woah! just saw your bio change to software engineer. how did you transition? is it any different than web dev?
i also went on a TikTok rabbit hole and people are saying it’s useless to learn html/css and it’s not an actual language. honestly idk why I thought it would be easy to learn html > css > javascript > angular > react and somehow land a good paying job…
it’s gonna take YEARS for me to have a career, i feel old… especially with no degree
Tumblr media
Hiya! 🩶
This is a long reply so I answered your question in sections below! But in the end, I hope this helps you! 🙆🏾‍♀️
Tumblr media
🔮 "How did you transition?"
So, yeah my old job title was "Junior Web Developer" at a finance firm, and now my new title is "Frontend Software Engineer"! In terms of transition, I didn't make too much of a change.
After I quit my old job, I focused more on Frontend technologies that were relevant, so I focused on React.js and Node.js. I used YouTube, books, and Codeacademy. My first React project was >> this Froggie project <<~! Working on real-life projects such as the volunteering job I did (only for a month) where they used the technologies I was learning. So basically I did this:
decides to learn react and node 🤷🏾‍♀️
"oh wait let me find some volunteering job for developers where they use the tech I am learning so I can gain some real-life experience 🤔"
experienced developers in the team helped me with other technologies such as UI tools, and some testing experience 🙆🏾‍♀️
I did the volunteering work for both fun and learning with experienced developers and... I was bored and wanted to feel productive again... 😅
So for transitioning, I focused on learning the new technologies I wanted to work in and got some work experience (though it was volunteering) to back up if I can work in an environment with the tech. I still live with my family so I could do the volunteering job and have time to self-study whilst being okay financially (though I was tight with money haha) 😅👍🏾
🔮 "Is it any different than web dev?"
The old job was focused on using C# and SQL (including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript but fairly small) to make the websites, they were fairly basic websites for clients to use just to navigate their information needed. They weren't fancy cool web design because they didn't need to be, which was what made me bored of the job and wanted a change.
I am only a week into the job and have been working on small tickets (features for the site), but I think after a month or two into the job I will make a proper judgment on the difference~! So far, it's kind of the same thing I did in my old job but with new workflow tools, React-based projects, and funny people to work with 😅🙌🏾
🔮 "People are saying it’s useless to learn HTML/CSS and it’s not an actual language."
Yes HTML is a markup language and CSS is a stylesheet but they are the foundation of like 90% of the websites on the internet, I wouldn't ever call them "useless". Frameworks such as React, Django, Flask, etc still require HTML and CSS code to make the website's structure and styling. CSS frameworks like Tailwind and Bootstrap 5 still use CSS as their base/foundation. Not useless at all.
Don't focus on what other people are doing and focus on your own learning. I repeat this all the time on my blog. Just because one or a couple people online said one technology is useless doesn't mean it is (this is applied to most things in tech). Someone told me jQuery was entirely useless and no bother learning it - I did it anyway and it helped me better understand JavaScript. Anyhoo, try things YOURSELF before listening to what people say - make your own judgment. Not going to let a random Tech bro online whine about how annoying Python or C or whatever is to ruin my want to learn something. (This is all coming from a girl who loves web development very much's point of view :D)
🔮 "I thought it would be easy to learn html > css > javascript > angular > react and somehow land a good paying job"
Web Dev route, I love it! That's literally the same steps I would have taken if I had to start again~! For each new tech you learn, make a bunch of projects to 1) prove to yourself that you can apply what you've learned 2) experience 3) fill that portfolio~! 😎🙌🏾
With Angular and React, I would pick one or the other and focus on being really good at it before learning another framework!
I also recommend volunteering jobs, freelancing, helping a small business out with free/paid m
Lastly, you do not need a degree to get a job in Web Development. I mean look at me? My apprenticeship certificate is the same value as finishing school at 18, so in the UK it would be A-Levels, and I completed it at the ripe age of 21! I have no degree, I applied for university and got a place but I will give that space up for someone else, I'm not ready for university just yet! haha... (plus erm it's expensive at the end, what? even for the UK...). Sure, I used to avoid the job postings that were like "You need a computer science degree" but now if I were job searching I would apply regardless.
