Once a barber, always a barber..
Now living in the lap of luxury, much of Ramesh Babu's early life was a struggle for survival and remembering his roots he remains true to his craft, a barber at heart. It was during high school when Babu started snipping locks taking forward his father's legacy. He still takes pride in doing it and charges only a hundred rupees for his service.
It is this humbleness that has won millions of hearts and earned him the title of 'Millionaire Barber'. Challenging Openings
Born into a poor family, Babu's father was a barber who passed away in the year 1979 when Babu was just seven years old. Her mother started working as a maid servant to makes ends meet and his father's saloon business was taken over by his uncle who used to pay them five rupees a day. Even during those days, five rupees was too small an amount to see to Babu, his brother and sister's educational and physical needs.
To survive they took to having just one meal a day. To pick up extra cash Babu started taking up odd jobs from delivering milk bottles to newspapers and more to lessen the burden on his mother's shoulder. Thanks to the money coming in from these odd jobs that Babu could finish his tenth standard and join evening PUC.

Turning point in Babu's life
It was sometime during the nineties when his mother had a bitter fight with the uncle and he simply stopped paying them any money. Babu wanted to take over the saloon but his mother was adamant about him to continue his education. Babu started working at saloon learning the trade.

Avant-garde, here he begins...
He bought a second-hand Maruti Van in 1993. His uncle had bought a small car and it was because of that he too bought a car in vanity. It took all his savings and a little loan but the satisfaction of buying a grander vehicle than his uncle was what made him feel happier. His grandfather mortgaged his property for him to get the loan and the loan interest was six thousand and eight hundred rupees.
It was Nandini akka, the lady in whose house her mother used to work suggested to rent the car instead of just keeping it around. It was again she who taught him the basics of the business. She became like a sister for Babu and still is a big part of his life. She even called him and showed him off at her daughter' wedding.
Building bricks of the business...
It was from 1994 that Ramesh Babu got seriously into the car rental business. The first company he rented the car to was Intel and it was again Nandini akka who arranged that as she was working there. Babu kept adding more cars to the fleet and till 2004 he had about five to six cars. He was more focused on the saloon business and this was a side business. Also, this business was not doing very well as the competition was tough as everyone in the business had small cars. It was then he thought of getting into the luxury car segment where not many players had forayed.
Success mantra and message to other aspiring entrepreneurs...
Babu's success mantra is simple and easy to follow, "All you need to succeed is confidence, relentless hard work, dedication, and undeviating focus on your goal…and some luck", he commences.

Tata Tigor Long Term Review: March 2018
Considering that I was on leave and driving the Dzire for the better part of last month, I haven’t been able to clock too many kilometres on the odometer of the Tigor. That said, a good portion of the mileage this month was on the highway. A couple of runs to Pune and back were enough for me to realise that the Tigor’s engine doesn’t like to be pushed hard. The car gains some energy when you go past the 2,000rpm mark, but even then, the surge forward is just not strong or quick enough. It even starts to violently express its discomfort as you push it in three-digit speeds. Continue to accelerate further, and you may notice that it isn’t the most efficient car on the highway. Just like we experienced with the Tiago before this, the Tigor too is more of a city tool. There’s just enough punch to zip through traffic between lights, which by the way is further…

Tata Tigor Long Term Review: January 2018
A busy schedule has led all of my drives this month, which is north of 600 kilometres, to be predominantly in the city. With a small 1.05-litre diesel motor, the Tigor is best suited for urbanscapes, but it is far from being perfect even in this setting.
2017 Tata Tigor Review: First Drive
It’s a well-known fact that restoring a brand in the Indian market is no mean feat. And Tata Motors knows it very well. Undergoing a revamp, slowly, the brand has been gaining traction in the market, albeit there is much more that still needs to be done.

