Character Evolution in Secrets of Sulfur Springs

This is about casting and physical attributes, not about development. This is about a show I truly love, and not one that I hate. These are all observations and thought processing about the casting of the Tremont/Dunn family in the series.

Daisy: Kyliegh Curran | Ashley B. Jones

So! Our girlie Kyliegh played her great grandmother (or great great grandmother? - I forget, Daisy, as a kid) And, I was like, "Well... it's not perfect.

You can't tell how much darker this woman is than Kylie in her photos, but on the show, she looked a tinge too dark for me to fully invest in the idea that she was well cast, but I rationalized that maybe she was inside more as a kid and then you know, was just lightskint like a light skinned biracial because of that when she was young. (I have met people whose parents tried keeping them inside on sunny days so they wouldn't get too dark), which is wild and off topic, because I don't think that would happen with Daisy, but saying IF she was simply inside a lot more as a kid, she could be that much lighter than the child actress vs the adult actress.

Harper's mama is biracial, I think. I feel like the kid that played her mom is, though Idk if the lady is or not. I do know that Kylie's character is supposed to be fully Black, even though the actress is not, irl. And her ancestor, Daisy, who she played had two pretty unambiguously Black parents and her and her little brother came out light skinned. Him, looking like his mama, her looking like the milkman's child..

Now... this happens sometimes in real life. But like I've said before - it don't happen nearly as much irl as it do on TV. So, Kyliegh as that woman - meh. Not a great casting choice, if not a bad one.

I understand they needed them to be identical to make the plot work, but I don't understand why everybody in the family is clearly Black then come her, actually biracial, and then here she come again a couple generations later, as Harper. Lol.

They did better in skin tone, but I would love sometimes for productions, especially big money bitches to try to do some side by sides every now and then and be like, "Are we sure this is the right choice?" or acknowledge some of the wild changes.

Where is a wide nosed sista to play this mama? Did she get a nose job at some point? We just supposed to imagine her nose was always that dainty? It has nothing to do with the plot, but Idk how I would overlook that you have such a drastically different nose in your adult life than you did as a kid. Her grandmother had a wide nose (scroll up) and she had one as a kid, then it just... went small when she grew up?

I am a big nosed bitch... and my nose was SMALLER as a child, because I was smaller. I actually was quite aware of Izabela's nose when she was Young Jess because we were going back and forth in time, from her nose to Diandra's nose. BEAUTIFUL WOMAN! They are both so lovely. They just do not look like people who grew up to be that person! Ma'am you didn't contour away all that nose. (I love both these actresses).

The fact that I dwell on this casting has nothing to do with their performances and everything to do with how badly I want casting to try to get people who actually look alike when they are playing the same character, unless for some reason within the story, they somehow look different. This Is Us only magnified my fixation on this subject. Most of them people looked just like them kids.

But like we said, we rationalizing that Mama Dunn is biracial, or at the very least so lightskinned that a biracial girl could be her daughter, especially since her negro nose with Jackson 5 nostrils turned into one of them Vogue magazine joints in her adult life.

Now this one... Baby...

It's just absurd. This is where we gotta draw the line, throw in the towel, stop rationalizing that there is a phenotype at play skipping generations or whatever else we could do with our earlier casting choices.

This photo is lighter than the woman is and you can still see that this is a whole nother human that would not in this universe that we currently know of, under any circumstances according to our knowledge of science, would this beautiful biracial baby girl grow up to be this absolutely unambigously Black, dark skinned woman!! She just wouldn't!

Two very lovely people who acted they asses off and earned them Disney paychecks and Disney better had paid them what they was worth. Because they both said that they was gon' out act whoever in this scene when Ruby got onscreen.

Whoever did this casting said, "F**k it, Girl. Call who we know," because ain't no way, Chile. Ain't no way y'all was putting no kinda thought or planning into this woman growing up from that girl. When she said she was Ruby, I said, "RUBY WHOOOOOO?"

I won't go into any further tangent about how the darkest ones cast in the family were the ones we didn't see much of, or in Ruby's case, the literal Magical Negro that had to save the day........................

