VP Harris challenges Trump on immigration

On Wednesday, VP Kamala Harris spoke at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s 47th Annual Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. Harris took on Trump's nightmarish threat to deport millions of immigrants if he is elected.

Harris said,

While we fight to move our nation forward to a brighter future, Donald Trump and his extremist allies will keep trying to pull us backward. We all remember what they did to tear families apart, and now they have pledged to carry out the largest deportation, a mass deportation, in American history. Imagine what that would look like and what that would be? How’s that going to happen? Massive raids? Massive detention camps? What are they talking about?

As VP Harris said, it is a dangerous fantasy to believe that Trump could deport ten million immigrants. An operation of that scale is beyond the resources of the federal and state governments combined. Although the effort would not succeed, it would lead to economic chaos as the labor pool is jolted by the sudden disappearance of workers who fill entry level service jobs, harvest America’s crops, provide home care for the elderly, and provide significant portions of the workforce in construction, hospitality, and manufacturing industries.

If you don’t have time to watch Harris’s entire speech, I recommend viewing the segment in which she frames reproductive rights as one of the freedoms guaranteed to Americans. VP Harris’s comments on abortion and reproductive freedom are powerful and moving. She continues to be an effective, focused campaigner who is sticking to the Democratic messaging of “freedom” and “an opportunity economy.”

Her proposals include a $6,000 tax credit for families with newborns, expansion of the child tax credit, expansion of the earned income credit, a $50,000 deduction for new business owners, making rent affordable, incentivizing the construction of 3 million starter homes (as opposed to McMansions), subsidizing $25,000 of the down payment for first time homeowners, and reducing the cost of prescription drugs. The Federal Reserve cuts interest rates by 0.5%

The Biden-Harris administration significantly reduced inflation levels while sustaining robust growth in the US GDP. As a result, the Federal Reserve announced today that it was cutting the prime interest rate by 0.5% and suggested that additional cuts would be forth coming. Even Trump admitted that “it was a big cut,” although he suggested the timing was political. In truth, the cut was overdue. The Fed waited too long to reduce rates. See Common Dreams, Fed 'Waited Too Long' But Finally Cut Interest Rates. As noted in the Common Dreams article,

Center for Economic and Policy Research senior economist Dean Baker also welcomed that the Fed is changing course, saying: "This is a belated recognition that the battle against inflation has been won. Contrary to the predictions of almost all economists, including those at the Fed, this victory was won without a major uptick in unemployment."

Pennsylvania voters no longer prefer former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris on the economy in a poll that shows the Democratic presidential nominee all but erasing the deficit on which candidate can best handle the top issue for voters this fall. In a Quinnipiac University poll of likely Pennsylvania voters released Wednesday, Trump’s advantage over Ms. Harris was just 50% to 48%, a two-point advantage well within the survey’s margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.

Harris continues to do everything just right. While there is no guarantee of success, we should be gratified that we have a candidate who is running such a terrific campaign!

Trump's effort to cram voter suppression bill through Congress fails

Trump ordered Speaker Mike Johnson to make a futile attempt to pass a continuing resolution for the budget that included the GOP voter-suppression bill that would require proof of citizenship to register as a voter. (Note that our nation has survived for 235 years without requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote.) The bill was doomed to fail—and Mike Johnson knew it. But Trump ordered him to jump and Johnson’s only question was, “How high, sir?”

To be clear, Trump wants to force the US into a financial crisis for political advantage. He said on Truth Social,

If Republicans don’t get the SAVE Act, and every ounce of it, they should not agree to a Continuing Resolution in any way, shape, or form.

But extremists in the GOP caucus know that Mike Johnson will cave. Per Marjorie Taylor Greene, “Johnson is leading a fake fight that he has no intention of actually fighting.”

Americans deserve better than a House GOP caucus willing to hold the budget hostage for Donald Trump.

Trump's desperation is showing

Trump is promising tax cuts like a man who can smell defeat. On Wednesday, he promised New Yorkers that he would remove caps on federal deductions for state and local taxes (SALT). Trump's position is absurd because he proposed and obtained the SALT caps as a way of punishing taxpayers in New York, New Jersey, and California (among other states). Now that he senses that he might lose, he is telling voters in those states that he will remove the caps he instituted.