A quick spec check of the new Maruti Suzuki DZire against its arch-rivals.
The third-gen Maruti Suzuki DZire is all set to go on sale across the country. Bookings of the new compact sedan are already open and we’ve already got a detailed look at it during the official unveil a couple of weeks ago. Now, while it’s a given that the new model will straightaway go on to become a best-seller for Maruti Suzuki – let alone dominate its segment
Tata Tigor vs Hyundai Grand i10 vs Maruti Suzuki Baleno vs Honda Amaze: Spec Comparison
How does the newly launched Tata Tigor stack up against some of the other similarly priced cars in the market?
Tata first showcased the Kite 5, the concept form of the Tigor at the 2016 Auto Expo last year. The Sanand-based car maker then unveiled the Tigor in its production form at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in March this year and launched it in the Indian market on 29th of the same month. The Tigor has been priced from Rs 4.7 lakh to Rs 7.09 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The price that it comes at, the Tata Tigor will have to hold its own not just against compact sedans

Suzuki Swift wins 2018 RJC Car of The Year Award in Japan.
Ignis and Swift score high in fuel consumption drives with Fleet World magazine and parkers.co.uk.
Suzuki Motor Corporation’s Swift has recently won the 2018 RJC Car of the Year award, promoted by the Automotive Researchers’ and Journalists’ Conference of Japan (RJC). The latest Swift is the third-generation version since its launch in 2004 as a world strategic model, and is now the third consecutive winner of the coveted award having also won RJC Car of The Year in 2005 and 2010. Across the domestic range in Japan, this also marks the seventh Car of The Year title for Suzuki following the WagonR in 1993, the WagonR and WagonR Stingray in 2008, the Swift in 2005 and 2010, the Hustler in 2014, and the Alto in 2015. Commenting on the reason for presenting the award to Suzuki, RJC said, “The Swift offers a good variety of models to a wide range of users, especially the newly launched in Japan Swift Sport with six-speed manual transmission which has excellent driving performance, manoeuvrability, and sporty characteristics. The 27th RJC Car of the Year award was selected from a list of Japanese domestic models that were launched between 1 November 2016 and 31 October 2017. A vote on 1 November narrowed the field down to a shortlist of six and a final vote on 14 November determined the overall winner. Swift has sold 5.77 million units worldwide since its first launch in 2004*. They have been favoured in Japan, Europe, and many other global markets. *Based on Suzuki research as of the end of September 2017. Real World Fuel Economy drives. Long established magazine Fleet World recently entered a Swift in their annual MPG Marathon to monitor how the car would fare over a pre-determined route versus its officially quoted fuel consumption figure. The editorial team chose a 1.2-litre petrol SZ5 ALLGRIP 4x4 model with SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) which has an official combined figure of 62.8mpg. This is the heaviest Swift model in the range although it still weighs in at just 980kg. The driving team managed to make a 29 per cent improvement on the combined figure at 81.05mpg achieving 18.25 more miles on a single gallon. Driver Richard Morcom comments “I was impressed by our Suzuki, 81mpg is not bad for a four -wheel drive car and that’s in the hands of an ordinary driver with a time limited route which shows that manufacturers figures can be improved upon. We didn’t do anything clever to achieve that figure either, our performance was down to following the satellite navigation and being very gentle when accelerating and braking” Parkers.co.uk decided on a much longer economy drive with their long-term loan Ignis SZ-T by taking it on the arduous Land’s End to John O’ Groats route. Driver Stephen Lawman achieved an average of 80.42mpg over a total of 885.3 miles including some minor traffic re-routings on the way. The Ignis consumed just 50.63 litres or 11.12 gallons of fuel; the 80.42mpg achieved was versus an official combined figure of 61.3mpg representing an additional 19.1 miles driven per gallon. The total fuel cost for the journey was £60.88 and Stephen completed the marathon trip in 21 hours and 12 minutes. Over the eight-month loan period with Parkers, the Ignis clocked up almost 11,000 miles and recorded an average of 61.4mpg representing 100.1 per cent of the officially quoted figure.