I truly enjoy the show. It's a fave. But, yes. It has it's issues and I have mine and now that they are out of my head, because as a wise friend once said, "Misery loves an audience" (Shoutout to Noah, a Queen of Quotes) - I can now live in peace. Yes, and continue watching this, even though they have this problem in casting.

Sometimes, people think that colorblind casting only applies to when you just cast anybody for any role, willy-nilly, but this is an offset of colorblind casting, as well. Colorism casting, maybe. Where any Black person will do, despite looking nothing like the same character that they're supposed to be portraying. Or where certain skin tone versions of that character has more screen time. Sometimes, this is done through photos or short flashbacks...

But this show had these people onscreen talking and had us getting to know them and then colorblind casted them in different eras of their life. And perhaps I only notice it in Black people, because I don't have any type of face blindness when it comes to us. If that is the issue they're having, maybe they need people who can tell the difference between Black people and their skin tones and facial features to handle that aspect of a job.

That's all I have for now. Do watch the show, though. If you can handle fw with Disney. I mean, it's out there free, but I know some people are even not for that and I commend you. I be watching some of they stuff for free still, and this lil' rant? Ramble. This lil' ramble has been sitting in my lil' brain for a time.

Idk what it is called or if there is a name for it. Whenever they do the colorblind casting or the colorism casting within the same character. It feels like it needs it's own word. It's different from when they simply change the character from one medium to the next, to be within the same universe and have a person that simply does not share that character's physical characteristics, even though they're the same character.

Obrońca toruńskiego psychiatry jest adwokat Mariusz Lewandowski. Uważa, że jego klient został oskarżony bezpodstawnie, a prokuratura bezrefleksyjnie zawierzyła temu, co zeznał świadek koronny w procesie gangu "Lewatywy".

Psychiatra: "Dałem tylko rozpiskę leków". Finał procesu!

Izabela Cz.-M., lekarka rodzinna z Brodnicy oraz Piotr M., znany psychiatra z Torunia mieli pomagać członkom gangu "Lewatywy" - twierdzi prokuratura. Proces tej dwójki medyków dobiega końca. - Wierzę, że zostanę uniewinniony - mówi nam psychiatra.

Lekarze współpracowali z "Lewatywą"?

Proces obojga lekarzy przed Sądem Rejonowym w Brodnicy właśnie dobiega końca. Akt oskarżenia przeciwko nim skierowała Prokuratura Okręgowa w Bydgoszczy, która wcześniej zajmowała się rozległym śledztwem dotyczącym gangu Henryka L. "Lewatywy" i osób współpracujących na różnych polach z gangsterami.

Na 4 października wyznaczono termin kolejnej rozprawy, na której już wygłoszone mają zostać mowy końcowe. Rozleglejsze zarzuty, a więc i surowsza odpowiedzialność karna grozi brodnickiej internistce. Formalnie jednak każdemu z oskarżonych medyków grozi do 10 lat więzienia. Co zarzuciła im prokuratura?

Medycy za pieniądze "badali" i wystawiali zaświadczenia gangsterom?

Według ustaleń prokuratury, Henryk L. "Lewatywa" kierował zorganizowaną grupą przestępczą, która latami na tzw. karuzelowym obrocie węglem, olejem, złotem oraz pojazdami wyłudziła grube miliony złotych z podatku VAT, a także oszukała na wielkie sumy kilka banków. Nazywany był bossem bydgoskiego półświatka kryminalnego.

Zaskakującym wątkiem afery jest sprawa lekarzy, którzy według Prokuratury Okręgowej w Bydgoszczy mieli się wysługiwać "Lewatywie" i jego ludziom. Oczywiście, niebezinteresownie. Główne skrzypce w wytwarzaniu fałszywej dokumentacji medycznej dla gangsterów miała grać 51-letnia Izabela Cz.-M., internistka z Brodnica. To bardzo znana w mieście lekarka, ceniony fachowiec. Jej teściem jest wieloletni, były już prezes jednego z banków (obecnie: prezes honorowy). Izabela Cz.-M. była również lekarzem sądowym z listy Sądu Okręgowego w Toruniu.