Members of Congress immediately trashed the idea. Although capping the SALT deduction was unfair to taxpayers in states that fund their operations and pay into the federal coffers, reversing the policy would add $1.2 trillion dollars to the deficit. Trump's flip-flop is a sign of his willingness to promise anything to anyone to be re-elected. Trump's desperation is a more reliable sign of the state of the race than the polls!

Wall Street Journal debunks JD Vance immigrant / cat story

The Wall Street Journal published an article on Wednesday that reported (a) the city manager of Springfield told JD Vance that there was no evidence to support the cat-eating immigrant story before JD Vance doubled-down on the false claim on social media, and (b) the woman who filed a police report claiming her cat had been taken by Haitians later found her cat hiding in the basement of her house.

Per the WSJ,

[Vance] asked point-blank, ‘Are the rumors true of pets being taken and eaten?’” recalled [Springfield City Manager] Heck. “I told him no. There was no verifiable evidence or reports to show this was true. I told them these claims were baseless.” By then, Vance had already posted about the rumors to his 1.9 million followers on X. Yet he kept the post up, and repeated an even more insistent version of the claim the next morning.

The WSJ article takes a deep dive into the situation in Springfield and is well worth your time to read the entire article. The WSJ reporters lay out in detail how Vance and Trump are exploiting an immigrant population that is helping Springfield to grow and prosper after decades of decline:

The local economy boomed. Business owners said they were grateful to have workers eager to work long shifts and do what it took to meet production goals. New subdivisions sprung up in the cornfields outside town. New restaurants opened. The Haitian flag flew at City Hall.

Growth came with growing pains. The number of non-native English speakers in the public schools quadrupled to more than 1,000 children. The local clinic and hospital were overwhelmed with people fleeing a country where healthcare had been scant. Traffic increased, as did frustration with drivers more accustomed with the chaotic streets of Port-au-Prince than the orderly grid of Springfield.

One thing is clear: Vance and Trump know the rumors have no basis in fact but continue to promote them—thereby hurting the people of Springfield. Trump claims he will visit Springfield—over the objections of the mayor and the Governor of Ohio (both Trump-supporting Republicans!). Our two parties have both changed, and that explains why one will win, and one lose in the midterm elections.

The old Democrats have faded away after being overwhelmed by radicals and socialists.

Moderates who once embraced Bill Clinton’s opportunistic “third way” are now either irrelevant or nonexistent.

Once considered too wacky and socialist to be taken seriously, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), the performance-art “squad,” the radicals of the Congressional Black Caucus, and Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and her hard progressive wing are today’s Democratic Party kingpins.

The alienating radicals of Antifa and Black Lives Matter often serve as the new party’s shock troops on the streets. They opportunistically appear to push the party to embrace no-bail laws, defunding the police, and the destruction of the fossil fuel industry.

Since none of those positions poll even close to 50 percent with the public, the Democrats routinely either slur their opponents as racists, nativists, and climate denialists or obsess on another Trump psychodrama distraction from the Russia collusion hoax to the Mar-a-Lago raid.

What “blue dog” centrists are left in the Democratic Party either keep mum or, like Tulsi Gabbard, flee in disgust.

Donald Trump also recalibrated the Republican Party and helped to turn it into a nationalist-populist movement that would rather win rudely than lose politely. The MAGA agenda pushed Jacksonian deterrence rather than unpopular nation-building abroad. It finally focused on fair rather than just free trade.  Republicans now unite in demanding only legal immigration and promoting domestic investment rather than globalist outsourcing and offshoring.

In response, many of the old Bush-Romney country-club wing left in disgust. Others licked their wounds as fanatical NeverTrump something or others.

Both parties have also been radically changed by additional issues of class, race, and wealth.

Compare the income profiles of voters, whether by ZIP codes or congressional districts. A once lunch-bucket carrying, union member Democratic Party has become the enclave of three key constituencies.

First, there is the subsidized and often inner-city poor.

Second, the meat of the party, is the upscale, bicoastal professional and suburban credentialed classes.