People switching careers in their 40s going into tech instead are making it, you can switch anytime in your lifetime if you have the means to! (everyone's situation is different I understand).
I'm not too good at giving advice but I hope in the rambling I made some sense? But yeah that's all! 😎

11 Tips to Learn JavaScript Fast
Tumblr media
JavaScript is a crucial programming language for anyone looking to enter the world of web development. Mastering it can open doors to building dynamic websites, mobile applications, and even server-side applications. Whether you're a beginner or someone looking to sharpen your skills, learning JavaScript quickly requires a mix of dedication, practice, and smart strategies. Here are 11 tips to help you learn JavaScript faster.
1. Understand the Basics First
It’s tempting to jump straight into advanced concepts, but a strong foundation is key. Start by learning the basic syntax, data types, variables, loops, and conditionals. Get comfortable with how JavaScript fits into the broader ecosystem of web development, particularly how it works alongside HTML and CSS.
2. Break Down Complex Problems
When faced with a challenging problem, break it down into smaller tasks. This approach makes coding less overwhelming and helps you understand how different pieces of code interact with each other. Dealing with smaller problems also boosts your confidence as you master solving each one.
3. Practice, Practice, Practice
JavaScript isn’t something you can learn passively. Dedicate time every day to coding. The more you practice, the more natural it will become. Use online platforms like CodePen or JSFiddle to write and test your code, or build small projects that can help reinforce what you’ve learned.
4. Learn the DOM (Document Object Model)
One of JavaScript’s most powerful features is its ability to interact with the HTML DOM. Learn how to manipulate HTML elements using JavaScript. This will allow you to create interactive and dynamic websites, making your learning journey both fun and practical.
5. Use Debugging Tools
Errors are inevitable when coding, but learning how to debug effectively will save you time. Use the built-in developer tools in browsers like Chrome to inspect and debug your code. Understanding how to locate and fix errors will help you grow as a developer faster.
6. Work on Real Projects
Building real projects gives you hands-on experience with JavaScript. Start with small projects such as creating a simple calculator, a to-do list, or a quiz app. As your confidence grows, try tackling more complex projects that integrate APIs or frameworks like React.
7. Master Functions and Objects
JavaScript heavily relies on functions and objects. Understanding how to create and use functions effectively will help you write cleaner, more efficient code. Likewise, objects are essential for organising data and structuring your programs.
8. Learn ES6 Features
ES6 (ECMAScript 2015) introduced many new features that make JavaScript more powerful and developer-friendly. Familiarise yourself with important ES6 concepts like let, const, arrow functions, template literals, and promises. These will help you write more modern and efficient code.
9. Leverage JavaScript Libraries
JavaScript libraries like jQuery, Lodash, or even frameworks like React and Vue.js can help you learn faster by abstracting complex tasks. These tools allow you to focus on core learning without getting bogged down by repetitive coding tasks.
10. Join Developer Communities
Engage with fellow learners and developers by joining JavaScript communities online. Platforms like Stack Overflow, GitHub, or Reddit offer opportunities to ask questions, share knowledge, and collaborate on projects. Learning with a community not only accelerates your progress but also makes the journey more enjoyable.
11. Stay Consistent and Keep Learning
Learning JavaScript fast doesn’t mean cutting corners. Stay consistent in your practice and keep learning. JavaScript is always evolving, with new updates and frameworks emerging regularly. Keep yourself up to date with the latest trends and advancements in the language.
By following these tips and staying committed, you’ll be able to master JavaScript in no time. For additional insights, check out our blog on 10 JavaScript Tips and Tricks to Optimise Performance.