Brodnicka lekarka odpowiada przed sądem za poświadczanie nieprawdy w dokumentacji medycznej (art. 271 par. 3 Kodeksu karnego) oraz przyjmowanie korzyści majątkowych z tego tytułu (art. 228 par. 3). Grozi jej do 10 lat więzienia. Kobieta nie przyznaje się do winy. Prokuratura jest jednak przekonana, że Izabela Cz.-M. dobrze wiedziała, co robi. Najprościej rzecz ujmując, miała wytworzyć fałszywe historie choroby Henryka L. "Lewatywy", jego prawej ręki Marcina B. oraz dwóch innych członków grupy przestępczej. W tym także mężczyzny, który w toruńskim procesie gangu "Lewatywy" ma status świadka koronnego.

Fałszywe zaświadczenia, skierowania na badania, skierowania do szpitala, a nawet zorganizowanie badania EKG metodą Holtera - tego wszystkiego miała dopuścić się Izabela Cz.-M. Sfałszowane kwity miały pomóc przestępcom unikać odpowiedzialności karnej. Jeden robił wszystko, by nie iść po wyroku do więzienia. Drugiemu zależało, by nie stawiać się w sądzie, itd. Według ustaleń prokuratury, za swoje usługi internistka pobierała różne kwoty. Zarzuty mówią o 4400 zł, 1500 zł, 500 czy 300 zł, w zależności od liczby wystawionych kwitów i ich rodzaju.

Zarzuty dla lekarza z Torunia Lżejszego kalibru zarzuty usłyszał 50-letni Piotr M., psychiatra z Torunia. Miał według prokuratury wystawić fałszywe zaświadczenia o stanie zdrowia psychicznego dla tego członka grupy "Lewatywy", który został świadkiem koronnym. W odróżnieniu od Izabeli Cz.-M. jego pomoc środowisku przestępczemu miała być skromniejsza i ograniczyć się do odpłatnej "pomocy" jednej osobie. Za wizytę brał po 150 zł.

Psychiatra: "Lekarka przysłała mi pacjenta. Mówiła, że to kuzyn" Oboje lekarze są czynni zawodowo. Pacjenci nie stracili do nich zaufania. Toruński psychiatra Piotr M. jest przekonany, że zostanie uniewinniony. - Tego pacjent skierowała do mnie brodnicka lekarka (Izabela Cz.-M.). Mówiła, że to jej kuzyn. Nie jest prawdą, bym wystawił mu jakieś zaświadczenie o stanie zdrowia do wykorzystania w sądzie czy innych instytucjach. Nie, dostał ode mnie tylko kartkę z rozpiską o tym, jak brać lekarstwa - mówi nam dziś (21.09) psychiatra.

Doktor Piotr M. podkreśla, że udzielił wspomnianemu mężczyźnie tylko fachowej konsultacji. Nie miał pojęcia, że jest związany ze światem przestępczym.

Obrońca psychiatry, adwokat Mariusz Lewandowski, tak komentował zarzuty wobec swojego klienta na początku procesu: "Mój mandant nie przyznaje się do winy od początku postępowania. Przez okres ponad 8 lat jego dobre imię i pozycja jako lekarza było szargane przez organy ścigania. Nie do przyjęcia jest sytuacja, gdy wskutek przeprowadzania 2 konsultacji w ramach jego praktyki psychiatrycznej – płatnych po 150 zł każda – stawia mu się tak poważne zarzuty. Co znamienne, akt oskarżenia w całości opiera się na pomawiającej lekarza relacji osoby uprzednio wielokrotnie karanej za poważne przestępstwa kryminalne, która sama zmierza do uchronienia się od wysokiego wyroku. Osoba ta uzyskała status świadka koronnego, co pozwoliło na uchronienie się przed możliwą wieloletnią karą pozbawienia wolności do 15 lat. Prokurator bezrefleksyjnie przyjął wspomnianą relację świadka jako wiarygodną w zakresie Piotra M., który nigdy nie był karany, a w środowisku lekarskim cieszy się szacunkiem" - podkreślał adwokat.

Do sprawy wrócimy w październiku.

What a long and strange trip it's been for Veronica Mars. After first debuting in 2004, the show's initial three-season run was split between two networks (UPN and The CW) before it was ultimately canceled with a cliffhanger ending in 2007. Cut to seven years later, when a movie continuation was released by Warner Bros (after being largely funded by fans via Kickstarter), followed by a series of novels and a comedy web series that lasted all of two months before ending.

