Jakobs Castle, "Lights Out"
Musician Jakob Nowell, the anime enthusiast behind the band Jakobs Castle, a fan of artists Black Midi and 100 Gecs, reminisces about an ex and wonders why her love went out like a light bulb.
A song on love lost and the feelings and memories that remain, like listening to Black Midi CDs or going to shows and seeing 100 Gecs, it references JoJo no Kimyō na Bōken (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure), Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan), and Death Note's Light Yagami and Misa Misa in a musical style that Jakob's dubbed "beach meets internet," as it combines influences from the Southern California artist scene he's rooted in and the online communities that shape his interests.

What happened to Sublime?
Tumblr media
After the death of Bradley Nowell, the group disbanded. However, in 2009 they had Rome Ramirez become the new lead singer (Breihan, 2023). They changed the name to Sublime with Rome, after lawsuit claims and ownership issues. However, after almost 15 years, Ramirez left the band. They replaced Ramirez with Bradley’s son Jakob. Sublime is performing with Jakob this year at Coachella. In the Rolling Stone article, he said “it seemed like it was time for me to step into that role,” (Hiatt, 2024). He wants to keep Sublime going in his family and he wants to do it for his dad, who was unable to perform his songs onstage. Years after Bradley’s passing, his family turned his house into a recovery facility (The Nowell Family Foundation, n.d.). They provide treatments for other people in the music industry, who are struggling. This facility is also located in California.

Does Sublime Have a Lead Singer?
It's incredible to see family members continue the career of their parents whether it's music, acting, corporate business, and more.
In this story, Sublime's former lead singer's son, Jakob Nowell is taking over the wheel.
As you may recall Bradley Nowell passed at the age of 28 on May 25th, 1996 which was a sad tragedy.
Now 28 year old Jakob is bringing "LIFE" back to Sublime, not only only with his talent, but honoring his dad.

Congrats Jakob and we are very proud of you!

Sublime to Reform with Jakob Nowell Replacing Late Father Bradley Nowell
- “It’s an honor to carry on with our family’s name and legacy with Sublime,” Jakob Nowell says
Jakob Nowell will replace his late father, Bradley Nowell, singing and playing guitar alongside bassist Eric Wilson and drummer Bud Gaugh as Sublime.
“To have Brad’s son playing our music is the closest thing possible to playing with my old buddy Brad,” Wilson said in a statement.
Bradley Nowell died in 1996 and a version of the band has been performing as Sublime with Rome since then. Rome Ramirez announced he would leave the group at the end of 2024; this latest news seems to hasten his exit, though the singer hadn’t commented as Sound Bites went to press.
“This has so many layers for me,” Jakob Nowell said in a statement.
“On a spiritual level, my father passed away when he was 28, and I am 28 now. It’s an honor to carry on with our family’s name and legacy with Sublime. … It’s an absolute privilege to be able to play these Sublime songs with legendary musicians like Eric and Bud. On a personal level, my uncles Bud and Eric are meant to play these songs, and the fans want to hear them. I’m excited, nervous, thankful and humbled all at the same time to step into this role and start this new chapter. It feels like my big crazy family is finally back together, and I couldn’t be more happy.”

but he IS a nepo baby. Look at all the extremely talented kids on The Voice, all of those struggling artists playing bars in Nashville, they won’t ever get the opportunities he will get if he chooses this career path.
This is referring to the discussion about King. I agree that he’ll have opportunities that others don’t because of his family connections, but he seems like a kid who wants to earn people’s respect of his talent. It’s like Jakob Nowell or Wolfgang Van Halen, who both have opportunities to reach larger audiences because of their family legacy, but who are also regarded as good musicians in their own right.

Why does this matter?
I started to question what other bands do after an important member dies. This began when I saw that Coachella had Sublime on their lineup. They said that Nowell’s son, Jakob Nowell, would be singing in place of his father. I was shocked when I first saw this. Then I started to think about similar bands, like Nirvana, who have lost their lead singer. The band went their separate ways and probably won’t get back together. This led me to some questions: What do bands do when someone dies? Do they get back together without them? Do they split up and never get back together? Or like Sublime’s case, have someone close to them continue their career? What will happen to their legacy? Are drugs the leading cause of members dying? I think this matters because lots of people are dying because of fame and drugs. Not to mention, how it affects the media and fans.
