IIHF World Junior Championship 2022 Schedule Announced

Hockey Canada and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), have released the game schedules for the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship. The World Juniors 2022 Live hockey ticket sales for the event, which will take place at Rogers Place in Edmonton, from 9 to 20 Aug 2022, have also begun.

The tournament will begin with a clash between Czechia, Slovakia and Latvia at noon. Next up is Latvia vs Finland (at 16:00 local time) and the USA-Germany night game at 20:00.

The remaining ten teams in the 10-team event will begin on 10 August. The noon game will be played by Sweden and Switzerland, while Canada hosts Canada against Latvia at 16:00. Germany and Austria will then play in a neighboring match at 20:00.

Canada, Finland and Czechia will be playing in Group A. The United States, Sweden and Germany will be competing in Group B. If each group has four teams, the top four will advance to the quarter-finals.

Rogers Place will host all games. There will usually be two to three games per day during this preliminary round, which will conclude on 15 August. Canada will play the third quarter-final match at 17:00, if they are qualified.

On 19 August, the semi-finals will be played. If Canada qualifies, or the team with the highest preliminary-round record otherwise, the host will play in the early semi-final match at 14:00. At 18:00, the second semi-final match will take place. The 20th of August is the date for the medal games.

This will be the first time that all World Juniors games have been held in one location since 1988. Fans will also be present.

Single-game tickets are now available for purchase starting at $40. Packages will still be available.

The 2023 World Junior Championship will not have a relegation round. This means that the same 10 teams will compete in the 2023 World Junior Championship. It will be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Moncton (New Brunswick) from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5, 2023.

All games will be broadcast on NHL Networkin America andTSN Canada.

WOLF PACK MAKE POTULNY TEAM'S EIGHTH HEAD COACH

By: Alex Thomas, Hartford Wolf Pack HARTFORD, CT – New York Rangers President and General Manager Chris Drury announced today that the club has named Grant Potulny Head Coach of the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack. Potulny is the eighth head coach in Wolf Pack history. Potulny, 44, has spent the last seven seasons as the Head Coach of Northern Michigan University. During that time, he guided the Wildcats to a record of 128-113-17 over the course of 258 games. The Wildcats won 20 games in back-to-back seasons, posting a record of 20-16-1 during the 2021-22 campaign and a record of 21-17-0 during the 2022-23 season. The Wildcats concluded the 2022-23 season by advancing to the CCHA Finals for the second time in three seasons. Before joining the Wildcats, Potulny spent eight seasons as an Assistant Coach at the University of Minnesota. During his time with the Golden Gophers, Potulny helped the club capture six regular-season conference titles and qualify for the NCAA Tournament on five occasions. Internationally, Potulny was an Assistant Coach for Team USA at the IIHF World Junior Championships in 2013, 2017, 2018, and 2022. Team USA won the event in both 2013 and 2017. Before joining the coaching ranks, the native of Grand Forks, ND, enjoyed a six-year playing career in the AHL. He appeared in 297 games, scoring 145 points (73 g, 72 a) with the Binghamton Senators, Hershey Bears, Springfield Falcons, San Antonio Rampage, and Norfolk Admirals. Potulny was selected by the Ottawa Senators in the fifth round, 157th overall, of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. Before turning pro, Potulny played four seasons with the Golden Gophers, scoring 116 points (68 g, 48 a). In 2002, Potulny was named the NCAA Tournament’s MVP, leading the Golden Gophers to an NCAA National Championship. The Golden Gophers repeated as National Champions in 2003, with Potulny earning MVP honors in the WCHA Tournament. World Juniors opens future doors in Moncton

For the first time since Boxing Day, the Avenir Centre is quiet, but the excitement and impact of the 2023 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship is far from over in the city.

“This is exactly why we built the Avenir Centre,” said Moncton Mayor Dawn Arnold.

With both pre-tournament ice time and 12 tournament games in the books, Arnold says the World Juniors helped prove that Moncton can “welcome the world” to the city.

“We’d be touring that building and they’d say, ‘Someday we’ll be able to host an international event like the World Juniors and the media will be able to set up here and do a live broadcast… to see that come to fruition and to see the ease in which we can get this amazing coverage to 150 million viewers worldwide, you can’t buy that kind of coverage,” she said, reflecting back on when the Avenir Centre was still being built.

Generally speaking, cities have two years to organize the World Juniors tournament, but Moncton and Halifax were put on a much tighter deadline, pulling it together in a matter of weeks.

Jillian Somers, the Chief Executive Officer of Destination Moncton-Dieppe says that the international invitation couldn’t have come at a better time for local businesses.