He has been featured on several television channels and newspapers and has even given a TED talk where he humbly referred himself as the 'Millionaire Barber'. An urban legend, here's the inspiring real-life story of Ramesh Babu.

Mornings were spent in the saloon and evenings at college and since the saloon used to be open till 1 in the morning, Babu used to go again after the college. It was during this time that people started calling him a barber.

What is it? The Suzuki Swift is the third-generation version of the brand’s best-selling supermini. Key features: Lighter, more powerful and efficient, more technology. Our view: The new version of the Suzuki Swift takes the model a significant step forward – Suzuki’s confidence in increasing sales should not be misplaced. Type of review: First Drive.
The Suzuki Swift is a very important car to the Japanese brand. Since a model name dating back to the 1980s was revived in 2005 on the brand’s first ‘global car’, the supermini has sold 5.4 million across the world. One million of these have been in Europe and 127,000 in the UK – in both continent and country it is Suzuki’s best seller.
The current, second generation Swift peaked at 13,300 UK sales as recently as 2015 and was still selling more than 11,000 last year despite the imminent arrival of the new one, so there is no doubt that the third-generation model’s arrival in June is eagerly awaited by Suzuki fans.
Exterior and interior
The latest Swift grabs the attention on first sight, and not just because a newly introduced exterior colour, ‘Burning Red’ is a head-turning, saturated shade. The not unattractive exterior of the previous model has been made bolder – Suzuki dubs the look ‘more emotional’ and it certainly makes a statement with a wide, aggressive grille, muscular arches and a very distinctive shoulder line.
Clever blacking out of the entire windscreen pillar, and similar treatment to a portion of the rear screen pillar (in which the rear doorhandles are placed) make a height reduced by 15mm look even lower, enhancing the purposeful appearance of the car.
To add the final touch, cars available to journalists on the European test launch event in France are to top GLX spec, equivalent to SZ5 in the UK, and so include distinctive LED light signatures on both the front and rear.
As well as that reduced height, the car is 40mm wider than its predecessor (and notably 40mm wider than Japanese-market Swifts), but also 10mm shorter. Suzuki’s latest ‘Heartect’ platform allows a 20mm longer wheelbase, freeing up more interior space including a boot enlarged by 54 litres to 265 litres. It also sees the overall weight of the car cut by some 100kg, good for both handling and efficiency.
On slipping inside both your correspondent and his driving companion immediately comment on the cossetting plushness of the seats – notably this upholstery is standard throughout the range, not just on top models.
The cabin is spacious and well finished, the dash functional with the overriding theme one of circular binnacles, giving a sporty look. A touchscreen infotainment system dominates the centre console, fitted to all bar entry-level models and on this range-topping version including full-colour satellite navigation as well as MirrorLink, Andorid Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration.
The screen is neatly angled gently towards the driver but I admit to still finding it the least user-friendly aspect of Suzuki’s cars, sliding such items as volume controls on the screen is less than precise while the navigation too often fails to keep up with the driver.
There is a second display on the instrument panel between the two main dials, mono on lower models and full colour on our test car, where it acts as a guide to which way power is flowing between the engine and the battery of the mild hybrid assist system fitted to our 1.0-litre Boosterjet model.
Circular theme to new car’s dash.
Display between dials monitors engine-battery power.
Touchscreen least impressive aspect of interior.
Plenty of rear-seat space.
Boot significantly enlarged over previous version.
Powertrains – on the road
The Boosterjet engine, with its 111hp, will be the big seller of the range. Its turbocharged output is 21hp more than the larger capacity 1.2-litre Dualjet unit, making the smaller-engined car faster to 62mph by 1.3 seconds, yet it returns 61.4mpg and 104g/km in standard form, just 3mpg and 6g/km behind the 1.2. Add in the SHVS hybrid assist and the Boosterjet matches the 1.2 on fuel economy and is a shade better on emissions.
More than that, it is a very willing engine – it pulls strongly from low down the rev range like a petrol engine shouldn’t, which proves a boon on a launch event test route that includes a series of hairpin bends climbing and descending the mountainous roads between Nice and Monaco.
Suzuki claims to have carried out extensive testing of their car for Europe on the roads of Europe, or more specifically in the UK and Germany, starting in January 2016. We’ll hold out on a firm view until we get to try a right-hand drive version on the uniquely challenging road surfaces of Britain, but first impressions are good.
The car rides well and smothers the worst bumps, particularly the vicious ramps entering and leaving villages, though extended lengths of uneven surface can make it a little skitty. Its cornering performance is excellent – the Swift turns in exactly where aimed and maintains its poise with good feedback from the wheel, and little body roll.
Equipment levels
UK Swifts will adopt Suzuki’s usual format of SZ3, SZ-T and SZ5 trim levels. The former base market SZ2 grade has gone, as has a three-door body option, because nobody buys three-door small cars these days.
Equipment is impressive – entry-level cars include such niceties as Bluetooth connectivity, air conditioning, DAB, privacy glass, LED daytime running lights and a leather steering wheel.
Suzuki expects as much as half of all Swift sales to be of the mid-range SZ-T version, particularly as you can’t buy a SZ3 with the Boosterjet. Specification add-ons include a rear-view camera, the touchscreen with Smartphone integration, 16-inch alloy wheels and front fog lamps.
Range-topping SZ5 versions, meanwhile include auto air conditioning, a layer of polish on the alloys, satellite navigation, keyless entry and start, electric windows all round, LEDs on front and back, adaptive cruise control and six speakers instead of four.
These cars are also fitted with the top safety specification, the Advanced Forward Detection System. This combines a laser sensor and a camera to provide autonomous emergency braking, lane departure control and an assist function to the high-beam headlamps. Its DSBS – Dual Sensor Brake Support – can run through the options from warning the driver of a collision risk to initialising brake assist to increase braking force if the driver panic brakes, or even full autnomous braking in a final attempt to avoid an impact.
Suzuki tells us an all-wheel-drive variant will also be available on SZ5 grades, though the brand is not revealing yet whether like its predecessors the new Swift will spawn a performance pitched Swift Sport model – we think it quite likely.
The other big unknown is price – these will not be announced until the end of April, just over a month before the car hits UK roads. With there now being no base, three-door option the former £9,000 entry point is likely to be nearer £11,000. But Suzuki is just as likely to maintain the value-based pricing structure which has seen its most recent release, the Ignis, selling at 50 per cent above expectations.
On this basis, the brand’s aspirations towards putting the Swift in the supermini top 10 by swelling annual sales to 20,000 or more may well be realistic. Aside from the less than stellar touchscreen infotainment, the new Suzuki Swift is an impressive package and a definite step forward.

