owner says he's a bengal?
That makes sense! It's definitely possible. The kitty looks like some kind of charcoal tabby.
Charcoal is a kind of tabby pattern modifier, and while some charcoal-like patterns have been found in randombreds, it's much more often found in a cat who has at least some Bengal ancestry.
It seems like it's likely due to the "domestic cat non-agouti allele (a) and an ALC agouti allele (APb)." (source, from UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory)
Messybeast also has two articles that discuss charcoal and charcoal-like patterns: Psuedomelanism & Charcoal-Like Pattern and Hybrid Hues.

FACTORS AND YOU
(A GUIDE TO THE EFFECTS ON HUMANS DUE TO THE BLOOM CONVERGENCE)
Tumblr media
this question was asked on my main blog, but I thought that this deserves to be on my art blog since it's about my characters (and I drew art for it!)
Consider this guide to my world building as my innovation/contribution to the furry fandom!
STRAP IN THIS IS A LOOOOOONG ASS POST:
The world of AatW is primarily inhabited by humans like us! Except, they look different...
They just look different due to the effects of the bloom convergence, an important historical event in the world of "Arniela and the World" which sets our world apart from our main character Arniela.
The bloom convergence event was a massive supernatural event that completely broke the rules of physics, geology, biology, mathematics, chemistry and all human reason. During the bloom convergence, the earth grew twice as large, every landmass shredded and shifted irrespective of tectonics plates and every living thing completely transformed overnight.
Tumblr media
[Img ID: Example of post-bloom biodiversity, examples being the domestic shorthair cat diverging into the common gryphon and a snitten as well as an avocado diverging into a lycado, a glowing bulbfruit and a false kiwi, with an extra arrow pointing to more possibilities not listed /End ID]
As mentioned with breaking the laws of physics, somehow the earth didn't implode or explode or whatever, and there were significantly less tsunamis and earthquakes than one might expect with the complete shredding and rearranging of the planet's crust. This event still resulted in devastating amounts of human loses and was a major set back to society as a whole, but it wasn't as apocalyptic as one might expect.
The event is referred to as "The bloom-convergence", bloom refers to the changes to living beings, convergence refers to the changes to the planet. This post will focus on the bloom aspect of the bloom convergence.
Every anthropomorphic character regardless of "species" is actually biologically human.
As you can see here with one of our characters, Linda, those who were alive before the bloom-convergence once looked like any other human alive today.
The "species" someone is is not a different species at all, but rather a set of "magical phenotypes" referred to as Factors.
Tumblr media
[Img ID: AatW character Linda standing next to herself before the bloom convergence, she is a zoomorphic barn owl character who looks like a typical "furry" character. Next to her, her younger self is clearly seen as a red-headed human. Besides the two is a tiny family tree with herself, one of her husbands (named Bo) and one of her daughters (named Core). The family tree notes that Linda has the appearance of a barn owl, Bo has the appearance of a highland cow, but core looks nothing like either of the two animal species, having mismatched horns and an extremely raptor like face, and notably strange red eyes. Above it says "Factor Mutations are common" /end ID]
Everyone who was alive during the bloom-convergence only has one factor that is heavily based on real-life animals we are around today. This is unlike the mutations that plants had gone through, which are significantly more fantastical at times (re: bulbfruit). Factors function much more similar to a kind of phenotypal set of "genes" however, these "genes" are not linked by someone's actual genetics despite being attached to them, hence the need for their own name, Factors.
Factors can be passed down by someone's parents. As seen in the image above, Core retains Bo's horns and a similar ear type to him. Also not depicted is the fact that Core and Linda share the barn owl traits of wings and talons for feet.
But something is off here!
Notice that Core has red eyes despite neither of her parents having them, and the fact that it's an unnatural eye color for humans. Notice her mismatched bent horn? More notably, why does she have sharp teeth???
Core has a factor mutation! These are quite common!