72. Software Engineering Apprentice, Pt. 2
I hope I haven’t lost you yet, but I will be alright if I have.  I am being open and honest and doing what I need to do to help someone else by telling my story.
I will resume.  Before my in-person interview for my old company, I received another on-site invite from a trucking company that I was considering.  It was okay.  I was not nervous leading up to it because I did not want to work there, but I was not quite sure what to expect.  Of course, I imagined the worst: being lost for five hours or being so exhausted that I could not think despite knowing the answer.  None of that happened.  I knew much more than I thought.  I had one coding exercise on a laptop, lunch with one of their engineers, a system-design exercise on a whiteboard that I used a lot of my knowledge of my old company’s business on, another two more coding exercises: one on a whiteboard and the other online from an interviewer that video-called into our interview.  In the lunch, the engineer had already eaten so he pretty much watched me eat.  The interviewers never asked or allotted time for me to use the restroom, I had to ask.  I knew this was a no-no from the recruiters at my old job who taught me some things to be mindful of when I was interviewing candidates.  For the coding whiteboarding exercise, the proctor set it up in so unclearly.  When it was my time to whiteboard, he instructed me to whiteboard as he kept working on his laptop on work that was not related to the interview and that he would let me know when I was going in the wrong direction. So, I’m at the board and he was behind me not saying anything, typing away at his laptop.  It was disrespectful and had me nervous.  However, I ket a positive spirit.  I did not answer it and felt, “Welp! There goes the interview!”  I had answered all of the questions besides this one in my 5 hours of interviewing, but in each coding exercise, I would doubt myself a bit and that would distract me noticeably despite eventually getting to the answer.  One of the things that attracted me to software engineering was the approach and build up to problem-solving.  The problem being solved is the bonus, but the foundation and what makes an engineer a great one, to me and many others, is how they arrived to their solution.
I did not get an offer but they said I did well and that it was a hard decision.  It was perfect prep for the on-site interview at my old company that I wanted the most.
That interview was going to be another 5-hour one: two back end exercises and two front-end.  I enjoyed this one’s style because it was building an app and each exercise built on itself.  There were no random algorithm or gotcha questions.  The interview tested my ability to read through an already built codebase to see if I could be effective and add to it properly.  Approach, not necessarily if I got to the answer or not, was what was judged.
In prep for that interview, I could not get the app to run and was slightly worried but not distractingly worried.  I studied the app that I built for school and built one from scratch so that I would know every step of it.  There was so much I learned in that because in building my app, I was just trying to build as fast as possible without understanding the best approach or being able to recreate every step.  A huge no no.  My advice if you are building something: know WHY things are doing what they are doing.  Who cares if you know how to google a ton and plug and play if you do not know how to recreate it or anticipate correctly what your app should do.  I also learned jQuery.
The day before the interview, I got into another heated argument with my mother.  A colleague of hers introduced me to a founder via email and introduced me as nervous starting out a new career.  I thought this was a horrible way to introduce me as I was not nervous.  I though this was especially harmful because I had never told her that I was nervous.  I had not even spoken to the woman in years, well before I even got into my camp.  I concluded that it must have come from my mom.  I asked my mom if she was nervous or told her that I was and she declined and was offended that I assumed it was her.  I told my mom that it was a safe assumption that she was the one that told her I was nervous because my mom always asked me if I needed money and, despite me saying no and that I was fine, added money to my account.  This was one of my biggest gripes with my mom.  My mom often felt like money could by my love because she struggled with showing affection the way that I thought it needed to be shown: hugs, hanging out, productive conversations.  I did not feel really connected to my mom until high school.  In high school we argued a lot.  When she divorced from my father, it got so bad that she did not return my calls for months. My mom also, from her own fears in the workplace, told me not to negotiate my salary when I reached out to her for advice in my negotiations in my last role.  I felt that this was so detrimental to my success and did not even want her believing that she should not negotiate for herself.  I told her I had a very important day the next day, but this did not stop her.  So we argued for hours and I went to sleep well past the time I wanted to and with a headache from crying for hours.
