Royal Navy's newest sailors at HMS Raleigh greeted by Princess Anne during Passing Out parade
Tumblr media
The Princess Royal takes salute at HMS Raleigh passing out parade.
Princess Anne made a special trip to HMS Raleigh yesterday, April 21, as the guest of honour at its Passing Out Parade to celebrate the newest sailors joining the fleet. The basic training facility of the Royal Navy at Torpoint was last visited by Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, in 2017.
HMS Raleigh is the home of both initial naval training for Royal Navy ratings and professional training. She arrived via royal helicopter and was greeted by the commanding officer of HMS Raleigh, captain Jane Roe ADC Royal Navy.
During the visit, Princess Anne met with the service, civilian and contractor staff who help deliver and support world-class training, as well as talking to a selection of recruits at various stages of their Royal Navy journey. The Cunningham 22/32 class are the latest recruits to complete their 10-week phase one training at the Torpoint base.
Among those to have met her was recruit Brodrick from Bristol, who is currently in week four of her training. She said: “I see The Princess Royal as a role model and an example on how I, as a female in the Royal Navy, can reach the highest ranks."
Chief petty officer Dav Hayer added: “I have met Her Majesty through her position as the chancellor of the University Highland and Islands where I am currently completing my MSc, and today [April 21] it is special to meet her in her role in the Royal Navy.”
Reflecting on her position of admiral of the Sea Cadets Corps, petty officer Stephen Owen from Liskeard, who works in the youth training team said: “It is appropriate The Princess Royal is here today [April 21]. 400 sea cadets are about to arrive to undertake the Annual National Drill and Piping competition at HMS RALEIGH, and she is an important head of our organisation.”

The Princess Royal inspects the passing out class at HMS Raleigh.
The class passing out was Cunningham 22/32, comprising of 25 sailors who are joining the fleet as future weapon and marine engineers, warfare specialists, Royal Navy Police, and a qualified dental nurse. The Princess Royal took the salute at the parade, which included Ship’s Company Divisions, and presented the training prizes and service awards.
Acting as guard officer, chief petty officer Al Lowe said: “It was a real privilege to be on parade in front of The Princess Royal, and it’s hugely rewarding to see these men and women evolve into effective members of the Royal Navy. All the training staff wish them luck as they start the next phase of specialist training.”

The Princess Royal meets HMS Raleigh recruit CS Sebastien Kava Liliu who is the first Solomon Islander to join the Royal Navy.
During her visit, six senior ratings serving at HMS Raleigh had their near 200 years’ service recognised with awards presented by Princess Anne. The sailors, all living in the south west and serving on the training staff at the New Entry Training establishment in Torpoint, Cornwall, have had their outstanding service marked with awards of Clasps to their long service and Good Conduct medal and Valedictory Certificates.
Petty officers Matthew Hocking and Stuart Donaldson both received the first Clasp to their medal after attaining over 25 years’ service, while warrant officers first class Ian Bailey and Justin Newbury both received their second Clasp after completing over 35 years’ service.

