Sunday 21st January 2024
>> I made a post yesterday of me mini-ranting about how I don't have any proper career goals because the ones I made years ago I've achieved now, so I'm questioning myself "What now? 🙃".
Then I remembered I have a recruiter mate and I emailed him asking for help and he gave me a long list of what I could do now to get better from my position. And I like sharing help so here's what he said + my own notes of what I understood from them~!
Hope this helps you too~!
Tumblr media
🩶 Assess Current Skills and Set Goals
Identify your strengths and weaknesses.
Set clear goals for technical and leadership skill development.
My notes: I am good at some languages/technologies whilst I am a complete noob in others. Yes, I use them but I am not confident in them and always have to Google what is going on. I need to make a list of all the languages I am good at and those I am not so good at. Maybe even list why I'm not good at them. The same goes for non-technical skills. Got to make plans/goals on how I will improve them and get out of my comfort bubble on my comfort technologies and expand! Leadership skills would probably improve when I get solo projects given/have to present at Team meetings on my own in front of everyone~!
🩶 Technical Skill Enhancement
Deepen your proficiency in current programming languages.
Explore new technologies and frameworks relevant to your field.
My notes: I already answered this in the top one, but I shouldn't neglect my current skills to be able to learn the new ones. With the languages I am good and confident in, I still feel as though I haven't reached the more advanced stuff of that language. OOP stuff skill scares me in any programming language so I need to face my fears and learn it. From time to time, check what's popular in the market in terms of technology used and see which one aligns with my dream tech stack to use in the future and make plans to learn and develop myself~!
🩶 Project Leadership and Collaboration
Volunteer to lead small projects or take on more responsibility in current projects.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand different aspects of project development.
My notes: At work, I eventually (since I'm still new) should ask to be the lead on some projects just like my higher-up developer is to me. Lead my own projects, without having to report to someone unless in dire need or when the project is complete for testing, etc. The team is small so I should talk to the non-developers in the team and see from their POV how the project is. Understand different types of people in the team and communicate effectively. All of this can be transferred to non-work projects like an online group project on an Open-Source project on GitHub for example - lead projects and taking more responsibilities. Being able to talk to people with different skillsets as we work on a group project~!
🩶 Attend Workshops and Networking Events
Attend workshops, conferences, and networking events to expand your knowledge and connections.
Seek mentorship from experienced professionals, including CTOs.
My notes: My gosh, I dread this honestly. I'm still a relatively shy person so going to workshops and events still brings small anxiety but that's something I do want to break~! I will never know what I will learn, who I will meet etc if I don't go to one! I want to aim that this year I would like to go to one, preferably in or near my city. I always love the idea of having a mentor, honestly, I was going to pay someone to help mentor me on that part ( >> loads of cites offer mentorships for programming!!! ) but I feel like my manager right now is that person so I will keep working with him to develop more~!
Tumblr media
In conclusion, self-improvement as a programmer is both challenging and super hard to get started BUT rewarding in the end~!

job hunt tipssssss (and lessons learnt..)
Tumblr media
tailor your resume to each position you apply
(1) always make your employers' job easier
include only the relevant experience and keep the descriptions straightforward.. recruiters are basically just ticking boxes, make it easy for them to do so or expect them to bin your CV after a quick glance
(2) have too many part-time/work gaps?
i highly recommend using a skill-based CV than a chronological CV for this case; not only is it waaaaaaaaaay easier to prepare but also makes your experience look more put-together since you can mix & match your relevant skills.. give it a shot if you've inconsistent work history or want to have a career change; i should mention it's also a game changer for people whom English isn't the first language
(3) review your cover letter before heading to an interview
i mean you've already explained why you're a great fit for the job in the application, just take advantage of that effort and reiterate everything during the interview --- preparation done!
Tumblr media
dont use the same answer for interviews
.. it'll definitely make you come across as average
there are 3 key and frequently asked questions you should be ready for:
(1) tell me about yourself
start with a basic introduction, followed by your previous work experience (again, making them relevant to the job) and wrap up with a glimpse of your personality -- for instance, say something like.. I see myself as an ambitious and self-motivated person (.. and how these qualities fit the job profile!)
