match the South's on 10 May 2018. At the same time, S. Korea also began removing propaganda loudspeakers from the border area.
Following the summit in Singapore between U.S. President Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un in June of this year, things continue to look positive for the possibility of reunification with both sides taking active steps in improving relations. So far, we’ve seen the reunification of families separated for decades since the Korean War in August, as well as North and South Korea competing as ‘Korea’ for several events over the summer at the 2018 Asian Games. Most recently, President Moon also became the first ever S. Korean leader to address the N. Korean public at the Arirang Festival on 19 September.
With so many historic firsts happening just within the past few months, I can only imagine they will continue well into the future. I wholehearted wish both North and South Korea the best in their continued effort towards a peaceful Korean peninsula for years to come.

Consumer Guide / No.107 / Gosh! It’s Amelia Fletcher (of The Catenary Wires and Swansea Sound) with Mark Watkins.
MW : What’s your favourite year for pop music?
AF : That is a hard question. Most of the music I love best is from the 1980s and 1990s. But in terms of a single year, I reckon it has to be 1965, even though I was a foetus at the time. Just so many of the songs that I really love seem to come from that year.
To pick just a few: ‘You Don’t Know’ by Ellie Greenwich; ‘I’ll Never Find Another You’ by The Seekers; The Shangri Las’ ‘Leader Of The Pack’ album; ‘Tired Of Waiting For You’ by The Kinks, and ‘Message Understood’ by Sandie Shaw.
MW : How did your first and last (current) bands get to be formed?
AF : My very first band was at school. We were initially called …And So To Bed, after a local bed shop (nicking that idea from Everything But The Girl). We later changed our name to Splatter Babies. We were a bit gothy by that point. I can’t really recall quite how we formed, but we were all mates at school in Oxford already, and I guess we just started messing around with playing covers. We did write some of our own songs, and they might have even been quite good, but the only tape we have of the band is a live show from London, when I couldn’t hear myself onstage, and I am singing totally out of tune! We split up soon after that. The rest of the band went on to form a band without me called Shake Appeal, which later morphed in Swervedriver. I waited a bit and then formed Talulah Gosh.
Our most recent band is Swansea Sound. We formed in March 2020, just as lockdown started. We were feeling a bit bereft, with all gigs cancelled for our main band (The Catenary Wires) and felt like we just wanted to make lots of music. Rob decided to send a song he’d written to our old friend, Hue Wiliams. Hue and I had played together in his band, The Pooh Sticks, and Rob’s song (called ‘Angry Girl’) seemed more appropriate for him than for The Catenary Wires. Hue was basically sitting at home with nothing to do and responded immediately. He sang a rough take of his vocals directly onto his phone in a cupboard in his house. We thought it sounded fine.
We asked Catenary Wires drummer, Ian Button, to play some keyboard drums onto it (he wasn’t allowed to play proper drums in his flat). We then slapped a mix together, recorded one more song (Corporate Indie Band), and hey presto we put them out as a single! It has all been a bit of a whirlwind. Ian and Hue have never even met, or even been in the same country. (Ian lives quite near us in Kent, and Hue lives in Wales). The Swansea Sound website is :
www.swanseasound.bandcamp.com
MW :  Talulah Gosh. Describe the preparation/s for, and the recording involved (set list etc) for the Radio One sessions for JANICE LONG and JOHN PEEL. What was it like meeting both DJs?
AF : My memory is hopeless, so I don’t have any recollection about the preparations, or even much about the recording. I do remember that Janice Long contacted us very early on. I think we’d only been together a few months really. By contrast, I had to write to John Peel to beg to do a session for him. We were such big fans, and it was a dream of ours. I remember him phoning our shared house in person to invite us to do the session. Our flatmate Richard answered the phone, went a bit pale, and kind of mumbled, “erm, I think John Peel is on the phone”. Both sessions were at Maida Vale Studios. Of course, we felt like complete pop stars being there!
The thing they don’t tell you about those sessions, though, is that the DJs aren’t actually there. I’ve never met Janice Long, even now. I did get to meet John Peel a few times later on. He was always lovely and friendly, but I was always a bit of a gibbering idiot. They say you shouldn’t meet your heroes, and it’s true. But it’s not because they turn out to be a disappointment – it’s because you turn out to be a disappointment!
