Tax Evasion Allegations Trigger Raids at 60 Locations Linked to DMK Leader EV Velu

In a significant development, the Income Tax department initiated raids on Friday at 60 locations connected to DMK leader and Tamil Nadu minister EV Velu. The searches are part of an investigation into alleged tax evasion involving educational institutions, sand quarries, and building construction activities.

Nearly 200 Income Tax officials conducted simultaneous searches in Chennai, Thiruvannamalai, Karur, and Coimbatore. The properties targeted included residences, offices, and educational institutions associated with individuals linked to EV Velu.

This is not the first time that Income Tax officials have probed properties related to EV Velu. In 2021, during earlier searches, discrepancies were reportedly found in the operations of sand quarries.

EV Velu, a senior leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party, currently serves as the Minister for Public Works in the Tamil Nadu government led by Chief Minister MK Stalin.

The raids have drawn condemnation from the DMK, with party spokesperson Saravanan describing them as a response by the BJP-led Centre to counter the growing influence of the INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties.

Chief Minister MK Stalin, during a recent event, accused the BJP government at the Centre of intimidating opposition parties by allegedly misusing central agencies for conducting raids. He highlighted the use of the Income Tax department and Enforcement Directorate against those expressing views against the BJP government. Stalin also referenced the recent incident involving phone tapping, where Apple Inc issued a security notification to opposition leaders, further fueling concerns over privacy and political motivations.

Clearly, y'all don't care about Jews, and the fact that Hamas is violently antisemitic doesn't seem matter to any of you. So let me go with a new approach, of equal truth and value. Hamas is violently anti-Palestinian.

This past week, Hamas attacked evacuation routes and prevented Gazan citizens from fleeing an active warzone. [1]

They did that because they routinely use Gazan civilians as human shields. Hamas intentionally builds military targets close to schools, hospitals, and mosques, putting soft targets in the way of both incoming and outgoing fire. Hamas encourages Gazan civilians and children to stand on the roofs of buildings they know the IDF is targeting. [2]

Hamas has refused to allow elections in Gaza since 2006. Not just Palestinian National Authority elections, mind you. No open elections for any office have been held in seventeen years. Palestinian rights to free elections and self-determination have been denied by Hamas. [3] (And good luck to anyone who tries to blame that on Israel, because elections were held by the PNA in the West Bank in 2012, 2017, 2021 and 2022. It's Hamas's intention alone to purge democracy.)

Hamas's track record on human rights is appalling. Palestinian prisoners in Gaza face unfair trials and death sentences after being tortured by police. Palestinian women are prevented from accessing the legal systems to escape domestic abuse situations. Political dissidents in Hamas, even ones who merely support the other half of the Palestinian government, have been summarily executed. [4] [5]

Peaceful organizers in Palestine protested Hamas's massive tax hikes in 2019. Hamas security forces responded by assaulting demonstrators, tracking them down, raiding their homes, and detaining them. And, as previously mentioned, prisoners in Gaza are not treated well by Hamas. [6]

Edit Nov.5, 10:30 PM: I forgot to add arguably the most important thing-- Hamas manipulates the humanitarian aid they receive away from helping Gazans and toward killing Jews. 5% of Hamas's budget actually gets used for humanitarian aid, while 55% goes to military use. Construction equipment intended to rebuild Gaza's crumbling infrastructure is used to build a complex series of underground tunnels. Those tunnels in turn are used to smuggle Iranian military equipment into the country. They were also used for human trafficking in the October 7th attacks. [7]

If you actually want Palestinians to be free, you can't just replace Israel with Hamas. But it's not like they're the only option for supporting Palestinian liberation. While Fatah doesn't have an immaculate historical track record, it now operates as a leftist, democratic socialist, secular Palestinian government that fights for a two-state solution. Similarly, Arab-Israeli political parties like the Hadash-Ta'al coalition support leftist, anti-Zionist, and two-state solutions from within the Israeli parliament.

You can and should support Palestinian liberation movements that abuse neither Jewish nor Arab human rights and dignities. Plenty of them exist out there. But if y'all continue to throw your weight behind an antisemitic and anti-democratic terrorist regime, Palestinians and Jews will both take note of exactly where you stand.