(2) what do you know about us/ why do you want to work for us
always research the company; mention its values or services, and how they resonate with you
(3) what can you offer us/ why do you think you suit this job
highlight how your experience aligns with the job requirements; this demonstrates your dedication and preparation.. and also shows the employer what they can expect from you
i hate interviews (who doesnt?).. i believe many of us are very qualified for jobs we're interested in but often struggle to demonstrate our competence effectively; my way to make the process less agitating is to view it as a cool opportunity for employers to learn about us: it's not an exam.. rather, it's a level playing field where two or more strangers come together to mutually explore each other.
this is your chance (after putting so much effort into preparing the application) to shine and let them know you're the perfect fit for the job they're offering!
Tumblr media
never trust the reaction of the interviewer!
some interviewers acted super affirmative to each of my responses, making me feel like i was nailing the interview.. but then i ended up getting no job; i understand the intention is to encourage interviewees during the process, but pls dont take them too seriously and get carried away
stay focused and humble instead
Tumblr media
always reflect after each experience (exactly what i'm doing now)
it's important to reflect on your performance and seek improvement for future applications
i always discover areas that could be done better while preparing for new job applications, even though i felt that i'd already given my best for the last one
the competition is fierce but dont worry about competing with others (what you cant control); instead, concentrate on what you can control --- demonstrating how you're the best candidate!
always put yourself in your employer's shoes and do the homework; focus on the good and keep trying, one day all your hard work will pay off and get the job you deserve
.
(i regret so much that i didnt perform better during my interview🥲i dont want the same to happen to you, pls take my tips and prepare as much as you cn💔)
.
quick update - i actually ended up getting the job🤘
if someone like me, who struggles with English, can get a job in the UK after all the challenges, you can land the job you want too. trust the process - I believe in you!

Just the Tip #01: De-Centering Men
Girl, I’m going to hold your hand while I say this: You are doing fine. The pressure from scrolling and the constant lessons from our big sisters in their 30s, with their “what I wish I knew in my 20s” and “you need to de-center men,” are endearing but fucking overwhelming. Ladies, as long as you’re not letting a man derail your entire life or make decisions for you that don’t align with your values and virtues, then YOU ARE FINE. You can still crave a partnership and romance while de-centering men in your life.
For instance, I am a self-proclaimed workaholic, which is probably also why I’m chronically single. I still entertain men and their pursuits, and I’m not avoidant to the possibility of being emotionally vulnerable. But I still do the damn thing every day and continue making strides toward my defined passions and goals. However, there is a fine line that I have to walk — that we all have to walk — the self-sacrificial actions in the name of “Is he the one?”
By this, I mean canceling your girl dinners because he finally texted back and wants to take you to dinner (and you have to decide on the restaurant, then sit and wait for an hour because he “took a nap”), skipping your favorite yoga session with that teacher who makes it impossible to sit down the next day because it’s the only time in his super busy schedule that he can hang out (as if he’s the only person on God’s green Earth with a job), or throwing out a week's worth of groceries because he spent the week at your apartment and DoorDashed every single meal, even though you had food you could’ve eaten anyway. I am not innocent — I have been there, and that’s okay. You aren’t going to learn unless you experience it. But once you experience it, shut up and don’t experience it again.
If your car got broken into because you forgot to lock it one night, would you continue to keep it unlocked every night after? No! Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice… I need to stand the fuck up.
The man for you won’t care that you can’t hang out tonight because you have pre-existing drinks planned with your coworkers. If anything, he’ll probably be attracted to the fact that you have a life outside of dating. And if he does get upset, then go get those fucking drinks and potentially find someone else at happy hour.
De-centering men isn’t a surefire way to be celibate and alone for the next 40 years. It literally is just living your life, which I’m sure you are doing, and not letting the rejection, the possibility, or the half-assed effort of a man skew your priorities.
My advice, if you're wondering whether you're a culprit of this leniency, is to ask yourself next time, “What would he do?” And 9 times out of 10, he will always choose himself. Ladies, I need you to start doing the same.

How I Started Earning With AI Without Quitting My 9-to-5
Tumblr media
The Easy Path to Letting AI Do the Work For You — Even If You're Not a Tech Whiz You Don't Need to Leave Your Job to Create a New Life Most individuals believe creating a better life is something you need to begin by burning bridges. Leaving your job. Being super risky. Going "all in."
I used to think that way too.
Each scroll through my feed demonstrated creators enjoying dream lives: YouTubers, freelancers, AI entrepreneurs, course sellers. It seemed like they'd all taken a leap, abandoned stability, and somehow transformed their passion into profit.
Here's the secret nobody tells you:
You don't have to leave your job to make money with AI.