Third, the real rulers of the party are the hyper-rich of Big Tech, Wall Street, Hollywood, the corporate boardroom, the administrative state, the media, and the legal world. Almost all these institutions have lost public confidence and poll miserably. Their cocooned leaders are never subject to the ramifications of their own often unworkable policies.

In contrast, Republicans this election cycle concerned themselves mostly with material issues of the battered middle classes—inflation, the price of fuel and energy, a secure border, crime, parental control of schools, and realist foreign policy.

Reforming social security, reducing capital gains taxes, and pruning back regulations are still doctrinaire Republican agendas. But they are not iconic of the middle-class dominated party as they once were in the age of Ronald Reagan.

Democrats, as the champions of the well-off, remain redistributionist and seek to tax the middle class to fund ever more government programs.

Joe Biden canceled some student loans. He printed lots of money. And he expanded entitlements. But even these calcified Great Society issues are drowned out by the real concerns of the professional leftist elites who run the Democratic Party.

After all, they do not worry much about the price of diesel fuel, or whether border communities are swarmed by illegal immigration. They are indifferent to whether it is unsafe to take a late-night subway ride. And they are not too worried about being mugged or whether they can splurge for a weekend steak.

Instead, condescending Democratic movers and shakers are obsessed with climate change and sermonize about ending fossil fuels. Diversity, equity, and inclusion—all mandated equality-of-result agendas—are their cultural religion, along with transgender advocacy, and abortion on demand in all 50 states.

The net result of these radical shifts is that Republicans began bonding with the neglected working classes and those without college degrees. That way they drowned out left-wing racial obsessions with ecumenical class concerns.

In the process, the new Republican Party in 2022 is poised to win 45-50 percent of Hispanic voters and a near record number of African-American men.

In our changed political landscape, poorer Republican candidates are routinely outspent in most of their races. Conservatives are more likely to be canceled by left-wing anti-free-expression institutions like Facebook and Twitter. Their access to online knowledge and communication is often warped by monopolies and cartels like Google and Apple.

The Democrats claim Republicans are racists. But they cannot explain why record numbers of minorities are now deserting the Democrats, and the blue-state urban areas they run, to join the new Republicans.

As Republicans diminished the role of race, the Democrats grew ever more obsessed about it—and ignored class. The Oprahs, Meghan Markles, and MSNBC anchors of the world fixate over skin color in direct proportion to their own affluence, status, and privilege—as their hypocrisy turns off the middle classes of all races.

In sum, the party of old left-wing progressives has become one of rich regressives. And once country-club Republicans are becoming a party of middle-class populists. And the election will reflect both those changes.

Hungary's investigation of Scientology results in indictments of 11 for tax fraud

As part of a 2017 police raid, the National Tax and Customs Administration (i.e. the Hungarian IRS) seized a large amount of documents as part of an investigation into Scientology.

Scientology is registered in Hungary as a religious association and chose not to adopt Value-Added Tax – this means they do not charge VAT (i.e. sales tax) but they can’t reclaim it either. The problem is, if you are providing business services and you are engaged in commercial operations, you can only do that if your annual income is a maximum of $34,000 USD. Scientology in Hungary claims that all they do is for the public benefit, that they are selling religious services and artifacts, so therefore this does not apply to them.

The Hungarian tax office launched an extensive investigation, looked into their books, interviewed suspects and witnesses etc., and determined that Scientology operations were commercial in nature. They calculated a sum of $1.7 million USD in tax debt, which is basically the sum of all the VAT they did not charge for the Purif, courses, auditing, books, E-meters, etc., for the fiscal years between 2012 and 2017.

Eleven executives and treasury personnel of the Church of Scientology Budapest have now been charged with $1.7 million USD tax evasion (VAT fraud) committed in a criminal conspiracy. The prosecutor is asking for actual prison time to be served and appropriate fines.

According to the investigation, the Scientologists fraudulently and knowingly reported fees paid as part of business transactions (training courses, purification programs, books, CDs etc.) as tax-free charitable donations in order to avoid taxes.

So, the tax authority considers this a knowingly committed tax fraud, executed by the defendants as a part of a criminal conspiracy.

There is no statement from the church yet, but the apologist journal Bitter Winter, perhaps anticipating today’s news, in October criticized the Hungarian government for investigating the Scientologists.

