Refueling at Europa
So this is a short sci-fi story i wrote 2 to 3 years ago. I'm still learning, so please give me whatever constructive criticism you can.
I'll also be posting a few more of my stories while I'm currently working on that one lesbian bug alien romance story I posted about before.
Synopsis: A Blackbox from a group of Voyagers’ is recovered after their starship is found destroyed. It reveals that refueling off of the water from Jupiter’s moon Europa may not be the best idea.
“AY-005 to command.” the terminal crackled and the image of Lt. Pallin faded into view through the static. “One moment Pallin. Gotta clean up your image.” I replied into the microphone as I twisted the dials that lined the terminal. Slowly Lt. Pallin’s face became more clear and her voice lost some of the accompanying grain. “Alright go ahead.” I was eager to hear her report, usually being on night shift I rarely get any first hand contact. It's all told to me by the previous shifts or in emailed memorandums, this was a welcome surprise. “Right,” Lt. Pallin began “We found the black box that belonged to AX-004.” My heart leaped in my chest. This was astounding news, AX-004 had been destroyed a few months ago, and we only found out thanks to some routine telescopic searching. “That's fantastic news, Pallin. Send it in.” The loud clicking of my key-board nearly drowned out my instructions as I prepared the terminal to receive the blackbox’s contents. “Copy.” she replied and moved just off screen. I went and made myself a fresh pot of coffee as the data was being transferred, my shoes sticking and making awful squelches as I walked. They really need to clean this place. 
I made my way back and sat down with a new mug of coffee steaming, the pot set next to me. The terminal’s processor revved and the fan spun, working hard to complete the download. Finally the green bar with a ninety-nine percent hovering over finally filled and presented “DOWNLOAD COMPLETE” and Lt. Pallin’s face returned. “I’ll review this right away. Thanks Lieutenant. Be careful.” I praised, and I readied myself for a long night. Her chuckle was distorted as the feed gained more interference. Before she cut out I heard her say “All G— will con— need to refuel. Planning— Europa’s ocean.” Then she was gone. Honestly, I was surprised her communication had lasted as long as it did. These terminals may have been the latest and greatest in light-year communication, but even they have their limits. I queued up the file, only an audio log accompanied by descriptive text of the ship's onboard computer system. Sadly the AX series of ships were just old enough to not be equipped with cameras but were equipped with auditory receptors allowing the crew to use voice commands. That way they needn’t travel to a ship terminal just to adjust the temperature or run diagnostics. I grabbed myself a snack from my desk, my notepad, and settled in.

(Capt. Love): Computer, what’s happening?
(SCS): Request not recognized.
(Capt. Love): God dammit. Computer run diagnostic.
(SCS): One moment. Diagnostic report: Engines- fine, shields-fine, landing gear- fine, life support- fine, Fuel - Low, Fuel Reserve - Error
(Capt. Love): So it's a fuel problem. Alright, damn. Computer, scan for possible fuel sources, enough to complete the mission.
(SCS): One moment.
<SCS> Scanning…
(SCS): Large source of H2O found. 325 miles from current position. Location: Europa.
(Capt. Love): Huh, okay. Computer wake crew. 
(SCS): One moment.
<SCS> Waking crew…
(Cpl. Benings): Awww, come on. What now?
(Pvt. Dell): What's going on? Are we here? 
(Dr. Ve): Well that was a nice nap.
(SCS): Captain, crew have been awakened.
(Capt. Love): All hands to the bridge. 
(Cpl. Bennings) What’s going on Captain?
(Capt. Love): Low on fuel and the reserve is malfunctioning. I found us a good refueling point, at least enough to finish the mission. Europa.
(Cpl. Bennings): Alright so we just fly down and grab some water, easy. I’ll go check out the reverve, see what's up. Though why’d you wake up these two?
(Pvt. Dell): Yeah I was gonna ask the same thing. I'm no engineer.
(Capt. Love): Good experience for you Dell and I figured the Doc wouldn't want to miss landing on a moon made of ocean.
(Dr. Ve.): Thank you.
(Capt. Love): Computer chart course for Europa
(SCS): One moment.
<SCS> Charting course. Ideal landing zone found. Engaging Autopilot. Engaging engines…  
<SCS> 01:20 Deploying landing gear. Intciating landing…

(Dr. Ve): Oh right. Sorry.

