Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida said Thursday he's certain that House Democrats will not change tack and elect a moderate Republican for Speaker — and if they do, he'll resign.

Gaetz was speaking with the Fox News host Laura Ingraham and was asked about the possibility of Democratic representatives breaking ranks. Ingraham earlier Thursday night said on her show that there may be a scenario in which the Democratic Party helped elect Rep. Kevin McCarthy or another Republican so that "both parties share power on the committees."

Gaetz disagreed.

"I'm on the floor, Laura. These 212 Democrats are going to vote for Hakeem Jeffries every single time," the Florida Republican told Ingraham. "He is a historic candidate for them. They are not going to cleave off under any circumstance. I assure you of that."

"If Democrats join up to elect a moderate Republican, I will resign from the House of Representatives. That is how certain I am. I can assure your viewers: That won't happen," Gaetz added.

Gaetz was referring to House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who will become the first Black congressional party leader when he's sworn in. Jeffries secured all 212 votes from his party for the 11 speakership ballots held as of Thursday.

McCarthy is vying for the Speakership but has failed 11 consecutive times to secure the 218 votes needed. He now needs to convince the 20 hardliners — dubbed "Never Kevins," a crew of congresspeople blocking his Speakership bid — that he's the man for the job.

Gaetz might have some cause for confidence. On Tuesday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York was spotted speaking with Gaetz on the House floor. The Democratic congresswoman told The Intercept that during that conversation, she assured Gaetz that her party would not help McCarthy get the votes he needed.

"McCarthy was suggesting he could get Dems to walk away to lower his threshold," Ocasio-Cortez told The Intercept of her conversation with Gaetz. "And I fact-checked and said absolutely not."

Other Democrats also struck a similar tone, making it clear that they would not throw McCarthy a lifeline.

"At the end of the day, this is a Republican mess," Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna told CNN earlier in the week. "This is a failure of them to govern. This is their problem to fix."

Gaetz is a prominent figure in the "Never Kevin" movement. Before the first speakership vote Tuesday, he delivered a scathing rebuke of the California congressman.

The Florida congressman has also been trolling McCarthy and mocking him for his consistent failures. On Tuesday, Gaetz posted on Twitter a letter to J. Brett Blanton, the Architect of the Capitol, asking why McCarthy was allowed to work from the Speaker's Suite despite not yet landing the job.

"What is the basis in law, House rule, or precedent to allow someone who has placed second in three successive Speaker elections to occupy the Speaker of the House Office?" Gaetz wrote in his letter. "How long will he remain there before he is considered a squatter?"

Gaetz has over the past three days consistently voted to block McCarthy from securing the speakership. On Thursday, Gaetz voted for former President Donald Trump to be Speaker, even after McCarthy made significant concessions to the "Never Kevin" camp.

McCarthy was initially confident in his bid for Speaker after winning the nomination at a House GOP leadership meeting in November, following the midterm elections.

But members of the far-right House Freedom Caucus threw a wrench into McCarthy's campaign, saying they wouldn't support his bid unless he committed to less government spending and agreed to give the party more power to remove the speaker.

Representatives for Gaetz and McCarthy did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

It’s Monday the 13th!  SCAAAAAARY.

You know what else is scary?  Steve Bannon.  Like... really scary.  I’ve written plenty about Bannon (and his sociopathic nephew, Stephen Miller), but this latest installment of evilwatch really brings the whole thing together.

I’m loathe to cite a column from the Huffington Post, as its partisan affiliations and tendency towards outrage usually place it on the same level as Buzzfeed and Occupy Democrats.  But just as Buzzfeed has done some good political reporting as of late, HuffPo can sometimes unearth a worthwhile story.  Such is the case here, where it examines the worldview Steve Bannon espoused numerous times before ascending to the White House.  Spoiler alert: it’s one filled with fire, brimstone, and plenty of good old fashioned hucksterism. 