The crown princess is now the first Australian-born Denmark Queen consort, from the Commonwealth with Scottish roots 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
Australia’s Mary Donaldson went from commoner to Danish Queen 🇩🇰
An unconventional journey from Australia’s middle class to European royalty began in an unremarkable bar in Sydney in 2000. Twenty-three years later, in what has been called a “real-life fairytale”, Mary Donaldson, becomes the queen of Denmark 🇩🇰 Queen Mary, not only of Denmark, but of the Inuit in Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
Mary Donaldson was born in Tasmania an island state of Australia in a Hobart’s Hospital in 1972 to Scottish parents. John Dalgleish Donaldson, and Henrietta Donaldson (Henrietta Clark Horne). The daughter of a mathematics professor and an executive assistant who had emigrated to Australia from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
Tumblr media
Her father was born in the town of Cockenzie and Port Seton - (Scots: Cockennie [koˈkɪni]; Scottish Gaelic: Cùil Choinnich, meaning "cove of Kenneth") is a unified town in East Lothian, Scotland. It is on the coast of the Firth of Forth, four miles east of Musselburgh, and her mother was born in Edinburgh.
Tumblr media
Mary grew up in a middle-class suburban home alongside her siblings, Jane, Patricia and John. After her graduating with a degree in law and commerce from the University of Tasmania, She moved to Melbourne and Sydney, Mary had a high-flying career in advertising and then worked in luxury real estate. She worked during three months in Edinburgh as an account manager at an advertising agency.
But it was a chance encounter in a busy pub that would ultimately turn her life upside down. The Crown Prince sat alongside his cousin, Prince Nikolaos of Greece, his brother, Prince Prince Joachim, and Princess Martha of Norway at the “Slip Inn” in Sussex Street in Sidney as Australia celebrated Ian Thorpe's first Olympic gold.
Tumblr media
Princess Mary and her father John Dalgleish Donaldson at her wedding in Copenhagen Cathedral on 14th May 2004.
The wedding of Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark, and Mary Donaldson took place on 14 May 2004 in the Copenhagen Cathedral. Mary’s mother Henrietta ‘Etta’ Donaldson died from a heart condition two years before Mary married into royalty.
The Danish Folketing (parliament) passed a special law (Mary's Law) giving Donaldson Danish citizenship upon her marriage, a standard procedure for new foreign members of the royal family. She was previously a dual citizen of Australia and the United Kingdom. Ahead of the wedding, Mary had to give up her Australian citizenship and join Denmark's Lutheran Evangelical Church.
Tumblr media
The new Danish queen consort is of Scottish descent. Scotland's and Scandinavia's histories have long been intertwined with smatterings of Old Norse in the language, Viking and Norse settlement in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
Her father, John Dalgliesh Donaldson, stressed her Scottish roots in his speech at her wedding — and claimed his own clan had once helped eject the Norse from the Hebrides.
Check out the video below and listen her father's speech: “In the 12th century, after much savage fighting, the marauding Vikings were driven out of Scotland by a band of men led by the grandfather of the first Donald, the founder of the clan MacDonald. And for those of you who are not aware, I’m wearing tonight, the dress MacDonald tartan, which is the ancient MacDonald”.
“Donald’s great-grandfather would have wondered why he went to such trouble when, some eight centuries later, we take account of today’s union between the Viking Frederick and Mary of the MacDonald clan.”
Loving words from Mary's father.

Margrethe II reigned as Queen of Denmark from 1972 until her abdication in 2024. Having reigned for 52 years, she is the longest-serving female monarch in Danish history.
The Queen of Denmark made the announcement in her New Year's Eve speech. She formally hand over the throne in a Council of State today 14th January, 2024 at 2:00 p.m., when she signed the Declaration of Abdication. From that moment on, her son became King Frederick X.
Tumblr media
The Crown Princess Mary was crowned Queen consort alongside her husband, the new King Frederik of Denmark. It was a historic moment, for which she wore a historic outfit by the Danish designer Soeren Le Schmidt.

