Dune: Part Two

Dune: Part Two - Denis Villeneve
We pick up right where part one ended. The story starts with Paul and Jessica Atreides trying to be accepted by the Fremen. The stories run parallel but take very different paths. Paul is trying to get them to accept him by learning their ways and joining their fighting efforts against the Harkonnen.Jessica is trying to dominate them through fear and coercion. In her defense, she has little choice when she is offered the job of reverend mother. It's either that or die. So not a choice. But what she does after that is vastly different from Paul's approach to the Fremen. We also see two other stories playing out. The first is Feyd taking over as govener of Dune and trying to subdue the Fremen. The second is the Emporer and the Princess trying to deal with the fallout of the eradicating House Atreides. Both stories are interesting and give us different intrigues into the political system in the galaxy.

Through Feyd we see the Bene Gesserit looking to use him as another option for the chosen one. Easier to control.

We also see his uncle, Baron Harkonnen, explaining their positioning to take down the emperor. Through the scenes with the emperor and the princess, we see two very different ways of looking at the turmoil unfolding around the House Atreides massacre. She feels much more pragmatic about the whole affair. Interested in what has happened to Paul and what all of this could mean. As soon as she sees that the emperor has lost she sides with Paul. Paul's story amongst the Fremen is much more linear than his mother's. We see him rising through the ranks of fighters as more and more people accept him. It's not only accepting him, they are beginning to believe.
Jessica's story is much more insidious as she takes up the propaganda role of the Bene Gesserit. She uses fear to turn the Fremen into believers of Paul as Muad'dib.

Chani can see the manipulation and faith as control and wants no part in it. This causes a huge rift between her and Paul. Paul starts this way but shifts when he sees that there is no further course of action. He begins to have visions of the horror he will cause if he takes up the mantel. This is such an amazing story to see unfold. Paul can see himself becoming the villain but feels that there is no other option available to him. And this is exactly what happens at the end of the film as he launches the holly war across the galaxy. The use of Stilgar as a mentor figure and the face of the fundamentalists gives us a way to identify with them that we wouldn't have been able to otherwise.

The visuals continued to be spectacular. Some standouts for me were the wells in the desert. The Harkonen world was great as well.

Almost sepia with burning black and white. It has been a long time since I've seen colour used in such a great way. There is one further creepy part of the film. Paul and his mum can talk to his unborn sister and it is very off-putting.The film is very long but there is nothing that can be cut. It is all vital. Great stuff and I highly recommend watching it. Ellen sighed and nodded at that decision, the Sangheili seemed resolute on his decisions, so there was no use trying to force what was his wishes. Though the feelings of helplessness and absolute despondency quickly took over at that, as the threat of her falling into that pit of self loathing loomed once more. Her lack of aid, her inability to help or her lack of actively providing the assistance he and his people sorely needed…. It ate at her, as did the thousands of other civilizations whose fall from grace could so easily be prevented with her stepping in. just a single message conveyed, just an ounce more power, just a fix of a terrible miscommunication, just anything….
The ranger went quiet for the longest while, deep in thought as she parsed through all of these possibilities. Before he addressed her again, leading to the woman finally garnering enough courage to stare back at the alien whom she was probably dooming to his utter demise. But as he spoke, as she heard those words that had a meaning and a purpose behind them.... she couldn't help but to feel partially empowered. There was a sense of finality, yet at the same time a sense of sincerity and forthrightness about his statements.
It all bore the truth, with nothing coloring it. Ellen had indeed done something, not much, but at least she'd done something to impact one life. And perhaps that was what her first steps should be, perhaps.... in due time, she could convince the rest of the directorate to move from their isolationism to something more proactive. But regardless of what the future held, the woman reacted instinctively to the latter of kesan's statements. His obvious salute, one of the perhaps few things they had in common, a military heritage as she returned the gesture in full, almost automatically and instinctively.
The ranger placed her hands and arms firmly by her side before returning with a half bow. Her people's version of a military salute. "It was my honor." She stated simply, letting that emotion sink in.... for the longest while aa he mind continued to wrap its head around the extraneous circumstances of this entire situation.
There was a slight pause, an abnormally short one before Vai responded promptly to kesan’s query, the ai’s tone concise and to the point. “Affirmative, I will open a communications array immediately, please wait whilst I run through the algorithms.”
The room was silent once more, before kesan presented his idea to Ellen. It was, something that had been on her mind as well, but her ranger protocol prevented her from providing such valuable technology into foreign alien hands. But was it really something that mattered now? She'd broken almost every standard convention, was probably going to be put through extensive auditing either way… and she could potentially tune it to his biometrics and hardwire it to self destruct if taken by anyone else but the sangheili…. she looked at the alien again, her emotions had decided that was the proper course of action, but her mind? There was still that glimmer of fear. What if kesan decided to exploit this tech for his own people, for their technological edge…..
“Yes, we have QEC.” She responded first as she sighed, doubting her own decisions as she began tinkering with a device beside her. “And yes, I agree with that idea. We can keep in touch despite the distances involved. I'll just need to make a few modifications here to have it work without ranger authorization.” she paused before quickly adding, her tone indicative of how much of a leap of faith she was committing to and how she jumped from personal to formal work related matters, almost as if trying to find another reason to maintain contact, justifying this with herself despite the obvious simple desire of wishing to remain connected. “Likewise I request that if any developments on this flood are made, any and all intel, I ask you forward it to me. It's threats such as this that threaten everyone regardless of species or creed…. and updates on your progress too of course.” The ranger spoke resolutely as Vai spoke up again promptly, a holographic projection of the varying ships in the system available for contact lit up.
“Please indicate which vessel I should patch us through, once done you should be able to communicate instantly.”

