Whew. I'm not gonna lie to y'all, this took forever. My goal with this was to recreate my previous Caryl compilation with 1.) all scenes intact, not missing anything and 2.) much better quality. I ran into many issues that I won't bore you with, but in summary - almost everything here is completely lossless from the original files, aside from S10, which I unfortunately had to reencode to fix a few issues I could not solve no matter how much I fiddled with it. However, it is still much better quality than the previous file I had up! These also have 6CH audio, which means that if you make fan videos and use something like Vegas Pro, you will be able to isolate the spoken audio from the music/random background noises and have better, cleaner voiceovers!

All of the seasons add up to about 123 GB, so I'm sorry that these will take up quite a bit more space than before, but the improved quality hopefully makes up for that! These are not perfect, so please forgive any little framerate bugs or very slight (hopefully) issues with video/audio syncing. I'm aware that the audio for S10 is a bit behind, but hopefully not to an extent that ruins anything - that season gave me quite a hard time, and I'm not really sure how to get it just right. It bothers the hell out of me, so I'm sorry, but I did my best. Otherwise, any issues should be pretty minor, but let me know if you run into anything major.

Pikes Summer Check-Up 2024 Edition

Started to go “hm I still have to unlearn the don’t speak unless spoken to mindset that I have” but remembered I could do a checkup post instead!

Current life updates:

Right now I’m saving up for conventions happening this August, though plushie collecting & Steam summer sales miiiight have interfered. Whoops. (…and I wonder if I should get back to my FE Cipher card collection). My next big-ish trip is visiting my middle school best friend with another high school friend. I’m also hoping for my next big trip this year to be Boston in late September to meet with a friend. After that, it should be a trip with my middle school best friend to a farm, something Halloween related with IRL friends depending on what they want to do, no clue for November, and seeing relatives for New Year’s.

Gonna see if I can reorganize my closet since everything in my room got reassembled when we got new flooring. Feels cluttered as a result. Hopefully my back won’t kill me.

What I’m watching:

Current schedule for watching anime is as follows:

Mondays - Digimon rewatch along with Spice & Wolf 2024. I really like Lawrence and Holo’s banter. For Digimon I just got to where Mimi obtains her Crest. Man adult me really just became Joe, huh.

Tuesdays are filler at the moment since I need to wait for Pokemon Horizons to update on Nettingtonflix (I watch the dub) and I finished Kakuriyo. Part 2 of Kakuriyo was…eh, I guess? I noticed stiff animation a lot and I didn’t really get the sense of drama/urgency that I was expecting. Might throw in some more Digimon episodes until Horizons updates. (I’m liking it so far, though it’s not something I’d shout to the heavens about)

Wednesdays - Baccano finally. I might need to rewatch some parts because they retell events from different perspectives, but I see repeats and get confused if I already watched the episode or not because of that.

Thursdays - Moribito. I’ve heard this show was good, though I think I need to rewatch this one as well since I miss important info when something dramatic’s not happening. The curse of having a show as background noise during your lunch break at work.

Fridays - Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure rewatch. Friends were talking about watching it so it got me interested in rewatching once more. I’m still on Phantom Blood but I’m excited for the rewatch until I hit Stardust Crusaders. Unfortunately it’s not my favorite part and it’s the longest.

Saturdays - My Hero Academia and Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin. I’m gonna see if I end up liking Sakuna more as an anime or as a game. As for Hero Academia, I’m really liking how this current season’s hyping up the finale. And with the manga ending next month, I kind of hope Vigilantes can be animated

Sundays - Tower of God season 2 and My Deer Friend Nokotan. Nokotan kind of reminds me of Lucky Star, but I’m hoping the shitposts aren’t just making fun Koshitan. Tower of God season 2 looks pretty promising. Though I lament that God of High School had to rush everything into 1 season.

I’m getting hyped for TYBW part 3 subconsciously and also hope the light novels get covered.

In terms of stuff on Youtube, it’s mostly let’s plays for games that I want to see if I want to play them myself. I appreciate that SMT 5 Vengeance fleshed out certain characters more, but damn. I also finished watching the ProZD Plays Ace Attorney 2. Franziska is wonderful, I wish she was in a different game. I liked case 2 the most in spite of Hotti’s mere existence.

What I’m Playing:

Stopped TTYD in the middle of chapter 6 since I didn’t want to deal with the turning platform section. So now it’s back to 428 Shibuya Scramble. I’m in the 3 PM section of the game now and things are getting spicy. So far my rankings of the routes are Tama > Minorikawa > Osawa/Achi > Kano.

I also have quite a few fighting games in my Steam library now! I still only button mash, but I’ve been playing with some folks in the Granblue community and my friend Merlin. My “don’t speak unless spoken to” mindset unfortunately kicks in when it comes to inviting people to play games, though. Like granted people are busy and I don’t want to bother them but aaaaaaa (so if you wanna play with me on Steam I’m free most weekends. Though my wrist may fatigue itself too. F)

I’m also contemplating if I want to have various small fics in a collection or add alternate endings in my main Bleach fic

While trying to come up with a list of favorite/best shows seen in 2023, I realized that this year there hasn't been anything that truly impressed me. Some of them were good, others mediocre and some shows that I started watching and then abandoned for whatever reason. Apart from the last season of Succession, nothing felt exciting enough that would make me impatient for the next episode. I couldn't even gather 10 shows for this list, but anyway, here it goes.

1. Succession

I do think that the last season wasn't as cohesive as the previous ones and sort of lost its direction in the second half, but it still was one of the best tv series of the year. If not for the entire season, at least for the Connor's Wedding episode, which was a masterclass in acting/directing.

2. Barry

It took me a while to get used to Barry and I wasn't really into it at the beginning, but it turned out that season 3 had one of the most interesting pieces of directing in tv and really got out of its way in terms of experimenting with the medium.

3. Rain Dogs

This is a little show, perhaps not very well known. If not for its plot, I think the acting was top notch, but it's something I usually find in a lot of British series.