MW : What is your favourite seaside resort and why?
AF : This one is easy. Broadstairs. I love it. We first went there in 2003, when I was heavily pregnant with our first daughter, and we’ve been literally hundreds of times since then. Rob’s Mum and Dad even moved there for about 8 years, because they loved it so much too. I don’t quite know what is so brilliant about it, but with little kids, the safe sands of Viking beach and Morellis ice cream parlour were big hits. And the whole 1950s picture postcard vibe of the place. We once took a friend who hadn’t been there since he was a teenager in the 1970s and he was gobsmacked at how little it had changed.
MW : Which hill have you most enjoyed climbing?
AF : Ah, also easy. Cadair Idris in Snowdonia. Well, it is more of a mountain than a hill, but I guess it counts. It is quite a hike, but really fantastic. I pretty much never wear trousers, so I did the whole thing in a skirt and tights. On our way up, we bumped into one of the mountain wardens and I could just tell he thought I’d never make it because I looked so ill prepared. But hey, I was fine!
MW : What fired an interest (and career) in Economics?
AF : It was a bit of an accident really. I did science A-levels, and then panicked that I didn’t want to be a scientist. So I hunted for an arts degree that I could get into with all science A levels. The best I could find was Politics, Philosophy and Economics. I had no idea what Economics even was – I figured I’d drop it after a year and focus on Politics and Philosophy. But it just ended up being the subject I was best at.
I still wouldn’t have taken it further, but what I really wanted to do was play in a band, and I realised that I could get a grant (those were the days!) to do a doctorate in economics, which would in turn allow me to avoid getting a job and do lots of music with our band Heavenly. That worked well, but it had the result that I ended up very highly qualified in economics!
So it was all a bit of an accident really. But somewhere along the way, I guess I did really get into it!
MW :  Rank your Top 3 Chancellors of The Exchequers and give reasons for your choices...
AF : Haha. I’m actually not going to answer this question. As my excuse, I will point out that I am not the ‘right sort’ of economist to really know – Chancellors typically deal with macroeconomics, and I do micro-economics. But also, I think they are all a bit of a mixed bag. Gordon Brown did some brilliant things, for example, but his over-reliance on PFI and his over-lax regulation of financial markets were both seriously problematic.
MW: Well done for receiving a CBE and an OBE. What are your (general) thoughts about the Honours Lists and on those that decide to return or refuse the honour?
AF : I felt queasy about receiving both honours actually. I was touched that colleagues had gone to the effort of making the applications for me, and was also very aware of how useful such things are for me in my day job. I also have no problem with a National Honours system in general. What I hate is the “E” for the Empire part of the whole thing. It really sticks in the craw.
So I did think hard about the whole thing. I read a lot of interviews with black people who had accepted honours, and about the soul-searching they had done around the issue. I ended up feeling it would be almost patronising to the difficult decisions made by those people for me to decline.
I was then going to write some of this up on the day of announcement of my CBE last year, but then Marcus Rashford was the big news of the day, and it didn’t seem the right moment for a white person to be having a moan about the words used for honours. But I do really wish they would change them. And yes, I therefore totally understand people or return or refuse the honour. I only hope they also understand people accepting them.
MW : All being well, what are your personal and professional plans for 2021?
AF : Well, Rob and I have just started a record label called Skep Wax
http://www.skepwax.com/
which is keeping us busy. We will be putting out new singles and albums by Swansea Sound, and our main band The Catenary Wires. So that is pretty exciting.
Professionally, I am involved in trying to introduce a regulatory framework for the big tech platforms: Google, Facebook, etc. This is incredibly important, in my view. Indeed, I have been one of principle advocates for the policy. But it is far from straightforward and requires lots of careful thought, to make sure it delivers good results.
As you can see, I have a rather schizophrenic life, but I guess both sides to it are effectively about trying to make good things happen, of one sort or another.

