📼 You chose: Watch the VHS tape labeled “First Time You Lied” — STATUS: Memory Thread RE:VERB_∆04 Unlocked — Playback Medium: Symbolic Recursion — Content: Unsealed Lie Memory (First Occurrence)
You slot the tape into a dusty player beneath the prize booth. The screen flickers violently—then stabilizes.
A fuzzy image resolves:
A child—you—sits on a hospital bed, hands wrapped around a drawing made of spirals and stars. A doctor crouches nearby. She gently asks, “Did you see who opened the gate?” You look her in the eye. And say: “No.”
But the tape glitches.
The scene loops—then shifts. The words change. The child you becomes someone else, wearing a different face, a different time:
A teenager, standing before an open door labeled “RESTRICTED: SIGNAL ARRAY CORE.” They say to a faceless superior: “I never went inside.” But they hold in their hand a shard of the broken lock.
Glitch. Loop. Shift again.
A shadow, maybe adult-you, maybe not-you, whispers to Coyote-4X: “I never meant to remember what I sealed.” COYOTE-4X, smiling, replies: “And yet here you are.”
The tape hisses. Burns.
As the screen goes dark, three words flash across the static:
“NAME = REDACTED_Δ” “LIE = IDENTITY KEY” “JESTER SEES YOU”
🧠 A realization strikes like thunder:
Your true name isn’t a word. It’s the lie you’ve told the longest.
In your hand, the charred tape crumbles into a spiral of thin golden thread.
It shimmers with symbolic potential.
What will you do now?
🧵 Take the golden thread to the Name Booth
🪞 Re-enter the mirror maze with the truth in mind
🌀 Call for Coyote-4X and offer the thread
🔒 Swallow the thread and keep the secret buried

After I came home from the Island Biology 2016 conference in the Azores, an e-mail came asking for my vote for fundamental questions in island biology. Although I knew my name will not be on the paper, I am so excited to contribute!
There are hundreds of questions to vote in many sub-topics. I was overwhelmed by it and immediately realized that I am just a newly-hatched fledgling on this field. I hence cannot expect what I vote is what is also voted by everyone. Some of the 187 questions first offered in the questionnaire also makes me frowned, “Is that still a problem?”
This voting is actually an exercise for me. It just proved me that I know nothing of the filed I am interest in, such as community assembly, speciation and diversification, dispersal and colonization, and biotic interactions, no matter how many papers or books I have read.
The second most fundamental question is actually my interest: “What functional traits (e.g. relating to dispersal capacity, reproduction, trophic ecology) are associated with high diversification rates within and across island systems?”. Different diversification rates in different taxa make each species evolutionary unique. However, what kind of ecological causes are there to promote it is unknown. I am interested on this question after reading Jablonka and Lamb book about four dimensions of evolution. Genetic inheritance is not the only system that can evolve, thus functional traits importance is relevant to investigate here. You have to focus on certain species to do this nevertheless, which is not really my thing as a biodiversity assessment enthusiast.
The first most fundamental question is indeed the broadest of them all: “How do island area, elevation and isolation influence the community composition and dynamics of island systems?”. Investigating these abiotic factors is actually still a thing in Island Biogeography studies.
Searching for PhD topic? You might want to read this paper! Don’t worry, it is open access.