Hiding on a Greek island

Eduardo was a successful entrepreneur, running a chain of gyms in the southern part of the country. However, Eduardo had a secret side business involving steroids, which added an element of sketchiness to his otherwise perfect life. Eduardo maintained his physique by working out in his gyms daily, and during the summer, he engaged in various outdoor sports while in winter he indulged in winter sports.

But Eduardo's life took an unexpected turn when his father, a wealthy mafia boss, decided to leave him alone and keep him out of the dangerous mafia business. Despite his father's wishes, Eduardo couldn't help but be drawn to his father's world. Little did he know that fate had something else in store for him.

One day, Eduardo's father warned him to lay low for a couple of weeks, revealing that he was making a tax deal with the government in exchange for some valuable information. He urged Eduardo to hire a bodyguard named Massimo, a former undercover military personnel, to ensure his safety. Following his father's advice, Eduardo hired Massimo to protect him during this uncertain time.

However, things took a dark turn when threatening letters arrived at Eduardo's gyms, warning him that if he didn't pay up, they would come after him instead of his father. A few days later, tragedy struck when his father was killed in a car bombing. Eduardo was devastated by the loss, but he suddenly found himself the main heir to his father's fortune and, reluctantly, the mafia business.

Eduardo made the decision to follow in his father's footsteps but with a twist: he decided to help the government take down criminals instead. As a result, many criminals lost their source of income and were arrested, leaving Eduardo feeling increasingly isolated and vulnerable. The gyms suffered as well, as the steroid trade came to a halt due to fear of police raids.

Eduardo considered hiring more bodyguards to protect himself but Massimo advised against it, warning that it would make his whereabouts known to more people. Instead, Massimo suggested going underground for a few weeks. So Eduardo and Massimo took a private jet and escaped to one of Eduardo's luxurious houses in the south of France.

Life in the French mansion was pleasant, yet monotonous. He would often go for runs with Massimo and enjoy a cup of coffee and a croissant at a small terrace. Despite the tranquility, Eduardo couldn't ignore the fact that his business was suffering, and his gyms were not as profitable due to the halted steroid trade.

As time passed, Eduardo's waistline started to expand, and his jeans became uncomfortably snug. Realizing he needed to make a change, he asked Massimo for a rower to continue his fitness routine. Meanwhile, Massimo took charge of their meals, ordering from local restaurants and ensuring that Eduardo had regular breaks to enjoy delicious food.

However, their peaceful respite didn't last long. Massimo discovered that the manager overseeing Eduardo's real estate was being followed, and in a daring move, he evacuated Eduardo from the French mansion. Unfortunately, during their escape, shots were fired, and Eduardo was wounded in the shoulder and legs. After a month-long hospital stay and a challenging period of rehabilitation, Eduardo was moved to a small Greek island where he owned another property.

On the Greek island, Eduardo's only outside contact was with Stavros, a local fisherman who brought groceries and fresh baked goods to him. Despite their seclusion, Massimo ensured that Eduardo could continue running his business through a secured internet connection. As the months passed, Eduardo's lack of movement, combined with the constant flow of delicious Greek food and pastries, caused his weight to skyrocket.

It wasn't until one Christmas when Eduardo ventured into the village that he encountered Alexios, the attractive son of a local bakery owner. Eduardo was instantly smitten and couldn't bear to be away from Alexios. Massimo facilitated their meetings, ensuring Eduardo's safety, and soon, Alexios became a regular guest at their dinners, often providing decadent desserts.

Eduardo's relationship with Alexios further contributed to his weight gain, as the bakery owner's son constantly showered him with high-calorie treats. Despite the weight gain, Eduardo embraced his new life on the Greek island. He rarely left his house during the summer months, basking in the sun and enjoying his lover's company.

After spending two years in seclusion, Massimo believed it was safe for Eduardo to return to Italy. Although Eduardo had grown accustomed to his isolated life and running his business remotely, he decided to stay on the Greek island, with Alexios joining him.

Not content with idleness, Eduardo proposed a plan to the island's mayor to develop a spa retreat on a prime piece of land. This venture aimed to attract wealthy clientele and infuse a steady stream of income into the local economy. With this project to focus on, Eduardo's life became more fulfilling, and he had a legitimate reason to stay on the island.

And so, Eduardo's life took a different path from what he had imagined. While his waistline had expanded, he had found love and contentment on the tranquil Greek island. His days were now spent attending to his business and enjoying the company and delectable treats provided by Alexios. Despite the challenges he faced, Eduardo had a created new life that truly suited him.

