The Zeleskyy Story (BBC) Review
8/10 (I'm being generous because actually good documentaries are hard to find and were rare the last years.)
Alright, I watched all three parts. If you still plan to watch and whatever your expectations are - lower them. A lot.
The title "The Zelenskyy Story" is, IMO, very misleading. Because the documentary is barely about his story and life. It's basically a documentary about Russia's war in Ukraine and how did that happen and what's Ze's role in it. You get some informations and insights in his life pre-war and pre-presidency and person but not more than you would read in a general information piece about him or what we got from some interviews (and tbh - some informations got more personal stuff, from Ze and Olena). There are also no new informations. No matter if you follow him a bit or if you are deep in the rabbit hole - about Ze or Olena or their life and marriage there is zero new informations. There is some interesting background stuff about the war and the history and Ukraine but if you follow the whole topic closely you will most likely also already know all this.
Also ironically, they let the people who know him the best (Sasha, Lenny) barely talk. Sasha a bit more than Lenny. Other people who know Ze from his previous life get some screentime, but in comparsion to other people also barely. I get that they wanted to include as many people to as many topics as possible. But yeah. Result is that opportunities for great interviews were missed.
The documentary does get credit for repeating no Russian propaganda and if they talk about it, they name it. It's also not overly pro-Ukraine. It's a neutral and fair portray. They also get points for facts and doing research and background checks. Maaaybe there are one or two things where we could talk about the way they said it, but overall they did a pretty good and decent job. But - it's all very rushed and sometimes, IMO, too short.
There is way too much Putin, considering this was suppossed to be about Ze. They definitely did a false balance here. Which is a shame for obvious reasons but also considering that there is SO MUCH to tell about Ze - about him as President, as war time President and about his pre-presidency life. So much that shaped him and turned him into the person he is today and that influenced him and that is so interesting. I just wish they would have used the three parts to show more of him, his life, his character and who is he and how did he became the Ze we all know today. And not connect him with Putin in literally every possible moment.
As for Volena moments - we get mostly (videos, as well as pictures and other things) stuff we already know. You probably have seen the majority of pictures, if not all of them, at some point somewhere. Same for video clips or something like that. We get one new cheek kiss (Ze going for a big smooch) and them being cute about each other and gushing and blushing and giggling (mostly Olena). But we also get (really) emotional moments.
So yeah. I think, in the end, I expected something else and most of all more. It is still a good documentary and worth a watch. Also something you can recommend to people if they want to learn more about Ze, Ukraine, the history and the war. There are some interesting stories from mostly war time from people of Ze's team or who happened to be a part of history. And some background informations that may not be that much general knowledge. Don't expect new or much (as you may expect because of the title) Volena or Kvartal fam.

Oh Jam, I canβt wait for you to come back and see *that* picture. I know you and everyone who reads your blog know exactly which one Iβm talking about π
The reason I'm so silent is because I saw that picture.
And I died.
I'm dead.
And if you're not dead yet after the pic, wait till I post the video. Because that's probably the most Volena moment in the history of Volena moments.