In their piece, Paul Blumenthal and JM Rieger focus primarily on Bannon’s seeming obsession with the language and ideas of “generational theorists” William Strauss and Neil Howe.  Strauss and Howe are famous (probably the wrong word) for their prophecy of a “Fourth Turning” in American history.  As described by Blumenthal and Rieger, this “Fourth Turning” is supposedly the inevitable, apocalyptic conclusion of a fourth major cycle in recent American history, the others being are the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and the Great Depression/World War II (no mention of World War I?  Strange...).  As I don’t have time to go deep on these pseudoscientists, I went straight to Wikipedia to supplement my knowledge (don’t judge).  I found, among other things, that Strauss and Howes’ “generational theory” involves a belief that there would be functionally no generation gap between baby boomers and their offspring.  Pardon my French, but these dudes is dumb as shit.  Oh, and did I mention they came up with their (unfounded) theories before the proliferation of the Internet (which has had, you know, a moderate effect on society)?  Even the dumbest hypotheticals and futurist theories can be great for dinner table conversation, but they are universally terrible for national policy.  And yet Bannon not only believes in Strauss and Howes’ madhouse philosophy, but he is now in a position to bring it about (if he so desires).

Simply put, this is scary.  It’s very scary.  And it doesn’t seem likely to change (Bannon seems about as likely to admit he has ever been wrong about anything as his boss).  Thus, I will never get tired of writing about this incredibly lucky, antisemitic, abusive hatemonger... at least until he is separated from any semblance of power.

Hopefully people like Blumenthal (who calls himself a “Money in Politics reporter”- love that) and Rieger won’t, either.

Last week, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy sent a letter to Republicans informing about an upcoming recall vote this week. The recall vote, as McCarthy explained, regards GOP Rep. Liz Cheney’s position as the House Conference Chairwoman. 

Cheney, over the past several weeks, has provoked the ire of Republicans with consistent criticisms against former President Trump. House GOP members are largely focused on winning back the House majority; however, Republicans in the House also acknowledge that having Trump’s support will immensely aid this endeavor. Therefore, it does not bode well to have the House GOP Conference chair publicly speaking out against Trump.

In the weeks leading up to today, Republicans warned against Cheney alienating herself from the House GOP and failing to focus on the future. This, therefore, engendered today’s House vote resulting in Cheney’s removal from the House Conference chair post, as Washington Examiner documents. 

What to Know About the House GOP’s Vote Against Cheney

This morning, House Republicans conducted a voice vote regarding Cheney’s role as the chair of the House GOP conference.

Unlike the last vote that Cheney faced, Republicans chose this time to oust Cheney from her post. GOP leaders ultimately believe that the now-former House Conference Chairwoman focused too much on the past, rather than unifying with Republicans for a common future goal.

Following the vote ousting Cheney from House Republican leadership, “Liz Cheney”, “House Republicans”, and “House GOP” trended on Twitter. Americans weighed in with their thoughts, noting whether or not they support or oppose House Republicans’ decision today. 

In the days leading up to this vote, Leader McCarthy spoke critically about the dangers of House GOP leaders losing focus and “relitigating” what’s already done. 

Cheney’s Reaction to the House Vote and More

This morning, Cheney openly responded to House Republicans’ vote to remove her from leadership. The Wyoming congresswoman vowed to do whatever she can to ensure that former President Trump never makes it back into the Oval Office.

These remarks followed Cheney’s Tuesday speech on the House floor; in this speech yesterday, Cheney denounced refusals to accept election results and the decision to “embolden the liar” by staying quiet. 

In the wake of the House Republicans’ vote, the House Conference chair position is open. GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik is expected to succeed Cheney in House GOP leadership. Thus far, former President Trump, Leader Kevin McCarthy, and Minority Whip Steve Scalise endorsed Rep. Stefanik.

The politicians who tried to overturn an election — and the local news team that won’t let anyone forget it

The journalists at WITF, an all-news public radio station in Harrisburg, Pa., made a perfectly reasonable decision a few months ago.

They decided they wouldn’t shrug off the damaging lies of election denialism.

They wouldn’t do what too many in Big Journalism have done in recent months: shove into the memory hole the undemocratic efforts by some Republican elected officials to delegitimize or overturn the 2020 presidential election.

Too many Sunday news shows repeatedly book the likes of Kevin McCarthy, Ted Cruz and Ron Johnson without reminding viewers how these members of Congress tried to undo the results of the election — and encouraged the Trumpian lies about election fraud that led to the violent assault on the U.S. Capitol less than four months ago. A rare exception is CNN’s “State of the Union,” which hasn’t booked a single member of the so-called Sedition Caucus since January.