4. Bad Sisters

I never thought I could hate Claes Bang's face (I really liked him in The Square), but my god, his character was a complete asshole, the worst of its kind. No wonder those sisters came up with 10+ ideas on how to kill him.

5. Jury Duty

I'm always down for a mockumentary and this one was a bit particular, as the main character wasn't aware of what was going on. But I think the project worked and it landed the reveal well. James Marsden was my favorite here.

6. Minx

I've mentioned Minx here before. I'm happy it was picked up by another network after HBO cancelled it. It may not have a big audience, but there's barely any promotion for it. Which is absurd because it's such a fun show about combining feminism with 70s erotica for women in a way that only that decade could have done.

7. Winning Time

Another show barely promoted and also cancelled by HBO after two seasons. I'm not really into sports movies/tv series, but when I'm hooked and the story is interesting enough, I'm all in. I didn't pay any attention to The Lakers before, but its fictional story set in the 80s? Bring it on.

8. Swarm

This is a must see for anyone who is part of a fandom. Yes, it's fiction and it shows a version of what extremism leads to, but I do think it points a mirror to today's understanding of what it means to be a fan. Of taking a really toxic mindset from the online world and applying it in real life. There's a lot of food for thought there.

What I Watched This Week – 1/21 – 1/27

Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill – When the nominations were announced for the r/anime awards, I had only seen one out of the eight nominations in the slice of life category: Skip and Loafer. I’ve since watched Onimai, and tried to watch Masterful Cat, so this makes three completed. It had a steep uphill climb for me, as one of the things that annoys me the most about modern isekai is the tiresome obsession with Japanese food, and this is an isekai centered around a man sent to another world and given the magical ability to order food from a Japanese online grocery. I just can’t get past the arrogance required to imagine that the Japanese equivalent of Little Debbie and Hormel would be so mind-blowingly delicious to alternate dimension beings that a monster strong enough to solo a dragon for funsies would make himself your servant. The adventure part of the story was entertaining (and it is an adventure story, I have no idea why this is in slice of life, but it’s hardly the only title that doesn’t belong here) and I liked the characters enough to plan to watch the sequel. The cooking part of the story, though, where he just drowns everything in name-brand sauces, doesn’t really do it for me. 6/10

Uma Musume: Pretty Derby Season 2 – For years people have talked up this particular season of the series as some kind of marvel, but I ended up liking it less than I did season one. Centered on Team Spica members Toukai Teiou and Mejiro McQueen, this season deals heavily with getting injured, rehabbing from injury, and attempting to make a comeback after time away, and I did not like how they handled it. Sports anime in general has a fairly unhealthy tendency to romanticize overtraining as evidence of a strong work ethic and dedication to a sport or team, and that was on display here as well, with multiple frustrating montages of horse girls overworking themselves and neglecting rest. Additionally, when recurring injury or more chronic conditions leads some of the characters to consider retirement, it’s labeled as “quitting” or “giving up”, and they’re pressured by the people around them, who make emotional pleas for them to continue racing. The total disregard for athletes’ well being was really frustrating. I still find the idol performance segments a little insulting to both women athletes, whose sports performance should be entertainment enough, and idols, whose efforts and talent should not be belittled by the suggestion that anyone can do it. It wasn’t a chore to sit through, despite all my complaints, but it was less fun than the previous season. 6/10

Uma Musume: Pretty Derby – Road to the Top – The only reason I started watching this series was to watch this particular entry, which was nominated by the r/anime jury for Anime of the Year. To its credit, it’s fairly different than the first two entries. It’s only four episodes long, it focuses on three racers not on Team Spica, and it’s a serious step up visually. I thought the color palette for seasons one and two was kind of oversaturated, whereas this series had a more sophisticated look to it. The animation was never bad in the series, but it was straight up good here, with lots of movement and fun distortions. I was pretty neutral on the series cast up to this point, with the exception of Team Spica’s Gold Ship, whom I adore, and this series added one more to the adore column, with the introduction of T.M. Opera O, who was fantastically overdramatic in everything she did. I liked that the story was more than girls professing to each other to be the fastest or promising to race each other, and that two of the three main characters got extensive backstories. There was a still a frustrating amount of overtraining, and those damned idol performances still exist, but this was easily the best entry in the series, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. 7/10

Tsurune S2 – In all my bellyaching about the AOTY nominations this year, I’ve mentioned Tsurune as one of the shows I wished got nominated, so I figured I should rewatch it to make sure it was as good as I remembered it being. It was. The production is just solid all around; the soundtrack, the sound design, the animation, the cinematography, and the art are all excellent. It manages the large cast incredibly well, giving all three teams the right amount of depth and backstory to lend the archery matches emotional stakes. The fight between the two cousins on the main team in episode five might be the best single episode from last year with how it perfectly captured the way only a very close friend can push your buttons before resolving it with a pitched battle that ends in a fit of the giggles. How this got left off the shortlist in favor of Road to the Top or basically anything else just mystifies me. 9/10

