May Game - December 2024 Progress Report
Another month, another game dev update post on my game featuring my character, May!
Last time, I noted that the game was playable from start to finish, in terms of who to talk to and where to go. But there were no enemies or puzzles, and the game needed them.
Puzzles
I added our first puzzle object: torches that could be lit and extinguished. Each one could trigger a script to cause things to happen depending on which torches are lit. Needs better graphics, but the mechanic works. I'm not sure if I'll add other kinds of puzzle objects for this game. I want it to be small in scope, and I think these torches already have a lot of potential to keep things interesting.

Enemies
The game's first enemy was added, and is in a pretty polished state. It can force the player to respawn, or be itself respawned, if it is spawn-camping. It can move around, will stop and watch the player if they're nearby, and has an idle jumping animation. It's cuter now than its initial concept, which had more of a horror-alien vibe, which felt out of place in a cozy game.

Other Additions
May (the protagonist) got "dying" and respawning animations in which she sinks into/rises up from the ground. Her other animations also got some minor touch-ups (hair is more animated, arms are less stiff).
An overlay (or "vignette") was added which features blue and black sludge, and is shown when the player is dying/respawning to communicate that the protagonist cannot currently be controlled.
Map transitions were added. Previously, all map changes happened instantly. But now, there are two. One for smoothly scrolling to an adjacent area. And an iris effect for entering/leaving buildings.

Dialogue boxes can now contain more than 2 lines of text, and will scroll to reveal more text.
A slow-tile was added, which reduces player speed.
I removed all the "front door" objects inside buildings. Now, maps can instead indicate which sides are "doors", triggering an iris effect when May touches them. Basically overriding the adjacent-map behavior in overworld maps.
Lots of code consolidation and bug fixes. In particular, May now inherits from the same base class as almost all other objects, meaning a lot less code duplication.
Games I've Beaten this Month
Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii) - An excellent 2D platformer and a great successor to Donkey Kong Country. The game has many levels of challenge for all kinds of players. You can just complete the levels. OR also get the KONG letters. OR also get the puzzle pieces. OR Complete the time trials - bronze, silver or gold. And then finally mirror levels. Whatever your skill level, you'll find a sweet spot that's not too easy and not too difficult. It's great.
Lost in Shadow (WiiWare) - A very unique puzzle game that involves manipulating 3D space in order to alter the 2D shadows they cast, which you can actually traverse. Later on, you'll find levels that have you climbing large 3D objects where you must alter light sources to jump between four different shadow-objects it cases, plus navigating its 3D space as well. The platforming and swordplay felt like the original 2D Prince of Persia games. The atmosphere felt a lot like Ico. Fascinating puzzles, though I do wish the game had fewer mandatory levels and more optional ones, due to how large and numerous they are.
Secrets of Grindea - I played this one co-op with my brother. If you like Secret of Mana, and you love spell and ability customizations, and are prepared for some challenging bullet-hell boss fights, then you'll enjoy this too. Every single character in the game has a full character portrait, which is a nice touch and rare sight to see.
Next Steps
I have begun working on other enemy designs. This is going to be a small game. But still, I have some ideas for synergy with puzzle objects that should make things a bit more interesting. Once all the enemy and puzzle mechanics are thought out, I'll be in a better position to start designing actual rooms.
Closing
I joined the Bluesky social networking site at the end of November, and have been posting a lot of clips and such to Bluesky since this month started. I like the format. Game dev can often require a lot of work for even small features. Having a platform that's great at sharing small things has been very nice. It's also been great being able to connect with so many other devs and see what they're working on. Lots of neat and inspiring things here. Bluesky has been great! (And my Steam wishlist has gotten a lot longer in the past month!)
So, this is the last dev log for 2024, so it feels appropriate to put something to summarize the year, too.
Work on this game began on May 1, 2024. At the time, I had no experience with Godot. I'd never used a game engine, and I'd never released a game of my own. It's been a thrilling eight months. Not without some low points. But my enthusiasm for this project is still just as high as it was at the start, if not higher. I'm so happy to be making this game! And I want 2025 to be the year that I finish it. That's it. That's my #1 goal for the year.