“There’s a kind of clubby atmosphere on these shows, part of the Beltway Bubble mentality, in which it’s become almost impolite to raise the topic of the insurrection,” Princeton University history professor Kevin Kruse told me.

“CBS This Morning,” for example, sent out an email alert last week touting its exclusive interview with Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), one of the seven senators who voted against certifying the election results in Pennsylvania. Scott blasted President Biden for “spending us into oblivion” and mocked him for not achieving bipartisanship — yet interviewer Anthony Mason never mentioned that Scott had literally tried to overturn Biden’s election.

“109 days after Jan. 6, ‘history will remember’ is a complete joke,” Matt Negrin of “The Daily Show” tweeted last week. He added: “These media outlets want you to forget.”

But Harrisburg’s WITF has gone a different route: They want you to remember.

Months before the election, the station’s reporters and editors were already deeply alarmed by what they saw unfolding. “We could see the disinformation really taking hold, this idea that the only way President Trump could lose is if the election were rigged,” Tim Lambert, the station’s news director, told me last week.

The pro-Trump media world peddled the lies that fueled the Capitol mob. Fox News led the way.

The deadly culmination of that anti-democratic lie, the Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6, solidified their thinking. In late January, the station — whose newsroom includes six reporters and two editors — posted an explanatory story stating that they would be regularly reminding their audience that some state legislators signed a letter urging Congress to vote against certifying the Pennsylvania election results, and that some members of Congress had voted against certifying the state’s election results for President Biden, despite no evidence to support their election-fraud claims.

These elected officials, WITF reminded its audience, either knowingly spread disinformation or flat-out lied in an effort to keep Trump in office.

“This was an unprecedented assault on the fabric of American democracy,” the statement said.

The station has stuck to its pledge in its day-to-day coverage ever since, by simply and without fanfare including boilerplate language about how lawmakers conducted themselves during the attempts to overturn the election whenever they are mentioned in the course of regular news coverage.

For example, a recent story about a state legislator’s efforts to get Pennsylvanians vaccinated was accompanied by a sidebar of text about the lawmaker in question.

“State Sen. Ryan Aument (R—Lancaster) was one of 17 Republican state senators who signed a Jan. 4 letter that asked Congress to delay electoral college certification because, it said incorrectly, SCOTUS ‘is to hear Trump v. Boockvar in the coming days.’ On Jan. 11 SCOTUS refused to fast-track the case. The election-fraud lie led to the attack on the Capitol.”

On-air stories use similar language as a tagline at the end of news segments.

The station’s effort has been generally well-received, said Scott Blanchard, editor of StateImpact Pennsylvania, a public-media collaboration, who joined in the planning.

So you’re being held accountable? That’s not ‘cancel culture.’

“We struggled because this is not the normal thing,” Blanchard told me. “We had to ask ourselves, ‘Does this mean we are not independent journalists?’ ” But ultimately, he and Lambert — and the WITF reporters — felt that sustained accountability was paramount.

“We’re out on a ledge here,” Lambert remembers thinking. Both he and Blanchard hoped other news organizations would join them. “But it’s been radio silence,” Lambert said.

To be sure, other news organizations, including The Washington Post, are covering the aftermath of the election fraud lies and the insurrection, sometimes in innovative ways, as NYU professor Jay Rosen recently wrote. ProPublica has established a “democracy beat,” and a nonprofit news organization, Votebeat, focuses on election integrity.

But I’d like to see more accountability. So would Princeton’s Kruse. “There’s a tendency in the political media to get caught up in the story of the day and not dwell on the things that need to be reckoned with,” he said.

If it were up to him, Kruse would prescribe a simple rule for network TV producers thinking about putting election denialists on-air: “Don’t book them, as long as they haven’t publicly retracted.”

The Harrisburg station expects to continue its practice at least through the 2022 elections and possibly through 2024. If legislators change their minds, the station will reflect that in their language, but it won’t simply wipe the slate clean for them.

“Elected officials are going to run on this,” Blanchard said. “This is an example of their judgment.”

In other words, no memory hole. No “let’s just move on.” And, sorry, no amnesty.
