Raoul understudies in Scandinavian replica productions

Glenn Edell: Understudied the role of Raoul in Stockholm 2016-2017, and went on several times.

John Martin Bengtsson: A rare double take, as he understudied the role of Raoul in both Stockholm (2016-2017) and Copenhagen (2018-2019). However, I don’t think he ever went on in either productions. Partly because he covered (and performed) the role of the Phantom in both productions. In between he was also principal Raoul in the non-replica production in Gothenburg.

Sebastian Harris: He was principal Raoul in Copenhagen 2018-2019, but also principal André. I’m in doubt on whether he ever went on as Raoul. But as long as John Martin Bengtsson did not, that must mean principal Christian Lund had a helluva stamina.

Mikkel Thorning: He understudied the role of Raoul in Copenhagen from 2000-2003, and is thus one of the original Danish understudies. He went on several times.

Emil Ritter: Understudy in the 2009 revival in Copenhagen. He performed at least a handful of performances towards the end of the season, when the principal was out sick for a week or so. 

Björn Olsson: Known as a Raoul legend in later years. He was principal Raoul in Basel, Hamburg and Copenhagen, but he actually started his Phantom career as u/s Raoul in Stockholm 1994-1995.

Mathias Hedegaard: He was, along with Mikkel Thorning, the original Raoul understudy in Copenhagen. But unlike Thorning, he only stayed for a year or so. He did however join the theatre’s annual concert tour for their sponsors, where he did the Raoul numbers in costume (and where the photo is from).

Bengt Nordfors: Understudy, you ask? Wasn’t he the original Raoul principal in Stockholm? Yes indeed. BUT: he returned as a cover for the role in 1994. Thus, also an understudy. 

Jan Kyhle: He was the original understudy in Stockholm, 1989-1991. In 1992 he became principal Raoul, which he remained until the production closed in 1995.

Ceci semble n'avoir rien à voir avec cela, mais lorsqu'on creuse un dossier (ici, les amalgames dentaires et la lutte contre les caries), on trouve toujours le même genre de perles. — Entre pirates, corsaires et autres gaillards de la flibuste (écrit en janvier 2013).

Trois décennies après sa création, l'Académie internationale de médecine orale et de toxicologie compte près de sept cents membres actifs en Amérique du Nord, suivie par les chapitres affiliés de quatorze autres pays. Parmi ceux-ci, le professeur suédois Ulf Bengtsson, premier ingénieur de recherche à l'université de Linköping, correspondent européen, a été actif dans le projet d'élimination progressive du mercure au sein de l'UE. En octobre 2011, il rédige un rapport (1) sur les conflits d'intérêts qu'il a pu mettre en lumière entre les parties prenantes « pro-amalgames », présentes au sein des débats, face aux délégués des ministères nationaux pour l'environnement, lors des sessions du comité de négociation intergouvernemental (CNI) sur le mercure mis en place par le PNUE. Pour les esprits curieux, il déclare en début de rapport que celui-ci n'a pas de lien avec son travail au sein de l'université – tout comme le Dr Mutter, dans sa réponse au rapport du SCENIHR (2), déclare n'avoir aucun conflit d'intérêts. Pour sa recherche, qui consiste à trouver les liens entre les organisations professionnelles dentaires et les industriels dentaires, le Pr Bengtsson n'aura eu besoin d'aucune investigation en profondeur. Une simple recherche à partir de sources ouvertes au public, via Internet, aura suffit. Il part, dans un premier temps, des organisations dentaires pour se diriger vers les acteurs de l'industrie, puis, dans un second temps, en sens inverse, part des industriels pour revenir aux organisations ; deux angles d'approche dont le second sert de vérification du premier.

Les deux grandes organisations non-gouvernementales intervenant au sein du monde dentaire international sont, d'une part, la Fédération dentaire internationale (3) (FDI) qui est de loin la première en nombre avec plus d'un million de dentistes à travers le monde ; et, d'autre part, l'Association internationale pour la recherche dentaire (4) (AIRD) qui dénombre douze mille membres. Il s'agit de deux organisations non-gouvernementales (ONG) en relations officielles avec l'OMS et à ce titre, selon les principes mêmes édictés par l'Organisation mondiale de la santé, elles doivent être exemptes de préoccupations qui soient de nature commerciale ou de but lucratif. Or, le document du Pr Bengtsson met en lumière qu'un certains nombre de partenaires et de membres de ces deux organisations sont en fait des firmes multinationales ou des employés de ces firmes. Vu que l'OMS est active à travers le monde et donc au sein des pays en voie de développement, elle promeut la santé bucco-dentaire au sein même de marchés tout autant en voie de développement potentiel pour les industriels de la santé. De fait, il est vital pour l'industrie dentaire d'être au courant le plus tôt possible des projets de l'OMS afin de pouvoir sauter sur toutes les occasions de prise de parts de marché. C'est ainsi que l'on peut retrouver le chef du Programme de santé bucco-dentaire de l'OMS comme représentant de cette même OMS au sein de la FDI (5)  (6). C'est ainsi que l'on peut retrouver le directeur exécutif de l'International Dental Manufacturers au poste de consultant, toujours au sein de la FDI.