“The time of year is typically a little bit slower over the holidays, so being able to host an event of this size and scope, I mean, it’s kind of a once in a generation thing anyways, but to be able to do it at this time and following such a difficult time over COVID-19 was just double the bonus,” said Somers.

It wasn’t just hockey that people got to experience, Somers says one of Destination Moncton-Dieppe’s main goal was to promote other tourist attractions and events all across the region.

“We wanted to take advantage of the fact that we’re going to have literally millions of eyes on our destination for this point of time, whether they were enjoying the games here in Moncton or watching us live on TV or online,” she said. “Our goal was really to keep people moving around the region, to experience a lot... hopefully it wet their appetite and they'll be back again."

Officials say the economic impact report should be out in the next few months, providing concrete numbers on just how big of an impact the World Juniors had in Moncton. But even without the final data, the success is being seen, especially at local hotels and restaurants.

"I walked Main Street pretty well every day, went into a lot of the bars and restaurants and they were all telling me how over the moon they were with the number of visitors they had,” said Bill Whalen, the co-chair for Team Moncton. “I think Moncton and Halifax have done both communities very proud with the way we’ve hosted this.”

Somers says, “On behalf of the hotel association, I know they were thrilled. Typically it would be a very quiet time, lower season from an occupancy perspective, and that wasn’t the case, obviously because we had a lot of guests.”

As for what’s to come, officials say it’s time to build on this momentum and see what other events Moncton can host in the future.

“Nothing concrete yet,” said Arnold. “But, certainly when you think of figure skating, you think of women’s hockey, you think of any number of events that we can certainly welcome to our community now.”

“I think the sky’s the limit.”

The 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship is scheduled to begin Dec. 26 with four games split between Moncton, New Brunswick and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The tournament will run until Jan. 5, 2023.

The United States begins play against Latvia on Dec. 26, while Canada, which won the 2022 WJC, will face Czechia. Canada defeated Finland 3-2 in overtime in the championship game at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Aug. 20. No team has won consecutive tournaments since Canada won five straight from 2005-09.

Ten teams will play in the WJC. The U.S. will be in Group B for the preliminary round at Avenir Centre in Moncton, along with Finland, Switzerland, Slovakia and Latvia. Group A consists of Canada, Sweden, Czechia, Germany and Austria at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax.

Russia remains banned from international play because of its invasion of Ukraine.

The top four teams in each group advance to the quarterfinals, which will be held Jan. 2. The semifinals are Jan. 4 in Halifax, and the championship and third-place games will be Jan. 5 in Halifax. A best-of-3 relegation round will also be held during the WJC playoff rounds.

IIHF 2023 STREAMING CHANNELS

In 2020, the IIHF Ice Hockey Championship was supposed to be hosted from 8 to 24 May 2020 by Switzerland, but the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last year, a lot of fans around the world were excited to see the return of the historic championship. The tournament is quite popular and has reached a global state ever since its inception in 1930 as an individual championship.

In fact, the 2019 tournament that was hosted in Slovakia reached a cumulative audience of over 1.6 billion, which shows how big the championship is across the globe.

This popularity is all thanks to the dozens of official broadcasters the sport has. However, each and every single channel is restricted to its own region.

Streaming services/websites apply geo-blocking to protect their content. That’s mainly for copyright reasons.

When the U.S. National Junior Team’s preliminary roster was announced, 10 of the 32 players selected are defenseman, while four were goaltenders. USA Hockey’s decision makers will have to cut one goaltender and three defensemen from their invite list to get down to the numbers required for the tournament. The expectation is USA will have 13 forwards, seven defensemen and three goaltenders on its roster.

The decisions for the U.S. will be challenging as there are a lot of similarities among the group. Only three of the 10 defensemen right shots and three that are 6-feet or taller. This might be the smallest defense corps the U.S. has brought to a World Junior Championship. Size certainly isn’t everything, but it is a notable factor in this team’s roster construction and could come into play against bigger teams like Canada in the latter stages of the tournament.

Beyond the size, however, a lot of these defensemen play very similarly. This is a very skilled, puck-moving group with a lot of guys that want to have the puck a lot. There might be a few redundancies on the roster, but this is the group that the player pool dictated. There aren’t a lot of strong arguments you can make for anyone else beyond that they might be bigger. The U.S. didn’t leave skill on the table here, which is a good thing.

The goaltending position is one that might have kept the decisionmakers up at night. They have guys that can do the job, but it’s not going to be considered a team strength. Kaidan Mbereko looks poised to be the starter again, while Trey Augustine looks like a good bet to get some games and be the No. 2. After that, Tyler Muszelik and Andrew Oke will have to battle it out for the No. 3 spot.