An Iranian source: The Iranian missile attack in April was not really intercepted as described in the media.  Most of the missiles that were launched simply fell on the way and did not even reach the territory of Israel.  A month ago, several test launches of surface-to-surface missiles were carried out after undergoing upgrades/repairs.

VP Harris challenges Trump on immigration

On Wednesday, VP Kamala Harris spoke at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s 47th Annual Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. Harris took on Trump's nightmarish threat to deport millions of immigrants if he is elected.

Harris said,

While we fight to move our nation forward to a brighter future, Donald Trump and his extremist allies will keep trying to pull us backward. We all remember what they did to tear families apart, and now they have pledged to carry out the largest deportation, a mass deportation, in American history. Imagine what that would look like and what that would be? How’s that going to happen? Massive raids? Massive detention camps? What are they talking about?

As VP Harris said, it is a dangerous fantasy to believe that Trump could deport ten million immigrants. An operation of that scale is beyond the resources of the federal and state governments combined. Although the effort would not succeed, it would lead to economic chaos as the labor pool is jolted by the sudden disappearance of workers who fill entry level service jobs, harvest America’s crops, provide home care for the elderly, and provide significant portions of the workforce in construction, hospitality, and manufacturing industries.

If you don’t have time to watch Harris’s entire speech, I recommend viewing the segment in which she frames reproductive rights as one of the freedoms guaranteed to Americans. VP Harris’s comments on abortion and reproductive freedom are powerful and moving. She continues to be an effective, focused campaigner who is sticking to the Democratic messaging of “freedom” and “an opportunity economy.”

As a reminder, Kamala Harris’s Opportunity Economy focuses on making the lives of middle-class Americans better. Her proposals include a $6,000 tax credit for families with newborns, expansion of the child tax credit, expansion of the earned income credit, a $50,000 deduction for new business owners, making rent affordable, incentivizing the construction of 3 million starter homes (as opposed to McMansions), subsidizing $25,000 of the down payment for first time homeowners, and reducing the cost of prescription drugs. The Federal Reserve cuts interest rates by 0.5%

The Biden-Harris administration significantly reduced inflation levels while sustaining robust growth in the US GDP. As a result, the Federal Reserve announced today that it was cutting the prime interest rate by 0.5% and suggested that additional cuts would be forth coming. Even Trump admitted that “it was a big cut,” although he suggested the timing was political. In truth, the cut was overdue. The Fed waited too long to reduce rates. See Common Dreams, Fed 'Waited Too Long' But Finally Cut Interest Rates. As noted in the Common Dreams article,

Center for Economic and Policy Research senior economist Dean Baker also welcomed that the Fed is changing course, saying: "This is a belated recognition that the battle against inflation has been won. Contrary to the predictions of almost all economists, including those at the Fed, this victory was won without a major uptick in unemployment."

Per the Post-Gazette,

Pennsylvania voters no longer prefer former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris on the economy in a poll that shows the Democratic presidential nominee all but erasing the deficit on which candidate can best handle the top issue for voters this fall. In a Quinnipiac University poll of likely Pennsylvania voters released Wednesday, Trump’s advantage over Ms. Harris was just 50% to 48%, a two-point advantage well within the survey’s margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.

Harris continues to do everything just right. While there is no guarantee of success, we should be gratified that we have a candidate who is running such a terrific campaign!

Trump's effort to cram voter suppression bill through Congress fails

Trump ordered Speaker Mike Johnson to make a futile attempt to pass a continuing resolution for the budget that included the GOP voter-suppression bill that would require proof of citizenship to register as a voter. (Note that our nation has survived for 235 years without requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote.) The bill was doomed to fail—and Mike Johnson knew it. But Trump ordered him to jump and Johnson’s only question was, “How high, sir?”

To be clear, Trump wants to force the US into a financial crisis for political advantage. He said on Truth Social,

If Republicans don’t get the SAVE Act, and every ounce of it, they should not agree to a Continuing Resolution in any way, shape, or form.

But extremists in the GOP caucus know that Mike Johnson will cave. Per Marjorie Taylor Greene, “Johnson is leading a fake fight that he has no intention of actually fighting.”

Americans deserve better than a House GOP caucus willing to hold the budget hostage for Donald Trump.

