En 1979, en plein mouvement porno chic, Maxine Minx, actrice pornographique en devenir, part en road trip à travers le Texas avec son petit ami et producteur Wayne Gilroy, les acteurs Bobby-Lyne Parker et Jackson Hole, le réalisateur amateur RJ Nichols et sa petite amie Lorraine Day pour tourner un film pornographique intitulé Les Filles du fermier (The Farmer's Daughters).

Le groupe arrive chez Howard et Pearl, un couple de personnes âgées chez qui ils comptent tourner le film. Alors qu'ils commencent à tourner, sans que le couple ne sache de quel genre de film il s'agit, Maxine est invitée dans la maison par Pearl. Elles conversent et Pearl se plaint de son âge et exprime de la jalousie pour la jeunesse de Maxine avant de lui faire une avance sexuelle. Plus tard, elle regarde Maxine et Jackson coucher ensemble et est excitée. Elle demande à son mari de lui faire l'amour, mais il refuse à cause de son insuffisance cardiaque.

La nuit tombe et le groupe se détend dans le gîte. Lorraine, prête à perdre sa réputation de prude, demande à participer au tournage. RJ s'y oppose directement et accuse le groupe de lui avoir demandé, ce à quoi ils répondent qu'il s'agit entièrement de sa décision. RJ filme ensuite la scène de sexe entre Lorraine et Jackson mais, frustré du changement de script et de l'adultère de Lorraine, décide de partir en laissant le groupe pendant que tout le monde dort. Il est arrêté par Pearl qui tente de le séduire. Quand il la repousse, elle le poignarde à mort. Lorraine et Wayne remarquent que RJ est absent et partent à sa recherche. Pendant qu'il cherche dans la grange, Pearl leurre Wayne et le tue d'un coup de fourche dans les yeux. Lorraine est invitée dans la maison par Howard, qui prétend que Pearl a disparu et lui demande d'aller chercher une lampe torche dans la cave. Quand Lorraine tente de remonter, elle découvre qu'elle est enfermée et trouve le corps sans vie d'un esclave sexuel pendu au plafond de la cave.

Howard arrive au gîte et demande à Jackson de l'aider à trouver Pearl. Jackson trouve une voiture – appartenant au cadavre de la cave – dans un étang avant que Howard ne lui tire dans la tête. Pendant ce temps, Pearl entre dans le gîte, va se coucher nue avec Maxine et la caresse. Maxine se réveille et hurle, ce qui fait fuir Pearl sous les yeux de Bobby-Lyne. Lorraine utilise une hache pour essayer de sortir de la cave, mais Howard l'attaque et lui brise les doigts. Bobby-Lyne suit Pearl à l'extérieur et essaie de l'aider à s'éloigner de l'eau du lac. Pearl accuse Bobby-Lyne d'être une prostituée et la pousse dans le lac, où elle se fait dévorer par un alligator.

Maxine voit Pearl et Howard revenir au gîte et se cache sous le lit. Le couple discute des meurtres avant de faire l'amour. Maxine parvient à s'enfuir jusqu'au van, où elle trouve le cadavre de RJ et les pneus crevés. Armée d'un pistolet trouvé dans la boîte à gants, Maxine entre dans la maison et libère Lorraine, qui l'accuse des événements. Malgré l'aide qu'essaie de lui apporter Maxine, Lorraine s'enfuit par la porte d'entrée et se fait tirer dessus par Howard. Alors que Howard et Pearl commencent à déplacer le corps, Lorraine, mourante, se met à bouger, ce qui provoque une attaque cardiaque et la mort de Howard.

Maxine prend les clefs du camion de Howard et Pearl et essaie de tuer Pearl, mais le pistolet n'est pas chargé. Pearl essaie de tuer Maxine mais elle évite la balle tandis que le contrecoup fait bondir Pearl, qui se brise la hanche. Alors que Pearl est allongée dehors, elle demande l'aide de Maxine. Cette dernière refuse et lui roule sur la tête avec le camion. Maxine part de la ferme. Le lendemain matin, la police arrive à la maison et retrouve les corps.

Il est révélé que Maxine est la fille d'un prédicateur fondamentaliste dont les discours sont télévisés tout au long du film. La police trouve la caméra de RJ et spécule sur ce qu'elle peut contenir.

Mini-review:

Wow. That was really good. Despite the glowing reviews, my expectations were not particularly high, for some reason. So, color me surprised. For starters, I loved the first half of the movie. In a lot of cases, that period where horror movies set up the characters and their environment ends up feeling tedious and overlong. But this time, I was thoroughly fascinated, because the writing is very strong and the cast is absolutely pitch perfect. Extra kudos go to Mia Goth, who's mesmerizing throughout (and I was blown away when I realized that).