It is not unheard of for children to acquire factor traits unrelated to their parents, it doesn't always happen, it's more of a sometimes thing than a frequent thing, but it's common to see it happen. The most common type of factor mutation is gaining traits from other similar animal species to one of their parent's factors. In this case, Core has taken on ancient therapod attributes of a raptor!
Other common mutations are slight unnatural attributes, like her red eye color, despite not having attributes to a Factor that has red eyes.
With all this in mind, as people continue to have children traits from different Factors will continue to mingle and mix until these "species" are indistinguishable from each other. However, the bloom convergence only happened thirty years ago from the point of time of the story, so this hasn't happened yet!
Additional note: every single person who was alive for the bloom convergence gained traits from a unique species, so you can tell if someone is older than thirty just by looking at them in AatW.
Factors can effect sex characteristics!
Tumblr media
[Img ID: Drawing of a person with boobs with an arrow pointing to the same person but as a snail, underneath the human it says perisex, underneath them as a snail it says factorsex. Underneath the drawing it shows a person with boobs lose their boobs after getting a bird factor with the caption "people also lost their boobs". Above these images says "Factors effect sex characteristics". To the side there are people of different factors, nationalities and races with the caption "Factors are NOT determined by race, ethnicity or nationality" As an example of one drawing there is a panda who is guatemalan and a chinese american peregrine falcon. /end ID]
This is my favorite part: Factors can change a person's sex characteristics! Whether they like it or not, factors can, and frequently do! Change the sex characteristics of a person.
For example many terrestrial snail species are hermaphroditic, as many people are familiar with, humans are typically gonochoric. This means snails typically carry sexual traits which we consider both male and female, whereas human's sexual traits tend to be grouped with each other in a specific way leading to the idea of 'male' and 'female' sexes.
Hermaphrodite is a slur when used to describe humans. People who carry both male and female sexual traits are intersex, not "hermaphrodites". People who are not intersex are perisex. The term intersex includes wide variety of different bodies and sexual characteristics it is not just a person with both a vulva and a penis, which is a very rare form of intersex characteristics.
Obviously, I don't want to use a slur to refer to the way factors effect sexual characteristics, but I don't want to conflate this fantasy element of my world building with real life intersex people, so I have opted to refer to sex characteristic differences based on factors as factorsex.
There are characters who are intersex in AatW, however this is a different thing from factorsex, as in real life many gonochoric species will have individuals with mixed sexual characteristics for their species. For one example, it's fairly common for female deer to have antlers and vice versa!
An example of factorsex could look like having snail's mixed genitalia as mentioned earlier, but it could also look like someone with a moth factor losing their genitalia altogether after metamorphosing. factorsex expressions are as diverse as intersex ones.
Noted but not generally considered a factorsex condition: A lot of non-mammalian people lost their breasts after getting non-mammalian factors.
Factors are NOT determined by race, ethnicity or nationality.
Factors have nothing to do with where someone used to be from, or where their parents came from, or even where they lived before the bloom-convergence, the assignment of factors was completely random.
This is a very important aspect of world building to me because it needs to be obvious that the 'species' differences in AatW are non-allegorical.
Racism, xenophobia, etc. all exist in AatW as is. I do not fuck with race realism. You can think of factors more as a strange "third gender" of sorts, its own unique social reality for the characters of AatW.
Discrimination against certain factors does happen, but it isn't structural discrimination. Older generations who are not used to the whole everyone being animals thing might find someone with a spider factor or snake factor to look untrustworthy or "creepy" due to the visual similarities to real spiders and snakes, but you will never see something like "all snakes are untrustworthy scammers" be a popular opinion. Factor differences simply haven't existed long enough to have those stereotypes to have a cultural foothold yet.