Trump's desperation is showing

Trump is promising tax cuts like a man who can smell defeat. On Wednesday, he promised New Yorkers that he would remove caps on federal deductions for state and local taxes (SALT). Trump's position is absurd because he proposed and obtained the SALT caps as a way of punishing taxpayers in New York, New Jersey, and California (among other states). Now that he senses that he might lose, he is telling voters in those states that he will remove the caps he instituted.

Members of Congress immediately trashed the idea. Although capping the SALT deduction was unfair to taxpayers in states that fund their operations and pay into the federal coffers, reversing the policy would add $1.2 trillion dollars to the deficit. Trump's flip-flop is a sign of his willingness to promise anything to anyone to be re-elected. Trump's desperation is a more reliable sign of the state of the race than the polls!

Wall Street Journal debunks JD Vance immigrant / cat story

The Wall Street Journal published an article on Wednesday that reported (a) the city manager of Springfield told JD Vance that there was no evidence to support the cat-eating immigrant story before JD Vance doubled-down on the false claim on social media, and (b) the woman who filed a police report claiming her cat had been taken by Haitians later found her cat hiding in the basement of her house.

Per the WSJ,

[Vance] asked point-blank, ‘Are the rumors true of pets being taken and eaten?’” recalled [Springfield City Manager] Heck. “I told him no. There was no verifiable evidence or reports to show this was true. I told them these claims were baseless.” By then, Vance had already posted about the rumors to his 1.9 million followers on X. Yet he kept the post up, and repeated an even more insistent version of the claim the next morning.

The WSJ article takes a deep dive into the situation in Springfield and is well worth your time to read the entire article. The WSJ reporters lay out in detail how Vance and Trump are exploiting an immigrant population that is helping Springfield to grow and prosper after decades of decline:

The local economy boomed. Business owners said they were grateful to have workers eager to work long shifts and do what it took to meet production goals. New subdivisions sprung up in the cornfields outside town. New restaurants opened. The Haitian flag flew at City Hall.

Growth came with growing pains. The number of non-native English speakers in the public schools quadrupled to more than 1,000 children. The local clinic and hospital were overwhelmed with people fleeing a country where healthcare had been scant. Traffic increased, as did frustration with drivers more accustomed with the chaotic streets of Port-au-Prince than the orderly grid of Springfield.

One thing is clear: Vance and Trump know the rumors have no basis in fact but continue to promote them—thereby hurting the people of Springfield. Trump claims he will visit Springfield—over the objections of the mayor and the Governor of Ohio (both Trump-supporting Republicans!). The fact that Republicans in Ohio understand the cynical dishonesty of Trump's propaganda is a good sign

The Nordic model sounds fantastic. In my country, whenever these hotels are raided, the women themselves are arrested, humiliated, brutalized by the police and then their "owner" comes to bail them out and they get even more in debt. there are some downfalls to the nordic model but its still better than liberalisation. for example, landlords who rent out to prostitutes can be charged with enabling prostitution and fined, that should not happen unless the landlord was extorting the women like brothel owners do (monthly rent vs. exorbitant daily fee for a room).

personally i think prostitutes should even have more rights than workers; for example. prostitution is legal in germany but i still „worked“ illegally because i wasnt registered. i could have paid the fine but it would have been very bad to have a criminal charge on my record, and for less privileged women than myself this would ruin them. and having this fear on top of the fear of the sex buyers makes it even worse. so i think whether a prostitute is in the country legally or „illegally“, whether she is registered or not, whether she is paying taxes or not, no prostitute should ever get charged or arrested, at most they should get a minimal fine.

in any case, instead of paying taxes - since taking a percentage of the income is basically pimping - prostitutes should have a small annual fee. and that should be all there is to it, no registration, nothing, if you are a prostitute you make a cash payment to some sort of local bureau and get a personalised receipt you can show whenever there is a control. if you dont have the receipt you have to get one and show it and then youre good.

i could go on and on there are so many ideas thats why i consider liberalisation advocates extremely lazy. both full criminalisation and full legalisation are lazy and „easy“ fixes for a complex problem that needs to be tackled from all sides, the demand side, the „supply“ side, immigration law, support for single mothers, drug addicted, mentally ill and disabled people, criminal law, housing, benefits, care work, it literally is interconnected with so many other social inequalities there is not one simple solution, sadly.