I am feeling extremely low right now, not even right now for the past few days actually. The last time I felt pure joy was when I was watching the previous few episodes of Ghost that got leaked. I wrote a review on it but saved it in drafts, it needs some work done honestly. I haven't felt that excited or happy in a long time and I just wonder why. I'm rewatching JoJo so I can understand it better, I'm always watching it and not paying attention, and then I'm about 50 episodes in and I don't know anyone's name, or what's even happening in the plot. I started from episode 3, as I've watched 1 and 2 so many times, and after that, everything becomes a blur. After Dio has the stone mask and kills Jonathan's dad my concentration just flutters away like a butterfly someplace else. Jonathan and his dad are such lovely and forgiving people, even after Dio stabbed his dad, George, he forgave Dio on his deathbed, only God and the writers know why because he doesn't even deserve it because he doesn't even care. Battle after battle Jonathan still forgives Dio and even grieves him, maybe because he does see him as his brother, but he killed your dad, what's the worth of forgiving him. Even in death, Dio doesn't want peace for you. Still to this day, I don't understand Dio's problem, they took you in after your dad died and you just want to do them dirty for what reason? If I also hear Hamon one more time I'm going to go crazy but at least that's done with after a few seasons. Anyway, today I had work around 11:30 and I don't know I how still managed to be late? I'm so awful and don't know how to fix this, I've always been at least 10 mins late to every single job, Hibagon, Well Being, even Cabana I was always there after the time I'm supposed to be, I don't know what's wrong with me or if I'm actually cursed with the late curse, even though I made that up. Even when I try to wake up early and do everything right something else happens to stop me. I remember during Jury Service I was always so late and the day I woke up extra early to be there on time, the bus was canceled and I had to get an Uber there which cost me so much and I never even got to get that money back. I even got scammed today but thankfully the bank gave me all my money back. I opened a Depop account to help out A, and some girl was interested in buying the glasses, I have no idea how to use Depop and stupidly gave her my details and she managed to scam me £400!!! I was sitting with A and he knew something was wrong, thankfully the bank saw it as something unusual and contacted me straight away, so I managed to report them, block my card and order a new one and get my money back. It was scary and so embarrassing I couldn't believe it. It's all dealt with and I managed to make a Paypal account that's connected to the Depop, just need to educate myself on online selling. I went to the gym after with Cake, it was a good session and we are trying our best to push each other, she has better resilience than me and I'm really proud of her progress. I just hope we can see more in the next few months, it's only been 1 month and the progress can properly be seen in about 6 months. So we need to keep pushing ourselves and go as much as possible. I'm planning to go to Oxford this weekend and spend some time with Boyn, literally got off the phone with her now and my tickets are all booked and I'm so excited to go!!!

10. Ryan

Ryan could very well be at the FTC, but he is not winning. The edit is making him a punching bag and is telling us it is ok to laugh at him a little. I find Ryan's oblivious nature endearing...he is such a sincere guy but that isn't going to snag him the win. I don't think anything could make me move Ryan up from last place in the rankings.

9. Owen

Owen's uptick of content only coinciding with him being the new Jeanine is not good. He's got this battle with James coming up, and while I think he's winning that fight it doesn't put him any higher in winner contention. Owen's a sitting duck getting his quick merge arc before he's in jury.

8. Noelle

Noelle's strategic mindset is never at the forefront of the episodes and while she's as much of an underdog as Owen, she's not been given much care with her edit. It really feels like production is just milking her story for as much content as it is worth before she inevitably plays her steal a vote and is eliminated. Feels like Noelle is more of a plot device than a plot point in the season.

7. Gabler

Lots of people hopping on the Gabler train are forgetting how awful his premerge content was. Gabler's maybe the last of the easy boots to go but it really does feel like he'll be going. Nothing last episode really changed things for me, and if he is truly gonna try to suck up to the seven-person alliance I think that's really bad for him.

6. James

James has to be bumped down because last episode was a bad look. Building up a narrative that James is the kingpin of a cocky seven-person squad is awful for him. Combined with the fact things are angled to have us rooting more for Cassidy in the little Coco feud we saw and Owen getting a ton of good content...very worried about James right now.

5. Karla

We are just too far into the season for a winner to not be getting more consistent strategy confessionals. Why is Karla constantly entertaining flips and backing out? Why is she always edited as wanting to go women-strong but then never does? We get no explanations as to why Karla makes the decisions she does. We see she's a great player, but there's no care put into showing Karla's thought process to make her more complex. I just think it is too late to put in a winner storyline for her, but I hope I'm wrong!

4. Cody

This is the first serious contender I got on my list now. I'm finally coming around a little to what others are saying regarding Cody as a contender. He had a great episode despite not needing to be the focus of things. He's a big part of the power structure in the tribe too. My issue is he's still outshined by Jesse and until that changes I'll always at least rank Jesse higher.

3. Cassidy

Having Cassidy in the third slot here is admittedly wishful thinking, but she is the only woman with a shot at winning this IMO. Cassidy didn't have a great episode- she's shown to be the only one against the Jeanine vote and she votes wrong despite likely being aware of how things were going at TC. That being said, we get an explanation behind her incorrect vote that we as viewers not only understand but are expected to support. I think little things like these keep Cassidy clinging on edgically as being a contender.

2. Sami

If Sami isn't the winner then he is production's favorite. He had a great episode despite totally and completely failing to flip the vote...and not only that but backing OUT of the flip and undermining his own mission. Yet Sami gets edited as making a strategic call and not as someone who failed, or as your typical petulant teen that doesn't get taken seriously. Further, as if to prove Sami's backdown on the Ryan vote was the correct call, the edit dunks on Jeanine HARD for no reason with the rare voting confessional played in-episode. Maybe next episode we will see things take a turn and we get some pouting about the failed flip, but Sami's one to watch.

Jesse

I don't think there's much I got to say. Until Jesse's edit shows ANY sign of slowing down he's got to remain the top contender for a slew of obvious reasons.

When did they start dating? After Emily's death in season 6

Where's the Maeve plotline? Switched out for a plot where Reader was abducted by Diane Turner who was jealous of the fact she was married to Spencer

When was each of the children born? Maddie was born eight months after Diane Turner abducted Reader in early season 8, so sometime around mid/late season 8. Bennett was born in early season 10 so he's a little bit older than Michael LaMontagne. Florence, early season 12 after Hotch leaves

What about the prison plotline? It still happens and there are lots of mentions of how important it is to this series. Although it's mentioned in the very first chapter, Maddie was 6, Bennett was 4 and Florence was 18 months when it happened.

How old are they in the current timeframe? Maddie is 7 and a half, Bennett is a few weeks off his 6th birthday and Florence is 3. The CM timeline by itself in the final seasons is very messy since in 15x08 Spencer mentions the season 14 finale takes place two weeks before the episode yet Kristy announced her pregnancy and by the end of the episode, she'd had her baby? However, here we're considering the season 14 finale/confession which is rather essential to the plot to have taken place 2 months before the first chapter. Other episodes that take place during this series are 15x09 which is a few weeks into the series and 15x10 which is, canonically and in this series, one month after the previous episode

New Girl & Stranger Things

IF somehow the Suffer Brothers are planning for s5 Byler, it would be with a New Girl parallel.