Now the series is back, thanks to a revival on Hulu. A brand new season following the no-longer-a-teen detective Veronica Mars premieres on the streaming service on July 26. Is it worthy of the very vocal fanbase that has kept interest in the series alive for 15 years, though?

No, it's not. This isn't the Veronica Mas you know and love. Instead, it's a toxic nightmare that exists in the husk of the old show that makes me--a fan of the series since the first episode aired on UPN--hope that it's never brought back again.

The problems with the new Veronica Mars are easy to miss at first, especially since the show looks mostly the same. The major players are there, with Enrico Colantoni and Jason Dohring joining Bell as series regulars, playing her dad Keith and her on-again/off-again boyfriend Logan, respectively. And familiar faces are scattered throughout the episodes, including sporadic appearances by Percy Daggs III (Wallace), Francis Capra (Weevil), Dick (Ryan Hansen), Max Greenfield (Leo), and far too many more to name.

Once you dig past the surface, though, these episodes feel all wrong, and it all starts with the rocky relationship between Veronica and Logan. As always, it's not the healthiest. The big difference between this take on Veronica and Logan and where we've seen them in the past, though, is that it's not Logan making the relationship incredibly unhealthy; it's Veronica. In the new season, she's become fixated on the troubled and sociopathic person Logan was, rather than the adjusted and happy person he's striving to become through therapy. It makes her the toxic ingredient in a relationship that was always potentially poisonous for both characters.

This is one of the new season's biggest sins. In the past, rooting for Veronica was never difficult, even when she made questionable choices. In the end, she was always trying to do what was best, or at the very least, wasn't acting out in an attempt to harm others. This new Veronica exists in a space where she seemingly isn't happy unless the person she loves most is miserable. In the story of her relationship with Logan, she's the villain. To be clear, she's somehow worse than the guy who produced bum fight videos as a teenager.

Trying to evolve Logan into a well-rounded human is a wise call for the series and something that should have been done much earlier, when he became the ongoing love interest for Veronica. Doing so at the expense of the titular character, though, is a mistake that is hard to bounce back from.

The other main relationship in Veronica's life, the one she shares with father Keith, isn't as bad as it is completely strange. At first, it's exciting to see more of the father/daughter banter that drove their scenes in the original series, and the duo of Bell and Colantoni still has great chemistry. However, it doesn't take long to realize that the dynamic between these two characters hasn't evolved one iota since Veronica was 16 years old, which is very odd. Teenagers and adults in their 30s have different relationships with their parents, and that's something that probably should have been reflected in their interactions. Still, it's hard not to love Colantoni's Keith. He remains TV's coolest dad.

There are also a handful of new characters in the mix, including ones played by Patton Oswalt and JK Simmons. Both actors appear in recurring roles, as a pizza delivery person and an associate of "Big Dick" Casablancas (remember him?), respectively. Izabela Vidovic plays a teenager named Maddy that seems to have the same instincts Veronica did as a teenager. The actress, who has appeared in episodes of Supergirl and iZombie, shines in her role as a young girl who loses a loved one and looks for her own brand of justice.

Let's talk about the story, though. My biggest issues with the new season center on how the characters fans have grown to love are used--or barely used, in the case of Wallace. And while a great plot might be able to salvage that, the mystery on display in this new season is messy and confusing because the writers try to do way too much in only eight episodes.

The main storyline revolves around a series of bombings terrorizing the citizens of Neptune during the coveted Spring Break season the town relies upon--something that has never been mentioned in the franchise before. As is usual with this franchise, there are a number of twists and turns that unfold as Veronica attempts to figures out who's behind the bombings. While some of those twists may keep you briefly engaged, there are others that are completely unnecessary. If they don't serve the story, they have no business being there.

There are also several branching subplots. One deals with a Mexican drug cartel, while another with the never-ending class warfare in Neptune. Then there's the aforementioned Maddy's quest for vengeance, a subplot in which Veronica makes a new friend, and there's even some time dedicated to the internal politics of a conspiracy theory club's meetings. In the end, it's just too many stories to try to tell in eight episodes, especially when creator Rob Thomas and the show's creative team is also dedicating large amounts of time to Veronica and Logan's relationship as well as a side story about Keith's health.