On December 30th 1969 two police officers died of bullet wounds during a raid on a house in Allison Street, Glasgow; a third was wounded.
Police in Glasgow still remember the murder of two officers, when one of their ex colleagues was spotted with a suspicious package after robbing a bank in Linwood. The horrifying case was led by an ex police officer, who was in jail until 2002.
Shortly after 4pm two officers were shot dead by a man seen acting suspiciously outside a flat in Govanhill on the south side of the city. Their suspect had just taken part in an armed robbery and was carrying the proceeds into the Allison Street tenement in suitcases.
When the two cops followed their man into the ground floor apartment, unaware of the earlier hold-up, he pulled out a gun and shot them dead. The double murder was all the more shocking because it was carried out by a former police officer and colleagu
A few hours later Howard Wilson, married with a young family, was sitting in his police cell in nearby Craigie Street Police Office confessing both murders to his bewildered lawyer Joe Beltrami.
Nineteen years later in his memoir Tales of the Suspected, Beltrami wrote: “As I listened to him. I kept asking myself what could have possessed him.
“He looked more like a businessman than a criminal.”
Wilson had quit the City of Glasgow police in 1968 after 10 years’ service when he failed to get promotion to sergeant.
Instead he opened a greengrocers, The Orchard in nearby Mount Florida. But the outlet, along with another shop he’d bought, was losing money.
His two best friends former prison officer Ian Donaldson, 31, and ex-cop John Sim, 21, both had young families and were also strapped for cash. During one late evening drinking session they joked about robbing a bank to solve all their financial worries. However, the morning after the night before it began to sound like a plan.
Who would suspect two former cops and a prison officer? They had no criminal records and their fingerprints were not on file. The money would also be used to pay off debts so it would disappear as quickly as it had been stolen.
Thus the pieces of a jigsaw were put in place that would result in a cold blooded double execution almost six months later.
The trio recruited a fourth man – Archibald McGeachie – to be their getaway driver, and bought a Russian pistol from the president of the Bearsden Shooting Club, of which all three were members. On July 16, dressed in smart suits and carrying briefcases they walked into the British Linen Bank in Giffnock, East Renfrewshire, and escaped with £20,876 (£270,000 now).
All three, however, were broke again by Christmas and, having got away with it once, planned another heist – this time a branch of the Clydesdale in Linwood, Renfrewshire on December 30.
However, McGeachie took cold feet and declined the job of getaway driver, leaving his three pals to do the job on their own.
On December 23, a week before, the second hold up, he disappeared from his home and was never been seen again.
His fellow robbers escaped this time with £14,000 – much of it in silver coins – which later proved significant when they were all spotted by a suspicious Inspector Andrew Hyslop transporting the suitcases. He recognised Wilson who he had once trained in the use of firearms.
Inspector Hyslop also suspected the trio were carrying stolen whisky, as he didn’t know about the bank robbery. He confronted all three in Wilson’s ground floor flat, having called in reinforcements from Craigie Street.
When the inspector bent down to open one of the cases, his former colleague shot him in the face. Detective Constable Angus MacKenzie and PC Edward Barnett, were then both shot in the head when they tried to arrest him.
As they fell, Wilson calmly stepped up to DC MacKenzie and shot him again, killing him outright.
His accomplice Donaldson had fled the flat, while Sim watched in horror. Wilson turned his attention to another former colleague PC John Sellars, who had taken refuge in the bathroom to radio for help but he couldn’t get through the door. Wilson then noticed Inspector Hyslop beginning to move on the floor, and went to finish him off.
A fifth officer, Detective Constable John Campbell flung himself across the hall at Wilson before he could fire again, saving his colleagues’ life.
DC Campbell managed to wrestle the gun from Wilson just as his fellow officers alerted by the sound of gunfire rushed into the flat.
There they found a scene of unimaginable horror. DC MacKenzie had been killed outright while PC Barnett would die five days later in hospital.
Wilson only seemed to regret only what he had done to DC MacKenzie, whose wife June he knew personally. As he was led away, he asked the arresting officers if they would apologise to her on his behalf.
When the three appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court on February 6, 1970, Wilson admitted the murders of Detective Constable McKenzie and Constable Barnett, attempting to murder Inspector Hyslop, threatening to shoot Constable Sellars, and to the bank robberies at Giffnock and Linwood. A week later, at the High Court in Edinburgh, Wilson was sentenced to life, with a recommendation that he should serve a minimum of 25 years. Donaldson and Sim were given 12 years each for their parts in the robberies.
Later that year it was announced that the Queen had approved awards of the George Medal to Inspector Hyslop and Detective Constable Campbell. Awards of the Queen’s Police Medal for Gallantry were posthumously awarded to Detective Constable McKenzie and Constable Barnett. In 1971, PC Sellars was awarded the Glasgow Corporation medal for bravery by the Lord Provost.
Detective Constable McKenzie left a widow, June, and Constable Barnett a widow, Margaret, and two children.
Of the three officers who survived, Inspector Hyslop suffered most as bullet parts had been left deeply embedded in his neck. After many months on sick leave Inspector Hyslop returned to duty. But the shock of his terrible experience had left him unfit to carry on and in June, 1971, he had to resign from the force and died on the island of Islay in 2000, aged 74.
In December 2009, on the 40th anniversary of the murders, Alastair organised a memorial service at Linn Crematorium in Castlemilk where the two officers are buried side by side, attended by their widows.
In September 2002, Wilson was finally freed after almost 33 years behind bars despite strenuous objections from the Scottish Police Federation.
At the time its chairman Norman Flowers, said: “We feel that anyone who murders a police officer should never be released. Life should mean life.”
More facts about this brutal crime can be found here http://www.policemuseum.org.uk/the-allison-street-police.../