I woke up the next day, had a good breakfast and made sure I looked presentable, professional, but still techy, for my interview, despite crying my eyes out the nigh before.  I got through the first front-end exercises of the interview better than I thought.  It was great being in a familiar office and seeing familiar faces.  The only interviewer I had worked with before was the interviewer I felt I had the hardest time communicating with.   I was trying to hard to focus on the backend but he kept pulling me to the front.  This felt limiting, as with my app, I could hop from the back to the front without restriction because it was my app.  I noted this as something to be mindful of when I start working as a software engineer professionally: there may be limitations to what I am able to edit depending on my role in the company.
In the break, I got a chance to catch up with the hiring manager.  He asked how my interviews were going and I told him that I was doing well but wish I could do better.  I wish I had not said this because one of the best lessons I have learned came from my legal writing teacher as a senior in college who reminded my classmates and me to never give more information that is necessary.  I felt I did not need to give any inkling that it was not going well, but I also did not want to sound over optimistic about a performance that I did not think was great.  I did not want to give the impression that my standards for a “good job” were low.  He reassured me that it was about my approach and not necessarily about exercise completeness, which was contrary to the interview directions before coming in that day that listed completeness as a judging criteria and this helped me refocus.
The worries I had about not being able to run my app before my interview came to life in my interview.  Because of how my laptop was configured, I couldn’t get it to run.  The interviewer and I tried for about 45 minutes.  I figured it out in the last 5 minutes of the interview, but the interview was only an hour long so I did not get to add to the codebase.  I knew that at about the 20 minute mark when we still did not have the app up and running.  However, I stayed calm and gave her something to write about. Did I stay calm?  Did I try to Google the problem?  Did I use the interviewer to the best of my advantage to get the job done.  Yes, yes and, kinda...:) . When in doubt, stay calm.
Tumblr media
This was right after the not-so-hot interview with the interviewer I had known before when I worked there, so I was starting to feel a bit down and that I would not be selected...but I kept focusing.  In this interview, as in life, I had to remember that anxiety and the demon of doubt rear their ugly heads when I am worrying about things I cannot control which is the past and the future.  I had to remind myself to stay tapped in.
Tumblr media
My final interview was with an engineer who had been with the company for a while.  The last time I saw him was in a post-mortem for a tax issue I saw coming but was told I could not control back when I was with the company.  Because I got no code down in the interview before it and the interviews built on themselves, I was nervous.  However, he was such a pro that this was not a problem to him.  He got in, got a sense of where I left off and was able to come up with something that we could work on together.  I enjoyed that interview the most.  In the end, I got to speaking a bit down about my performance and he pumped me up with, “What do you mean!?  You did great!”  This felt good.  I remembered, “Don’t give more information that is necessary,” and was about to get into why I felt down, but cut myself short and said, “But...okay...”
Tumblr media
I left feeling okay, hopeful and exhausted.  I left at the same time as another woman wrapping up her interview with the interviewer I did not have great communication with.  They were speaking in Spanish and this made me think that bias could have been at play.  Coming from me, the person who had worked there and hugged that interviewer before my interview because we knew each other, made me feel a bit hypocritical.  Despite my feelings, I encouraged that woman to congratulate herself for a job well done.  She was a bit flustered.  I wished her luck and gave her restaurant recommendations since she was from New York.

I’ll help you write many real-world projects that test your skills and build your understanding. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to design and code any feature on any website! This course beats attending any live bootcamp or workshop because I’ve put hundreds of hours into planning, recording, and editing. Plus you get lifetime access, and I provide outstanding support—I answer dozens of questions every day! Why learn Flask? Flask is a microframework for web development, written in Python. It’s lightweight and simple, so you can start using it straight away. As you go through the course and learn more about it, you’ll realize it’s also really powerful!