“Tax laws were weaponized to discriminate against religious and spiritual minorities and violate internationally recognized FoRB (freedom of religion or belief) principles,” the journal complained.

We will see how it develops. There will be a trial, appeals, Supreme Court petition etc. So it will take a few years to see the end results.

BBC raids: India arm lost PF money in IL&FS, DHFL scam

BBC World Service India Private Ltd, whose offices were subject to a survey today by the income-tax authorities over non-compliance with the Transfer Pricing Rules, had to write off ₹7.2 crore from its pension fund following its exposure to the two tainted non-banking companies, IL&FS and DHFL.

The New Delhi-based subsidiary of the UK’s national broadcaster along with other group entities, BBC Studios India Pvt Ltd and BBC Global News India Pvt Ltd, has a provident fund scheme under a trust called the BBC Worldwide India Employees Provident Fund. The trust had an exposure of ₹2.85 crore and ₹4.35 crore in the securities of IL&FS and DHFL, respectively. It is not clear if the “securities” only refer to debt or equity as well.

During the year (FY21), the company provided for ₹1.59 crore, including interest accrued till date, as a proportionate share of exposure of 80% and 35% of the investment made in IL&FS and DHFL, respectively, and accounted for the same as an exceptional item in its P&L. A sum of ₹1.44 crore on the investments was considered as a contingent liability and was to be assessed in the future based on the resolution proceedings, stated the company's filings. Fortune India, however, could not access the company’s financials for 2021-22.

Incidentally, rating agencies CARE and Brickworks, which have since been barred by the market regulator, had given an ‘AAA’ rating to DHFL’s non-convertible debentures (NCD) between 2016 and 2019. The bonds were subsequently downgraded to a default rating (D) after the NBFC began defaulting on its obligations. Besides commercial banks that owed ₹35,000 crore to DHFL, fixed deposit and NCD investors were the biggest lenders with an exposure of ₹45,000 crore.

With regards to the search, the tax authorities issued a statement today stating that the survey was in view of BBC’s deliberate non-compliance “for years” with the transfer pricing rules and vast diversion of profits. “As a result of the same, several notices have been issued to the BBC. However, the BBC has been continuously defiant and non-compliant and has significantly diverted profits,” read the statement.

According to the authorities, the key focus of the survey is to look into the manipulation of prices for unauthorised benefits, including non-compliance under transfer pricing rules, persistent and deliberate violation of transfer pricing norms; deliberate diversion of significant amounts of profits, and non-adherence in maintaining arm’s length arrangement in the case of allocation of profit. The company, which paid ₹2.04 crore in income tax in FY21, already has an ongoing case with the tax authorities but believes the outcome will not adversely impact its financial position and operations.

Incidentally, BBC World Service India, which produces content for radio, television and websites under contractual agreements with its parent and other group companies, in its annual statement mentioned that it has a comprehensive system of maintenance of information and documents as required by the transfer pricing regulation under Sections 92-92F of the Income-Tax Act, 1961.

“Since the law requires the existence of such information and documentation to be contemporaneous in nature, the company continuously updates its documentation for the international transactions entered into with the associated enterprises during the financial year and expects such records to be in existence latest by the due date for the same. The management is of the opinion that its international transactions are at arm’s length so that the aforesaid legislation will not have any impact on the financial statements, particularly on the amount of tax expense and that of provision for taxation,” the company filings state.

During 2020-21, the transactions that the company entered into on an arm’s length basis, involve the parent company, and fellow subsidiary, BBC Global News India Pvt Ltd. नई दिल्ली. सरकार के मुताबिक आयकर छापों में जब्त रकम में 2000 के नोटों की हिस्सेदारी घट रही है। मीडिया रिपोर्ट्स के मुताबिकवित्त मंत्री निर्मला सीतारमण ने मंगलवार को राज्यसभा में बताया कि वित्त वर्ष 2017-18 में आयकर के छापों में मिली रकम में 67.9% मुद्रा 2000 के नोटों के रूप में थी। बीते वित्त वर्ष (2018-19) में यह आंकड़ा 65.9% और चालू वित्त वर्ष (2019-20) में अब तक 43.2% रहा है।
