Contextualising John Whiteman’s Letter in a Contemporary Setting

 

In December 2013, I embarked on a journey with ACME, a London-based architectural practice known for its innovative approach to contemporary architecture, urban planning, interior design, and product design. Joining ACME, established in 2007, marked a significant step in my professional development as both an architect and a document controller. The firm's commitment to collaborative working, flat hierarchies, and fostering a vibrant, egalitarian office environment resonated deeply with my own ideals. ACME’s approach allowed for a sense of ownership, entitlement, and responsibility, aligning with my ongoing pursuit of architectural excellence.

 

Reflecting on John Whiteman’s letter from July 6, 1988, while at ACME, I find myself navigating the intersection of architectural practice and intellectual inquiry, much like Whiteman did in his time. Whiteman’s role as the Director of the Chicago Institute for Architecture and Urbanism was marked by his dedication to setting up the Institute's activities and cultivating future architectural fellows. Although I wasn’t offered a fellowship at the time, I have pursued my path, building a career that embodies the principles of discipline, innovation, and critical thought.

 

Working at ACME, I see myself following the logic of a foundation, not unlike the one Whiteman laid out, but within the context of a contemporary architectural practice. My role at ACME has allowed me to contribute to projects that are both profitable and sustainable, while also being deeply rooted in the collaborative and egalitarian ethos that Whiteman might have appreciated. My discipline, honed over the years, is now leading me towards becoming an educational example within the field, demonstrating how architectural practice can intersect with critical theory and intellectual rigour.

 

As I continue to navigate this journey, I remain mindful of the tensions between corporate architecture and the subversive expressions of architectural thought that figures like Whiteman and Kipnis have championed. My work at ACME, much like my previous experiences, represents a commitment to maintaining integrity and creativity within an industry that often struggles with these ideals. Through this, I aim to create a legacy that not only honours the teachings of those who came before me but also sets a precedent for future generations of architects and thinkers.