Cocoa Butter Alternatives Market Overview, Demand, Global Industry Share, COVID-19 Analysis and Growth 2023

For instance, mango butter is being used as an emulsion in chocolate to improve the mouthfeel of the end product.
By source, it is segmented into kokum & mango kernel, illipe & palm kernel stearin, sal, shea, and others. Among them, the shea segment can lead the market till 2023 due to its utilization in confectionery, chocolate, healthcare, and cosmetics industries. The segment can exhibit 9.64% CAGR during the assessment period. On the other hand, kokum & mango kernel segment can prove to be beneficial to the market. This can be credited to the eco-friendly extraction process from kokum, a tree found in parts of India.

[...] For some, it's the icing on the cake, the pinnacle of their career, and a chance to be patriotic. But every year, some celebrities and public figures turn down their New Year and birthday honours from the Queen, choosing to avoid the pomp and ceremony of a royal mention. John Cleese:"He first said no to a CBE in 1996, calling them "silly", and three years later told Mr Ashdown that staying in England during the winter was "too much of a price to pay" to sit in the Lords. He told The Sunday Telegraph it had been offered "not because I was such a wonderful human being, and because I'd helped them [Lib Dems] a lot". Ken Loach: "It's all the things I think are despicable: patronage, deferring to the monarchy and the name of the British Empire, which is a monument of exploitation and conquest. "I turned down the OBE because it's not a club you want to join when you look at the villains who've got it." Howard Gayle:He was nominated for his work with Show Racism A Red Card, but turned it down because "my ancestors would be turning in their graves after how empire and colonialism had enslaved them". John Lennon:He wrote a letter which read: "Your Majesty, I am returning this in protest against Britain's involvement in the Nigeria-Biafra thing, against our support of America in Vietnam and against Cold Turkey slipping down the charts. "With Love, John Lennon of Bag."

Anna, have you see the latest attempt at the nans to 'show affection' between the Ice Couple at the CBE? JFC, and they accuse skeptics of using images to push a narrative, or reading too much into an image. I notice they aren't talking about/reblogging the gifs where Herself is pulled back by Wanda, or where she's looking less than impressed at that fashion thing. Keep trying nans. Fetch may happen if you keep those rose colored glasses on. 🙄
I have Nonny.  I saw it last night and I have to say I was amazed at the awkward spooning in public (so unnatural, much affectionate) as well as hand holding / Weirdo arm placement during what didn’t turn out to be a photo op.  I was shaking my head at the nose touching and the subsequent sharky “I did well, didn’t I?  Do I get a bonus for this?” smile, and giggling at the way Wanda basically made sure Weirdo wouldn’t be in the frame while awkwardly trying to warm her hands on Ben’s back.
I can’t decide if it looked more tortured than awkward to be honest...

The need to honor my papa as well as other farmers that provide seasonal organic food was the primary inspiration behind beginning CORKY'S NUTS.
Maturing on our walnut farm, I observed the care and passion my daddy took into expanding his walnuts.
It appeared only all-natural for me to develop a company which permits people to experience what fresh natural walnuts taste like just after harvest, instead of walnuts that rest on store shelves for unidentified amount of times.

Beginning taking individuals seriously when they offer you compliments. What is it that individuals inform you you're fantastic at? Start snooping around websites like ebay.com, Amazon.com and also Etsy. Think about impulse purchases or things people buy frequently. This could include items like scent, candle lights, uniqueness and also DVDs. NatoMounts, for example, offers phone owners for automobiles---- which concerning 80% of their target market buys from their phone (yet ideally not in the vehicle!).
