Manifesto : Process of finding Identity

The topic of this CTS class is 'Manifesto.' Despite having formed my values and habits through various experiences, I found it challenging to articulate my own manifesto, especially in response to the overarching question, 'What attitude should a designer adopt in their design?' Therefore, our group's manifesto written in class has fewer general answers than fits me.

However, each individual brings diverse social and cultural backgrounds, and designers express their attitudes and beliefs uniquely through their design styles, shaped by these experiences. Thus, I aim to create my own manifesto based on our group's manifesto but tailored more closely to my personal values and design inclinations.

Before defining my manifesto, I questioned what values a manifesto could embody. Past designers didn't settle for their era's status quo; rather, they objectively observed their times and prioritized values. They crafted manifestos with specific guidelines for action.

Furthermore, manifestos evolved from written statements to symbolic imagery, spreading rapidly through exhibitions or websites, enabling mutual communication where those who embraced it could empathize and express opinions. Therefore, when creating designs infused with my values and experiences, defining my manifesto could strengthen their appeal by ensuring consistent and meaningful designs.

In reality, many designers adhere to specific methods or practice their own identity during the creation process. Dutch graphic designer Irma Boom, who has designed over 300 books, perceives books as structures. Before producing any book in its actual size, she creates a miniature version to confirm the book's structure.

She also created both a miniature version and an XXL version of 'Irma Boom: The Architecture of the Book,' which collected her designed books, seamlessly extending her working method into objets d'art. Through this, I learned that practicing a manifesto is both a process and a method of creating artwork.

Hence, the theme of my manifesto is 'Joyful Design.' Particularly in today's era sparked by network technology, it's easy to access various designs, like personal portfolios, through sites like Pinterest and Behance. Consequently, there's a tendency for a similar appearance without a distinctive style. Therefore, in my designs, I aim to convey novelty and attractiveness that I can thoroughly enjoy from within.

In practice, I implemented this into creating brochures in the studio module. 

Typically, books list text by typing on a keyboard. However, merely introducing variations, such as different styles of handwriting and PVC paper, provides visual delight and communicates novelty.

Ultimately, to define my manifesto, I must first understand myself well. However, most of the time, it is hard to grasp what identity I have without thinking deeply about it. Therefore, the CTS B module provides an opportunity to reflect on myself and aids in the growth of a designer.

I can't get over how some W.I.T.C.H. characters just cease to exist as the story goes on.

Endarno becomes a member of the Triumvirat, probably one of the most important people in the universe, but a few chapters later, it's back to Himerish being the sole ruler of Kandrakar and we don't ever even see Endarno again.

Tibor just sort of stops showing up only to reappear in the very final page of the series which makes no sense chronologically anyway.

Eric moves out and tries really hard to stay relevant, but after a while, boom, Hay Lin is apparently single now and dreaming of having a boyfriend. She only casually mentions Eric as her ex MANY chapters later.

Stephen and his gang have been exposed to be able to secretly control the whole city from the underground, yet they are completely evaporated from mankind's records and memories (including Irma's crush on Stephen) soon after their arc ends.

I could probably list more if I thought a bit longer about it.

So, in “A Portrait of a Lady” you get the sense that Walburga and Irma’s relationship is fraught/estranged likely because Irma had so many expectations on her to have a boy and(for her) and having a girl on the first try instead would be seen as almost a personal failure on Irma’ part. If Walburga ended up having a daughter before Sirius and Regulus- do you think she would have harbored those same feelings of failure/resentment towards her hypothetical daughter that Irma may have had about her?

I feel like any daughter of Walburga’s would probably have a strained relationship with her in some ways(mainly because she would be a part of a very patriarchal family), but I think it would be even more so if this daughter was born first, because both O and W would be feeling the pressure of producing an heir-especially if we assume that it still took her 4 years to get pregnant in the first place.

I wrote Walburga's and Sirius's birth scenes as parallels and to show generational trauma.

I wrote Irma's disappointment before revealing the baby's sex.

The distant tinkle of the servant’s bell punctuated the brief silence that had fallen over the room. 

Irma Black closed her eyes, the bitter salt of her tears mixing with the taste of the sweat which had once held the promise of an heir. 

The baby’s whimpering pierced the stillness, provoking an aching in her breasts and sinking in her stomach.

A girl.

Whereas Sirius's birth scene, opens with the repetition of his sex and then Walburga's triumph:

A boy. 

A healthy, strong boy. 

After 10 hours of labour, she had triumphed. Every drop of blood spilt, compensated ten-fold by the production of an heir. 

She could hear the celebration taking place in the drawing room below her. The boom of her father-in-law’s voice mixed with her father’s and husband’s, broken only by the baby’s cries. 

Sirius.

Orion’s heir. 

Also the idea of both Irma and Walburga ignoring their bodies and maternal instincts thread through both scenes:

The baby’s whimpering pierced the stillness, provoking an aching in her breasts and sinking in her stomach.

Walburga’s newly heavy breasts ached to nurse him, and she fought the urge to respond to the cries which had begun to metamorphose into a siren call, pulling at all her senses. 