As with many revivals, there's also a parade of cameo appearances, some of which are tied to the ongoing plots and others that happen for no rhyme or reason. They're fun to see in the moment, but they happen too late in the season, so any excitement at seeing those characters is lost amidst trying to stay on top of various concluding plots.

In the end, this is Veronica Mars in name, but feels like a season of the show that isn't meant to appeal to the fans who have yearned for more. Back in September 2018, Thomas tweeted a message to fans about the revival, which hinted at that. "I will say this: the movie was nostalgic. The Hulu limited series isn't going to be," he wrote. "Hardcore So-Cal noir. One big case. Eight episodes to tell the story. This is a detective show."

He's right. This is, at its base, an eight-episode story about a detective trying to solve a case. And sometimes the way she goes about it might remind you of Veronica in years past. However, when looked at in that light, it's a mediocre story on its own, due to the show's insistence on doing too much in a mere eight episodes. As for his insistence that this isn't about nostalgia, outside of the innumerable cameo appearances--all of which are for nostalgia's sake--that's a fair statement to make. Not because the new season is trying to be something new, though. Instead, it's because the way the titular character is written often makes her feel like a stranger.

It's possible that, should Thomas and Bell decide to run one more lap with the property, Veronica Mars could return to some form of its former glory. Figuring out how to rebound from this season, however, might be too big of a mystery for even Veronica to crack.

Veronica Mars Season 4 premieres July 26 on Hulu. The first three seasons are also available on the streaming service.

Aos seus pés, abriram as portas no último ano negócios como a livraria Megafauna, o restaurante Cuia e o bar Paloma. Eles se juntam a locais já estabelecidos como os bares da Dona Onça e Fel, além do espaço cultural Pivô, que se dedica à arte contemporânea.

O movimento não se restringe às curvas do gigante projetado por Oscar Niemeyer. Ele se espalha para os arredores, especialmente para as ruas da Vila Buarque que ficam entre o prédio e o elevado Presidente João Goulart, o Minhocão.

Nos últimos meses, aquele miolinho enfrentou algumas perdas, mas também ganhou novidades —como os restaurantes 31, Botanista e Bráz Elettrica. Ali também foi o local escolhido para implementar o Ocupa Rua, que criou espaços para pessoas se sentarem, comerem e beberem em frente a bares e restaurantes.

Depois de meses fechados e apostando no delivery, endereços conhecidos também estão voltando a abrir, caso do centenário Circolo Cucina, sob nova administração, e os bares o Jazz B e Cama de Gato –este último a partir desta sexta, dia 1º de outubro.

Com o frescor dos novos empreendimentos, não é incomum esbarrar em publicações nas redes sociais nas quais os negócios apresentam as casas vizinhas ao público. Essa política de boa vizinhança estimula um circuito cultural —que, ainda por cima, pode ser percorrido a pé.

Por ali, a possibilidade de caminhar de uma loja da moda para o bar do momento se soma à uma boa oferta de espaços com mesas na calçada.

A combinação de local aberto e rua por onde não passam carros, aliás, parece ser a fórmula do sucesso do Copanzinho e do Orfeu, grudados ao Copan e sempre cheios.

A piada que corre por ali é a de que “a variante Copanzinho do coronavírus está em produção”, por causa das aglomerações que ocorrem por lá. Mas é verdade que o boteco limita o público com um cercadinho —o que não ocorre com o vizinho Orfeu, administrado hoje em dia pela Fábrica de Bares, que não quis responder a perguntas da reportagem.

Prestes a completar 15 anos, o Bar da Dona Onça é um dos precursores da atual fase da região. “Eu nunca tive nenhuma pretensão de revitalizar o centro”, diz a chef da casa, Janaína Rueda. “Não existe isso de revitalizar um lugar que sempre esteve vivo”, completa.

Para ela, houve um momento em que o público migrou da região, que deixou de ser referência de sofisticação e passou a ser tido como degradado e perigoso, para ir a bairros como os Jardins.

