Aston Martin Preps for 24 Hours of Daytona

Aston Martin heads into this weekend’s Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona with its partner teams fielding arguably the strongest ever assault on the US endurance classic by the luxury British sportscar brand. The race will feature four competitive Vantage GT3 line-ups – the most ever – spread across both classes of IMSA’s revamped GTD division, and each will include works Aston Martin Racing drivers in crews capable of challenging for victory.

Seattle-based partner team and reigning IMSA Sprint Cup GT champion, the Heart of Racing, returns in 2022 having increased its IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship entry to two cars. One of the team’s four-liter V8 turbo-charged machines carries Aston Martin’s hopes in the new top GTD Pro class for homologated GT3-specification cars, which replaces the outgoing GTLM category for specialized GTE-spec machinery. While the other will run in the regular GTD class alongside new Aston Martin Racing partner Magnus Racing which has bought a Vantage GT3 for this season. Both teams will be joined in the Rolex 24 by FIA World Endurance Championship regulars, NorthWest AMR, as team owner and driver Paul Dalla Lana (CDN) returns to Daytona with perhaps his best chance yet of tasting glory in the event.

The Heart of Racing has retained Sprint Cup champion and AMR works driver Ross Gunn (GBR) to spearhead its GTD Pro attack alongside Alex Riberas (ESP) in 2022. They will be joined for the Rolex 24 by 2020 24 Hours of Le Mans GTE Pro winner Maxime Martin (BEL), who makes his Aston Martin Daytona debut this weekend. Three-times Le Mans class-winner Darren Turner (GBR) returns to the Heart of Racing in the GTD class car as he aims to add a Daytona podium to his glittering list of honors, alongside the team’s principal Ian James (GBR) and newly crowned AMR Academy winner and team regular Roman De Angelis (CDN). Tom Gamble, no stranger to the Vantage GT3, completes the driver quartet.

NorthWest AMR returns after a season’s sabbatical from Daytona as Dalla Lana brings his new WEC line-up comprising 2019-20 FIA GT world champion Nicki Thiim (DEN) and new AMR works driver (see below) David Pittard (GBR) for a fresh assault on the Rolex 24 in the GTD class. Another works driver and a GTD-class star of the ’21 race, Charlie Eastwood (IRL), completes a strong driver line-up.

Finally, the Magnus Racing GTD entry will be manned by US trio and team regulars John Potter, Andy Lally and Spencer Pumpelly, as well as two-time Le Mans class-winner Jonny Adam (GBR), who returns for his first Daytona start since 2014.

Aston Martin Vantage GT4s will also feature heavily in the 4-Hour Michelin Pilot Challenge opener at the same venue on Friday at 1335 ET (-5 Hours GMT). The British luxury sportscar brand goes into the MPC season with four teams entered. Long-time AMR partner Automatic Racing returns for another season with the #09 driven by Ramin Abdolvahabi (USA), Rob Ecklin (USA) and Brandon Kidd (USA). The team will run a second #27 car for Paul Kiebler (USA) and Jon Branam (USA). Meanwhile, Alan Brynjolfsson (USA) and Trent Hindman (USA) will embark on a second season with the #7 VOLT Racing with Archangel Vantage GT4. A new team to the AMR family for 2022 is NTE Sport, which will run a Vantage GT4 for American drivers Manny Franco and Romeo Kapudija.

John Gaw, Aston Martin Racing Managing Director, said: “This is Aston Martin’s strongest representation ever for the Rolex 24, and coming off the back of a season with multiple class wins in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, it is a clear signal of intent ahead of an exciting season for Aston Martin Racing and the Vantage, in all its variants.”

The 60th Rolex 24 at Daytona will begin at 1340 ET (-5 Hours GMT), on Saturday, 29 January 2022.

‘Milli Violini’ y la orquesta del fraude: la insólita historia de la violinista que recorrió el mundo sin tocar ni una sola nota

La escritora Jessica Chiccehitto Hindman revela en su libro de memorias, Sounds Like Titanic, sus cuatro años en un conjunto musical de prestigio internacional que ofreció cientos de conciertos haciendo playback.

Durante su infancia en una pequeña localidad de la cordillera de los Apalaches, al este de los Estados Unidos, Jessica Chiccehitto Hindman fantaseaba con el día en el que pudiera mudarse a la Gran Manzana y cumplir su sueño de ser violinista. Durante años sus padres condujeron cuatro horas entre las montañas para que ella pudiera dar clases y el gimnasio de su pequeño instituto se convirtió en su sala de conciertos particular. Lo consiguió: en 2002 se mudó a Nueva York y se matriculó en una escuela de renombre. Siguiendo las pautas dramáticas exigidas por el arquetipo del sueño americano made in Hollywood, a continuación Jessica debería destacar por encima del resto y convertirse en una estrella internacional que vendiera millones de discos, saliera en televisión y actuara por todo el país. No ocurrió. A los pocos meses, abandonó las clases después de darse cuenta de que allí había una docena de violinistas con mucho más talento del que ella jamás tendría. Pero lo insólito de esta historia es que la joven sí consiguió vender millones de discos, actuar en televisión y ofrecer recitales por todo el país. Eso sí, sin tocar una sola nota.

En las memorias Sounds Like Titanic (Suena como Titanic, todavía no editada en castellano), Jessica Chiccehitto Hindman narra los cuatro años de trabajo en una prestigiosa orquesta cuyos recitales no eran más que discos reproduciéndose de fondo mientras sus miembros fingían tocar los instrumentos. El público nunca supo que los micrófonos estaban desenchufados y que aquello que escuchaban era un playback. Desde su publicación el pasado año, la biografía consiguió la simpatía de la crítica, que la consideró como uno de los mejores libros de 2019 por medios como The New Yorker o el Círculo Nacional de Críticos Literarios de Estados Unidos. El título procede de la expresión de incredulidad de uno de sus compañeros tras terminar un concierto, referenciando el parecido de lo tocado –o simulado– con la banda sonora de James Horner para la oscarizado película. Ella, prefería denominarse como ‘Milli Violini’, homenajeando a quienes protagonizaran uno de los timos más flagrantes de la historia de la música pop, los Milli Vanilli.