In season 6 of New Girl, we see Jess pining for Nick, who is dating Reagan. Nick and Reagan are terrible at communication and have a bumpy relationship. They do not express their concerns, thoughts, and feelings to each other, and Jess acts as the in-between. Jess gives both Nick and Reagan advice, selflessly helping them through relationship bumps, while hurting herself over and over by pushing the guy she loves towards another.

Eventually Jess decides to step aside and let Nick and Reagan figure out their own issues as she needs a break from the pain of being so involved in the relationship of the man she loves. Within the span of 3 episodes, Jess goes no-contact, Reagan and Nick realize the extent of how much Jess was saving their relationship, they are unable to communicate without her, and then break up because they can't do it on their own. Nick and Jess get together soon afterward and are endgame.

This is so similar to what we've seen from Mike, El, and Will, and in s3, Lucas. We see that Mike would not have taken any steps towards reconciling with El unless Lucas pushed him to it. In s4, we see Will pushing El to be honest with Mike and not lie to him anymore. We see Will talking Mike through why he might not be comfortable saying I love you and lifting Mike up after Mike shared insecurities through the lens of "El feels this way about you and this is why you shouldn't have doubts" while in reality Will was just expressing his own feelings. Finally, Will pushes Mike to save El when she's fighting Vecna. I do not think Mike would have had that monologue if Will hadn't pushed him to keep going and say more.

Conversely we see Mike and El going through all the motions of a relationship without doing the proper communicating that's needed for a healthy relationship. Mike and El don't talk about their insecurities and reassure each other. Mike still can't say I love you to El's face when she's looking at him.

Another parallel: Nick meets Reagan when Jess left to go on jury duty. This is exactly the same as Mike and El: Mike only met El because Will went missing.

In conclusion: there's a path here for it to still happen in s5. Will gets fed up and lets Mike and El figure out their own problems, maybe that's when Mike realizes that Will's painting wasn't expressing El's feelings at all, and they crumble without Will's help. Mike misses Will and we go from there.

However vol. 2 royally sucked and I don't know if I even want Byler to become canon at this point. But I just wanted to share this parallel I noticed!

Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2 General Thoughts/Review (SPOILERS)

Just got done watching! Still reeling from the final 2 episodes! Had a lot of thoughts I wanted to share. This is just my opinion, so don’t take offense if you see something you disagree with. Chances are things might change when I get more time to think about the overall season!

WARNING: Major Spoilers from Episodes 8 and 9 of Stranger Things Season 4

1.) I don’t know if it’s too early to call, but these last two episodes will probably be in my Top 10 Favorite Stranger Things Episodes if I ever decide to make that list. It was an emotional rollercoster, and my stomach was in knots over what was going to happen to these characters. These will be episodes I rewatch in the future.

2.) Yay for Joyce/Hopper reconnecting. That was long overdue!

3.) I’m hoping we get a little more explanation about the Russian’s involvement with the Upside Down. I’m guessing they must have gotten the demogorgons and demodogs from when they opened the gate in Hawkins in season 3, but there’s a lot here that needs clarification. Specifically, I want to know how they managed to trap a piece of the Mind Flayer in that room. I also want to know more about the Russian’s experiments on the Upside Down monsters, and what plans they have for next season.

4.) I feel awful for Will. This show has stopped being subtle about Will’s feelings for Mike, and it’s depressing that he hasn’t been able to tell Mike how he truly feels about him. It’s nice that Jonathan seems to be aware of Will’s feelings and what Will’s going through, and that he was able to give his little brother some brief comfort.

5.) As a gay man, I’m not completely willing to dismiss the Duffer Brothers yet when it comes to queer representation. At the same time though, it’s frustrating that the show refuses to have the characters verbally acknowledge Will being gay despite dropping unsubtle hints this season about his feelings for Mike. It’s also frustrating that we had Vicky get introduced briefly as a love interest for Robin, and yet there barely was any focus on it. I’ve seen accusations from some fans about the show queerbaiting them, which.....................the jury is still out for me on that. There are things that could have been handled better when it comes to LGBT+ representation, but that doesn’t mean I’m ready to completely dismiss the show. There’s still one more season to turn this around.

6.) Argyle’s become a favorite character. Love how he was able to identify the tire tracks that led to where El and Dr. Brenner were, as well as getting El the salt tub she needed. He’s a lot more perceptive than he looks. Here’s hoping we see more of him in season 5!

7.) Speaking of Dr. Brenner..............CALLED IT! I knew he was going to betray Owens and El. I didn’t buy for one second that he actually reformed and saw the error of his ways. For all of his talk about how he did everything for El, the truth is it was ALWAYS about him and his need for control (as Vecna put it). This man is arguably responsible for almost every shitty thing that’s happened on this show, and I am glad El finally had enough of his crap.

8.) What exactly happened to Dr. Owens? Is he in Colonel Sullivan’s custody? Did Sullivan kill him? And where is Sullivan? I’m guessing he’s still hunting El, but I’d have to imagine he knows about the “earthquake” in Hawkins and the gate between Hawkins and the Upside Down. We’ll probably see him again next season, and I am not looking forward to it.

9.) Love the callback to Max’s Michael Meyers costume from season 2, and how Eddie used her mask to cover himself. Lol! 😂

10.) I was never a fan of Jason to begin with, but that scene with him and Nancy at the gun store is where any shred of sympathy I had left for him evaporated. The fact he was okay implying to Nancy that he was planning to hunt down Mike was vile. He looked like he was relishing that, which was disgusting. I’m glad Nancy stood her ground.

11.) I like the way Brenner’s death was handled. You can tell El was sad in spite of how awful of a person he was. At the same time, I was glad she refused to grant him any absolution or forgiveness before he died, even he was begging her to “understand.” She did not owe him that.

12.) The ending where they play “Separate Ways” by Journey as the group prepared to put their plan to kill Vecna into motion was a beautifully haunting moment.