CHEAPEST DIESEL AND PETROL CARS TO RUN REVEALED
The latest analysis from automotive data experts, cap hpi, looks at the total cost of ownership (TCO) to reveal the cars with the lowest motoring costs over the first three years.
The analysis looks at both petrol and diesel motors and for those motorists thinking of making a switch the results might make them think again. Once all the servicing, fuel and other motoring costs are taken into account, which cars perform the best?
In the small car sector, the Dacia Sandero Hatchback 1.0 SCe Access 5dr has the lowest total cost of ownership at £7,419.64 or £206.10 per month, followed by the Dacia Sandero Diesel Hatchback 1.5 dCi Ambiance 5dr at £8,059 (£223.87 per month). Next is the Suzuki Celerio Hatchback 1.0 SZ2 5dr with a TCO of £ 8,350.74 (£231.97 per month).
In the family car sector, the Fiat Tipo Hatchback 1.4 Easy 5dr boasts the lowest total cost of ownership at £12,003.10 (£333.42 per month), making it a firm family favourite. The petrol model is slightly ahead of the Fiat Tipo Diesel Hatchback 1.3 Multijet Easy 5dr at £12,529.20 (£348.03). However, the Fiat Tipo Diesel does beat the petrol hatchback when it comes to service and maintenance costs (£801 petrol v £785 diesel) and significantly on fuel costs (£3,217.10 petrol v £2,109.20 diesel).
The Suzuki Ignis Hatchback 1.2 Dualjet SZ3 5dr is top of the SUV league with a TCO of £9,432.83 (£262.02 per month). Hot on its heels is the Dacia Duster Estate 1.6 SCe 115 Access 5dr with a TCO of £10,405.32 (£289.04 per month). The best performing diesel SUV is the Ssangyong Tivoli Diesel Hatchback 1.6 D SE 5dr at £11583.50 (£321.76 per month).
For those wanting something more sporty, the Smart For Two Cabrio 1.0 Passion 2dr is the leader of the pack when it comes to convertibles and cabriolet coupes with a TCO of £12,072.74 (£335.35 per month) closely followed by Fiat 500c Convertible 1.2 Pop 2dr (£13,394.04) and the Mini Convertible 1.5 Cooper 2dr (£13831.28). Best TCO from diesel is offered by Fiat -500c Diesel Convertible 1.3 Multijet Pop Star 2dr (£14,377.61) and Mini Convertible Diesel 1.5 Cooper D 2dr (£14,415.97).
At the top end of the spectrum in the executive car sector, the Audi A5 Diesel Sportback 2.0 TDI Ultra SE 5dr presents the best TCO at £19,773.73 (£549.27 per month). Second best TCO is offered by the Audi A5 Coupe 2.0 TFSI SE 2dr at £19,862.03 (£549.27). Third in class is the Jaguar – XF Diesel Saloon 2.0d Prestige 4dr at £20389.49 (£566.37).
Philip Nothard, cap hpi consumer and retail editor, comments, “When it comes to the pinpointing the leading cars with the lowest total cost of ownership for the first three years from new and 10,000 miles per annum, our research shows that across the majority of vehicle sectors petrol has a slight edge. However, our data shows it can be often be swings and roundabouts as some vehicles particularly diesels offer competitive ownership costs in terms of service and maintenance, whilst others offer more economical monthly running costs or fuel costs so for the majority of motorists it’s about figuring out what the most important feature is for them as individual vehicle owners.”