The Lie Social Media Sells There's a myth that in order to succeed with AI (or anything on the internet), you must become a digital nomad full-time or start a startup.
That's the internet chatting — not reality.
In fact, attempting everything all at once is a recipe for burnout. But with just a handful of hours each day, I began to generate real income on the side.
No coding.
No shelling out cash for pricey software.
No quitting.
Where Everything Changed For Me I chose to dip my toes in the water.
Not by starting a startup. Not by learning to code.
I just started applying AI tools to problems and content creation, and I did it while still punching the clock at my day job.
My plan was straightforward: Apply 1–2 hours a day to experimenting with real-world tools such as ChatGPT, Canva AI, and other no-code tools to accomplish things like:
Generate content for small businesses
Construct templates and digital products
Automation of freelance work
Provide services through marketplaces such as Fiverr and Upwork
As soon as I understood how many individuals were ready to pay for something that I could now do quicker (gratitude to AI), I dove in.
What You Can Do (Even If You're Not "Techy") Here are some easy ways to begin monetizing using AI today:
Sell content created with AI (ebooks, blog articles, social media copy)
Create digital products with AI tools such as Canva or Midjourney
Offer AI services to others: emails, outlines, proposals, copywriting
Launch a voiceless YouTube channel with AI scripts and voiceovers
Lease ChatGPT for freelance genius, not drudgery
None of this needs a degree. You simply need some curiosity, some extra time, and the desire to do rather than scroll.
Make AI Do the Work While You Hold onto Your Paycheck You don't have to jump – you just have to begin.
AI is here. It's strong. And it's empowering ordinary folks like you and me to make money on our terms.
Begin with your extra hours.
Let AI assist you while your stable job pays the bills.
No show. No gamble. Just a smarter way to create a better life.

Femme Fatale Guide: Top Career Tips To Set Yourself Up For Success
Figure out where your skills and passions align. Then determine the lifestyle/work culture you thrive in and what sacrifices you're willing to make in your chosen career path (for some, it's always traveling/talking to people 24/7, working late hours, unpredictable/unconventional hours, potentially lower pay/less predictable income, etc.). It truly depends on your top values, your personality, and your goals/priorities in life.
First focus on getting incredibly talented at your craft. Find a mentor(s) who will push you with their feedback/suggestions. Take classes/skills courses/read books & articles to gain more applicable knowledge/hard skills. Join clubs, apply to internships, volunteer, and request informational interviews in your desired field.
Make your skills marketable. Create a professional resume and/or neat portfolio/collection of work samples. Discover and articulate your USP (that should essentially serve as the backbone of your elevator pitch). Frame your skills through a customer/business-centric lens. How does your experience/skillset solve their problems and help a company/client achieve their goals?
Build a network for yourself. Don't be shy to reach out to companies/individuals who inspire you. Speak with your secondary school teachers and professors for connections. Create peer-to-peer networks, too, so you can grow together. Be a fearless networker and connector. Help others, do favors, and make the person glad they met/hired you. Make it your objective to be memorable through your work ethic/providing high-quality work products and showing up with a motivated & overall positive attitude allows people to like and trust you with their time, clients, money, etc.
Master the art of a killer email/cold pitch. Especially in today's world, learning how to sell yourself through intriguing emails/LinkedIn messages is the key to unlocking potential success. One client or opportunity can create momentum that will be useful years down the line, too.
When in doubt, follow up – on an email, pitch, job opportunity, connection, etc.
Be ruthless and relentless with your research. For new contacts, connections, opportunities, and information to support your pitches/job interviews/networking conversations, new technologies, and trends within your field. Read everything credible you can get your hands on. Display working knowledge and practical applications of these concepts and how they can benefit the person in front of you/their business.
Create systems. For how you structure emails/pitches, conduct research, different types of workflows/ work template structures for different types of projects, time-blocking, client funnels, etc.
Get comfortable with rejection. Use it as a primer for self-reflection and refining your craft/processes or help you pivot your approach to help you achieve your goals. Never take business decisions on behalf of a company personally (and vice versa).
Give yourself breaks, but don't give up. Tapping out for good is the only surefire way to fail at an endeavor. Be flexible in your path, but zeroed in on your goal(s). Learn when to quit or pivot, and when it's time to coast or seek growth.

Saturday 20th January 2024
Someone asked me earlier this week a question that I didn't really deeped about beforehand. Basically, I was stuck answering it and it boggled my mind ever since because it stuck to me how I didn't think about this earlier on?