A Tale of Two Galaxies
intergalacticadventures:
The Ranger snickered at that strange sense of humor, at first almost having frozen up out of legitimate fear that his qualms were being presented forthright. Thankfully, that simply wasn’t the case as she gave a small exhale of relief and a dose of her own awkwardly timed sense of humor. “Well, I’ll have to bill you for the damages caused then! Going to have to take a good bit of verbal chewing out from Command when they see just how far gone the ship is.” She glanced to one of the monitors. “Exotic plasma weapons took out a good chunk of a few decks. Radiation probably cut a good decade from my lifespan.”
As the topic shifted to a grimmer prospect, the Ranger soon settled back into that sense of wary concern as she glanced away from her newfound ally. It wasn’t right…. To be leaving him to the whims of this insanely hostile galaxy. It was just…. There had to be another way, a third option as many would call it. It was always there, she just couldn’t see it….
It was in this session of deep thoughts when Kesan placed a four fingered hand on her shoulder. She tensed up immediately, it was rare enough as it is, to have someone touching part of your bare skin. But to have an alien do that? Unheard of. That strange, thick, almost leathery like skin felt entirely…. Well, for lack of a better term, alien, on her softer, smoother complexion. The lines in between said skin were also clearly indented from a casual touch.
“I know that’s what my mission was-er, is. But. It’s just. I. I’ve watched so many civilizations fall, I’ve watched so many cataclysms whilst I just sat back behind a screen doing nothing. I knew that the numbers I was crunching were in the millions, billions, and yet I did nothing. I. It’s. It’s tiring, trying to be so impartial, so entirely indifferent to emotional feedback when you know the numbers you’re crunching are actual lives….” She began to breath heavily, interspersed between shallow breaths as evidence of a wariness, perhaps even an inkling of condensation, began to overtake her eyes when her grey orbs met his.
“I. I’m so sorry for being so cold.” She said almost out of the blue, either that was an open apology to all those she could’ve saved, or to Kesan himself was unclear.
As the pause dawned upon them, and as Kesan provided a sort of open ended promise as to them meeting again, Ellen could only sigh and nod, her arms crossed in front of her abdomen. “Perhaps that will happen.” The Ranger, the Directorate soldier and scientist spoke in that postulative tone. “And indeed it is, but part of me still hopes that through whatever plans Verma has, perhaps this line of destiny will be forgiving and lenient.” She added, the first hints of any religious affiliation making its way into conversation. Be it just a name used in passive conversation or true faith wasn’t clear.
Ellen soon nodded at the Sangheili’s request, turning to one of the medbay’s cameras as if to nod at the omnipresent Vai for confirmation. The pair had strange, almost organic like visual and physical cues at this point, a strange display for most species without such an integral relation between organic and synthetic. “Affirmative, I have the coordinates within the ship’s database. A compensated jump is well within possibility, now factoring in the Ring’s gravity well, we should prevent a repeat of the deleterious and rather humiliating crash that instigated this incident in the first place.” The AI spoke through the ship’s PA system, Ellen nodding promptly, with a soft, forced smile. “Thank you VAI.”