The Renault Trezor and Lexus LC have been named winners at the Car Design Awards, presented this week at the 2017 Geneva motor show.
The Renault Trezor won Concept Car Design of the Year 2016, with the Jaguar I-Pace and Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 as runners-up.
The Trezor – its name is French for “treasure” – is a long and low two-door coupé, which made its debut at the Paris Motor Show in October 2016. It was on display again this week in Geneva.
The two-seater, rear-wheel-drive GT has an electric powertrain developed from Renault’s Formula E team. The Trezor is theoretically capable of a sub-four second 0-62mph time and offers three driving modes: normal, sport and fully autonomous. Although being a concept car, none of those claims are able to be validated.

Guy Bird, editor of Car Design Review, revealed that judges were impressed by the Trezor’s “dramatic exterior proportions, its interior flair and magnificent use of materials.”
Bird declared: “The Trezor is a triumph of creative design and a worthy winner.”
Anthony Lo and Stéphane Janin receive the Concept Car Design of the Year 2016 Award for the Renault Trezor.
Meanwhile, the new Lexus LC coupé was named Production Car Design of the Year 2016 with the Volvo V90 and Bugatti Chiron as runners-up.
The Lexus LC luxury coupe is based on the 2012 LF-LC concept car which premiered at the Detroit Motor Show. Designed to rival the BMW 6 series, two versions of the LC are available: the LC500h, a hybrid using both a V6 petrol and electrical powertrain, and the LC500 with a V8 engine.

Commenting on Lexus’ win, Bird said: “It was great to see the fantastic LF-LC concept faithfully translated into the beautiful LC production car with so little compromise.”
The Lexus LC is set to go on sale in the UK in Spring 2017 with pricing and specification yet to be announced.