Google finally managed to make Android phones and tablets communicate and cooperate like Apple and Samsung devices after a long period. Cross-device services, which had been leaked for years, were announced in May, and just began operating for me a few days ago.
This cross device integration includes hotspot and calls. The concept is that your two phones may share an immediate hotspot or video chat without setup or passwords if they’re in the same Google account. The immediate hotspot won’t work with Samsung smartphones, but this should work with all Android phones, unlike Apple’s and Samsung’s solutions.
In my experience, Google’s Android-wide cross device implementation is quick and flawless.
Android Cross Device Services
Why cross-device integration important
In order to utilize the internet on a Wi-Fi-only Android tablet or other Android phone while out and about, you must first turn on the hotspot on your primary phone, then switch to the tablet. Before connecting, you must manually choose the tablet hotspot network and input the password the first time. hardly tedious, but hardly smooth, is it? Not when smart devices should communicate this knowledge behind the scenes. To prevent wasting your batteries, you must manually switch it off after use.
What if you could tether to a hotspot without touching or unlocking your primary phone?
Another obstacle is switching from a phone video conversation to a tablet or other bigger device. You must disconnect and rejoin the call or terminate and resume it on the other device. Nothing sensible or obvious about it.
Cross device connectivity enables neighboring phones and tablets talk in the background. Without touching or unlocking the primary phone or tablet, you may cast a video call or create a hotspot. Neat, huh?
Turning on cross-device services
Enable cross device services on all Android devices to benefit from this new integration (see screenshots for step-by-step instructions).
Google > Settings > All services > Cross device services
Install cross device services by tapping Next.
Tap Ok to combine devices under one Google account.
Then you’ll find cross-device service options like call casting and Internet sharing. Enable both if you want both functions, or disable one. You can also view all the account groups your device is part of (if you have numerous Google accounts on your phone like Mine do), all the devices in each group, and modify the name of your device in these groups.
Basically, done. To group your phones and tablets, repeat that on each. After that, cross device will appear automatically as required.
Joining a cross-device instant hotspot
Two techniques exist for your secondary phone or tablet to join an instant hotspot from your primary device. The first is an automated notice that appears when it unlock my offline phone near my connected phone.
The notice simply asks whether you’d like to utilize my primary phone’s hotspot, and pressing Connect connects me instantly (first three screenshots below). You may manually scan the Wi-Fi networks and find your primary phone as an optional network at the top with a phone symbol if you don’t receive the automated notice, which is unusual for me. Tapping starts the immediate hotspot procedure.
Cast video calls to a second phone or tablet
The second feature of cross device services is the ability to transfer video calls across devices, such as your phone and tablet. To transmit a Google Meet video chat to other devices, hit the Cast symbol on the top right. A pop-up will invite you to do so. That list shows your neighboring devices, which you may choose.
After that, Meet opens immediately, launches the video call, and asks you to confirm the transfer. Select Switch to finish. You’re taking the call on your second device while your primary one displays a switchover alert.

Procedural Grass Generation in Ghost of Tsushima

The system searches for the nearest nine points on a grid, and then the nearest two points of this bunch are used as a guide for the clump. A clump's guide point can control both the height of grass blades and their direction, attracting them to each other or making them pull away. A second compute shader then runs when the first one is done, to transfer the calculated blade count, which represents the total number of grass blades to be rendered within the tile. This step gives instructions for the graphics processing unit (GPU) on how to render the grass blades efficiently.

In Ghost of Tsushima, there are two versions of grass blades to be rendered: low Level of Detail (LOD) blades with 7 vertices, and high LOD blades with 15 vertices. Each vertex has a 0 to 1 value describing its position on the length of the blade and whether it's situated on the left or right side. To transition between both LODs smoothly, the high LOD gradually blends into the low LOD as the camera view approaches it to prevent the new vertex shader from abruptly popping up.

Although the grass blades have two LODs, the landscape tiles themselves also have two LODs that need to be changed depending on the player's distance. Low LOD tiles are twice the size of high LOD tiles, but since both have the same number of grass blades each, 3 out of 4 grass blades of a high LOD tile switch to their low LOD version first before the entire tile is replaced by its low LOD version. This is also to ensure that the transition is seamless when moving away from the rendered tile. One thing that I found absolutely genius is how when a grass blade is short enough, the number of vertices is reduced to create another grass blade next to it, regardless of LOD level. For instance, if a short grass blade has 15 vertices in its high LOD form, 8 vertices may be used to create the initial grass blade and 7 others to create a second grass blade. This helps make areas of low-height grass look denser, thus giving them a more natural look.

Each grass blade's shape is defined by a cubic bezier curve, and control points within the curve allow precise manipulation of the blade's shape, facilitating animation and enabling a big set of grass shapes. To establish the position of control points, one parameter dictates the tip's position relative to the base, influenced by the facing direction of the curve. The midpoint's placement is determined by another parameter; a value of 0 aligns it with the base-to-tip line, while positive values elevate it away from this line. Once control points are defined, determining the world space position of each vertex can be done by using a zero to one value to denote the blade's position along the curve. The facing direction guides the generation of a normal orthogonal to it (perpendicular segment), which helps determine vertex positions along the blade's width. Tapering towards the tip is achieved by scaling the distance based on the blade's width and position along the curve. Finally, vertex normals are computed by finding the derivative of the Bezier curve at each vertex position and crossing it with the previously determined normal, in this manner, creating a render of the face of a blade.