13.) It was nice seeing Lucas and Erica bond as siblings where they weren’t just throwing snarky remarks at each other. Yay for Erica showing up for most of Lucas’s games because she wanted to support her brother! Here’s hoping we get more sibling moments like this in season 5!

14.) Loved seeing the bonding the group did prior to the battle: Dustin and Eddie fooling around, Robin and Steve talking with one another, Nancy and Max working together. Moments like these make me love this show!

15.) Eddie playing guitar in the Upside Down was as badass as the trailers made it out to be!

16.) Steve having 6 kids while traveling around the United States in a trailer is something I want to see happen now! :) Potential Spin-off!

17.) Speaking of Steve, Nancy, and Jonathan.......................Look: I’ve tried to be as open-minded about this as I can, but I am not enthusiastic about the Duffer Brothers creating another love triangle between these three. I didn’t like it in the first two seasons, and I’m not liking it any better here. I don’t have an issue with Steve finding true love if that’s the direction they’re going with his character, but I have zero interest in seeing Steve get back together with Nancy. I wish they would stop pushing this. I’m also not thrilled about the writers chipping away at the Jancy relationship. I was pretty ticked at Jonathan lying to Nancy about his acceptance letter, and the lack of resolution over where their relationship currently stands. I get they didn’t have enough time to focus on that given everything else going on, but still..............

18.) Max sorting through her trauma and her complicated feelings about Billy has been one of the best storylines this season. There was a hard truth in her admittance that she wished for Billy to die and felt guilty about it. And no, I don’t think she’s an awful person because of that. There are sadly many real-life examples of abuse victims who have also felt that way about their abusers, who probably felt relieved when their abuser were no longer a part of their life and then felt guilty for feeling that way. I am grateful this show didn’t shy away from that: They didn’t try to pretend Billy and Max’s relationship was ever okay, or that Billy secretly had a heart of gold when it came to Max. They were very clear that he was ABUSIVE to her, and that the way he treated Max messed her up in a huge way.

19.) This is probably going to be a controversial opinion, but I was satisfied with the ending they gave Jason’s character. I was glad they didn’t pull the last-minute “redemption” for him, nor made any attempt to whitewash his behavior. Regardless of his reasons for doing what he did, or whether or not he knew the full truth of what was going on, the fact is he put innocent people in danger because of his actions. He was prepared to kill Lucas, even when Lucas was trying to explain to him what was happening. He was someone who was coasting on his own self-righteousness and refused to consider the possibility he might be wrong in his assumptions. People can complain all they want about how Jason would have been a “Nice Guy” if things didn’t go the way they had, but the truth is the current circumstances brought out Jason’s uglier qualities and revealed the kind of person he was: Self-Absorbed, Vindictive, Prejudicial, Irrational, and Self Righteous. His establishing character moment was that speech at the prep rally in the season 4 premiere where he took all the deaths that happened at the hands of the Mind Flayer (an event Jason knew nothing of the context behind) and made it all about him and how they needed to win the basketball game. Doesn’t get any more self-absorbed than that. I see his character as a deconstruction of the “Vigilante Hero:” Someone who takes the law into their own hands because they’re convinced of the purity of their cause, and doesn’t give a damn about the collateral damage they leave behind. In a day and age where we have people who behave like this (and have gotten others killed through their stupidity and arrogance), it’s refreshing to see Stranger Things call this mentality out.

20.) Lucas beating the crap out of Jason will go down as one of my favorite moments in season 4. Same thing with Erica kicking Andy in the balls after he threatened to break her arm.

21.) What is it gonna take to finish Vecna off? Steve and Robin burn him alive while Nancy shoots him, and it still doesn’t kill him? They should have used the axe to chop his head off.

22.) Eddie’s death hit hard. I had a sick feeling he was gonna be slated for death, but what hurts the most is how he’s still being vilified by the town for murders he was innocent of. He went down fighting as a hero, and I’m hoping Dustin manages to get his name cleared at some point in season 5. He deserves that.

23.) I'm hoping we see Enzo again soon. I loved his friendship with Hopper. Don’t care that much for Yuri though.

24.) Hopper chopping off the head of a Demogorgon is also another favorite moment for me! :)

25.) Here’s to hoping that Vickie and Robin’s relationship gets more focus in season 5.

26.) I hope Max recovers soon! 😢 

27.) The ending was haunting. I’m assuming Henry/One/Vecna is assembling his army off-screen and plans to invade in season 5. Now that the gate is wide-open, and the Upside Down is pouring into Hawkins, chances are the life expectancy in that town is about to plummet. I don’t blame most of the residents for packing their bags and leaving ASAP.

28.) I’m hoping we get more of an explanation about Vecna first got his powers. I still theorize that there was some kind of hidden gate between the Creel house and the Upside Down, and that some other malevolent force connected with Henry as a kid via the spiders or the grandfather clock and gave him the psychic powers he now has. Also, the show needs to explain more about the Upside Down. Time froze there the day Will disappeared, even though it’s speculated that the Upside Down has existed for over thousands of years. Here’s hoping season 5 provides the answers!

29.) I’m sorry Lucas, but if someone was in a coma, I would NOT be reading them a Stephen King book!

Overall, I enjoyed this season. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a fun ride, and it gave me a lot to chew on. I’ll be back for a rewatch, and will come back to edit this if I have anymore thoughts.

May I ask what is your favorite Leverage episode for each season? And do you have an overall favorite episode?

Man, I am so glad you asked by season because I was going to have to do that anyway -- there's no way I'd be able to choose just one or two. Also, I'm most confident in my S1 picks, because I'm only at the beginning of S2 with my rewatch (blame The Librarians for that), so these opinions are subject to change as I see what hits me this time around. Also, as I was mulling over my answers, I realized that a lot of my favourite moments aren't necessarily in my favourite episodes, because a lot of what makes an episode excellent for me is how it all fits together. 

But also: Hoo boy, strap in, because that is a question with a five-part answer and I am *constitutionally incapable* of keeping things brief. 