"What are your career goals?"
Since I started learning programming and Web Development back in 2020, I just thought "Oh getting a proper job in Tech would be great!"... but now I got it, it's like okay what now? Do I just continue this, learn new things, and just stick to this position?
I had to answer this person straight away for specific reasons but I said "Maybe being a Senior Software Engineer would be nice 🤷🏾‍♀️" and yeah I'm sure having that title would be great for my Dad to boast to his family and mates about "Oh my daughter is a Senior Software Engineer~! 😎", which honestly I don't mind as he's happy, but what else? What do I actually want to work towards now - short and long-term?
But making short and long-term goals is very important. For some people, this helps them have a path for them to work towards. I am one of those people because that's what I did to get where I am now in my programming journey, but I didn't think THIS far as to what next after I got the job I wanted. I came up with some ideas but I might work on them a bit:
Senior Software Engineer be nice?
Whatever a CTO actually does? (long-term)
Be proficient enough in Web Development technologies to teach others properly maybe? Especially the younger generation (HELP I tried teaching my sister coding and she called me a nerd...)
Work on my own web app product thingy?? and sell?? and earn money?? (confused about how I would do that though)
Venture out to Game / App Development maybe? (long-term)
Ability to work anywhere internationally (I have other goals where I would have to visit countries so would also like to work in Tech as I complete those side-quests)
Right now I am comfortable working FOR someone / company - I'm the type that SOMEHOW I become a CEO I still would work than be a no work/meetings/travel to conferences type of CEO if that makes sense
Help other companies temporarily on Web Dev stuff (free or paid, I don't mind - just want experience, innit?)
Work in another country maybe? That doesn't speak English though cause that's cheating (to me, I like challenges and language learning is a really good one)
But maybe now I will have something to work towards, but I will soon convert this bunch of ideas to a roadmap a bit~! 🤔
Thank you for reading and hope this makes you think about your own goals in terms of career/work/profession~!

How did you move from work experience in government to jewelry?
I’d always been interested in art, and always loved jewellery, but I never really considered it as a career path until my second year of university, when I’d already joined some arts-based student societies, gained good marks in my compulsory art history exams, seen a little of the auction industry via my extracurriculars in wine, and met Alajos, realised that I needed a switch of career trajectory, and seen a little more of the art world that way, too.
I started off by joining a few non-student societies that focused on various aspects of the arts, and attending their lectures, exhibits, and events. There are so, so many passionate little groups, both local and national, that are full of established people in the industry and begging for younger members. I was often the youngest person in the room, and this worked wholly to my benefit, but I also did meet a few other young women who were a little older than me, had already begun their careers in art and auctions, and could advise me and help me out a little.
I cast my net pretty wide, and didn’t focus solely on jewellery. I joined my university’s numismatics society, for example, attended all sorts of different seminars and lectures, and met a good few professors and other academics who were very respected in the field and had connections to auction houses and art dealers. I was willing to take up any job offered to me that seemed even vaguely related to my ultimate goal, and I found myself helping out a wine and whiskey importer, travelling to Turkey to assist an ageing carpet dealer, spending a summer curating the interior of a Czech castle, archiving several thousand Orthodox icons, clearing the warehouse of a tiny village auction house, and entering writing competitions that promised a week’s work experience with much bigger names. I said yes to pretty much anything, asked around and got names and numbers from the most unlikely of places and people, and eventually, my reputation was enough that I could start working under more luxurious departments, and in more famous houses, bit by bit.
Frankly, knowing Alajos and his family helped a great deal, as well, since they’re pretty regular customers of the bigger auction houses and art dealers, and a known name in their own right—but I needed connections to vouch for me aside from my then-boyfriend, too, especially when it came to the Asia-Pacific region, where most of my work experience over the past year or so has been concentrated. I built a little network up from the bottom, and became pretty well-known as a knowledgeable and passionate jack-of-all-trades (with slightly annoying visa requirements) in the art world.
Essentially, I spent a while looking at the career descriptions and biographies of people, especially women, in positions that I wanted, figuring out what skills I’d need and where I’d get them, curating my look and my skill set towards the industry and pivoting away from my previous work experience—which, now, I no longer list on my CV—placing myself in positions where I could get to know influential people informally and know that they’d support me, and then showing up and excelling even in the less desirable jobs. It’s the same formula I’d really recommend for anyone who isn’t coming from a lot, but has access and opportunity to grow their network organically.