Testimony from several officers at a coroners’ inquest into the death of Myles Gray during confrontation with Vancouver police is raising new questions about their union.
Gray, 33, died in the back yard of a home on the Vancouver-Burnaby border on Aug. 13, 2015.
Several officers have now told the inquest that they were told not to take notes about the incident at the direction of the Vancouver Police Union.
Present at the time, according to some of the officers, were union representatives Tom Stamatakis and Ralph Kaisers.
“It feels to me as if the union and its officers are putting the interests of the members ahead of everything else,” Lawyer Ian Donaldson, who represents the Gray Family, told Global News on Friday. [...]

March 2024
Club regulars Calum MacAskill on accordion, Carina Campbell on fiddle and Charlie Oag (drums) began proceedings with a great set of 2/4 marches comprising two compositions of the late Donald MacFarlane from Oban – 'John Peel' and 'Calum MacAskill's Welcome to Oban'. They followed this with a beautiful set of waltzes which was much appreciated by a slightly larger audience including visitors from the USA, Netherlands, Kiltarlity and Inverness.
It was then time for the Brendon family, with young Kiro coming to the stage with his fiddle to play 'The Bonnie Lass o' Fyvie'. He then picked up his whistle and performed the 'Skye Boat Song' followed by 'Tha mi Sigh' before Carina joined him on stage for the fiddle duet, 'In Dreams'.
Big sister and fiddler Leela Brendon then played 'Margaret's Waltz' followed by the 'Patchwork Polka'.
Making a most welcome return to the Club was 14 year old Tilly Ng, who last played there in 2018, and she gave the audience a polished performance of tunes on her fiddle. Tilly was then followed by her younger brother, Elliot, on accordion and, making his debut in the Club, who played 'The Dark Island'. Great to see Tilly back with us and hopefully we shall hear them again next month.
MC Julia then welcomed our guest band on to the stage – the Matthew MacLennan Trio – comprising Matthew on piano accordion with Julia Dignan on fiddle, both based in Edinburgh, and Skye born Ally K MacPherson, now resident in Inverness, on drums. They began their evening with a lively set of Pipe Marches which really had everybody's feet tapping. During the first half the band played the twostep 'Bouncing Bobby', a set of fine Irish waltzes and the Ian Holmes composition 'Queen of the South Polka' before rounding off with set of catchy reels.
Julia herself got the second half under way with 'Midnight on the Water' and the 'Ashokan Farewell' followed by 'Westering Home' and the 'Hills of Lorne'. It was then back to the stage for Leela and Carina who gave us a grand fiddle duet of 2/4 and 6/8 Marches followed by the twosteps, the 'Andy Ross Twostep' and Frank Jamieson'.
Another couple welcomed to the Club on a return visit were Sarah Jane Shanklin on fiddle and Hugh 'Shuggie' MacCallum on drums and they were joined on stage by Matthew on accordion.
They gave the audience a cracking selection of 2/4 and 6/8 marches – 'Captain Carswell', 'Maclean of Pennycross', 'Donald MacLean of Lewis' and 'Kenneth J MacLeod'. We hope they will be back to entertain us soon again.
An interesting addition to the programme was then introduced by MC Julia – a 'Stramash' – in which we heard five fiddlers, two accordionists and Hugh on drums give us a fine selection of waltzes – 'Skye Boat Song', 'Margaret's Waltz' and 'Morag of Dunvegan'. This was very much enjoyed and loudly applauded by the audience.
Time then for the guests, the Matthew MacLennan Trio, to take over for the remainder of the evening and they got the feet tapping once again with some 4/4 marches followed by a set of fiddle jigs. A varied mixture of music including Gaelic waltzes, a set of fiddle strathspeys, the 6/8 marches 'Games Day at Aboyne' and 'Braemar Highland Gathering' and the waltzes 'Ally's Waltz' and 'Maggies West's Waltz' made up the second half which the band finished with a fantastic set of Shetland reels.
Next month the Club Meet on Thursday, 4th April in the Royal Hotel, Portree, when it will be the music of the Colin Donaldson Trio, very much a family band from Inverness and the Committee look forward to a good turnout to support them and to encourage all our young local musicians.