SEASON 1 

I'm going to cheat a little here and choose the two-parter of The First David Job and The Second David Job because I feel that they operate as a unit.

 While I love both The 12 Step Job and The Juror #6 Job for what they show us of Parker's character (Parker is the best, forever, and I will not budge on that), I don't love the Nate and Sophie dynamic in 12 step, and Juror #6 is packed with fun moments but a bit less compelling overall. 

(Also, I will admit, I'm a bit annoyed at how much of an ass Nate is about not letting Parker get out of jury duty because he thinks she needs to learn a lesson, and how dismissive he is at first when she's picking up on weirdness at the trial. I suspect there's a certain amount of (mostly) unconscious payback for making him look bad in comparison during the rehab con, and he's damn lucky that Parker doesn't quite pick up on it because she likes them all enough by that point that it really would have hurt her feelings and set her back, trust-wise. And as I'm sure I've said before, I judge all characters first and foremost on how they act toward Parker, so Nate? Not so cool here.) 

Anyway, that's a lot of talking about why not the others and not a lot about why those two, but mostly it comes down to the fact that, when I rewatched those episodes the other day, two things became clear. One, the pacing is excellent. The episodes really sweep you up and don't let go. When I'm rewatching something and I know where the plot is going, I can find myself unconsciously reaching for my phone if there's not enough else going on in a scene for my brain to really dig into, and that never happened during the David jobs. Secondly, those episodes are where it really felt like the show properly hit its stride -- like all the pieces are finally in place and the characters have smoothed off enough of each other's rough edges so that they're not catching on each other so much. They still annoy the heck out of each other sometimes, and they mess up, but the core sense of the team is there -- which is why Eliot holds the grudge against Sophie (because he'd finally let himself believe in them as a team), and why he's ready to forgive once it's clear she's (ineptly) trying to make amends with everyone. 

Plus, you know, these episodes have Maggie AND Sterling. What's not to love? 

(Also, the moment Parker realizes how they're going to get off that rooftop? The giant smile on her face as she runs toward Sophie's wide-open arms? That is a level of acceptance and love that Parker has been searching for her entire life, and I will always be grateful to Sophie for doing that.) 

SEASON 2 

It's hardest for me to pick a season 2 episode, mostly because it's been the longest since I've watched most of that season. Just going with my gut, I'm partial to The Fairy Godparents Job because it has a ton of little things I really enjoyed: 

Parker sitting in on the initial client briefing and making the whole thing awkward 

Her eating her cereal during the briefing, perched on the arm of Eliot's chair 

Eliot and Parker being chaotic gremlins during the briefing: 

Nate: Now, there are three general exceptions for house arrest. There's personal safety, death of a relative, and family events. 

Eliot: Personal safety. We could burn the apartment down. 

Parker: [Raising her hand like "pick me! pick me!"] Ooh! Ooh! 

Eliot: [In a tone of "This could be arranged"] Or death of a relative... 

Coach Eliot (once he hit his stride -- he was terrible in the first scene with the fencing; WTF Eliot you NEVER pair the bully up with the bullied) 

Nate having a lot of fun trolling entitled parents as the over-the-top school principal 

Parker sticks her head in the air duct during the apartment viewing and Hardison just rolls with it 

FBI guys! I love me some FBI guys.

Hardison having to play Parker's role when he breaks into the mark's apartment 

Sophie having a real moment with someone, especially someone who's not Nate 

The whole idea of a science fair musical. Just, amazing. And Sophie choosing it because look, the displays are already made, I have two days, this is what you get. 

I think what really tied it all together for me, though, is that I really felt for Widmark, with his shitty stepdad, no friends, and terrible name. He seemed like a genuinely sweet kid, and I know Sophie had her own reasons but I really like that they actually gave him a win in the end, and that it seemed like his life was going to improve. I've worked with kids a fair amount in various jobs, and the little misfits like Widmark are always my favourites, so I was always going to have a soft spot for this episode for doing right by him. 

SEASON 3 

There are a lot of good episodes this season, but The Rashomon Job wins hands down for just how much it made me laugh, and how incredibly satisfying it was to watch and guess at what was actually going on the first time around, and see what I got right and what I didn't with each successive retelling. It invited me in to play with them, and I am an absolute sucker for a text that does that. 

There comes a point in a well-constructed show where they can have an episode entirely built around their own lore, that's basically all in-jokes, and have it be extremely satisfying for the viewer, and this is the one for Leverage. (The really impressive thing is that I suspect it would be a very fun episode to watch even if you'd never seen the show before.) 

And all of that fun is wrapped in glorious layers of team bickering, smug one-upmanship, and the realization that even before they knew each other they couldn't help playing off each other -- these people were always on a collision course that would end up with them either teaming up or killing each other in frustration. 

Apart from that, I have to day that I love this season in general for how the character-centric episodes are used to strengthen the broader relationship dynamics. In The Inside Job, we meet Archie and get more of Parker's history, which is used to show how much more protective Parker's new family is of her. The Scheherazade Job has the rest of the team stopping for a minute to appreciate that while it's fun to give Hardison a hard time, the man is actually obscenely talented, and then The Studio Job turns around and does the same for Eliot. The Gone Fishin' Job is a love letter to the Hardison-Eliot bickering odd couple, but it also has that moment when they fill Nate so full of frustration-worry-pride by not getting on their train because they have to go back and save the day -- because that's more important than either of them as individuals. And it all culminates in the team staring down these secrets surrounding The Italian and Damien Moreau that could have torn them apart -- would have done so, back in season 1 -- but they've built something strong enough by this point that they can give each other the benefit of the doubt. They can work through it. 

SEASON 4 

This one is hard, because it starts with The Long Way Down Job, which comes right out of the gate swinging with the OT3 moments and that scene between Eliot and Parker in the cave that has me near tears just thinking about it, and it doesn't really let up from there. 

Seriously, take a minute and look through the episode list for this season. There is not a single episode that doesn't have a dozen hilarious, memorable, meaningful scenes. 