2024 year in review
Another year and chronic illness again took a toll on my hobbies. I put out a few pixel art pieces, I cleaned up a manga scan, I updated the Donkey Kong Card Game archive... kind of the bare minimum. I did play a bunch of games and publish reviews of them, which is the main reason I started this blog. Of course I've got other things going on outside the blog, with managing a monthly game club, weekly streams, etc. One of my longer term goals is to manage my condition better so that I have more energy for hobby stuff. Who knows if that will happen in 2025.
My gaming choices followed some noticeable trends. There was some heavy Vita usage in February when I contracted Covid, cleaning up the Analgesic games I hadn't gotten to, finishing the Panzer Dragoon series, Team Ico's games and Ico-likes, a deep dive into Avatar games (including a massive Flash game retrospective on stream)... and then, the massive Sonic blowout that dominated fully half the year, both on and off stream. What a rollercoaster that was. In fact, given the sheer volume, I feel I should do Sonic awards and non-Sonic awards.
"Most pleasant surprise [Sonic category]" has to be Sonic Forces, which gets roundly mocked but I absolutely fell in love with. All three Sonic Boom games land here as well, to a lesser extent, plus the delightful Sonic R. "Most unpleasant surprise [Sonic category]" is probably Sonic Adventure 2, which I had a miserable time with. Most people agree that Sonic 06 is godawful, Unleashed is rough, Lost World is weird, Colours has a terrible script, and Secret Rings controls like ass, but SA2 really highlighted to me that there is no golden age for Sonic, there are nuggets and turds in every era. Runners up are Riders and Chronicles. "Best Sonic story" is contentious, with Battle, Chronicles, and Frontiers putting forth strong showings, and Shadow Generations blowing most other games away (with the handicap of being fronted by Shadow), but the winner is the game that's all story, The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog. "Best Sonic music" is also stiff competition, with Sonic R, Secret Rings, and vocal tracks from across the Dreamcast/PS2 era getting play on my phone long after I'd finished the games, but Tomoya Ohtani rises above it all with Unleashed, Colours, and Lost World impressing me; Frontiers has great vocal and Cyberspace tracks but for me Forces hits the peak with Fist Bump and Infinite as well as better consistency across the OST.
"Best DLC/update" goes to Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, since it's basically Elden Ring 2. Runners up are Vampire Survivors: Ode to Castlevania, and the added Star Fox campaign in Starlink. "Best postgame", an award I invented to celebrate Analgesic's extensive development archives contained within the game. Sephonie's added platforming challenges kept me hooked but Even the Ocean's huge beta worlds and commentary were revelatory about the creation process which wins it the award. "Best co-op game" must reward Divinity Original Sin 2, which my brother and I played consistently literally the whole year, but haven't finished yet... look for a review in 2025. Runners up are Towerfall Ascension and Lego Skywalker Saga (again, review TBA). "The underwhelming followup award" goes to Panzer Dragoon Saga for turning a series of thrilling and creative rail shooters into a mediocre RPG. Runners up are the merely OK Last Guardian, and Avatar: Quest for Balance for being shoddier than the mid-2000s licenced Avatar games.