Fan excitement mounts at 2023 World Junior Hockey Championship

Connor Bedard’s overtime winning goal against Slovakia in the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship quarterfinal game set off a wild celebration inside Scotiabank Centre.

Outside of the arena, downtown Halifax was a sea of red and white.

“It was a fantastic game and suspenseful,” said one fan. “Nerve-wracking and sitting on the edge of my seat. I could’ve cried, it was so beautiful.”

When hockey fan Darren MacQueen stopped celebrating last night, he left the arena to drive his father home.

“And then my phone started blowing up and people were sending me messages saying, ‘you’re on TSN,’” said MacQueen.

MacQueen was standing next to Bedard‘s father when the winning goal was scored.

“I just ran up to shake his hand and congratulate him,” said MacQueen. “I was happy for him and it turned into me dancing with Bedard’s dad.”

The entire moment was captured live on TV.

“It was special,” said MacQueen.

Chris Larsen was the event organizer for the World Junior Hockey Championship in 2003. According to Larsen, the in-game experience at this year’s tournament has reached an unprecedented level of excitement.

“The fan experience centre in the building has been first rate,” said Larsen. “I would say our fans in Halifax and in Moncton would rival any arena.”

Looking ahead to Wednesday’s semi-final, MacQueen insists he’s not nervous.

“Not at all,” said MacQueen, who has a feeling this group of junior hockey players is a team of destiny, two wins away from a gold medal.

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Jason Spezza announced today his retirement from the National Hockey League after 19 seasons. With his announcement, Spezza will be joining the Maple Leafs' front office as Special Assistant to General Manager Kyle Dubas effective immediately.

"It is difficult to describe just how much of a lasting and positive impact that Jason Spezza made in his three seasons with the Maple Leafs," said General Manager Kyle Dubas. "Jason's passion for the game of hockey, his desire to continuously push himself and his teammates to improve, as well as his capacity to make strong connections with all members of the organization, have been invaluable. Though today marks the end of his tenure with us as a player, it is a pleasure to have him join our front office to impart all that he has to offer."

Spezza, 38, recorded 995 points (363G, 632A) through 1,248 career regular season NHL games split between the Maple Leafs, Dallas Stars and Ottawa Senators while collecting 76 points (28G, 48A) in 97 career Stanley Cup Playoff games. The two-time NHL All-Star (2008, 2012) ranks in the top 100 on the NHL's all-time list for games played (t-96th), assists (80th) and points (94th). In addition to serving as the eighth captain in Senators franchise history, Spezza sits sixth in all-time club games played (686), and second in goals (251), assists (436) and points (687) through his 11 seasons in Ottawa.

Internationally, Spezza has represented Canada at the IIHF World Championship four times (2008, 2009, 2011, 2015), the IIHF World Junior Championship three times (2000, 2001, 2002) and the Spengler Cup in 2012. Spezza won a gold (2015) and two silver medals (2008, 2009) at the IIHF World Championship and captured a silver (2002) and two bronze medals (2000, 2001) at the IIHF World Junior Championship. He also won the 2012 Spengler Cup with Team Canada.

Spezza was originally selected by Ottawa in the first round (2nd overall) of the 2001 NHL Draft.

Today I’m sharing Lindsay Gibbs’ piece on the jarring difference in junior men and women’s championship coverage. 

On December 26, 2019, two IIHF world junior championship tournaments kicked off — the men’s version, the IIHF World U20 Championship, was played in the Czech Republic, while the IIHF World Women’s U18 World Championship, took place in Slovakia. But while the events were similar in name and significance, when it came to broadcast investment, the two events could not have been more different.

Every single game of the men’s tournament was given the bells-and-whistles broadcast treatment from TSN, a Canadian sports network that showed all the games live with the full backing of a top-end broadcast crew. Meanwhile, during the first few days of the women’s tournament, the games were streamed on a security camera whose footage was so bad, it might not even be admissible in court.

The saddest part of all of this? None of it is really surprising. The trolls like to come out in full force any time we complain about the lack of coverage or support for women’s sports, and claim, “No one cares.” That’s wrong, of course. But it’s also worth noting that caring is not a prerequisite for investment in men’s sports. The investment comes first.

And there was a silver lining. Nearly 11,000 people tuned in to the shoddy stream to watch the final. There is an audience for women’s hockey, and they are dedicated. But both the audience — and, more importantly, the athletes themselves — deserve far better.