“Shall I initiate inter-jump coordinate recalibrations?” The AI quickly added, prompting Ellen to turn to Kesan once more, her eyes full of worry and concern as she took a good ten seconds before nodding. “Do it.”
And with that, the ship seemed to almost ‘lurch’ in place, a deep feeling of unease reverberating throughout, as their technology showed yet another facet of how fine tuned their FTL capabilities really were… able to calibrate and shift coordinates in mid jump.
“Are you sure about this-, er, are you sure there isn’t anything you’ll need?” The Ranger seemed almost insistent. “I know technology isn’t on the list but….” She sighed. “Do your people use currency? We rangers have physical rare metals in case of emergency bartering, if you’d like, I know no one will miss a few bars of whatever metals you’d need.” She shrugged, almost grasping at straws at this point.
(@k-dradom)
Kesan was relieved when the jump was possible, and he wanted to breathe a sigh of relief. However, it was cut short when Ellen began speaking again. Her words earlier had earned a bit of a sympathetic look, but he’d said nothing. This time, when she offered metal or currency, he chuckled warmly. “No, I don’t believe I’ll need anything like that. I appreciate the offer, though.” He replied, turning to face her fully. It was strange, not even a day ago, he would have killed her on sight simply because she resembled a human and now… his entire world as he knew it was flipped upside down and thrown into chaos.
“I have a long time of battle before me, but even so, I will never forget that you aided me when it would have been easier to let me die. In my eyes, you are an ally to the Sangheili.” He let those words hang in the air for a moment before his right hand came up, balling into a fist and it was thumped against his chest while his head bowed to her. His people’s version of a salute.
It would only be a few moments before they’d be back in the fray again. He let the stance fall before looking up to address VAI. “VAI, are you capable of contacting foreign ships’ communication arrays? I will have to identify the correct ship and message them to let them know that you are not hostile. I would rather not be fired upon by my own people…” He trailed off, glancing to Ellen briefly. “I will have to call in for a pickup, so they will need a way to dock a ship to yours. Hopefully things will have calmed down by now, enough so that they can spare a phantom to pick me up…”
He paused, his people’s version of a frown claiming his features. This really was going to be it, wasn’t it… He’d step off her ship and probably never see her again. Clicking thoughtfully, he folded his arms and tilted his head a bit. “Actually… maybe this doesn’t have to be it. You said you mastered FTL communication before you mastered actual travel, right? Perhaps there is a way for us to keep in touch..? If I cannot go with you, then perhaps we can keep each other updated on events while you are recovering.”
It was a sound idea. It was very likely that his people were going to ally with the Humans, and while he resented that a little, he knew that neither species were going to survive the war if they didn’t team up. It was, in the end, going to be inevitable. And it was just the smartest thing to do.

