On Boot Failures
Headlines everywhere on Friday, the 19th of July, 2024 were about the massive computer outages caused by a faulty update to the CrowdStrike antivirus software. It seems some config file choked up a kernel module causing Windows machines to fail with the infamous Blue Screen of Death.
I recently started a new job and was perhaps a little smug in the fact that in my new job I am no longer responsible for hundreds of endpoints running CrowdStrike.
Karma's a bitch though.
I shut down my home PC Friday night to install a memory upgrade and after powering it back on I was met with the very same Blue Screen of Death.
"A critical process died" it told me, with no information about what said process actually was.
And no log files.
And no dump files.
System Restore failed. sfc /scannow failed. dism /cleanup-image failed. Everything I could find failed. I couldn't even just reinstall Windows over the existing installation because apparently that requires being already booted into the OS that currently isn't running.
The log files from dism led me to believe the problem might be related to registry corruption, but my attempts at replacing system registry files with clean ones from an install wim were not successful.
I was grasping at straws. Starting from scratch with a clean install is daunting and would have set me back weeks. I was contemplating pulling out an old SSD and just running with Linux Mint for a while.
Through desperation, I downloaded Hiren's BootCD PE so I could poke around a little more. None of the tools included there were able to resolve the issue either, but just having access to a standard Explorer shell and a web browser helped.
Finally I came across ShadowCopyView, a program that can explore the System Restore images that Windows (can) take regularly. In one last desperate effort, I moved out all of the system registry files from C:\Windows\System32\config and used ShadowCopyView to replace them with copies from an automatic restore point the previous Monday.
That actually did the trick. I was able to reboot into my primary Windows partition and sign in like normal.
I have no idea what may have been lost in a few days of registry updates, and I have no idea what may have caused the problem to begin with. But I am happy I was able to find something in the end that would get me back into my system without having to reinstall everything from scratch.
... Although maybe I should anyway.
And should anyone encounter something similar in the future, these were the kind of errors I was seeing that a Google search wasn't really coming up with anything useful:
dism.log: failed to open registry root
dism.log: failed to query for path to user profiles directory
dism.log: failed to load the default user profile registry hive
dism.log: failed to load offline store from boot directory
srttrail.txt: pending package install
strtrail.txt: boot manager generic failure

Haven't done a computer status update in a little bit. Raspberry Pi media server has been psuedo-retired. It's currently still functioning as a media server for a christmas display at my wife's work until the end of December.
It has been successfully replaced by the Dell Optiplex that I got from work. I was able to skip the process of building a migration script for the server (to allow files to be moved and refound via filename & hash), but only because I've been mapping storage outside the server's webroot via link files in the upload directory. So on the new HD the files are actually in the upload directory rather than linked to it. As far as the server knows they're in the same place.
I transferred the software between machines by making a new install of vogon on the optiplex and then importing a mysqldump of the existing install into it, bringing the user accounts, media data, and other configuration elements with it. I did end up changing the storage engine of the data and data_meta tables into innodb (from isam) and adding some additional indexing. There were some noticeable performance differences on the generated join queries between servers. We were looking at 7sec+ lookup times for searches in the audio module. I'm still not sure if it's a mariadb version difference between raspbian and ubuntu lts, if something got corrupted in the export/import process, or if it was some strange storage lookup difference between running the database off of a SETA Hard-Drive versus an SD card. I initially thought maybe it was a fragmentation issue, but the built in optimization processes didn't really impact it, but with the adjustments to the indexing we're regularly getting query times measured in microseconds versus seconds, so it's working pretty well now.
The x86 processor and the faster storage (without the power dropout issues) have really improved the experience. Especially with reading comic books.
If I haven't explained it before, the way the CBZ reader works is that it sends a file list from the archive to the browser, the browser requests an image, and the server extracts the image data into RAM, base64 encodes it, and sends it back to the browser. It's a process that is bottlenecked by both CPU and storage speeds, so it's noticeably snappier on the new machine, even if the CPU is over a decade old at this point.
I'm actually considering taking a crack at forking mozilla's pdf.js to work a similar way, sending a page of data at a time, to decrease transfer times and allow lower memory devices to open large PDFs without having to actually download the whole thing. I suspect that means I'm going to have to build smaller single page PDF files on the fly, which would mean coming up with some kind of solution for in document links. I'm still in the phase of deciding if it's enough of a problem to put effort into solving, so I haven't done enough research to know if it will be easy or difficult. It's always hard to tell in situations like this because just about every web reader project assumes downloading the whole file, and the question is do they do it this way because it's hard to sub-divide the format, or do they do it because full clientside logic can be demoed on github pages.

I was in the process of getting my computer ready to upgrade to Windows 11 by installing a TPM module.
I heard about this a couple days ago and looked into it, because I was like "surely it can't be that bad." It is. It's that bad.
And the worst thing about this is that it'll give call center scammers another way to fuck people over. You know those scams where they link into your computer? Now they don't even have to have you log into your bank account. They can just go right to the folder where all these images are kept and take whatever they want. Take the whole thing if they want, and look at it later.
And...
I don't care if it's easy to turn off. Microsoft is well-known for turning things the fuck back on whenever they want. And honestly, I'd rather have a lack of security updates on my Windows 10 system than allow a corporation a free back door into my computer whenever the fuck they want.
Who the fuck was like "you know what's a great idea? Installing literal spyware on our new OS."
I can't believe this. We've spent the last twenty years making software like oracle obsolete because it was impossible to close all the security flaws, and now we're just letting Microsoft have all our data.
As someone studying security RIGHT NOW (like, I'm getting my Masters in it) I highly recommend downgrading back to Windows 10 if you can, until someone at Microsoft screws their head back on and cancels this shitshow.
Literal definition of spyware:

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Your First Animation Project
Tumblr media
Animation is an incredible medium that brings static images to life. Whether you’re interested in making short films, explainer videos, or animated logos, the animation process involves creativity, patience, and technical know-how. If you’re ready to dive into the world of animation, this guide will walk you through the basic steps to create your first animation project—from concept to final export.
Many aspiring animators begin their journey by enrolling in the top animation course in Udaipur or choosing a well-rounded animation training institute in Udaipur. These institutions provide the foundational skills needed to build a career or pursue passion projects in animation.
Let’s break down the step-by-step process of making your first animation.
Step 1: Develop Your Idea
Every great animation starts with a strong idea. Ask yourself:
What story do I want to tell?
Who are the characters?
What is the setting or background?
What emotion or message do I want to convey?
Even a 10-second animation can carry a powerful message if it has a clear concept. At this stage, jot down your thoughts and create a short synopsis. If you’re enrolled in an animation training institute in Udaipur, your instructors can help you refine your idea and guide it into a visual narrative.
Step 2: Write a Script
Once your idea is clear, write a simple script. This doesn’t have to be overly complex, especially if your animation is short or non-verbal. The script outlines what happens in your animation scene by scene.
For example:
Scene 1: A small cat wakes up, stretches, and looks out the window. Scene 2: It sees a butterfly and chases it across the yard. Scene 3: The butterfly lands on the cat’s nose.
Keep it concise and focused. Many students working on their first projects through the top animation course in Udaipur start with one-scene animations to learn pacing and visual storytelling.
Step 3: Create a Storyboard
A storyboard is a sequence of drawings that represents each key moment of your animation. Think of it as a comic strip version of your animation project. It helps you visualize the flow of the story and determine camera angles, character positions, and transitions.
You can sketch this by hand or use digital tools like Storyboarder or Photoshop. This step is crucial in planning your scenes and is often emphasized early in courses at a top-rated animation training institute in Udaipur.
Step 4: Design Characters and Backgrounds
Now it’s time to create your visual elements. Design your characters, props, and environments. Keep the designs simple if you’re just starting out.
Ask yourself:
What does your character look like?
What are their signature features or color palette?
What is the setting—indoor, outdoor, futuristic, or traditional?
Software like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or Krita are commonly used for creating 2D assets. Most animation courses in Udaipur include dedicated modules on digital illustration and character design.
Step 5: Choose Your Animation Software
There are many software options depending on your animation style:
2D Animation: Adobe Animate, Toon Boom Harmony, OpenToonz
3D Animation: Blender, Autodesk Maya
Stop-Motion: Dragonframe, Stop Motion Studio
For beginners, Adobe Animate or Blender (free and powerful) are great starting points. At the best animation training institutes in Udaipur, students receive hands-on practice with industry-standard software, making the learning curve easier.
Step 6: Animate!
Now comes the fun (and time-consuming) part—animating your project.
Start with a basic structure:
Keyframes: Major movements or poses
In-betweens: Transitions between keyframes for smooth motion
Timing and Spacing: Controls speed and rhythm of actions
Remember, animation is all about the illusion of movement. Whether you're animating a character jumping or a logo spinning, focus on natural motion and emotion. Start small and refine as you go.
Students often practice "walk cycles" or "bouncing ball" animations in the top animation course in Udaipur to master the fundamentals.
Step 7: Add Sound and Music
Sound design enhances your animation significantly. Background music, voiceovers, and sound effects (SFX) can add depth and mood.
Free resources for royalty-free audio include:
freesound.org
bensound.com
incompetech.com
Animation institutes often provide training on syncing audio with visuals to ensure professional-level output.
Step 8: Render and Export
Once your animation is complete:
Check for any errors (missing frames, audio misalignment, etc.)
Render it using the right resolution and format (MP4 is a common choice)
Export and share it on YouTube, Instagram, or your portfolio
This is the stage where everything comes together—and you see your hard work in motion!
Why Study at an Animation Training Institute in Udaipur?
Udaipur is quickly becoming a hub for digital and creative arts education. Choosing the top animation course in Udaipur offers several benefits:
Expert mentorship and structured learning
Access to modern labs and tools
Practical projects and showreel building
Placement assistance and internship opportunities

Samsotech is not just a system development company. It is a technological organism embedded in the reality of the UAE hotel business. Here, documents cease to be paper, but become data. A passport? An identity card? Insert it, and the system will do the rest. No pause, no unnecessary movements, no mistakes. The kiosk in the lobby is open 24/7, like a watchman without fatigue.
Inside is a powerful authentication software. MRZ, VIZ, QR code, RFID module, optical text recognition, automatic data extraction, character recognition, image comparison, face photo — all elements act synchronously. Identification and verification of a person takes place on the fly, with an accuracy approaching absolute. The API and SDK allow you to seamlessly integrate the system into any hotel solution. Adaptive lighting, infrared and ultraviolet illumination provide visual control in all conditions — day, night, noise, movement, whatever.
Every process is protected. Encryption, digital authenticity, anti-photoshop, fraud protection. After registration, the data is deleted. There is nothing superfluous. Only the result. The front office is connected. The system scans, verifies, checks, and monitors. Electronic gates, self—service, local processing, remote scanning - everything is controlled by an integrated computer.
Samsotech is when registration becomes a technology. Not a favor. Not in a routine. It's about confidence.