HISTORY

the celtigars originated as a clan of valyrian sea raiders. they eventually amassed enough wealth and stolen treasures to be considered of some prominence in valyria, but were still looked down upon by the elite for their raiding, their common blood, and their lack of dragons. the celtigars never followed the dragonrider practice of blood purity. a strain of celtigars eventually left valyria to establish an outpost on claw isle off the coast of westeros. they took some of their family treasures with them, including a valyrian axe heirloom. this move inadvertedly led them to survive the doom of valyria. the celtigars eventually adopted the crab as their sigil for the animal so prominent in claw isle. they raided and pillaged crackclaw point until they could claim to rule the point and needed to only send tax collectors on their behalf to secure tribute. the celtigars also raided further up and down the westeros coast and sent larger vessels across to essos to steal or to trade. yet they were always cautious not to come into conflict with their dragonriding neighbors, the targaryens on dragonstone. house celtigar would retain some kinship ties to the targaryens and velaryons based on their shared ancestry, maintaining an alliance and some degree of intermarriage, but they were still looked down upon by the targaryens and would come into occasional conflict with the velaryons over prowling the same waters. over time, the celtigars became less and less interested in piracy and more content to stay on their island with their wealth and comfort. they built a castle grand enough to house their fabulous treasures. they lent their support to aegon and his sisters in their conquest of westeros, but the subjugation of the seven kingdoms further contributed to a decrease in raiding as crackclaw point was freed of pledging fealty to anyone but the crown and the celtigars did not wish to be seen as attacking the lands of their new king. the celtigars were intially considered to still be of high status in westeros with some members holding positions of high status at court in the reigns of aegon i and maegor i. yet the now reigning targaryens were largely uninterested in intermarriage and once again, the celtigars became increasingly island-bound. after all, why risk destruction through violence or political schemes, when they could remain on claw isle with more than enough wealth to sustain them for generations? by the time of the dance of dragons, the celtigars are still a rich, noble family with some ties to the targaryens and velaryons, but they are considered to have minor influence due to lack of political involvement and lack of warrior status. they still finance trade expeditions as a source of income but few celtigars voyage themselves.

the head of house celtigar, lord bartimos celtigar, declares for rhaenyra and serves on her black council and later as master of coin. his high taxes prove wildly unpopular and he is killed by a mob in king's landing. he is suceeded by his son, clement celtigar.

CERYS CELTIGAR

cerys is bartimos' neice, the daughter of his younger brother. she is the first celtigar dragonrider. she is frustrated by the lack of ambition from the current generation of celtigars and feels her family should maintain greater prominence in westeros. arthor celtigar, who died defending bartimos celtigar in the king's landing attack, is her cousin.

lord ardrian celtigar, known as the red crab, is the head of house celtigar. he is an old man considered to be rich but sour. he first swore allegiance to stannis baratheon, but was captured in the battle of blackwater and bent the knee to joffrey baratheon. there is also a celtigar recruit of the night's watch.

house celtigar came to westeros before the doom of valyria, and they were landowners in the valyrian freehold. had tenants, serfs essentially sworn to them and were known to be severely harsh with their collection of taxes and owed rent. with their income, they were able to essentially pay people off, but also pay people to turn a blind eye.

they grew increasingly unhappy with the hierarchy in valyria, knowing they would never be dragonriders, and decided to move across the narrow sea some years after the targaryens with an ambitiously driven mindset.

when they crossed, they settled on cracklaw point, and were some of the first to bend the knee to aegon. however, house celtigar had a tense relationship with the people of cracklaw point: those who commented on them being lesser than other valayrian houses often went missing, houses raided, etc. essentially, it was like a terror state.)

house celtigar is incredibly wealthy, and has a general idea of keeping their wealth to themselves; historically they have been masters of coin to targaryen kings, but they are seen as something of a double-edged sword. the reality is, house celtigar obtained their riches through continuing the practice of slavery in westeros, long after leaving the valayrian freehold.

their wealth is rumoured, but their castle of cracklaw point is furnished ornately and has clear signs of money - blood money. whilst the targaryens continued to practice the first night, house celtigar buried their secrets deep within the caverns beneath their family keep. the celtigar catacombs are a disturbing sight. if one were to go digging, they would find remains of those who gave everything for the name celtigar. this practice has since dwindled, however maximus celtigar has continued to rule over cracklaw point with fear.