Welcome!
Here, we identify cat phenotypes (the genes showing visibly) based on the work of many cat geneticists! If you want to dive into the wide world of cat genetics, I suggest this series by little hungry warrior for a basic overview.
Ask box is always open (unless it’s a stressful week, like finals) and please ping me in posts so I can identify! I will also identify drawn kitties, if the artist themself requests!
On another note, please do not send me cats that have already been identified by whatcoloristhatcat! It's rude to them! If it's a larger post and you overlooked it, I understand a little, but won't do the ID.

okay so I'm not sure if we actually know for sure, but I'll do a breakdown of possibilities!!
blue eyes makes me think maybe some kind of dominant blue eye (DBE) gene at work.
his body appears to be a black tortoiseshell. solid black & orange (orange = visually tabby, but not actually genetically tabby, bc the black is solid), with the black brindled into the orange enough that it looks kinda like black stripes but is actually not.
so we've got a few possibilities:
he's a chimera
he's got XXY chromosomes (Klinefelter's) and just has really weird color distribution, maybe due to the DBE gene interacting with it somehow, or just from random chance
he's secretly actually an XX female... and just has really weird color distribution.
some weird combination of the above
My bet is on option 2, if he's indeed male like he was said to be!
I think he has XXY chromosomes, and is a DBE black tortoiseshell with low white spotting, who just happens to have weird color distribution- either due to the DBE gene interacting with how the colors present, or just random chance. X-inactivation my beloved.
We can see more examples of similar phenotypes in other non-chimera cats, such as these DBE black torties in the CƩleste and British Shorthair breeds:

celestes from here
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
british shorthairs from here
@/felinefractious covered this as well, which helped me come to my conclusion! This and this are their two posts covering it, I suggest checking them out!

welcome to my cannon gimmick blog!
Please read under the cut before asking me to ID something, also for more information about me and my tag system :)
I identify cannons in posts I find on here based off of my own research and experience working with cannons, inspired by other identifying things gimmick blogs like @identifying-cars-in-posts and @identifying-cat-phenotypes. Submissions through either tagging me in a post or sending an ask are welcome and appreciated!
Blog rules
No bigotry. Bigots, TERFs, etc. fuck off. If I catch any kind of discriminatory or hateful rhetoric, you're getting blocked.
I'm only able to ID black powder artillery from earlier than the late 1800s at the latest. I won't ID about any more modern artillery because I'm not knowledgeable enough whatsoever about that to be able to ID anything. I also may not be able to ID artillery from earlier than the 1700s. In addition, while I can ID field artillery, I'm more comfortable with garrison/naval artillery, so I may not be able to ID certain field guns. If you're unsure of the time period or type of explosive used, feel free to send it in, but if it's not from the time period I'm comfortable with and/or doesn't use black powder, I will not try to identify it.
I'm not an expert. I'm a university student studying history and biology, and have worked with cannons before, but am not a historian with specific academic expertise on this topic. While I can make educated guesses, it's very possible I will be wrong in my identifications sometimes.
ID requests can be made through my ask box or by tagging me in a post. While I doubt this blog will get popular enough to result in an unmanageable amount of submissions, if this does happen, I may close submissions and/or only respond to some of them while I work through a backlog.
Other things to consider: if the image of the cannon is unclear, if it's in really bad condition, etc., I may not be able to fully ID it. Also, depending on what I can see in a photo, I might not be able to differentiate between different calibers, especially if I can't clearly see any markings with information about the weight, maker, or caliber. In those cases, I'll either try to make a guess based off of the size of other things in the photo that I can guess the size of, and comparing those to the gun, guess a range (ex. either 18- or 24-pounder long gun) or just say that I can't identify the caliber if either of those fail.
I may occasionally answer questions about artillery that don't involve identification, but that will not be my main focus. I can occasionally answer questions and/or point to resources I've found helpful in some of my research, but if you do ask a question that's not asking me to do an ID, make sure it's not been asked before, and understand that I may not answer.
tags
I may update my tagging system at some point, but as of right now this is how I'll tag things.
IDs will be tagged with #cannon id, as well as the type of artillery, caliber if possible, and, if visible/applicable, the type of carriage it's on.
Asks, whether or not they're an ID, will be tagged #asks as well as any other applicable tags.
Anything that's not an ID will be tagged #not an id, discussions on artillery that don't involve IDs will be tagged #cannon discussion. Any questions about artillery that I try to answer will be tagged #cannon questions.
about me
I'm a university student from canada and I'm currently doing an undergrad degree in history and biology, I'm autistic and currently very into 1800s black powder artillery, firearms and british military drill from that period (which. I don't think the autism comes as a surprise there lol). I won't defend the british or canadian militaries though, given the long history of colonialism and imperialism there. He/they, occasionally she. I won't provide more details on how I've worked with cannons before to avoid doxing myself, so just a heads up that I won't answer questions on that. Currently a young adult.