Ao lado do marido, Jefferson, Janaína comanda outras estrelas que ajudaram a moldar a cara atual do local, como A Casa do Porco, o Hot Pork e a Sorveteria do Centro. E deve abrir mais um negócio nos arredores no próximo ano, a Mercearia do Centro.

A explosão do eixo Copan-Minhocão vai seguir ainda com o retorno do clube Love Story, que volta à ativa repaginado em uma sociedade que conta com o nome de Facundo Guerra, por exemplo.

​Além disso, a Ilion, uma empresa de investimento imobiliário, perdeu na pandemia o inquilino que ocupava a laje comercial do Copan, que tem incríveis 4.627 m² e era usada como sede corporativa de uma grande empresa. A procura de novos locatários se mostrou surpreendente, comenta a companhia.

“A laje despertou interesse de áreas que a gente não tinha imaginado”, diz Maxime Barkatz, sócio-fundador da Ilion. “Veio gente de coworking, de galerias de arte, de restaurantes”, conta, apesar de ainda não ter nenhum nome definido para o espaço.

Cada vez mais nos holofotes, a região acende agora o sinal amarelo para a gentrificação. “Eu acho que aqui ainda vai mudar, mas não vai chegar a ser um bairro pasteurizado”, fala Bruno Bocchese, dono do Fel e do Paloma. “Por aqui passa muita gente, de todas as classes. Vai continuar a ser um lugar interessante.”

A gentrificação tem se mostrado um problema recorrente nos centros urbanos. Movimentos como o dos hipsters, ou artistas ocupando centros abandonados pela elite apenas mascaram o verdadeiro culpado pelo fenômeno: o mercado e a especulação imobiliária. A recuperação de espaços degradados na cidade por movimentos sociais é, frequentemente, usurpada pelo mercado para que se possa lucrar. Por isso é de imensa importância uma política pública de controle de preços, ocupação e distribuição dos espaços urbanos, a fim de garantir que a especulação imobiliária não explore e adense imprudentemente partes da cidade enquanto esvazia outros.

What Is Value Investing?

If you're new to investing, you may not have settled on a particularly investing strategy. While experts say that many people can get away with investing in low-fee index funds rather than trading stocks in individual companies, some people enjoy deciding which company shares to buy. These active investors tend to self-identify as either growth investors or value investors.

Value Investing Basics

What is value investing? Value investors look for undervalued companies that are trading on the market for a lower price than they should, given their intrinsic worth. Value investors might do extensive research to determine whether the company's value exceeds its current valuation on the stock market. From a value investor's point of view, an undervalued company's stock is a good deal.

If you think that market prices are a fail-proof indicator of a company's value, value investing won't make much sense. But if you think that the market may be prone to inflating share prices based on hype or deflating share prices based on imperfect information, it's easy to see how an informed investor could snap up undervalued shares.

How does an investor get a sense of the true value of a publicly traded company? By researching the company's fundamentals. If you've ever heard the stories about Warren Buffett sitting at his kitchen table after dinner poring over company balance sheets to find good investments, that's a great example of value investing. Value vs. Growth Investing

So what's the difference between value investing and growth investing? The names say it all. Successful growth investing means investing in companies that have a high potential for growth. That growth could translate into more valuable shares and higher dividends for shareholders.

Growth investors always consider what might happen in the future, while some value investors only focus on the current assets and liabilities of a company. That's not to say that value investing is anti-growth. It's just that certain value investors view potential future growth as a bonus, not a prerequisite for buying a company's stock.

That's why some people advocate a hybrid growth-and-value investing strategy. This hybrid strategy would lead an investor to look for companies that a) have the potential for future growth, and b) are currently trading for a lower price than they're worth. In a perfect world, an investor could identify these stocks, buy low and sell high. In reality, it's difficult to "beat the market," and you can spend a lot of money on trading fees chasing high investment returns.

Bottom Line

Deciding on the asset allocation for your investing portfolio might require some soul searching. If you're just investing in a mix of stock and bond index funds you probably don't need to decide whether you favor value investing or growth investing. But if you're interested in investing in individual companies, whether for income or for fun, having an idea of where you stand on the growth vs. value debate could be a useful starting point.