So yes, I do think Walburga and Orion wouldn't have reacted well to having a daughter as a firstborn. I think it would have been viewed as a disappointment. I also see Walburga as the ultimate boy mum, and the girl would always be made to feel inferior to her brothers (like Regulus but worse)

Hello New Readers!

Sunday, August 27th, 1995

Our lovely little town's newspaper has added a new member to the paper's staff, and we're all glad to have Nicole on board! We're sure that Nicole's writing and expert reporting about our town, its history, and things going on within it will attract dozens of new readers to our home, so we've had her write a small introduction to our town for everyone!

Hemlock Hollow is a small town of roughly 4,000 people, located about 30 miles east of Mount Rainier in Washington state. Our home was founded in 1911 by Frederick Wolfe, a wealthy railroad baron who saw an opportunity in the timber industry, and he funded a small fork off of the main tracks to be made here for easy access to shipping logs as well as transportation for the workers. As the logging industry in the area began drying up during and after the '50s housing boom, the town turned to apple farming and tourism based around its time as part of the rail network. Today, our tourism board is working with developers, state transportation officials, and others to regain the rail network and build a hotel in an effort to revitalize the town. Exciting news!

Some notable locations are Hemlock High, the public school in town, and home to the Hemlock Hawks. The other is St. Bernadette's Hallowed Academy, a religious private school. For the urban explorers and historians, there is also an old sawmill outside of town where logs were processed, as well as the old mansion of the first mayor's house on the river. One of my favorite places in town is our adorable little museum dedicated to the town's history (especially its early days as part of the rail network and logging industry)! For our residents in need of extra care, we also have an assisted living facility that is home to about 70 patients, and I've been told the staff is very kind. They host weekly Bridge Nights from 7-9 on Saturdays, and admission is free for all to join! We also have many shops and buildings like Irma's Needlework, The Divine Diner, Grant Foods, and the public library. Of course, there are also the apple orchards on the south side of town, owned and well-maintained by the Wolfe family for the last 3 generations.

That's about it for now, so we hope our readers enjoyed this little insight into our town. We're sure Nicole will do a great job with more about this cozy place we call home!

April and Irma

I'm still sad that Irma wasn't in rottmnt.

She could have easily played the straight man character to contrast everyone else's high energy goofiness.

Picture this:

Irma, a homeschooled teen who works as a secretary for channel 6 news, a total workaholic, who needs to touch some grass and loosen up a bit and is in desperate need of some friends. So her parents decided to enroll her in public school so she can make friends.

(She could have done so if she wanted, but very much CHOOSE not to, so her parents basically threw her into the deep end of the metaphorical social pool so she could learn to swim.)

April, as awesome as she is, desperately wants some normalcy in her not so normal life. Meets the new girl who knows nothing about April and April sees this as an opportunity with a blank slate. BOOM! Friendship achievement unlocked.

Idk. I feel like they'd balance out each well, Irma can help April be a bit more grounded and April can help Irma loosen up a bit and have fun.

I'd like to think that Irma's first reaction to the turtles is just a reference to the first TMNT movie where April passes out, wakes up and thinks she's dreaming.

After awhile, when the shock wears off she'd just become more curious and a bunch of questions. I think she'd get along with them just fine, but their high energy would wear out her social battery very quickly and she'd probably just visit the lair rarely.

With her work ing at channel 6 she could probably help setup an interview for April to work there.

“Becky, Please. I’m begging.” Alfred, her older brother looked down at her, frowning at the top of the stairs shocked and uncomfortable. If another man told her to calm down, she might just explode. They are not being married of to her tart of a cousin, to keep the bloodline pure, (like it’s not the purest family in the Wizarding world.)

She’s shaking all over, feeling her chest rise up and down aggressively as tears streamed down her face. Does her brother know nothing? Nothing at all? She was always convinced he hated the family as much as her, but standing there, her family watching like shes holding someone at wand-point.

“You’re begging?” She smiles wildly, “YOU’RE BEGGING?” She watched as her younger brother flinched at her booming voice.

“Walburga. You do not raise your voice at your older brother, or anyone that matter. You must accept this, you were born for it,” Irma, her mother spoke up with disgust. “I don’t want to marry him!! He’s horrible, mother, HORRIBLE.” She cried, stepping back as she clawed slightly at her aching throat from all the yelling. She felt faint. A headache as horrible as Orion was pounding in her head.

“You have no other option. It’s this or your nothing. Nothing to us or to anything. You are going to have an engagement party, your going to look pretty, your going to smile, and you BETTER not whine because if you say anything sarcastic, passive aggressive, or disrespectful I will pelt you across this house. DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME? DO YOU?! ANSWER ME, WALBURGA.”

“Are you kidding me?! Where do you think I learnt all this shit from!!” She cried, “Yes!! I understand, I UNDERSTAND.” She screamed, holding the sides of her head aggressively, sobbing more as she slid down the wall behind her. Married to a rich pure-blood man was always going to be her fate. Foolishly, she never thought that the rich man would be her troll of a cousin, Orion Black. She hated him to bits, getting a bone chilling shiver every time she was near him. She wanted to cry, and never stop, but her parents were right, she had to accept it, or she was nothing.

Walburga knew this was her mother once, and her grandmothers. She feared the day that the cycle would repeat the most. Happily leaving her wedding day at second place.