domestic longhair!
most cats don’t have breeds, not even a mix. without papers from a breeder, a cat is considered a domestic shorthair/longhair— a term for randombred cats with no breed/unknown ancestry! (source, source)
Tumblr, I need help in identifying what kind of cat my cat is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think he may be at least part Maine Coon, but I got this boy from a rescue and before that he was a stray for 2 years. So he doesn't have anything official stating his breed (or coat name, I'd also like help in identifying that.)
This is him, he's got a sweet temperament and he's a giant (both figuratively and literally) baby. He's about 17 lbs last I checked, there's comparison photos of him beside my mother's regular sized cat as well for scale. He's very fluffy and soft, and is quite the talker as well.

the irony is that the hets were always allowed to discuss which genitals they want to come into contact with, that's every married het couple throughout history getting together to breed. and gay people have been allowed to be open about it for about 3 seconds and only amongst ourselves since the hets are still squeamish about gay sex even if they act like allies. all before you het heathens anti-scientifically decided you can invert your sex and sexuality and convinced yourselves of this bs in the past 5 years to prey on actual gay people as gay-fetishizing homophobes with 'corrective' r*pe ideation. even neuroscience shows that while gay men had slightly similar brain phenotypes to women whether these men id-d as trans or not, opposite-sex attracted trans-identified males had no such similarity to women and their brain patterns resembled any ol' het male's. proving that sexuality is solely based on sex and trans 'identity' isn't cerebrally or genetically innate the way homosexuality is. gay people wouldn’t have to speak so much about genitalia if you flabby het freaks with boobs down to your navel weren't flooding grindr pretending to be gay and male. I wouldn’t have to speak about only liking pussy because every normal person gay-friendly and homophobic alike used to know what lesbian means but now half the people on my 'lesbian' dating app are 6'4 het lesbian-fetishizing incels who fap to loli hentai in cat ears, child like skirts and dollar store wigs. they are the antithesis to lesbians and our desires and it's so funny how they don't even want each other despite pretending they're all women lol. they too want pussy as they're straight males after all. thanks to heteropatriarchy no-one chastizes them for it though, instead a bunch of bihet handmaidens who don't want to f*ck them either will pretend they're the most 'oppressed class of women' for social clout

hello! i have another curiosity from my shelter here that id love your thoughts on - a male cream and white cat with a blue speckle patch on his head. it's been like that for weeks and is definitely not dirt, plus i can see that the individual hairs are actually blue. he is cream everywhere else and upon several inspections seems definitely male, albeit he is either neutered or cryptorchid.
do you have any idea of things that could cause this?
fyi his name is goldfish. he is very sweet and has a very distinct meow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, i don't think it's possible to 100% determine it based on just visual phenotype, but people usually call this type of pattern somatic mutation, and that makes sense to me. It'd be like basically one melanocyte has an own mutation that "rescues" the orange variant.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is Paco and I love him dearly <3
His brother is super orange and super tabby but he's kinda beige and rlly only has stripes on his face and legs !!
Phenotype: red ticked tabby longhair
Some red cats are more "washed out" than others. The fact that he's a longhair probably contributes to hiding the tabby somewhat. I'm not 100% confident on the ticked tabby ID for this reason.
Breed: Likely random-bred
Interesting features: fluffy man!
I love fluffy men
