Throughout the London-based producer, composer, musician and Sekito Records head Alfa Mist’s career, he has steadfastly refused to be boxed into a specific genre or style: his work has spanned everything from hip-hop beatmaking to producing for rappers like Loyle Carner, composing neo-classical works for the London Contemporary Orchestra and reworking tracks for Ólafur Arnalds and legendary jazz…

Almost forgot to even pick and album, and that’s saying something considering the name of this blog.

“Resynthesis” by Jamie Leeming
As I was reading about this album in the artist’s bio, I was impressed to hear it was his first solo album considering the quality of the performance. It is excellent playing, and I only wish that Leeming pushed his sound a little further to explore the far reaches of the emotion that could be present in the music. “Zen Garden” is the track that led me to the album, and in my opinion Zen Garden, despite being one of the longer tracks is very fluid and coherent; at no point did I ever lose any attention to both the composition and performance. I’ve been listening to a lot of guitar from a lot of different styles and this modern minimalistic style of jazz suits the instrument well.
One of my favorite things about Leeming’s music here is how the performance of the music and the composition are always facilitating each other. The improvisatory sections are good examples of this, the content of the composition places the solos perfectly in proportion for their musical content to help structure form.
Genre: Jazz
Rating: 7/10
Favorite track(s): “Zen Garden” and “Still Connected”

https://tenhou.net/sc/?rtt-1
Tumblr media

Mormon missionaries caught on video running away from a very gay doormat. A lesbian couple was left "crying with laughter" after seeing two missionaries react to their very gay welcome mat. via /r/atheism
Mormon missionaries caught on video running away from a very gay doormat. A lesbian couple was left "crying with laughter" after seeing two missionaries react to their very gay welcome mat.
https://www.lgbtqnation.com/2022/09/mormon-missionaries-caught-video-running-away-gayest-place-town-doormat/
According to their doormat, the Indiana home of Jamie Foust and her wife Melissa’s house is the “Gayest Place in Town.”
Apparently, it was too gay for a pair of proselytizing Mormon missionaries who were caught on the couple’s doorbell camera, leaving after they saw the message underfoot.
The moment left the lesbians “crying with laughter.”
Foust, 28, and her wife, 32, bought the coir and rainbow-trimmed doormat from Target during Pride month as a gag. It was on sale for 10 bucks.
Two months later, Foust was checking out her doorbell cam footage, which had doormat in view, when the Mormons walked into the picture.
Footage revealed the pair of well-scrubbed, college-age Elders — dressed in regulation short-sleeved dress shirts, ties and slacks — setting foot on the couple’s porch and taking in the welcome mat’s unmistakable message.
The Mormons had arrived at the “Gayest Place in Town.”
“Gayest?” one asked out loud. “Nope”, replied the second, and they moseyed away.
Whether the “nope” indicated the address wasn’t ripe for preaching, or whether the missionaries believed the home was not, in fact, the Gayest Place in Town, was unclear.

Alfa Mist’s Bring Backs Live Tour Opens in Glasgow
Past the high street through to the Victorian-era industrial buildings of the east end of Glasgow, the crowd at St Luke’s was buzzing in anticipation of Alfa Mist’s jazz and hip-hop blended performance Tuesday night. Kicking off the UK & Ireland live tour of his latest album, Bring Backs, the band of instrumentalists sent their improvisationally syncopated sounds through the former church’s crafted acoustics to the chic urban crowd. Amidst the backdrop of two massive 19th century stained-glass windows on either side of an equally grand pipe organ, accompanying Alfa Mist on stage were Jamie Leeming on the guitar, Kaya Thomas-Dyke on the bass and vocals, Jas Kayser on the drums, and Johnny Woodham on the trumpet.
Known for his self-taught mastery of the keys, the keyboardist-producer-MC showed us that beyond being a multihyphenate, he is a multi-instrumentalist having punctuated the performance by picking up some strings and continuing on with the jam session that the improvisational genre spurred out of everyone on stage. From jazz to hip hop, spittin’ out beats and boppin’ behind the keys, the bandleader’s naturally laidback demeanour played out on stage as a laissez-faire and supportive collaborative energy amplifying the voices of the peoples up there with him.
As a woman who appreciates the drums, I was stoked to see Jas Kayser completely in the zone, her sound coming through so strongly independent yet harmonious. Starting the show, Jamie Leeming let the crowd know that this was the first time their music would be performed to a live audience. Riffing and jamming—his chords, her beats, and the bassline, they were up there creating the dynamic energy that warmed up the crowd and started off the night of indescribably genre-bending music. With Kaya Thomas-Dyke’s mellow vocalisations on “People” adding to the soft nature of the tune, a recorded poetry reading by Hilary Thomas superimposed on their crowd-pleasing performance of “Bumper Cars”, and Alfa Mist’s distinctly London gritted rap vocals, the performance was one I would excitedly describe as progressive jazz, its enlivened jazz roots brought to life by the brassy stylings of Glasgow’s own, Johnny Woodham.
As much as the music was the centrepiece of the show, I would be remiss if I neglected the fabulous job done by the lighting and stage crews. It wasn’t an over-the-top spectacle by any means but their use of spotlighting, colour combinations, and, if I remember correctly, mist effects absolutely added to the mood of the show in such a beautiful and perfectly-sized space. Whether the decorated balcony window was a nod to Alfa Mist and Emmavie’s Epoch album art or if it is original building art, I’ll likely never know but the choice to accentuate this impressive feature was such a creative and interactive design choice that speaks to Alfa Mist’s collaborative exploration of performativity, musicality, and artistic expression that, especially in this performance, was an intoxicating delight on the senses.
Luckily for everyone in the SoCal area, as part of the North American leg of the Bring Backs Tour, Alfa Mist is set to perform at the Lodge Room in Highland Park on May 18, 2022.