I think I've gotta go with The Grave Danger Job, though. The bad guys in this episode weren't the most amazingly interesting, but they also weren't the point, so I think it was the right call to let them just be evil and move on with it. This whole episode was a showpiece for Aldis Hodge, and he knocks it out of the fucking park. He spends so much of this episode just stuck in a goddamn box and I can feel my heart racing just thinking about it. 

Add to that Parker, talking him through it, trying to keep calm for him even though it's HARD and this is hitting all her deepest fears about why you should never start caring about people. Parker, breaking as she tells him she needs him. 

Add to that Eliot diving into that grave to pull Hardison out, clutching him tight and burying his face in Hardison's neck in the least bro-y hug in the history of humanity... 

And Parker who can't hug Hardison right then and there, Hardison who lets her walk away because he knows she needs to and she was there for him when he needed her so he can absolutely give her this. The coda in the bar at night where Adis Hodge and Beth Riesgraf share four short lines total but still manage to convey dozens of complex and conflicting emotions that speak volumes about the state of their relationship, all in less than a minute of screen time. 

What I'm saying is, there are SO MANY FEELINGS, and it is SO GOOD.

SEASON 5 

I kind of want to say The Long Goodbye Job because it's Just. So. Satisfying. It's rare that a show ends so well. The drama of the fakeout, the way it subverts your expectations to the end, how perfectly it bookends so many things from the pilot, and in doing so how it highlights the personal progress each of these characters has made, the EMOTION of the scene in the back of the van, "'Til my dying day...", Sterling coming through for them... (My smug satisfaction when, in the background of the scene in the server room, I caught a split-second of blonde hair and thought "That looks like Parker" and I was right...) 

But I'll be honest, NOTHING will ever top the scene in The Rundown Job where they have to disarm the mine in the evil scientist's house. You know the one. 

It's the essence of their relationship given physical expression. If you had to come up with some sort of interpretive dance to depict the nature of the OT3, this would be it. They're all perfectly balanced, mutually supporting and protecting each other. Take any of them away and this move doesn't work. Eliot's the sturdy foundation, there to provide support wherever it's needed. Hardison needs his moment to freak out (fair), but then he's there, strong and steady and so in awe of these people he loves, prepared to give them whatever they need to accomplish whatever crazy thing they decide to do. And Parker defies gravity, defies expectations, reaches out to do the impossible because she's just that good and she knows her boys won't ever, ever drop her. But also, this is about the most unconventional way to disarm a mine you could possibly imagine. It is so ridiculously extra, and it works for them. I cannot think of a better visual metaphor for their relationship. 

Really, the entire Rundown Job is basically *flails in OT3.* I love it so much, and I love the creators for giving it to us. 

If I absolutely HAD to pick one favourite episode, it'd probably be either Rashomon or Rundown -- likely Rashomon because I'm such a sucker for that kind of cleverness -- but I'd have to rewatch them both to be sure. Thanks for the ask! I had a lot of fun thinking about this. It was probably way more than you wanted to read, but my forte is more "rambling on at length about the things I love" than "concise witticisms and knowing when to stop," so *shrug* this is what we get.

Kidnapping Oscar and Ruby

The thing about me is that I like to think. A lot. And ever since volume 6 ended, I’ve been thinking about Oscar and Ruby being kidnapped by Salem’s flying monkeys. I’m sure you’re familiar with this theory, so I’ll get straight to the point. I love this theory. And since one of the rosegarden week’s prompts is “kidnapped”, it’s a perfect opportunity to discuss my idea. I’m not going to focus specifically on Oscar and Ruby. More on how Salem would capture them.

Why would they get kidnapped?

We should remember that Salem is interested in Ruby. We don’t know exactly why, but it definitely has something to do with her Silver Eyes.

What’s the point of kidnapping Oscar? Imprisoning Ozma’s reincarnation would make achieving Salem’s goal easier. Shouldn’t she kill him then? No, that would be stupid. She’d basically let her biggest enemy escape (reincarnation) and it would be harder to find him this time. 

When would they get kidnapped?

If there’s one thing I expect from volume 8, it’s definitely more screen time for Oscar. I’ll admit, Oscar disappearing has become some sort of meme now. Still, he was never kidnapped. I think the best time for that sort of event would be the volume 8 finale or 2-3 episodes before that. We can only guess what will the next season be about. There’s also a possibility it would take place in volume 9 if the writers decide to “connect” Atlas and Vacuo arcs. However, I think the first option is more possible. During volume 7, I came up with a scenario where Ruby and Oscar manage to escape from their kidnappers and get their own mini-arc while trying to survive in Solitas. We would get to see things like their team attack, Oscar’s backstory, a proper character development and some cute (not romantic, too early for that) bonding scenes. This isn’t a post where I want to discuss this, but I may write more about it in the future.

How would it happen?

Oh boi, we could talk about this for hours! We don’t know if Hazel, Emerald and Mercury came to Atlas (they might be still in Salem’s castle or in Vacuo), we don’t know what Neo and Cinder plan to do with the Lamp, Tyrian is running free and Watts is still in prison. Basically, chaos. I assume all (or most) of them will meet with Salem at some point in volume 8. However, someone has to get the Staff, and they need the Winter Maiden to open the Vault. We also don’t know what Ironwood will do after finding out about Salem’s army. Again, I don’t want to discuss it in this post, so here’s what I think can happen: Salem announced her arrival in a very spectacular way. She’d mention her “talk” with Ironwood to the people of Atlas. Her army of Grimm would also make them think if fighting her is a good idea. It wouldn’t take long to kill everyone in both cities... However, as we all know, Salem is merciful. She didn’t come here to kill people. She only wants a few things: the Relics, the Winter Maiden (mainly her power), the Silver Eyed Warrior and Ozpin.