“Nadie se sorprendió más que yo cuando fui contratada para girar por el mundo como violinista”, declaró Chiccehitto en un ensayo publicado en 2018 en Lenny Letter –la extinta newsletter feminista de Lena Dunham– y que supuso la primera confesión mediática del escándalo. Reconoce, además, que su aspecto físico fue un punto a su favor en el proceso de selección. La autora alude al hombre que la contrató y que dirigía la orquesta como El Compositor, convencida de que la omisión del nombre real refuerza su decisión de considerar el título como una obra literaria y no como un trabajo de periodismo de investigación. Con dificultades para poder continuar pagándose los estudios en la Universidad de Columbia y atraída por la estabilidad laboral y el salario ofrecidos (150 dólares al día más bonificaciones), la joven aceptó formar parte de la estafa y ejercer como mimo del violín desde 2002 hasta 2006 con gran éxito. Actuaban en auditorios, centros comerciales, recitales para televisión… El ritmo era frenético: en 2004 dieron conciertos en 54 ciudades en solo tres meses. Todos con música pregrabada por otros concertistas.

El Compositor, que rezumaba carisma y prestigio pero sin apenas conocimientos académicos de música clásica, era el cerebro de la estafa y su cara visible. Había vendido millones de discos, sus conciertos televisados eran presentados por estrellas del cine e incluso había viajado como embajador artístico del ejecutivo estadounidense en países del tercer mundo. Detrás de sus actos no se hallaba ni la ambición económica desmedida ni la perturbación delictiva, sino la batalla entre el ego personal y el mantenimiento de un estatus pretérito de genio. “Era una estafa gentil. A él le motivaba el deseo de ser famoso y elogiado, de ser visto como una muy buena persona”, añade la exviolinista.

Una de las claves más insólitas de esta historia es que los músicos que formaban parte del conjunto eran en su mayor parte auténticos virtuosos de sus respectivos instrumentos. Músicos titulados en las escuelas más prestigiosas que no habían tenido suerte en el mercado laboral y necesitaban el dinero. También Jessica, fuertemente endeudada debido a los créditos estudiantiles que cada año ahogan a millones de universitarios en el país. “Yo era la persona menos cualificada del conjunto. Eso era lo que hacía todo tan estúpido. [El compositor] tenía unos músicos de gran talento y nos lo utilizaba. ¡Algunos violinistas sonaban genial! Pero no nadie pudo escucharlos”, sostiene la escritora en The Guardian.

like Titanic es considerado como un afilado retrato de un país traumado tras el 11-S y un grito de socorro en la vigente cultura del fake, con varias generaciones más obsesionadas en aparentar que en hacer. A la instrumentista, formar parte de la orquesta le daba la oportunidad de ser respetada y aplaudida allá dónde fuera, un sentimiento rara vez familiar para las veinteañeras. “Cuando tocas el violín eres capaz, por un momento, de abandonar el cuerpo de mujer en el que resides. El cuerpo que simboliza sexo, tanto si lo quieres como si no, que nunca es suficientemente atractivo… Es como si cuando apoyas un violín en tu cuerpo te convirtieras en un tío”.

Convivir con el fraude le pasó factura. Consumía cocaína y anfetaminas para poder trabajar durante más tiempo –hasta ocho horas ininterrumpidas durante algunas jornadas–y comenzó a sufrir ataques de pánico constantes, que se traducían en un deseo enfermizo de orinar. No podía subir a aviones o montarse en coches y metros, rehuyendo cualquier lugar que no ofreciera acceso inmediato a un baño desocupado. Durante los recitales los episodios empeoraban y llegó a abandonar el escenario en varias ocasiones.

El síndrome del impostor, esta vez bien fundamentado, se apoderó de ella. “Se rompió el espejismo y vi quién era de verdad: una mentira y un fraude. Alguien que trabajaba en una orquesta que engañaba a la gente haciéndoles pensar que estaban escuchando un concierto en directo. Alguien a quien le pagan más por ser un cuerpo femenino silente que lo que jamás hubiera podido aspirar con su cerebro universitario”. En 2006 Jessica abandonó el conjunto, volvió a casa de sus padres y se matriculó en un grado de escritura. Hoy es profesora de escritura creativa en una universidad de Kentucky y presume de ayudar a sus alumnos a convivir y manejar el pánico y la ansiedad. Solo toca el violín si la contratan en alguna boda.

"Leading sources of phony news reports are still pumping massive amounts of misleading content onto the Internet despite nearly two years of promises by technology companies to address the problem, according to a report released Thursday morning.

"With the congressional midterm elections just weeks away, the report prepared for the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, which supports research on journalism, the arts and other subjects, found that more than 80 percent of the Twitter accounts that it says frequently shared links to phony news reports during the 2016 election remain active. As a group, they publish more than a million tweets in a typical day.

"Researchers also found that 65 percent of links to phony and conspiratorial news reports went to just 10 prolific websites — a finding that challenges claims that the creation of such content is too widespread and diffuse for technology companies to effectively combat.

“"The fake news that matters is not organic, small-scale or spontaneous,' said the conclusion of the 60-page report. 'Most fake news on Twitter links to a few established conspiracy and propaganda sites, and coordinated campaigns play a crucial role in spreading fake news.'