An Unexpected Anomaly
There wasn’t much to say about this mission. Yet another run through the local cluster through to what was hopefully a neighboring cluster in yet another display of brash foolishness by the Ranger pair. And indeed, they were now a pair. At least, that’s how both sides of the coin considered one another. With Ellen at the command and VAI and the helm it had always been a balance of power between man and machine. Except now it would seem as if the challenge, the actual fight for control had died down ages ago, if not generations or centuries ago. There were bigger fish to fry as it were, and simply resorting to internal conflict to solve squabbles would get them nowhere…. Their neighbors were enough of an indication of this. Regardless, what was clear was their current course and trajectory, as Ellen narrowed her eyes, furrowed her brows, adjusted her glasses just to confirm what she was currently reading on her data-pad. “Can’t believe we’re actually doing this…. Away from the local cluster huh.” She murmured to herself, as she made her way out of the briefing room and onto the tarmac as it were, towards what would be her home and only means of conveyance home for the next few months. She breathed in deeply, taking a good look at her current surroundings, before entering the craft. A certain sense of trepidation present in her visage but nothing that she couldn’t handle…. She was a scout, a ranger, there was nothing beyond her. No sight set too high and no location too far. She would head there, explore, and come back, as she always did. Persevere, ad infinitum. The ship itself was a rather standard affair, 250 meters in length and 5 decks within the actual main bulk of the dagger-like structure. With a small superstructure built off of the back of the vessel, almost as if someone had placed an observation tower precariously atop of the ship. This added an extra 4 decks quite easily. The size of the thing would be comparable to frigates and destroyers typical of any navy, however, given that this was indeed an exploratory craft, the weapons systems and offensive countermeasures were far less abundant, in lieu of scientific and sensor equipment. Not to mention the hefty QEC-LR amongst the two other already intense FTL capable drives packed onto this vessel…. The Ranger entered the craft from the aft cargo platform, and proceeded towards the cockpit of the craft, where she sat and began the final few checks before finally leaving the confines of this station, and towards what was unkonwn space. “Lieutenant Commander Ellen Caldwell, SN-225-25-98-177RN, Mission 21 SN-14-29r.” the woman spoke with a rather professional air as the craft responded to her promptly by powering up.
She breathed in deeply. “QEC Sublight, nominal.” She clicked a few keys. “QEC, ping test…. Passed.” She paused. “Wormhole generator is…. Functioning. Diagnostics are currently nominal.” She paused yet again before turning to her invisible partner. “VAI, everything alright on your end?” “Affirmative, we are in the green Lieutenant Commander.” VAI replied, having adopted some of her partner’s lingo during their rather lengthy time together. With a brief smile, Ellen continued typing away, generating what essentially was a massive rip through space that soon enveloped the relatively small craft…. Then, nothing. Her existence within this galaxy was all but gone. The reentry however…. was a different story altogether as sensors blared at the anomalous readings before finally ejecting the pair prematurely out of the wormhole, the distinct rip through space occurring right above Earth in the form of a brilliant flash of light followed by what could only be described as a massive rip in the very fabric of space itself, a rip that expanded in all 3 dimensional space that spanned a good few kilometers…. it was eerie to look at if one even had the opportunity to, as as soon as it had formed it simply dissipated due to background radiation. The ship itself was on a direct trajectory for earth now, its systems currently incapable of rapidly assessing the descent and its engines almost certainly damaged from having maintained such an anomalous opening in space through to another universe…. Endeavor would be but a ball of brilliant red flames, lapping up against the brilliant blue shielding of the ship’s defensive systems. As it broke through several sonic barriers before finally making its doomed approach towards the vast desert area that had thankfully been its projected crash landing area. The impact was loud, and the ship itself skirted for a few kilometers, kicking up sand and dirt, carving a straight line into the earth as it finally skidded to a halt, the exterior hull was surprisingly unscathed thanks to the shielding, but the same couldn't be said for all components of the craft…. the ship smoked, from what it wasn't clear, but what was clear was that for all intents and purposes, ellen’s journey had taken a rather serious detour….