Once the slasher part begins, the movie quickly starts to fire on all cylinders, equally bringing scares, thrills and laughs. In fact, one jumpscare in particular almost gave me a heart attack, which is not easy. And speaking of laughs, I loved the film's self-referential, meta humor, which is spot on for a movie with so many homages and callbacks. To sum up, X is a slasher that knows how to pay tribute to the classics without forgetting to bring new things to the table. The writing, the acting and the editing more than make it worth a watch.

I found out X was filmed around where I live in New Zealand which is a fun film fact. I won't say where I live exactly because I'm not a fool.

Blood, Sex, and the American Dream: X review

I��m aware that this movie came out on March 18, 2022 which makes me a little late to do this review, but it’s better to be late than never covering this movie. The reason I haven’t covered this movie yet is because I didn’t have a Tumblr account or the “X” DVD yet. So, let’s just cut to the chase and start this review. I’m going to give you my spoiler free thoughts on this movie.

X is a 2022 slasher horror film directed by Ti West who also produced and edited this movie (The House of The Devil and The Sacrament). X is produced by Jared Connon, Scott Mescudi, Dennis Cummings, Jacob Jaffke, Harrison Kreiss, Ashley Levinson, Sam Levinson, Karina Manashil, Peter Phok, and Kevin Turen. The soundtrack is done by Tyler Bates and Chelsea Wolfe. The cast involves Mia Goth as Maxine “Max” Minx/Pearl, Jenna Ortega as Lorraine, Scott Mescudi (Kid Cudi) as Jackson, Martin Henderson as Wayne, Owen Campbell as RJ, Brittany Snow as Bobby-Lynne, Stephen Ure as Howard, James Gaylyn as Sheriff Gentler, Simon Prast as Televangelist, Geoff Dolan as Deputy, Matthew J. Saville as Officer Mitchell, and Bryony Skillington as Store Clerk.

The plot:

A group of actors set out to make an adult film in rural Texas under the noses of their reclusive hosts---an elderly couple with a farm and boarding house for rent. But when the couple catches their young guests in the act, the cast finds themselves in a desperate fight for their lives in this tantalizing slasher from writer-director Ti West.

Positives:

One positive I have about this movie is the cast, each cast member played their parts perfectly…especially Mia Goth and Jenna Ortega. I think that every horror fan must have seen the Jenna Ortega scream scene in the trailer, and it gave me chills when I was watching that scene. That might have been one of the best screams I have ever heard…in my opinion. The characters were extremely likeable, and you feel bad when something awful happens to them…the movie also makes you sympathize with the villains in this movie…especially the character of Pearl.

The second positive I have about this movie was the special effects as it seems like every kill has been done practically which has been missing in modern horror films…okay not all modern horror films. The special effects in this movie are amazing and the makeup and special effects department deserve more credit. The elderly makeup on Mia Goth makes her look unrecognizable.

The third positive I have about X was the atmosphere as I feel like they nailed the 70’s aesthetic with the clothing choice, the cinematography, and the music. It felt like a 70’s-late 80’s slasher which is one of my favorite eras in horror history.

Negatives:

The only negative I have about X is that the motives of Pearl and Howard aren’t clear, we get hints throughout, but it doesn’t pay off. However, don’t let that negative affect your viewing of X as this movie is rewatchable.

My overall thoughts:

After watching this movie, I can say that this is an excellent throwback to late 70’s-early 80’s slashers. This is a fun movie, and it gives you likeable characters to keep you invested. Oh, and I forgot to mention that this movie keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Imagine Zeltrax letting you borrow Deadwood.

You heard nobody had bothered to release Devin after the demonstration. When you went to help him, you were in for a surprise. Instead of your dorky classmate, there was Zeltrax. Duking it out with Elsa. To your amazement, the tree metamorphosed into a monster.

Maybe it ate Devin?

If you turned your head slightly, you would have seen him hiding behind another tree. Unlike you, who were standing out in the open. Rooted to the ground in your admiration of Deadwood.

The voice came from within the countenance, which looked frozen in a wail. His bark twisted beautifully. His eyes looked like dimly lit green lights. Instead of a face, his head was covered by a vertical oval made of the same material.

“How am I supposed to...?”

You made a crude gesture. Zeltrax laughed. Tendrils began to emerge from Deadwood’s hollow. One giant hand made a come-hither motion.

“Can you make me gape like that maw?” you asked in disbelief, taking a step forward.