I have a theory about the events that occur just before ICO begins. It’s not an earth shattering theory that changes everything, but it’s something I think works logically with the story.
The purpose of my theory is to explain in more detail why Yorda might be in the cage at the game’s start, and what the purpose of The Queen's Sword is.
For one, I think it's very unlikely Yorda has been in that cage since her birth/creation. Like, I know The Queen is evil and dismissive of Yorda's desires, but she doesn't talk to her like she's just a thing in a cage. She speaks to Yorda like she has a choice to come to her senses and understand her situation. “Why don't you understand? You cannot survive in the outside world.”
And this phrase further implies Yorda had some agency before this point. The Queen has potentially tried to explain or convince her of this before and failed. That is not something you are required to do with a captive, who has no means of disobeying in the first place. That alongside the fact that capture is usually a last resort after persuasion fails… it paints a picture of how Yorda's situation must've changed.
So if Yorda wasn't always in the cage, why is she there when Ico shows up? Going with the only thing we have to run on, it might be because Ico showed up. Yorda's disobedience, if it stems from anywhere, would most likely be regarding the sacrifices (The non-canon original ICO script aside, this just makes sense to object to, especially at the time of Ico's arrival.) Remember too, (if we are to take Ueda's offhand comment from an interview as fact) Yorda is 16 years old, not old enough to have witnessed and comprehended the passing of a generation. Unless the Queen is taking from more than one village, this is likely her first time being exposed to the sacrificial act itself, since it can only happen once per generation.
Ok, so she protests to sacrifices and gets locked up. How does this tie into The Queen's Sword?
Well we have to wonder in the first place, "Why is it necessary to have this thing?" I mean, yes, it serves as a key for the human priests to enter, but surely you don't have to hand them a weapon to do that, right? Especially not the one weapon that can dismiss your Shadows and kill you with little effort. Why can't The Queen escort them to the room of sacrifices herself? …Oh. She's too weak… Remember how Yorda opens the castle gate with her power, and it takes so much energy out of her, that her hair grays in an instant and she can barely run? That’s what the sword is made for and protects against. It's possible that The Queen has become so frail that even the simplest idol doors of her own castle could pose a challenge to her. We never see her open a door herself, she just teleports.
If not bring her closer to death, opening a door in front of the mortal priests might give her a coughing fit, make her stumble, and in general reveal physical weakness to her enemies, who only cooperate in performing the sacrifice out of ignorance to its true purpose, fear of her magic, and her seeming immortality. She can’t put a hole in that image.
So she doesn't even approach them, instead she leaves the sword. While it is a risk to hand it over to them, it is arguably more secure than giving them a single hint as to the purpose of the sacrifices. To even use the sword herself would imply a weakness, because if she cannot open the doors of her own home without a magic tool, how strong can her magic really be? Ultimately it's better to be enigmatic and leave the tool to their own hands, so they feel like they are weak without her boon to them.
All the same, leaving them the sword like a key under the doormat is a risk. And one she had to take for however many generations after she stopped being able to open the doors herself. Had she another option, she would surely prefer to use it instead. That's where Yorda comes back in.
What if Yorda was, on this last sacrifice, meant to escort the guards in herself? She wouldn't just be roaming in the castle at the same time as the sacrifice's entombment, she would have been an active participant in the process. All the more reason for her to object and actively disobey an order. And thus leads cleanly into her punishment. The Queen requests her daughter help escort the sacrifice, so that they might recover her sword from it's pedestal at the docks and secure the cursed child without any risk. And Yorda can't accept, even knowing the plan would secure her mother's safety. This leads to conflict, which leads to The Queen's anger, and thus the cage.
If true, it would mean Yorda played a part in The Queen's defeat before the story even starts, because without such a theoretical refusal, Ico would have never gotten his hands on The Queen's Sword and thus never have been able to defeat her.
That would actually make sense!
Castle In The Mist (Ico's novelization by author Miyuki Miyabe), although not exactly canon, was approved by the team and therefore we could look at the author's interpretation as a possibly valid one as well. In it, things go very similarly to what you said, with the Queen painting this image of being a very fierce, powerful ruler to every other kingdom, and Yorda having a more active role in royal affairs, though very reluctantly. She doesn't really know what her mother's obscure traditions are about, and she's very frightened once she discovers the true scope of it all (not saying any more to not spoil for those who haven't read it!)
Yorda also seems wary of the way she usually reacts, probably because she's experienced her outbursts before and knows there will be a punishment if she doesn't comply (when she says things like "I have angered her" and blames herself for what is happening, for example). Regardless of whether we get to see it in the game or not, there seem to be subtle signs of Yorda being accustomed to having bad consequences to her every action.
As for the sword, we can even take the other games as an example. In SOTC, the ancient sword is not just a sword, but also a compass that guides you around, a key to the last colossus and, indirectly, to Dormin's power as well. In TLG, the mirror is also a key and a way to control both the Tricos' power and to render the Armored Knights immobile. All in all, these magical weapons/artifacts seem to exist not just for their primary purpose, but also to lend a bigger power to someone who might need it, especially if they're doing something that would benefit the owner.
Every game also features a powerful entity whose powers are either weakened or dormant. The Queen needs a sacrifice to keep going, Dormin has been imprisoned and stripped of their abilities, and the Master of the Valley... well, just seems to be waiting for its minions to finish working on something that it needs. All of them rely on a third party to accomplish something that their power, if working properly, would easily do.
Yorda having a role in the Queen's own demise would also not suprise me, because if there's one thing that happens in the universe of the games is prophecies fulfilling themselves and the stars aligning just right to make everything happen, so your theory might very well be true!