She gets what she wants, she leaves. No victims, no bloodshed, no destroyed cities. Wouldn’t Ironwood announced he “killed” Oscar? How would Salem know he’s still alive? In my opinion, Salem knows how powerful Ozpin (Ozma) is. He wouldn’t just let someone kill him like that. But could our heroes trust her? The jury is still out on this, but I think she’d be lying. She has to show other Kingdoms, especially Vacuo, what she’s capable of. She’d give Ironwood and citizens of Atlas some time to give her what she wants. If the time were up, and she didn't get what she had "politely asked for", she would have ordered the destruction of Atlas and Mantle. I’m not really sure what will happen in volume 8. Whitley and Willow, Winter, the Happy Huntresses, the Ace-Ops, other villains... Maybe Weiss will try to help her family? Maybe some of our heroes will decide to defend the relic and the rest will try to evacuate people from the Kingdom? What’s Oscar plan to save it? Will Atlas fall on Mantle? We still have to learn about Nora’s backstory... CRWBY has a lot to work with, and they have to play it well. Regardless of what happens, in my vision, our heroes, after reuniting with Oscar, would have to face Salem in the finale.

But would they fight her? I don’t think so. Maybe they’d try to use the Staff, but we still don’t know how it works and I’m not sure if they would bring it with them. They would try to convince Salem to spare the kingdom and leave with what she already has. Obviously, she would refuse. Ruby and Oscar, maybe one of them at first, would agree to be taken, much to other’s disapproval. But Salem would agree to that.

 I’m not sure what would happen later:

Salem would betray them and order her army to kill everyone in the kingdom. Our heroes would try to fight her, but in the end Salem would leave with Ruby and Oscar, leaving others in Atlas.

It would be our heroes plan. The rest would attack Salem’s associates and try to get back the Lamp. However, their opponents would still win.

Some Salem’s subordinates, probably Cinder or Tyrian, would attack the rest of our heroes. Ruby and Oscar would try to help, but they fail. Salem wins again.

I have a few more ideas, but they differ mainly in details. Most of them ends up with Ruby and Oscar getting captured. I think they would manage to escape and, as I mentioned before, I have a few ideas what would happen after that.

On the last episode, @rennyforpresident was sent packing in one of the most one-sided votes of the season (thanks a lot guys, love you too). This week, whoever is evicted won’t be going home; they’ll be spending the rest of their summer in the BB Jury House.

@iantxrry in the DR: “I’m literally the least threatening person here, but go off. I feel good going up against @maxdoesbb, but anything could happen. @maxdoesbb, all I know is you better watch out next week.”

After a somewhat calm nomination ceremony, the players for veto are chosen.

@theminionjcfucked chooses @fucklauryn in the hopes she’ll use the veto on her if she wins. They’ve never been really close, but she’s the closest thing to an ally she has right now.

The classic comp is back! The first clue is: “I loved to bring the drama, I love to compete, but when the votes were tied, I couldn’t take the heat!”

@swampassthing! You have won the Golden Power of Veto! (Is it time to start calling you the Veto Queen?????)

Will she use the veto to save one of the nominees? She’s done it before!

She doesn’t! @swampassthing decides not to shake up the house, and keep the calmness that came after the nomination ceremony. But will the calmness last.....

For the second time this season, @cirie-sandra-michaela breaks down over the game. After losing one of his closest allies last week and knowing what a threat he is, the emotions get to him and he loses it. He screams in the backyard for a while and scares some of the other houseguests, but eventually he calms down after @fucklauryn assures him he’ll be fine and that he’s stronger than he knows.

The next morning, however

@flopbb-22 spots another banner being flown over the backyard. This time, it reads “@flopbb-22 is a flop! Get him OUT!” Of course, @flopbb-22 takes this hard, already being hard on himself for not having won anything yet.

But the dynamic duo is back at it again, and @kaysarswhore is always there to comfort a friend in need; after all, she had a banner about her FIRST

After a relatively calm week in the house, this live eviction should be just as calm.

Julie: “Hello houseguests! Now that we’ve gotten to jury, I’ve started to learn all of your names, and we can do questions now!

First, @cirie-sandra-michaela, you had a tough week. What are you missing most from home?”

@cirie-sandra-michaela: “My dog! I love them with my whole heart and I would give anything to see their furry little face.”

Julie: “That’s adorable. @fucklauryn, what’s been the hardest part about living in the BB house so far?” 

@fucklauryn: “Honestly? I’ve loved getting to know these people, but some of them are annoying as hell! It’ll be nice to get back to my life with the people I’m used to, and hopefully half a million richer!”

Julie: “Bold words! On that note, let’s get to the vote!”

@theminionjcfucked: “This is the first time for both of us to hit the block. I have to say, from the bottom of my heart, that I know I’m one of the best to ever play, whether I go tonight or whether I stay. If you wanna be known as someone who runs with the wolves, keep me and run with me. If you wanna be someone who watches from the sidelines, send me home. That’s all I have to say.”

@iantxrry: “I’ll keep it short and sweet: the game is heating up, and I’m heating up with it. Keep me if you want to have some fun for the rest of the summer!”

Julie: “Some strong words from both of our nominees. How will this affect the vote?”

It looks like the vote is going the way of @theminionjcfucked​, with three initial votes cast against @iantxrry​

But coming from behind, three more votes have been cast against @theminionjcfucked​! Two more votes remain; will we have our second tie of the summer?

Julie: “ @theminionjcfucked​, you were our first HOH of the season, and now you’re the first member of our jury. How are you feeling?”

@theminionjcfucked​: “I truly feel at peace. I played the game the only way I know how, and if these people weren’t ready for that then so be it.”

Julie: “Let’s talk about the way you played. Why didn’t you have any alliances? Why didn’t you make something solid with anyone? Who were you even working with?”

@theminionjcfucked​: “Julie quit dragging me! I was working with a lot of the people who got evicted before me! @music-obsessednerd​ was a great ally, and @wheremy--demons--hide​ was another person I was working with. Of the people that are remaining, I would say the only one I really trust is @flopbb-22​! He’s close with that liar @kaysarswhore​, but I’ll forgive him *audience laughter*”

Julie: “Well, it’s so sad to see you go, but we’ll see you back here on finale night!

And then there were 10. Who will be the next to go? From outside the Big Brother House, I’m Julie Chen. Goodnight.”