Le document du Pr Bengtsson montre aussi – citant plus d'une douzaine de sponsors parmi lesquels on trouve des fabricants, des distributeurs, des organismes industriels, tous actifs dans l'exploitation des amalgames dentaires – que la FDI se propose d'être le porte-parole de tous ces bienfaiteurs, de les aider à élaborer leurs « politiques », de prendre part et de publier des « compléments d’études à comité de lecture ». C'est à cette fin qu'en 2009, au cours du congrès dentaire mondial de Singapour, elle a créé le groupe de travail sur l'amalgame dentaire (7) (DATT) dont l'objectif apparaît comme une volonté farouche de contrer l'interdiction de l'emploi des amalgames. Ce groupe a été remarqué lors des deux premières sessions du comité de négociations intergouvernementales (CNI1 et CNI2) du programme des Nations Unies pour l'environnement (PNUE). Et en 2010, un certain nombre de directeurs des leaders mondiaux de l'industrie dentaire se sont réunis autour du président de la FDI et de son directeur exécutif pour débattre entre-eux des négociations en cours, lors des ces mêmes sessions. La FDI n'y va pas par quatre chemins en présentant le but des sessions du CNI – élaboration d'un instrument juridique contraignant sur l'emploi du mercure au sein des Nations Unies – comme une interdiction d'exercer une activité commerciale (« Seeks a ban on commercial activity »), ni plus ni moins. Il est à relever aussi que la FDI, éprouvant des difficultés économiques, est largement dépendante de ses partenaires commerciaux que son trésorier ne manque pas de remercier avec ferveur dans son rapport annuel 2008-2009 : « Nous sommes très reconnaissants à tous nos partenaires commerciaux pour le soutien continu qu’ils nous apportent à leur façon. On est donc en droit de se demander qui parle lors des sessions du CNI du PNUE : Est-ce l'industrie dentaire ou la FDI ? Car au final, on s'aperçoit que la FDI et ses partenaires commerciaux forment un bloc, unis dans un combat pro-amalgames, qui plus est, parlant au nom de toute la profession dentaire.

Au moment de rédiger ces lignes, moment aussi de la cinquième session du CNI à Genève, les deux rubriques « Working with Corporates » (travail avec les entreprises) et « Working with NGO's » (travail avec les ONG) du site Web de la FDI, affichent toutes deux « Soon available » (Bientôt disponible). De ce côté, il m'est impossible de confronter le document du Pr Bengtsson avec la réalité. Par contre le site réservé au programme de l'Initiative mondiale contre les caries, Global Caries Initiative (9) (GCI), lancé en 2009 par la FDI en collaboration avec l'Association internationale pour la recherche dentaire (10) (AIRD) et la Fédération internationale des enseignants en dentisterie et associés (11) (IFDEA), est plus explicite sur le partenariat de la fédération avec l'industrie. Au bas de sa page, nous y retrouvons les sponsors fondateurs cités par le Pr Bengtsson : P&G, Unilever, Colgate, GlaxoSmithKline, Wrigley, actifs dans la fabrication internationale de produits de santé bucco-dentaire. Ce projet a pour but, non pas la suppression des amalgames dans le traitement des maladies carieuses, mais la réduction de leur emploi en stimulant une réduction des caries à travers le monde par le biais d'une information de prévention. L'ambition de cette initiative est d'éradiquer les caries d'ici 2020. Le Pr. Bengtsson déclare que cela relève de la naïveté et « davantage de la politique et des relations publiques que de la réalité. » On sait en effet que les Etats-Unis dépensent des millions – voire des milliards – de dollars pour la prévention, cela sans résultat. Par ailleurs, si ce but était atteint, certains partenaires engagés dans le sponsoring de la FDI y perdraient des plumes. En effet, parmi eux, on retrouve des leaders du marché des sucreries, tenues – comme d'aucun le sait des glucides en général – pour principales responsables des caries. Cela ne s'invente pas ! Pour le vérifier, le Pr Bengtsson relève – en octobre 2011 – que Mars Inc, W.M. Wrigley Jr. Company et The Sugar Bureau sont membres de l'Organisme européen de recherche contre les caries (ORCA), et que jusqu'en 2010, Coca-Cola (®) était aussi membre de l'ORCA. Et l'ORCA est l'un des participants à la campagne GCI, mise en œuvre par la FDI (12). Sur son site Internet, sous un paragraphe intitulé « Évaluation et communication des résultats de la recherche et prévention de leurs abus » (« Evaluation and communication of research findings and prevention of their abuse »), on peut lire : « La participation à l'Initiative mondiale contre les caries de la FDI continue. » (« Participation in the FDI World Dental Federation’s Global Caries Initiative (GCI) continues ») (13). Par ailleurs, si Mars Inc. n'est plus cité parmi les partenaires de l'ORCA, le Pf. Bengtsson nous apprend que cette compagnies est propriétaire de Wrigley, qui en est son distributeur (14)  (15), que le président de la FDI, ainsi que le président de sa section « santé publique » ont tous deux contribué à former les professionnels du confiseur à l'art du plaidoyer (16), que le nouveau bâtiment de l'Association internationale pour la recherche dentaire (AIRD), qui a déménagé en 1995 à Alexandria, en Virginie (États-Unis), a été financé en partie par des membres de l'industrie dentaire, mais que M&M'S (®) Mars faisait aussi partie des mécènes, et qu'enfin Coca-Cola (®) a fait un don de un million de dollars à l'American Academy of Pediatric Dentistery (17). Comble du comble, par clin d’œil synchronistique, à l'instant même où je termine ces lignes, je reçois un courriel pour fêter la saint Valentin, signé M&M'S (®) !