Custom Desktop Tutorial🎀✨
I've finally finished my custom desktop, and installing all the software I need on my new laptop. So I thought I'd upload a tutorial on how I did it 🥰
I'm still not 100% happy with all the icon choices but I'll add swap ones out as I see them. Here's some tips on how I did it:
Making Windows 11 desktop shortcuts
Windows 11 makes it weirdly hard to make desktop shortcuts. Its easy with some apps, almost impossible with others. The easiest possible way which took me ages to find out is that if you go onto your windows start menu and click all apps, you can drag them onto the desktop to make a shortcut. It won't work from search, it has to be from the full list. Very annoying, but it works for pretty much every app.
Opening multiple links at once
I like having websites I frequently visit on my desktop, especially if its an online course I'm working on because it's like a reminder to do it. Sometimes there are websites that I always use together and to save time and space I've set up a way for them to open at the same time from one shortcut using python and windows batch files.
Heres how to do it:
Step 1) Make your script
Make sure you have python installed (you can find it in the windows app store)
Create a python script which opens the websites you want using the webbrowser module. This is the code you need
import webbrowser webbrowser.open_new_tab("your_url_here") webbrowser.open_new_tab("your_other_url")
Literally just copy and paste that into notepad, or an IDE (adding more lines if you need them) and save it with the extension .py to make it a python file.
Copy the path to your file location by right clicking your new file and choosing "copy as path"
2) Make a batch file
Open another tab in notepad and use the following script and copy the following template into it
Note - Please remove the slash between the @ and echo
@/echo off python "C:/your/file_path/here"
Save this file with the extention .bat which will run the code when its clicked and open all your urls. You are going to want to save this in your files somewhere , and then right click and choose create shortcut.
You are going to want to do this if you want to use a custom icon because windows doesn't let you directly change icons for batch files for security reasons.
How to make and use custom icons
Find your images
You can make your own but I saved mine from pinterest.
2) Remove the background
Use a background remover tool (I used remove.bg) to remove the background, if the image has lots of black or white it might remove this too but you can add it back in using a drawing app (I used procreate). Save it as a PNG.
3) Convert it to an ICO file
This is the type of file that can be used as icons in windows. The converter I used is convertio, but keep in mind there is a limit of 10 minutes a day for the free version.
4) Change the icons
Right click on the desktop shortcut, choose properties and then choose change icon. Find your .ICO file and click Ok.

Nach dem kürzlichen Windows Upgrade von 22H2 auf 24H2 waren meine Ernergiesparfunktionen verändert. Mit der Tastatur funktionierte meine spezielle Energiespar-Taste (Halbmond-Symbol) nicht mehr.
Geholfen hat cmd als Admin ausführen (im Eingabefeld) und die Eingabe von: powercfg -hibernate off
Diese Script Funktion war auch nötig, wenn man auf dem Desktop eine Verknüpfung für das Energie-Sparen (nicht Ruhezustand) verwenden möchte: rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Sleep

Für die Verknüpfung erstelle ich mit ICO FIX ein eigenes Windows Icon (*.ico).