A Tale of Two Galaxies
( @k-dradom hope i’m doing this right!)
There was a certain sense of trepidation and dread as Ellen read over the details of this galaxy, or rather, this particular quadrant of the greater galaxy they’d detected from the inter-space quantum transmitters. As with any mission, months, years of preparation had been poured into the analysis and data interpolation within the department.
From the very basics, ascertaining the viability of the physical natures of the entanglement wormholes themselves, to advanced extrapolation of anomalies and possible correlation between certain factors and its possible involvement with civilizations advanced enough, or at least, worth noting as a threat to the greater incorporated states, not to mention the galaxy in general.
Of course, only so much could be done in the labs and reviewal boards. Only so much that could be garnered from staring at statistical data and debating how far one could go with correlation and causation. As with any good directorate lead by the men of science, hypotheses and theories had to be justified by cold, hard facts. Evidence to counter or confirm what was proposed as threats or viable opportunities. To find threats, to ensure the safety and security, and ultimately, the continued survival and progress of the Incorporated States.
The men at the top had all the time to debate the ethical and moral ramifications of sending humans into such perilous circumstances, the Directors and Doctors alike. But they knew what had to be done, they knew that ultimately, the overreliance on automation would’ve lead to the death of the program as it almost had to their burgeoning military.
In worlds populated by an increasingly contented and fearful populace, it was rare to have someone voluntarily answer to the call to arms. But it did happen, and it just so happened that Ellen was one such woman.
Original specifications called for a two-man team, but with limited manpower they had little choice but to limit that to high-profile and hostile missions. The ‘Lieutenant Commander’, was an officer of none. Save for the security and utility robots that lined the halls of her relatively tiny craft.
“D2732-G1-Q3-S2910-P4. Quite a mouthful.” She murmured to herself, as she made her way out of the briefing room and onto the tarmac as it were, towards what would be her home and only means of conveyance home for the next few months. “VAI, you got everything the Administrator mentioned?”
“Affirmative, mission notes, and relevant information has been saved onto the ship’s local databanks. Mission related materials, equipment, and supplies are all packed up and ready to go.”
“Personal effects?”
“Loaded, in your quarters as per usual Lieutenant Commander.”
“Good.” She stood there, right outside of the craft. “Bigger from the outside. Let’s just hope we don't’ get too cramped in there, I don’t want a repeat of the Dujan storms.”
“Affirmative.”
Stepping onto the landing ramp she took one last look at the base, at his home. There was a part of her that understood the ramifications of this mission. This could be the last time she ever gazed upon her homeworld, or perhaps it could be yet another routine drift through space. Only time would tell.
The stations surrounding the main station, from the constant flow of cargo and resources that fed into an insatiable industry, to the supply lines that fed into the massive defense networks that they’d built up over the decades. It was certainly a sight to behold, ships of varying sizes, from the humble frigate, to the massive dreadnaughts, to the stations themselves which were upwards of tens of kilometers in diameter.
Her craft felt small and insignificant in comparison, but such was its necessity. It didn’t take long before she made her final approach, towards the massive array of satellite-like objects arranged in a ring. Each satellite lit up in a dull red color, one after another, before a brilliant beam of light enveloped it’s center. The tiny craft moved into position, and with one swoop, entered the light….
One would imagine the actual travel to be somewhat life changing, but in reality, it felt barely any different than standard gate travel. Instantaneous and without much effect on the craft or its occupants.
This time however, it was clear something had gone wrong, severely wrong. Whether it was the coordinates or some error on the calculations’ parts it wasn’t clear. But the tiny vessel was now on a collision course with the planet. The cockpit suddenly lit up in a brilliant display of warning lights, automatic warning systems repeated its blaring alarms and dull monotone notifications. There was barely any time to even look at the ‘planet’ from afar, as she approached the surface at a blisteringly fast speed, on approach to what seemed to be a relatively forested area, on one of the major continents.
Not that she had time to focus on anything but the collision itself however…. As the panic and fear had managed to worm their way through to the usually calm and composed woman. Beads of sweat barely had time to form however as the altimeter glowed red, and the craft began automatic reentry procedures after realizing that exiting atmosphere in this phase, was a useless effort.
Any observer from the ground would see this stunning display of colors, mostly a deep red and orange, but with flickers of blue. The shields of the ship attempting to mitigate damage to the hull. The boom of the craft breaking through the sound barrier would be heard soon after the craft was spotted, and anyone close enough near the crash site itself, would’ve heard the ear-shattering screech of the craft before the massive thudding explosion of the impact itself.
Any observers from space would’ve seen a massive ‘rip’ in space before this tiny craft zoomed out of it and onto the ring below.
It’d drawn a line, hundreds of meters down across the forest floor, clearing out a huge swath of trees and the like. The craft looked mostly intact, but was smoldering, the engines flickering.
This was a massive spatial anomaly that could be detected with ease. A wormhole opening instead of this galaxy’s usual means of FTL travel, slipstream travel. Both the crash on this sacred ring, and the presence of this completely alien means of travel were of anomalous and ultimately bewildering circumstances.
